Who are the best Wolves attackers in FPL ahead of the Gameweek 4 fixture swing?

Wolverhampton Wanderers have one of the best runs of fixtures in the division from Gameweek 4 onwards, stretching right the way through to Gameweek 14.

For Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who prioritise fixtures over form, and especially for those on a Wildcard, Wolves’ defensive and attacking options are seriously worth considering.

Above: Wolves sit top of our Season Ticker over the next 11 Gameweeks

A manager losing their first three league matches in charge of a club is usually a cause for alarm but it doesn’t tell the full story here, as Bruno Lage has weirdly generated much optimism about his Wolves side after some well-rounded displays.

Offensively, Wolves boast the third-highest expected goals (xG) from open play tally (4.39), ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool.

At the back, they have the second-lowest xG from open play conceded (1.3) total despite having played against Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

Tight at the back

Since Gameweek 1, Lage has largely set up in a back three system which allows Wolves to create superiority in defensive numbers out wide.

Not only in their own defensive third, Wolves were also compact higher up the pitch, not allowing any United players to be left unmarked. Over the last three Gameweeks, Wolves have conceded only 33 crosses from the flanks (the second-lowest in the league).

As Harvey Barnes (£6.8m) also found out in Gameweek 1, Wolves’ defensive solidity prevented the likes of Jadon Sancho (£9.2m) and Luke Shaw (£5.5m) from building any kind of momentum from the left flank.

Based on his heatmap, Sancho largely spent his time closer to the halfway line rather than the byline which suggests how successful Wolves were in keeping him quiet, limiting him to zero attempts on goal in the process.

Above: Jadon Sancho’s heatmap in Gameweek 3, from the Premium Members Area

The usually creative Shaw also failed to make meaningful offensive contributions, creating zero chances from open play.

Such a disruption in United’s overall build-up play ultimately resulted in Bruno Fernandes (£12.1m) having only one shot inside the box whilst also creating only one chance – a significant drop-off in creative output for someone as influential as him.

With Ruben Neves (£5.5m) and Joao Moutinho (£5.0m) as the midfield shields, defending from the front has also been a recurrent theme in the early days of Lage’s tenure. Such a playing style allows Wolves to create a considerable amount of offensive turnovers in the opposition half which often leads to Wolves getting the ball quickly to Adama Traore (£6.0m), who can then launch a one-man counter.

However, despite this defensive toughness, they seemed to be letting in awkward goals that come out of nowhere. So far, they have been undone by a finish of the highest calibre from Jamie Vardy (£10.5m), a Dele Alli (£6.5m) penalty and a Mason Greenwood (£7.7m) goal from tight angle with an xG of 0.04, which suggests Wolves have been somewhat unlucky from a defensive standpoint.

If you are looking to invest in Wolves’ defensive options, Nelson Semedo (£4.9m) can be an excellent option as he’s able to potentially offer clean sheets as well as attacking returns, which we will touch upon shortly. Otherwise, Marcal or Conor Coady (both £4.5m) offer a slightly cheaper route to Wolves defence.

Strong attack

Moving onto the attack, Wolves also offer some of the best budget options in the game. The way they tend to overload up front in a 2-3-5 shape, with both full-backs pushed high up the pitch, makes Semedo an especially attractive defensive option.

Have to say I'm tempted by Trincao, was very unlucky not to score against MU thanks to AWB's great block and had another good chance that he rushed. But I'm also very keen on Sarr so I don't know that I'll be able to fit him in. Also slightly worried Podence might push him out a little.

I've been having the same debate.

I've done Bruno and Ings out with Ronaldo and Traore coming in so far. I prefer the fixtures for Traore has

I'm still debating whether to do Barnes to Sarr though, probably not worth a -4 I don't think but will likely do for GW5 when they play Norwich.

Sky say Spurs and Villa are involved in a row with Argentina over the availability of their players. The clubs say they were told the players would be allowed to return to the UK after the Brazil game on Sunday but Scaloni says there was no such agreement and that they'll be there for all 3 games, meaning they will all miss 2 gameweeks instead of one

If Argentina beat Brazil, I can see the Brazilian FA kicking off more to FIFA about the missing Prem players. Might be some last minute tinkering on WCs next week if FIFA do look at imposing any bans.

If Sancho's injury rules him out for a few weeks I think it could be a good shout short-term as I could see him playing on the left a few times again but otherwise I just don't like the idea of relying on someone as hard to predict as Pogba

I think there are unknowns with all Utd players now really except that Ronaldo will mainly be in the box waiting for chances to score!

Bruno will be off pens and might have to work back harder
Pogba might be a deeper role
Greenwood/ Sancho/ Rashford - possible only 1 gets to start out of them depending on the Pogba role

I’ve brought Semedo in currently, nothing particularly attacking wise other then touches in final third/penalty box, but it’s exciting to see him that far up the pitch.

Raul is definitely on the cards for me, but I’m a bit wary that he may have to isolate post internationals, is there any news on this?

    Sanchez
    James TAA Shaw Marcal
    Salah Benrahma Raphinha Gray
    Ronaldo Lukaku

    4.0 Livramento Brownhill Dennis

    With 0.2 itb

    Can be 3 4 3 or 4 4 2

2 big premiums up top who can switch with Kane or downgrade to DCL or back to Antonio if they don't work out.

Can Benrahma be West Ham cover enough? Is that even necessary with Europa looming?

3 most attacking defenders in the game (Shaw surely improved now with Varane to sure up the back and Ronaldo to turn crosses into goals).

3 playing subs. Although Dennis could go to 4.5 and the funds could be used to upgrade a mid after Watford's good run comes to an end.

    Any thoughts?

Convincing myself of it. Holding WC and getting to it with a couple of minus 4s over next 2 weeks. 0.2 itb covers a couple of potential pricing issues.
Question is: how many points will James, Shaw, Gray, Benrahma score over the season compared to Antonio and the 4.5- 5.0 mil alternative defender combos?

Weird selection of players you don't really know what to expect from.

Traore is racking up shots but is a famous non-scorer. I don't know much about Sarr and Trincao but they shoot a lot as well. As for Pepe and Saka, the first needs to be spanked, can be world-class on his day, but won't be bothered most of the year, and Saka was sent from God, but not to score goals.

My question is, when do I pull the trigger? Right now I would earn an extra 0.3. Will Ings drop in price? Will the others rise? Is it worth to wait for the international break to end? I have no clue.

    1. GreennRed

Wait. Consider why you're taking a hit or hits in the meantime. Seems to be a trend towards selling Danny Ings, a forward in form. Villa's fixtures look trickier for them to get a result on paper. Doesn't mean he won't get attacking points.

      1. Devos
        • 2 Years

I understand what you're saying, but I can't ignore the difference in fixtures between Ings and Bamford. I might wait one GW, cause both would be benched in GW4.

I'll use my two FT on Cash and Mbeumo > Semedo and ESR. Still not sure if I should do it now or right before the deadline.

I have both at the moment... It's a question of which one I sacrifice in order to bring in Jota and Ronaldo.

Similar, as Grealish's assist output should be similar to DCL's goal return.

You don't fancy a punt on Torres for 1m less?

It's not a question of who I buy. It's who I sacrifice... I have both Grealish and DCL atm.

Ah ok, that's tricky. Counter intuitively, I'd lose Grealish of the two due to Everton's next 3. But it depends on DCL's fitness / thigh strain.

Close, but I think I'd swing with 3 strikers as I imagine G is not exempt from the roulette. DCL ticking over nicely too.

    Hello mods

I’ve just been charged 17.50 pounds to my credit card for membership. Whilst I have no problem to take this membership and contribute your business as I’m very happy with overall experience in this community, id be interested to why did you charger my credit card without any approval or application from my end.

    Thanks

was it via paypal? Last year, they setup a subscription which you need to cancel if you don't wish to renew. The wording is very clear when I renewed this year about it being a subscription.

Seems they don't inform you now that the autorenew option hasn't been unticked.

I'm not sure though. Someone posted that. Not sure how legal it is to not inform you that you're subscription autorenews. Should be giving you adequate notice to decide methinks.

I have no problem with it but yours is not the first complaint I have seen. Seems some better communication would be useful.

Whats your advice on this one guys - i think a WC is too drastic. Ings out is obvious and concious of not missing out on Ronaldo. what would you do with this team

    £0.5m ITB

    SANCHEZ, (STEELE)
    TAA, SHAW, LIVRAMENTO, (AMARTEY, AYLING)
    SALAH, SON, JOTA, GREENWOOD, (GILMOUR)
    DCL, ANTONIO, INGS

    any suggestions appreciated

Son and Ings for CR7 and a 5.5 mid of your choosing

that was where i ended up (ronaldo + traore)...just wondered if it was worth getting rid on SON for a hit against palace - or removing Salah to upgrade elsewhere

How many more points will Ronaldo get you, as a forward, over Salah?

Not saying don't get Ronaldo, just think well before selling Salah for him. There'll be a lot of skewed teams and wildcards used after 3 gameweeks of 38 to get one player, when a few hits can do the job. More likely to be prudent using hits than a wildcard thinking you've won the lottery. Ronaldo is majestic. Even when he scored two against us on Wednesday I couldn't help saluting the man. Different gravy.

      Ings > Pukki/Jimenez

      Amartey > Wolves def.

Alternatively, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he hurts you, I’d downgrade Son > Trincao/Sarr and upgrade Ings > Ronaldo

Is it viable to go Lukaku over CR7 on the wildcard? Given how Chelsea were before the red card vs liverpool, it looked like they were creating chances and i feel Spurs and City wont be immune to conceding chances to Chelsea either.

      certainly.

Totally viable, I think Luk. is fairly fixture proof.

Lukaku will score big against Villa I reckon.

If on WC this GW, I thinkt the CR7(c)-Luk(c) hokey-cokey until GW7 could work :
      GW4: Luk
      GW5-6: Ronaldo
      GW7+ : Luk

By GW7 we should have a better picture of how essential CR7 will be, prompting another way squeeze in Lukaku

    A) Semedo - Trincao - DCL
    B) R James - Gray - Bamford (aware james out this week)
    C) Coady- Raph - Bamford

    Cheers

I'm thinking Grealish > Sterling -4. Have funds.
Gut feeling he's gonna smash it next g/w.

I took out Sterling to get Torres on the day he went up and Sterling went down. Protected my tv but not entirely happy to have lost him.

So -4 to get him back over G. if no other issues.
