What are the best premium player ownership strategies in FPL?

Ex-FPL winner Simon March: How to avoid getting carried away with your GW1 picks

This season is starting to feel like a throwback to the good ol’ days of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) where there was a practical overabundance of viable premium options and every one felt like they were essential. Those were the days where titans such as Ronaldo, Henry, Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard and Drogba all walked the same patch of earth, each vying for a place in our team on their way to achieving FPL immortality.

Whether we’ll see the likes of those again time will tell but, with Spurs’ Harry Kane (£12.3m) and Son Heung-min (£10.1m), Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m), Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m), Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Sadio Mane (£11.9m) and Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes (£12.1m) and, soon, Cristiano Ronaldo all being options and all priced in double-figures, FPL managers will, once again, have some big decisions to make.

Premium-priced players, which for the purposes of this article will refer to players listed at £10.0m and above, are premium for a reason and, while they don’t necessarily guarantee the highest points or, in fact, points at all (I’m looking at you Bruno), they do tend to be the players who net big hauls with the greatest regularity, hence their popularity when it comes to captaincy.

Given that how we manage our premium player choices looks likely to be key to how our teams perform this season, this article will look at a few strategies FPL managers can consider when it comes to selecting the heavy-hitters.

How Many Premiums?

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 31?

Probably the most common tactic when it comes to premium players in FPL is to begin the season with two heavy-hitters and then, maybe, try and fit a third in there when your team value has increased or viable budget options emerge.

This strategy helps to avoid a potential overreliance on your heavy-hitters to perform week-in/week-out as the budget can still be spread throughout the squad. Typically, when we get into the realms of three or more premiums, the sacrifices in the squad become more evident and the importance of those heavy-hitters delivering increases.

That is not to say that the presence of premium players automatically weakens the rest of the squad. Every season is different and where you have an abundance of high-quality enabling players at relatively low cost, the inclusion of multiple heavy-hitters might not be too much of a negative at all. That is an assessment each of us will have to make, but rarely will a strategy involving heavy investment in the big-money assets avoid the need to make trade-offs entirely.

For me, given that you can only captain one player each week, more than two premiums (assuming they rotate reasonably well) feels somewhat inefficient and I tend to lean towards spreading the money throughout the squad in the hope that I can generate points from multiple sources. I’m a bit like Pep Guardiola is with midfielders when it comes to mid-priced FPL players; I’d fill my squad with them entirely if I could. I definitely don’t like being too dependent on a handful of premium assets to perform. However, this perspective is easier to say than to do, particularly when there are multiple heavy-hitters who you do not own, punishing you with huge scores each Gameweek.

    Nice little football merry-go-round:

    Kean from Everton to Juventus
Ronaldo from Juventus to Man Utd
James from Man Utd to Leeds
Man Utd keep Lingard (to take James' spot)
West Ham sign Vlasic (to take Lingard's loan spot)

      Lookman to Spurs
      Royston Drenthe to City.

Everton and Lingard the losers. Everton are now left with Tosun as backup for DCL. A guy who has made 25 appearances in two seasons.

Richarlison will hold the line if DCL is out. Then Broadhead / Gordon (and even Iwobinho) ahead of Tosun. Not even been on the bench this year.

In the dizzy heights of top 15k, 2 free transfers any suggestions?

    Sanchez | Steele
    TAA | Shaw | Veltman | White | Livramento

Ultimately I think 1 premium mid + 1 premium fwd is the best structure to be going forward with, so you have a slot assigned to both positions.

We are quite similar position and I went with Lukaku, as I prefer him over the medium term.
Ronaldo if you really want to go for it.

      1. Jonesfromthere
        • 11 Years

Agreed re team structure. Having two premium forwards makes no sense given the sheer number of options at mid-price.

Good luck man, Lukaku could seriously haul against Villa. Haven't ruled him out myself.

          10m+
Mids: Salah/Bruno/KdB/Son (dont view Mane/Sterling as anything but differential options to their counterparts)
          Fwds: Ronny/Rommy/Kane/Vardy

Pre-season 2 mids was all the rage because really only Vardy was available in the other bracket. Now the arrays are far more balanced.

Pulled the trigger on a few moves last night for a -4 (brought in Lukaku & Jota)

    Sanchez 4
    TAA Shaw White/Ayling (Liv)
    Salah Jota Torres Ben (Happy)
    Lukaku(c) DCL Antonio
    0.9m float

    Planned moves
    GW5: Ben --> Raph, GW6: Save, GW7: Shaw --> Chilly/James & Torres/Jota --> Mount/Havertz.

Rotation is inevitable with mid week European games added to the mix, great as a west ham fan but maybe not for fpl, expect benrahma to keep playing with the form he is in but there is always ta chance the odd game there will be rotation.

      Yes

Andy did a poll for one of his videos asking when Ronaldo would be coming into people's teams. Given the wording of the question I though oh sure, maybe GW5 or whenever the fixtures agree with the security of starting. But now thinking about it I will probably steer clear until absolutely essential, or at least not move heaven and earth for him

That is absolutely astonishing that he managed to win without Salah. That's a case of him having such an incredible season that he managed to win despite not owning a 9m player who hit 300 points. Unbelievable

He’s a rotation risk. Him and Silva for one spot basically. Christensen has been outstanding and Silva is ageing but I think Silva is more likely to be rested in Europe and avoid the away trips especially.

For me, a plan to rotate premiums based on ease of schedule has flaws.

These are, theoretically, "big game players", who score points against everyone. They're also potentially going to play fewer minutes against a weaker team, if the game's already been put to bed, especially if there's also a big European/cup game on the horizon.

As a development idea for this site, I'd find it useful if the cup scheduling (domestic & Euro) could be inserted into the (Members'?) ticker.

I think with captaincy being such a huge part of the game, the catching those huge hauls is crucial.

Very rarely will you see a huge haul against other top teams.

Yup, this is what I've been saying for some time. One thing I'd appreciate is an article with up-to-date data on which premiums can be considered 'flat-track-bullies' always played against weaker opponents, and which raise their games against the best but are given short-to-no minutes against weaker opposition.

Who would be an example of the latter? The scout article yesterday had all the Premos (Salah, Bruno, Lukaku, Kane) scoring fewer points on average vs the top 6 than the rest of the league. Personally I think every player has a lower expected output against better teams and 'fixture proof' is a myth impatient players like to talk about when they kneejerk to bring in the latest flashy player despite having bad fixtures.

Manchester City is not in the current conversation, buy KDB will be back and demanding ownership in time. Pep tends to rotate big players out of the team against lower opposition when CL games are due. Tuchel wasn't in that position last season, so I don't know if Lukaku will be vulnerable to rotation.

Everyone who knows me, knows about my never ending love for Manchester United. The years I spent in this club where absolutely amazing and the path we’ve made together is written in gold letters in the history of this great and amazing institution.

I can’t even start to explain my feelings right now, as I see my return to Old Trafford announced worldwide. It’s like a dream come true, after all the times that I went back to play against Man. United, and even as an opponent, to have always felt such love and respect from the supporters in the stands. This is absolutely 100% the stuff that dreams are made of!

My first domestic League, my first Cup, my first call to the Portuguese National team, my first Champions League, my first Golden Boot and my first Ballon d’Or, they were all born from this special connection between me and the Red Devils. History has been written in the past and history will be written once again! You have my word!

    I’m right here!
    I’m back where I belong!
Let’s make it happen once again!

Not really!! Don’t fancy spending my money itb until we know Ronaldo price, and I work out how to get Lukaku, so will keep Sanchez for now given fixtures and no obvious 4.5 improvements.

I think he'll be 12.5, but most people who want to bring him in can easily budget for that. If he's 13m, it will give people a tough decision to make.

Vast majority of active players would. I can't see why you would ever consider Kane for example, if they were the same price. Was still scoring for fun at the Euros and had the hardest games. It would also make Bruno a non-option.

          1. Cok3y5murf
            • 7 Years
            2 years, 7 months ago

Because form and fixtures would play a part. It's only been 3 weeks. Kane, I currently wouldn't, but that's more due to how Spurs have looked.

Bruno will be less valuable than before but far from a non-option because even if he loses penalties, his assists will go up. People just getting overexcited. Need I remind you that he just scored a hattrick without penalties...

This works too. Would just question whether Lukaku outscores United assets in GW5 and 6. I think he can score a goal in both those weeks but may have a low ceiling.

Willing to eat these words later in the season but I think Salah and Lukaku will comfortably outscore Ronaldo.

I'll definitely have him at some point, but I won't be rushing in without seeing him play a few games first. United are an inconsistent team with an average manager, he's not a free pick at 12.5

Let's see. Ronaldo did score more than Lukaku in Serie A. Personally think anything less than 13m is too cheap. One of the greatest players of all time who's still capable of scoring lots of goals. You sure you aren't interested for Newcastle at home?
