FPL Gameweek 3 round-up: Saturday goals, assists, bonus and injuries

Michail Antonio (£7.8m) consolidated his position at the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings with a third successive double-digit haul on Saturday, while Ferran Torres (£7.0m) underscored his ‘out of position’ appeal with two goals and an assist.

West Ham’s draw with Crystal Palace and Manchester City’s thrashing of Arsenal were two of seven Premier League matches that took place today, the main talking points of which we’ll discuss in this our first Gameweek 3 round-up.

Our usual, more detailed Scout Notes will follow for all of the day’s games but in the meantime, our ressurected Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, PROJECTED BONUS

KEY FPL TALKING POINTS

  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) scored another penalty for Everton but had to fight off Richarlison (£7.5m) for the responsibility of taking the Toffees’ effort from 12 yards, with the Brazilian still visibly irked at full-time.

“We had this conversation before and I told him if we have two penalties, the first one is Dominic’s and the second one is his” – Rafael Benitez on Richarlison

  • Calvert-Lewin, Antonio and Danny Ings (£8.1m) kept up their 100% record of avoiding blanks in 2021/22. Gabriel Jesus (£8.5m), again playing on the right flank for Manchester City on Saturday, has joined them in the top four forwards for points after back-to-back double-digit hauls.
  • Newcastle conceded a penalty for the third game in a row in their 2-2 draw with Southampton. Up next for the Magpies is Manchester United, who were awarded more spot-kicks in 2020/21 than any other side.
  • Brandon Williams (£4.0m) is now yet another name to consider in the budget FPL defender pool as he was handed his first Premier League start for Norwich on Saturday. All of the £4.2m-and-under defenders blanked but Tino Livramento (£4.1m) again caught the eye, with one of the three chances he created being spooned over from close range by Moussa Djenepo (£5.5m). Kostas Tsimikas (£4.2m) lost his place as expected, with Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) fit again.
  • Pontus Jansson (£4.5m) moved joint-second in the FPL defenders’ standings; Brentford’s defence was breached for the first time this season but it was he who provided the assist for Ivan Toney‘s (£6.4m) first ever top-flight goal. No club has conceded fewer big chances than the Bees in 2021/22 (one).
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) continued where he left off last week with his forays infield. It’s worth monitoring his positioning going forward as Mohamed Salah (£12.6m) was pushed noticeably wider, with his goal and only big chance coming from the penalty spot.

INJURIES AND BANS

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) was flagged as a doubt with an ongoing toe problem for Gameweek 3 but he needed treatment for what appeared to be a thigh problem in Everton’s win over Brighton, leaving the field soon after; no word has yet emerged from the Toffees’ camp over the severity of the issue.

Yerry Mina (£5.0m) and Solly March (£5.5m) missed this match with a knock and a minor hamstring injury respectively but neither problem is thought to be serious.

Joel Veltman (£4.4m) was among the substitutes for Albion after his recent spell in self-isolation, while Neal Maupay (£6.5m) recovered from a shoulder issue.

Frank Onyeka (£5.0m), John McGinn (£6.0m) and Jacob Ramsey (£4.5m) were the new names who missed out after positive coronavirus tests but Nicolas Pepe‘s (£7.3m) illness that kept him out of Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester City isn’t Covid-related.

Villa’s problems extended beyond McGinn and Ramsey, with Tyrone Mings (£5.0m) missing out with a cracked rib and Ezri Konsa (£5.0m) substituted with a knee problem.

The Villans did at least welcome back Ollie Watkins (£7.3m), who emerged as a second-half substitute.

Ricardo Pereira (£5.5m) faces a scan on the hamstring injury he picked up in Leicester City’s win over Norwich, meanwhile.

The same applies to Roberto Firmino (£8.9m) after his early withdrawal in the game against Chelsea.

Granit Xhaka (£5.0m) and Reece James (£5.6m) were both dismissed in their respective games, the former facing three domestic games out and the latter just the one.

FPL OWNERSHIP AND CAPTAINCY – TOP 10K

While it’s still early days to be trusting the top 10,000 as a barometer of FPL performance, the figures are often a sight more useful than the overall ownership numbers when it comes to assessing active Fantasy managers.

Antonio is now the most-owned player in the top 10k and there is quite the template forming around him, with nine assets boasting an ownership in excess of 80%.

It’s advantage to the Saturday captainers as Antonio and Mohamed Salah (£12.6m) both racked up double-digit hauls in their respective games.

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 3

Another Gameweek and another set of table-topping numbers posted by Antonio, whose tallies of five shots in the box and 13 penalty area touches have yet to be bettered.

Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) is an intriguing name on the above list: he has now had more shots in the box (seven) than any other Manchester City asset this season.

There were more eye-catching figures registered by Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile. The Liverpool’s Gameweek 3 total of five chances created has only been trumped by Jack Grealish (£8.0m) so far and takes him to 15 for the season, four more than any other player.

Jesus’s new role for City has seen him rack up seven key passes over the last two Gameweeks, a total that only Alexander-Arnold can better.

Three £5.5m midfielders bossed the non-penalty expected goals (xG) stats on Saturday, although all bar 0.06 of Mohamed Elyounoussi‘s (£5.5m) total came in the same incident that led to his goal.

Conor Gallagher (£5.5m) is a name to monitor: no player has had more big chances than the Chelsea loanee (three) in the last two Gameweeks.

        its ronaldo...

but on the other side bruno is one of the best penalty takers in the world and the conversion rate in his last two years is 96%, which is crazy high, think he has missed just once. Ronaldo has a conversion rate of 85% in the same period.

It feels like an age. I feel old just thinking about it. It's as if Ronaldo has come back from the FPL grave. Most of the time we could only ever have two of those guys. As a United fan, I remember I hardly ever had Gerrard.

Crazy innit. I remember Cech and Reina were solid picks too and I actually am fairly convinced Mendy is one of the best gk picks this season.

I even came up with a fixture rotation. Hadn't even heard off FFS was figuring it all out from scratch. I had Laursen in defence rotating with a cheap forward lol. Type of thing that shouldn't work but it worked perfectly. Laursen scoring goals and cleanies when I start him, cheap forward ticking over when I start him. Was beautiful

Had a quick look to see if there is any truth in this Jiminez header worries.

He sits around 7th 12th amongst forwards in categories of Aerial Duals, Aerial Duals won, Flick ons, Headed clearances, Headed attempts.

Wolves look to have played the ball on the deck far more than the teams above him in the list though. So I'm not reading too much into it.

Eye test vs Manure is required to confirm, but stats suggest nothing in the scared to head it narrative.

Ok, thanks. I haven't seen Wolves playing a lot, but perhaps just coincidence that those few minutes ball was played to his feet. We'll have to check his headed attempts and amount of crossing also to see if there are any significant changes in tactics. But eye test time is soon.

Would you be still considering Gray while getting DCL?
Not sure about the double up.

Tempted by Torres but already had Gundo for the first two weeks and it ended badly…

Sarr and Adama looking good considering their fixtures as well but sound dodgy at the same time.

    Any words of wisdom?

The double up concept is meaningless. Pick Gray if you think he'll outscore Traore and Sarr

Also, it’s easier to judge players’ worth if you keep them for longer than 2 gameweeks.

I'm waiting for the Watford vs Tottenham game today, I haven't caught Watford live yet. Traore I've seen twice now and both times he looked incredible but cant finish. Not sure what to do with that. You imagine he will start converting soon but its not always the way.

I've owned Gray from the start and he won't be going anywhere until I wildcard. Fixtures are great and he is a snug price point. Will he outscore Traore or Sarr over the next 3 or 4. I wouldn't expect it but who knows.

Grealish surely nailed to start champs league games. So game time might be managed.

      For me it’s A.
I’m thinking of Barnes to Torres
      Ings to DCL.

Had ear marked Sarr for Barnes this week. With favourable fixtures. 4% ownership could make a difference over next few Gameweeks.

There seems to be an interesting lack of choice in the 8-10m striker bracket if you consider fixtures/injuries/position a factor. Current viable candidates tend to include the following:

Jesus: playing wide and not shooting (but getting assists)
    DCL: might be injured
    Ings: Bad fixtures
Antonio (7.9): We already have this guy
    Bamford (7.9): Form?

    Viable alternatives?

Lacazette: Has an amazing run of fixtures and was good in pre-season
Cavani: Will he start today and keep his spot?

I think I fancy the Arsenal man, am I crazy to consider it?

It's not just about the City game or that we've lost all 3 without scoring any, but our overall gameplay has been shockingly poor so far. We were lacklustre against Brentford, and Chelsea and City cruised past us even without shifting gears. Thought a few players will be back after the IB, still won't be shocked if we draw 1-1 or sth with Norwich as things stand. Watch a couple games after the IB and decide from there imo.

The coach hasn't changed. The players haven't changed (White is even a positive change, but he got Covid too). There hasn't been a huge overhaul to start this season

The *only* difference has been the absentees, and the domino effect of losing those absentees on an only recently gelled squad

Arsenal started the season with a preseason squad, and still mauled West Brom earlier this week

            1. Philosopher's Stones

That was the West Brom under 23 squad, but yeah, if you wanna go with our players right now, take your chances as it's your call ultimately. I was just offering my humble suggestions.

You said it's not about the circumstances of the result but the gameplay, hence my response

Arteta hasn't changed tactics except to accommodate his absentees. So that means the squad of 2021 is still right there. No major sales. No major difference in how they play. Just absentees, and the effects of losing said absentees

Brentford could have 10 men behind the ball and keep out an attack lacking Saka, Auba and Laca

Chelsea and City are some levels above current Arsenal at their best, but the matches got worsened by the defensive absentees and red card

Do you expect Arsenal to be relegated?

We did go on a good run end of last season, but think I speak for the majority of Arsenal fans when I say we're absolutely not happy with how Arteta has got his team playing football. There have been absentees, but so does every team. Doesn't excuse being so lacklustre as a unit and the tactical inadequacy of the manager tho.
I don't expect Arsenal to get relegated, but a finish in the Top 8 will be above our expectations.
I know the major issue lies in our owners and the board, which I'm hopeful will change soon.
Ofcourse we'll go on sort of run sometime, but I'm not sure when. Probably under a new manager if Arteta does get sacked sometime around Christmas if things don't change, but don't hold your breath with the inept board and owners that we have.

The coach is clueless and the recruitment has been as bad as his tactical nous. They have had a some decent runs. Performing at something approaching what you would demand from such an expensive team. But the good spells have been in spite of Arteta. ESR and Saka have kept him in a job. Two players he had nothing to do with and refused to play one for ages when it was so obvious he was needed. Of course they will improve from dead last. But mid table team

                But not relegation candidates

Which means we can get something from a good run of fixtures in FPL

Covid, illness and injuries. Same team that was in top 5 for 2021 stats until the Covid bout hit the squad in GW1, and now they're returning... After strengthening in the summer window. Plus, City was affected by a red card

Same public reaction will change to awe and surprise when they ramp it up when fully fit

It'll then change to hindsight and "How didn't we see this coming?"

West Brom 0 - 6 Arsenal: Auba, Pépé, Saka and Laca. This week. Same coach, same players, just absentees for now

Heck, City was 14th at a point last season

I'm not talking about ranks and stats though, as it doesn't mean much this early in the season. Our overall approach to the game has been poor. Could change ofcourse, but yeah, as I said, if you fancy our players right now, be my guest.

You need your good players to approach the game well

I'm trying to pass along the message that the approach you're seeing is based on the players who are on the pitch, as nothing has changed about the coaching tactics of earlier this year

It takes a top-tier or very passionate team to look good when major lynchpins are absent. Arsenal is not that team

Nothing that has happened to Arsenal in GWs 1 to 3 has been surprising within appropriate context, meaning their comeback is predictable

There is the chance that the mood around the squad doesn't improve and they just keep slipping down until Arteta is sacked, yes. Just seems unlikely, is my take

Norwich and Burnley, after an international break of recovery. One Arsenal asset only. If they're still bad, sell before Spurs. If they're good, keep until fixtures turn again

Struggling to put a decent team together with even a single premium forward.

Too much value in midfield (Son, Mount, Jota, etc) to go ultra cheap.

Thinking two decent penalty takers up front with Antonio (Bamford, Jimi) might be the way to go.

    1. Jonesfromthere
      • 11 Years

So many strikers are great options, that’s the issue. Only 3 spots which really is 2 given Antonio is a must. CR7, Wilson, Jimi, DCL, Jimenez, Bamford, Ings, it’s such a tough call.

      1. Drexl Spivey
        • 5 Years

I suppose it comes down to penalties really. Everyone and their mum are going to end up captaining CR7 if/when he takes them off Bruno.

Would I captain Jimi or Bamford to fill the void? Pfft... It really is pushing it a bit.

Currently on wildcard and done so with the intention of having Ronaldo and Lukaku up front. But as you say with so many mid priced options, replacing Lukaku with DCL for example, allows a far better midfield.

Will have to make some tough calls over the next 2 weeks

    3 gray facts:
    - I've had Gray since the start
    - He's always been on my bench
    - I bench boosted. On GW 1 for his lovely 2 pointer

That's frustrating. Keep him on your bench, or you know what will inevitably happen

A natural human trait to bemoan "what could have happened" Suceck last year?

Actually on WC currently - seriously thinking of swapping him for Doucoure.

Make a 0.1 off him while I also expect Doucoure to outscore him long term.

5.5 is a lot to pay for a bench midfielder, although it’s definitely a viable option. Always having a decent player first on your bench will pay off sometimes and can be worth it if you start players that have injury problems.

You’ve just got to put up with the fact you’ll bench his points more often than not.

Last year I averaged 1 injury/no show/rotation each week; unless I had Soucek and then all were fine (Grrr)

yes that was the case because of my GW1 Bench boost.
Was always planning to WC gw3.

Now not sure i wana remove him!

Made a nice start to the season with a 400k rank. Time to shift Ings, Barnes and Tsimi. 1.2m itb and 2FT. Any thoughts on these options for a -4?

    Jesus, Torres, Dier/Coady

    Jesus, Jota, Livra

    Jimenez, Torres, Alonso/Laporte

    Jimenez, Jota, Matip/Christensen

Jimi wagon has had new bodywork and a tank full of gas

All we need now is a goal against Man U
    To start the ignition

    Ings > jimi, all aboard!

For sure. I'd sacrifice points for Shaw if it gives Jimi a boost.

Interested on what people are thinking regarding Ronaldo please:

    (A) Definitely buying
    (B) Will keep Bruno for now unless Ronaldo will definitely start vs Newcastle
    (C) Just going to monitor for the time being
    (D) Avoiding unless 11.5 or less
    (E) Totally avoiding

    Thanks.

      C and never owned Bruno

If Kane sucks a one week punt vs Newcastle might tempt me

Thinking B but will become A once I know he’ll play, and that’s just presuming he will have penalties in his locker

      (c) for now. Potentially got other issues with Greenwood and Tsimikas to remove. Also looking to move Ings on.

There's plenty of value in the forwards this season and think we can monitor for a bit.
