What can FPL managers expect from new Crystal Palace forward Odsonne Edouard?

Crystal Palace completed the signing of long-term target Odsonne Edouard (£6.5m) on transfer deadline-day, for a reported fee of £14m plus add-ons.

The highly-rated striker endured a successful spell at former club Celtic, where he scored 86 goals in 179 appearances, but was facing an uncertain future with just one year remaining on his contract.

Now at Selhurst Park, it is expected that he will compete with Christian Benteke (£6.4m) and Jean-Philippe Mateta (£5.4m) for the lone-striker role under Patrick Vieira.

Upon his signing, Chairman Steve Parish said:

“Odsonne is a player of proven quality. He was a player in high demand and I’m delighted he chose to join Crystal Palace as another fantastic addition to our squad.”

Edouard has thrived in the Scottish top-flight, but what exactly will he bring to Palace and can he make the step-up to the Premier League?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions and assess his potential Fantasy Premier League (FPL) worth in the article below.

THE HISTORY OF ODSONNE EDOUARD

Born in French Guiana, Edouard began his career in France with AF Bobigny and the Paris Saint-Germain Academy.

During his time in PSG’s development system, he was a prolific goalscorer, netting over 60 goals in two seasons, and also impressed at international level, bagging 17 goals from 15 France Under-17 appearances.

That ability saw him named PSG fans Academy Player of the Year for 2015 and earnt him a professional contract with the senior side shortly after. However, he failed to make a first-team appearance, and spent most of his time in the reserves.

As a result, Edouard was sent out on loan to Toulouse in 2016, which is where he made his competitive debut, scoring one goal in 17 appearances.

He then joined Celtic on loan the following summer, before signing a permanent deal in 2018. His excellent performances in Scotland helped the club win three Scottish Premiership titles and four domestic Cups, while individually, he won the SFWA Footballer of the Year 19/20 award as the league’s top goalscorer.

His record after moving to Glasgow in 2017 speaks for itself.

Internationally, he has represented France at U17 to U21 level, and in the coming seasons will hope to make the step-up to the seniors.

PROFILE

Edouard, 23, is a quick technically gifted centre-forward, who’s movement and positioning sees him often drift wide to the left.

What can FPL managers expect from new Crystal Palace forward Odsonne Edouard? 8

Odsonne Edouard’s touch heat map 2020/21 via Sofa Score

He is happy to drop deep to link-play or run in behind the opposition backline, something Palace have been crying out for during the opening three weeks of the season.

“We needed to change by running a little bit more in behind. In the first half it was easy for West Ham to defend because we always wanted the ball at our feet, but in the second half we stretched them a bit more and that allowed our forwards to create a situation to go inside of them, and we scored the two goals.” – Patrick Vieira, speaking after the 2-2 draw at West Ham United in Gameweek 3

However, it is his finishing ability which really stands out. He is composed, capable with either foot, while his quick feet means that he can fire off shots from tight spaces.

Above stats from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area and WhoScored

Edouard’s underlying stats for goal threat were well above those of any of his new team-mates but, we should factor in the inferior level of competition in the Scottish top flight.

Nevertheless, 4.2 shots and 0.7 goals per 90 minutes are encouraging numbers, even accounting for the expected drop-off in the Premier League.

However, at this stage we should note that Edouard’s output was boosted by a share of dead-ball duties at Celtic, including direct free-kicks and penalties.

THE PROSPECTS

Palace have struggled in front of goal this season, failing to score in their opening two matches, so it was clear that they needed to strengthen up front.

The centre-forward role has been taken by either Benteke or Mateta so far, neither of whom have scored, so with Edouard fully fit and ready to go, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he was thrown straight in against Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 4.

Indeed, Edouard’s last appearance came for Celtic last Sunday as he played 68 minutes for the Bhoys in their 1-0 Old Firm loss against Rangers at Ibrox, so his fitness shouldn’t be an issue.

Encouragingly for Palace, they did show signs of improvement in the second half of Saturday’s 2-2 draw at West Ham United, which they will need to build on given their testing schedule:

That suggests that we have plenty of time to scout Edouard, before possibly making a move in Gameweeks 9 or 11, if he shows us enough potential that is.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Finally, Palace have landed a recognised goalscorer, who offers Vieira a different type of striker who will look to make runs in behind.

Importantly, he will also add energy to his team.

In 2020/21, the Eagles had the oldest squad in the Premier League, but have recruited well over the summer and prioritised youth by bringing in younger players with real potential like Marc Guehi (£4.5m), Michael Olise (£5.4m) and Conor Gallagher (£5.5m).

However, we should of course factor in the lower standard of the Scottish Premiership when assessing Edouard, and it does perhaps feel like he will need penalties and a share of direct free-kicks if he is to truly compete with the likes of Adam Armstrong (£6.0m) and Ivan Toney (£6.4m) for a place in our FPL squads.

Now the challenge for Edouard is to settle quickly and consistently deliver. If Palace can get that out of him, he might just be worth adding to our Watchlists ahead of their fixture swing.

    Currently on:

    Sanchez (Steele)
TAA / Coady / Shaw / Ayling (Duffy)
Salah / Jota / Torres (Gilmour) (Allan)
    Lukaku / Ronaldo / Dennis

Quite a grim bench, and starting Dennis, but they'll all play if and when Torres doesn't.

You’ve tried to fit in 6 good options but the rest of your team is really bad so I would ditch one or two and redistribute the funds to add more squad balance.

Tough call as there is talk of them trying to shift to a back 4 who knows who drops out.

I'd probably gamble on Kilman over Coady as think he's started the season pretty well.

At 5.5 he can prove to be a great pick. I think he got more goals that Traore last season. Will he play regularly though?

Hard to say right now, but you would expect at least one of him or Trincão to start. Trincão has had three chances and blanked, so every chance for Podence to claim a spot. They could even both start, Net is a long way off returning.

Believe it or not, Traore has finished within 0.5g of his xG every season. He's putting up huge numbers. If he can convert just a few chances, he could be a really good asset.

You're kidding yourself. He peaked (very averagely) the season before last, then followed up last season with less than half the goals and assists from similar minutes. He's simply just not good enough as a footballer to match his speed and strength.

This was an interesting read re: Traore and his new role. He never hoovered up that kind of xG playing under Nuno.

He's been played mostly as a RM/RWB most of his career. So he wasn't involved in the attack as directly as he is now. He's playing as a LAM and is basically involved in every single Wolves attack. At 6m, if he starts scoring even half of his expected goals he'll be a good pick. He's already almost equalled his expected goals from last year.

He had a very poor season last time around, as Wolves did generally.
This time last year they were being touted as a top 6 side.

He has had a good start this time around against tough opposition but somewhat paradoxically I dont think Traore's stats will hold up against the weaker teams. Its easy enough to counter when someone is trying to roundhouse you, but if they keep doing a low kick/block you've got to change your strategy.

I've limited myself to Traore and Sarr as Barnes replacements:

Sarr (6.0) - overall good fixtures next 3GWs: WOL, Nor, NEW - WOL ofc the toughest one, however, can see a nice potential for counterattacks. The only noticeable of WAT was during the first GW - over 1.3. Sarr with overall xG: 0.43 and xA: 0.62.
The numbers should be better with the incoming fixtures. Definitely Sarr is their main man, just ofc we can't be sure that WAT will be performing better.

Traore (6.0). - imo the best fixtures next 3GWs: Wat, BRE, Sou. Wolves with good xG of over 1.3 each of their games so far - how it ended is another story. Traore with xG:1.5 and xA: 0.61.
He passed the eyet-test. Said that, we can't be sure that they will start scoring, however, they look really good as a team.

True, the team is more balanced without them. With the fixtures and form that DCL, bamf, and Antonio have coming up, I just think their value is hard to ignore. If I pick players based on public opinion, I end up kicking myself even harder if they fail. Thats why I dumped Shaw this week also.

I mean you know people are going to mention the no Salah but I can see you can't possibly squeeze any more money out of that unless you went Torres to an inform 6 to 6.5 with good fixtures.

I'm sure Coleman down to a 4.5 has been thought about but 8 like the 5m price point. You have so much flexibility to switch to some good options there. 4.5 are really grave yard picks this season.

        Yeah good points, thanks.

Im hesitant on shaw however with varane in perhaps the defense with keep some clean sheets and with ronaldos air threat perhaps we can see more assists from shaw.
I tried coady ahead of coleman but not sold on wolves nor am i sold on leeds defense after lfc fixture. Any suggestions?
For torres, i pressume he will play with some rotation risk as expected- he is my first choice to sell with mount as a likely replacement around gwk7

I like the team dude, worst case its a minus 4 to remove Torres if he gets dropped and upgrade Mane if Mane goes on a bad run. I don't like Leeds defence at all and would rather wait to see how Wolves and Arsenal perform against the lesser teams.

Wouldn't want to commit to playing one of them every week. I don't personally like the Mane pick but I respect it. Have to pick who you get a hunch for.

The 0.5m is found from Coleman > 4.5m defender. Go Salah over Mane

Mane is 2.6m cheaper than Salah in FanTeam and I'm struggling to justify him... For 0.5m in FPL it's a no brainer.

Thoughts on this WC team? Too many options but I think I'm happy with this for now.

    Raya
    TAA - Shaw - Tierney
    Salah - Jota - Greenwood - Gray
    CR7 - DCL - Antonio

    4.0 - Duffy - Williams - Sissoko

Like it, greenwood might get limited minutes and I'm personally not sold on any form of Arsenal defence.. although I can see the appeal in Tierney.

Really happy with my WC, don't think I want to make too many changes, only one I'm tinkering with is DCL for one of Bamford or Jiminez at the moment, any comments/thoughts?

    Sa
    Trent - Rudiger - Semedo
    Salah - Raph - Torres - Gray
    CR7 - Antonio - DCL

Bench: Steele - Sissoko - Dier - Livramento 0.2m in the bank.

Ronaldo's missing the match in Azerbaijan makes my decision easier.

    Bruno+Ings to Greenwood+CR7 for -4.
Of course not yet while the international matches are going on.

Ings has really tough games, and buying Ronaldo and Greenwood, I would double United's attack for the next 3 games. After that, I can get in Lukaku or Mount, or both.

I'm not sure it can work in the long term with 3 mid forwards, and CR for GW 4-6, Lukaku GW 7-11 and Kane GW 12-... sounds tempting.

I don't see any urgent problems in the rest of the team, except Harrison, but his schedule will improve after Liverpool, and I hope for some points.

    Sanchez
    TAA, Shaw, Digne (Tsimikas, Amartey)
    Salah, Bruno*, Benrahma, Harrison (Bissouma)
    DCL, Ings*, Antonio

I think Ings is clinical enough to score against any team but Villa just aren't creating enough right now and with fixtures getting tough ..good time to get rid imo with better options around

I am not saying I am going to do this draft but just playing around and could get this on WC 4-3-3 not often used in teams. It looks OK for x3 heavy hitters.

    Sanchez / 4.0
Trent Tierney Semado Rudiger / Liv
Salah Benramha Gray / Allan Sissoko
    Lukaku Ronaldo Antonio

Enough ITB to do Benramha to Raph GW5 if wanted. Work go with as lots of good mid priced midfielders and flexibility is hampered by this structure.

The thing with Kane is that Son is soo much cheaper. Most wouldn't want to invest in both although that is a legitimate option given the fixtures.

12.3m for Kane would be a steal any other season. But this season is packed with premium picks, which makes it very exciting: Ronaldo, Bruno, Salah, Lukaku, Kane, Son, (Mane, Bruyne, Sterling, even the forgotten Aubameyang).

Kane's time will come when the fixtures are right. Bruno looks toast if he is off pens and DFKs. He's obviously still going to get points, but at that price I don't see he is going to be a percentage play again.

Not really, Bruno is double jabbed and lives in the UK so he has no problem. Ronaldo is still less likely to start based on having just signed (even if I do think he will start).

Hugely torn on whether to remove. I think Bruno will be a slight differential and I also think I prefer Salah (c) over the next 3 games. That said, Ronaldo could really punish.
