Is now the time to buy Spurs players in FPL? What the Premium Members Area says

 1

With Harry Kane (£12.3m) announcing ahead of Gameweek 3 that he will be remaining at Tottenham Hotspur this summer, is now the time to buy the Lilywhites’ players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL)?

It’s been a busy summer in north London. After 72 days of hunting for a new manager, Nuno Espirito Santo’s arrival set in motion the beginnings of a painful rebuild at the club. With key personnel leaving the squad and the situation with Kane uncertain, I had some concerns about both Spurs and their FPL assets ahead of the new season.

But the Lilywhites have partly assuaged those fears, starting the season with two wins and two clean sheets. With Kane back on board and Spurs ranking high on the Season Ticker, maybe now is the time to invest.

For this article, I’ll be turning to the data and graphics available in the Premium Members Area.

FPL points predictions for Gameweek 3 and beyond 3

The case for the defence

Spurs’ fans were meant to be assured of defensive security in the Jose Mourinho days but that promise was never really fulfilled. The Lilywhites kept just 12 clean sheets during the 2020/21 season and in that time conceded 45 goals.

Spurs defenders quickly fell off the radar in favour of the in-form attacking players but the start of the 2021/22 season has seen a new defensive security, with two clean sheets in the opening two fixtures.

Oliver Skipp‘s (£4.5m) return from loan has had a huge impact on the Spurs unit. Playing alongside Pierre-Emile Hojberg (£5.0m) and a grafting Dele Alli (£6.5m), the 20-year-old midfielder has added a layer of security in front of the backline. So far, Skipp has registered 10 recoveries, two blocks, two clearances and is joint-second across the Spurs team for tackles:

In reality, FPL managers would only look to invest in Skipp as a budget enabler, especially as he is yet to pose any kind of attacking threat. Rather, he instead makes his defensive teammates more attractive options.

Eric Dier (£4.5), Japhat Tanganga (£4.5m) and Sergio Reguilon (£5.0m) could all offer some good potential options over the next two Gameweeks especially.

Above: Heatmaps for Dier, Tanganga and Reguilon in Gameweeks 1/2

Whilst Spurs have conceded the most shots of any Premier League team over the first two Gameweeks (43), only ten of these have been on target. Furthermore, with that many attempts allowed you would expect Spurs to be top of expected goals conceded (xGC) table – however, they sit seventh across the division.

When you look at the type of shots being faced, many of them are low risk, meaning that Spurs are doing a good job of making their opponents take less quality chances and attempt more low-percentage efforts from distance that a solid goalkeeper like Hugo Lloris (£5.5) is likely to save.

Above: Spurs’ shots conceded map (bigger circles = better quality chances)

Lloris, indeed, is currently top for saves across the division with 10.

With Dier available in the game for just £4.5m and with new signing Cristian Romero (£5.0m) still to come in and strengthen the defence, the former could be a good option for the next two matches against Watford in Gameweek 3 and Crystal Palace in Gameweek 4. When you couple the potential for clean sheets in these matches with his aerial threat from set pieces (something seen a lot in pre-season), it could also result in the potential upside with attacking returns.

Attack! Attack! Attack!

Spurs finished fifth across the Premier League for goals scored last season with 62 and were second for big chances scored with 44. They also had the best goal conversation rate in the league with 15.3%.

With confirmation that Kane will be staying at Spurs in 2021/22 and will be “100% focused on helping the team achieve success”, FPL interest in the Spurs attacking options will likely increase over the next few weeks.

I will be staying at Tottenham this summer and will be 100% focused on helping the team achieve success. #COYS

Harry Kane

As a Son Heung-min (£10.0m) owner, I was delighted to hear that Kane is staying put given their fruitful relationship in the 2020/21 season. The England striker was top for both goals and assists across the Spurs team last season, with Son second in both categories.

Together, Kane and Son hold the record for the most prolific partnership in the Premier League, with 14 combinations in the 2020/21 season and 34 across their all-time matches together.

Investing in the pair will cost FPL managers substantially more this season than last and therefore owning both will be difficult. With Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) competing with Kane to be the premium forward asset of choice, many managers, myself included, may look to Son as a means of saving budget.

According to our Rate My Team tool, Son is right up there with Kane for projected scores over the next six Gameweeks – and thus offers better value:

With the Korean having started the season up top and many in the Spurs fan community expecting to see him play far closer to Kane in 2021/22 (Nuno having deployed narrow wingers to date), he could still be an effective ‘out of position’ forward that we were hoping for. The next few Gameweeks will give us a good view on Spurs and how they set up with Kane back; if you’re not investing in the short term, then the Spurs fixture change in Gameweek 13 looks a good time to jump on.

Above: Our Season Ticker ranks Spurs first for Gameweeks 13-17

For managers looking for a route into the Spurs attack ahead of Gameweek 3 and 4, budget enabler Dele Alli (£6.5m) could potentially be a solid pick. Alli’s record against Gameweek 3 opponents Watford is great. He has never failed to return in a home fixture against the Hornets in the Premier League, registering four goals, one assist, two bonus points, two clean sheets and 27 FPL points in four fixtures.

While he’s admittedly been tasked with more defensive responsibilities under Nuno, Spurs haven’t had much possession in the opening two Gameweeks, with a ball-hogging Manchester City side in town on the opening weekend and a very attack-minded Wolves attempting to claw back an early deficit last weekend. In a home match against Xisco Munoz’s side, Alli will surely get to drift more into ‘the hole’ in his hybrid no. 8/10 role, as we saw in pre-season.

Alli seems to have refound the form that FPL managers and Spurs fans saw when he first arrived at the club. He is a player I am seriously considering ahead of the Gameweek 3 deadline, in a team in upbeat mood following their opening two fixtures and lifted by Kane’s news. Alli feeds on positivity and confidence, and he has that in buckets right now.

He finished the season well and looks to be in great form now.

I agree with the 4 players that Miguel has mentioned above. I’d probably go Greenwood then Jota as the best two picks.

Do price drops ever affect your decision to get rid of a player?
I'm regretting not making an early move from Barnes to Benrahma. But now that Barnes' price has dropped and Benrahma's has risen I feel somewhat reluctant to make the move as I feel I've missed the boat and I may as well play Barnes against Norwich. I feel like I should still make the move but I feel that stubborness as I see I've essentially 'lost' that 0.3 doing so

You might have missed the boat on a 0.2 mil tv gain or whatever, but I don’t think you’ve missed the boat on points.

It seems a very daft reason not to do a transfer.

I try not to, whilst many do. I have a roadmap that I try to stick to. I have a plan to sell Buendia, but not yet, so I have to absorb his drop. Legions are ditching Toney, and whilst I don't really want him, my plan is to sell him GW6 by which time his price will likely have crashed.

I think theres a bit of that whole, I'll make the move, Leicester come out a different team and Barnes smashes Norwich and Benrahma blanks, in there too. Almost like my head says make the move, my heart says no stick with Barnes. Even typing that out though I'm just like, why am I debating this, just make the damn move!

I'm holding Barnes & White despite their price drops - if Barnes returns this weekend against Norwich he could easily see a bounce back to 7.0 - if he blanks he'll be out of my team by Saturday night

Sam's analysis doesn't factor in the high possibility that Spurs go ahead with a front 3 of Kane flanked by Son and Traore. Traore would be a far better cheaper alternative than Alli, so long as he's instructed to bulldoze his way through defences to create space for Kane and Son rather than balloon the ball into Row Z.

I read her analysis of the defence quite differently. She interprets the stats as saying they conceded low quality chances, giving Lloris easy saves. But the eye test informed me Wolves were ridiculously profligate - they won't hold out against better quality attacks.

What are people's thoughts on Ziyech? Had possibly the best pre-season of all players until the shoulder injury but came on late in the last match and looked a threat so obviously back in contention... Lukaku's return may even bolster that with assist potential (and defence's focus on him if not).

I'm currently on a Wildcard week in order to get Lukaku in after a quiet first week and better 2nd, didn't need to rush it but felt better to get the benefit now! Ziyech is in my rough draft mid, more of a solid all-round team than full of big hitters, often bites me in the bench but always nice to have back-up for rotations...

    (Current team)

    Lloris

    Duffy, Cresswell, Mings

    Soucek, Grealish, Son (C), Ziyech

    Lukaku, Antonio, Ings

Subs. Sánchez, Jota, Livramento, James (Jota and James just out for the Liv/Chelsea fixture but usually 1st team!)

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years
      2 years, 7 months ago

Tuchel likes to rotate a lot, so he'll get games, but I'd have thought Havertz and Mount will get the lions' share of games leaving Ziyech a peripheral figure.

      1. Jimrod™
        • 14 Years

Yeah, the rotation is a worry - he'd probably cemented a spot until the injury but now it's another factor! I thought he still looked a step ahead when he came on so maybe still has form to push for a place. Could be a nice differential or a waste of funds which could upgrade another!

Seems a little too balanced? I was considering dropping Salah to bring in Lukaku for Toney but would still have Fernandes as a second captain option - with Kane staying, it takes some of the shine off Son as captain

      1. Jimrod™
        • 14 Years
        2 years, 7 months ago

Yeah, Toney was first out in the Wildcard for me, was a risk but could have come in all guns blazing, fizzled out. 😀 I had Mane and Mahrez, so both sacrificed a bit for Lukaku, Chelsea off to a strong start. I have a feeling Son will benefit a little from Kane if anything, they seem to basically score or assist each other when they're on and not quite as strong without!

I tempted to downgrade Lloris and Ings (as he's not on pens) to upgrade Grealish but I'm suffering from a few .1's missing in funds still!

Very true! I don't mind a few potential rotations with a balanced team (Jota similar) but of course that often results in a lot of 5 minute cameos! Luckily just about worked out with Mahrez for me last week!

Do you ever keep players because you're a little bit stubborn and at the same time think they will come good soon?

Bachmann, Wan Bissaka, Mahrez, Wilson, Toney - so 5/11 of my team which would probably be sold by many of you by now. First 4 looked like decent differentials, but chosing them hasn't paid off yet.

Well I have three of those 5 so I guess so. Bachmann has some good fixtures ahead (plus I will never be in a position where I want to use my transfer on a 4.5 GK), Wilson is a good player but unfortunately in a really bad team, I think he can get some points but it's frustrating having him when a number of players at a similar price point look threatening and I still think Toney can get enough goals to justify a 6.5m price tag. Stay stubborn 🙂

I keep them if I think they’re going to come good.

I’m keeping Toney because I think he’s going to get going in the next few games and will be good value at that price point.

Of the ones you have, only Mahrez looks a bit suspect due to Pep rotation.

But, yes, people don’t have a lot of patience and are quick to ship a player after 2 blanks in a row.

Wilson goals will come and with Southampton next that could be good opportunity for him. Don't forget it's only been 2 matches. The question marks will always be around Mahrez playing time and Toney just needs to adapt - worth keeping at his price. It's a long season.

Kicking myself a bit for not transferring out Reguilon for James before he went up in price yesterday. Now I can’t afford him.

Are we going to get burned by not having James?

I'm still recovering from when I signed James last season after a good performance and he proceeded to get me about 3 points in 9 gameweeks, whilst Cancelo (who I transferred out expecting him to be dropped) went berserk

It was quite a big score though. It’s more based on the fact that Chelsea wingbacks are playing so high up they may as well be wingers.

Any advise on what to do this week. I'd rather not waste my FT's

    2FT's

    Martinez (BRE)
TAA (CHE) Dunk (EVE) Cresswell (CRY) Shaw (wol)
Salah (CHE) Raphina (bur) Fernandes (wol) Barnes (nor)

Is there an argument to bench Shaw?

Wolves have looked up for it, United a bit leaky. Livramento and Ayling are on my bench with great fixtures...

Thought about it. Trouble with Shaw (at the moment) is he looks close to attacking returns quite often, so even conceding isn't the end of the world.

You don’t just have him in for clean sheets though do you, and as good as Ayling and Livs fixtures look, I’m still not confident of cleanies. So I’d stick with him. Just

I'm a United fan and I wouldn't bother with any United defenders - until Varane is settled at least. So yeah, you've got some great options on the bench which I'd utilise personally.

If Llorente's back, which is a possibility, I'd definitely be considering Ayling to start

I wouldn’t. Southampton likely concede, Newcastle looked good going forward Vs West Ham. Wolves yet to score & Shaw the most likely for attacking returns

I don't think United has looked leaky at all. Look at the two gosls they have conceded, amazing screamer and big deflection. I thunk Shaw has looked quite good attacking wise also. Definitely wouldn't bench him

Yeah let's all jump on Kane.

    1) Hardly any preseason
    2) In a not particularly attack minded Spurs
    3) Against a team which actually aren't that bad
    4) Whilst losing/not selecting one of; Kane/Bruno/Lukaku who have all returned so far this season
    5) Whilst Son is still there, £2.3mil cheaper and has already got returns

Yeah makes sense, go for it guys.

This is some heavy confirmation bias and fear of Kane going crazy this week

Spurs were under Mourinho last year and Son and Kane still went crazy

This year will be about only having 2 premiums and moving for captains

These 2 weeks i prefer Kane Son and Bruno

Then Salah comes in week 5

Positive consequence of Tottenham's involvement in Europa Conference League.

Second string will play all the early group games but premier league fixtures will always be on a Sunday following ECL game. So, Kane highly likely to get full weeks rest between games.

      Thoughts?

If Spurs don't want the humiliation of being dumped out of a Euro non-league comp at the first hurdle, they start at least some of the big guns. May even give Kane a chance to get match fit.

Hardly a humiliation, Nuno will just say it wasn't a priority and everyone will accept that. For Spurs, they'd be better off out of it.

To un-balanced for me,That midfield is not great.Rashford back in training so Greenwood will only probably have a couple more games before he is even more of a rotation risk.
