Who are the best Wolves attackers in FPL ahead of the Gameweek 4 fixture swing?

Wolverhampton Wanderers have one of the best runs of fixtures in the division from Gameweek 4 onwards, stretching right the way through to Gameweek 14.

For Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who prioritise fixtures over form, and especially for those on a Wildcard, Wolves’ defensive and attacking options are seriously worth considering.

Above: Wolves sit top of our Season Ticker over the next 11 Gameweeks

A manager losing their first three league matches in charge of a club is usually a cause for alarm but it doesn’t tell the full story here, as Bruno Lage has weirdly generated much optimism about his Wolves side after some well-rounded displays.

Offensively, Wolves boast the third-highest expected goals (xG) from open play tally (4.39), ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool.

At the back, they have the second-lowest xG from open play conceded (1.3) total despite having played against Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

Tight at the back

Since Gameweek 1, Lage has largely set up in a back three system which allows Wolves to create superiority in defensive numbers out wide.

Not only in their own defensive third, Wolves were also compact higher up the pitch, not allowing any United players to be left unmarked. Over the last three Gameweeks, Wolves have conceded only 33 crosses from the flanks (the second-lowest in the league).

As Harvey Barnes (£6.8m) also found out in Gameweek 1, Wolves’ defensive solidity prevented the likes of Jadon Sancho (£9.2m) and Luke Shaw (£5.5m) from building any kind of momentum from the left flank.

Based on his heatmap, Sancho largely spent his time closer to the halfway line rather than the byline which suggests how successful Wolves were in keeping him quiet, limiting him to zero attempts on goal in the process.

Above: Jadon Sancho’s heatmap in Gameweek 3, from the Premium Members Area

The usually creative Shaw also failed to make meaningful offensive contributions, creating zero chances from open play.

Such a disruption in United’s overall build-up play ultimately resulted in Bruno Fernandes (£12.1m) having only one shot inside the box whilst also creating only one chance – a significant drop-off in creative output for someone as influential as him.

With Ruben Neves (£5.5m) and Joao Moutinho (£5.0m) as the midfield shields, defending from the front has also been a recurrent theme in the early days of Lage’s tenure. Such a playing style allows Wolves to create a considerable amount of offensive turnovers in the opposition half which often leads to Wolves getting the ball quickly to Adama Traore (£6.0m), who can then launch a one-man counter.

However, despite this defensive toughness, they seemed to be letting in awkward goals that come out of nowhere. So far, they have been undone by a finish of the highest calibre from Jamie Vardy (£10.5m), a Dele Alli (£6.5m) penalty and a Mason Greenwood (£7.7m) goal from tight angle with an xG of 0.04, which suggests Wolves have been somewhat unlucky from a defensive standpoint.

If you are looking to invest in Wolves’ defensive options, Nelson Semedo (£4.9m) can be an excellent option as he’s able to potentially offer clean sheets as well as attacking returns, which we will touch upon shortly. Otherwise, Marcal or Conor Coady (both £4.5m) offer a slightly cheaper route to Wolves defence.

Strong attack

Moving onto the attack, Wolves also offer some of the best budget options in the game. The way they tend to overload up front in a 2-3-5 shape, with both full-backs pushed high up the pitch, makes Semedo an especially attractive defensive option.

    Sanchez (Steele)
    James - Shaw - Semedo (Amartey - Willams)
    Salah - Gray - Torres - Raph (Bissouma)
    CR7 - Lukaku - Antonio

    I can't see beyond that front 3 for now - Lukaku will be cap most gw's coming, up, CR7 will score loads, Antonio amazing value - which means impossible to get Trent in.

    Cheers!

        I'm not sure to WC or not really. Made a FT pre-cr7 news, and will need a -8 to do cr7 to ings and bruno to mid (Torres), so I'm thinking may as well WC anyway.

    Bruno really such a bad option with Ronaldo joining? Yes he'll lose pens and some direct free kicks, but I still think it's worth holding for now, can still see Bruno getting goals and many assists.

    Also why the love for Salah captain over Bruno this week?

      Think he’ll still be a good option, just not many can fit both him and Ronaldo in their sides. People say he won’t be good because he doesn’t get all that many G/A’s for Portugal alongside Ronaldo but it’s not really a fair comparison imo

          It’s not about comparing Bruno’s form for Portugal vs Bruno’s form for Utd though, it’s about Bruno when he plays with Ronaldo (for Portugal) vs the role Bruno has played for Utd. Quite simply, he has been the main man for Utd. He has dominated the shot count and all the set pieces. This is not going to continue with Ronaldo there. As with Portugal, Bruno will not have set pieces etc and will be looking to pass to Ronaldo when he can rather than be on the end of chances. Sure, he will still get decent returns, but he’s priced at 12.0 based on being the centre of all Utd attacks. That is no longer the case

        It's not just about losing set-pieces.

        One of the keys to Bruno's returns is that he takes by far the greatest proportion of his team's shots at goal. Unfortunately for him, the same applies to Ronaldo to an even greater extent and Ronaldo will be the focal point of United's attack.

        In other words Ronaldo's M.O. partly involves cannibalising his teammates' shooting opportunities and that will impact Bruno more than anyone else.

        1. tuvok
          • 5 Years

          This. Also, I do think there’s value in looking at how Bruno defers to Ronaldo in the national team. Bruno has more freedom to impress himself on games at Utd where the side plays to his strengths, and this will change now. I don’t want to overstate this (obv Ronaldo will deliver goals and bruno will deliver assists) but I do think there’s a chance restructuring the side to suit Ronaldo will have a detrimental effect on Utd’s output as a whole. It happened at Juve

      A) Bruno + Obafemi —> Ronaldo + 4.5 mid
      B) Option A + Mahrez —> Torres (-4)
      C) Option B + Toney —-> DCL (-8)

      Any other suggestions?

      Was messing around wildcard I still think Lukaku is too juicy of a fixture to leave out v villa. The guy is in form of his life against a team with a depleted defence.
      Had to laugh at talksport debating current best PL no9 saying Ronaldo or Kane completely forgetting Lukaku!

      So Lukaku-Antonio-Ronaldo front line for me.
      Was going to get a Leeds midfilder gw5 but all Greenwood's/Jota's fixtures look nice gw5 hard to call and both could start. So saving the transfer is a possible.
      Then Ronaldo out for Bamford and may be a -4 for double Chelsea defence.

        I can see why you related this to fpl and I'm personally very interested in decision making processes.

        I think there's a fair amount of 'after the event' talk of course, because plenty of people who think like that could easily be unsuccessful or unlucky too. Anyway, the takeaway here is too avoid the noise and try and concentrate on making the game simple.

            On paper Lukaku's game might be better. Risk there is though that usually I have heard that those who get a chance to start finally have to prove they might be ready to start more. So actually so called worse team due to absenties might suprise you in a good way. 🙂

      Up to GW7 would you rather

      A) DCL Greenwood Jota

      B) Lukaku Raphina Gray

      That shows the difference between fitting in a third premium, or stick with Ronaldo and Salah. (Both teams 343 with Sarr the other midfielder)

          A little... mainly just because I asked this question a week or so ago & got a few replies along the lines of "not nailed", "thiago silva 1st choice". But my opinion - based on performances & thiago turning 37 this month - is that christensen takes precedence now. Im going with TAA James & Christensen as my back 3 on WC.

            He was on thin ice as the season finished up I think - steadily regressing back to the old Stones we'd all came to know & love over the final couple of months - I’d say the pressure from Laporte in training was finally starting to tell

            He was bad in the 2-0 defeat to Man Utd at the Etihad & Pep dropped him for the next game vs southampton...

            Then came back with a with a goal & cleansheet vs fulham... but that was fulham... Pep benched him next game again away at Leciester (I think he was worried about Vardy & Nacho's guile against Stones) - where Dias & Laporte were very solid & kept a cleansheet in a massive 2-0 win (utd were breathing down their necks at that stage)

            Pep brought him back for what was perceived as a "Lower risk" home game to a tired-looking Leeds - and Stones was shambolic alongside Ake, City getting beat 2-1 to 10 men... he was all over the place again for Villa's early goal in the next game, before that horror-challenge & deserved red card just before half time (what on earth was he doing that far out??), which left him suspended for the next couple of league games (so Laporte came in for the league games and would have been stretched to play in the 2x Dortmund games midweek), benched again for newcastle, then recalled for Brighton game, where City again were all over the place at the back again & were beaten 3-2

            He was also caught in possesion early on in the CL final resulting in Werner's early big chance (but it was Werner so didn't result in a goal)... and was again positionally suspect for Chelsea's goal

            He'll obviously get games, but I think he's fluffed his chance to nail down a slot with those brain farts in the final third of the season - and Laporte is in pole position at the minute

              Txs, very insightful. Guess it's no reason to jump on straight away , will have a look at Laporte. Dias just £0.5 too expensive for me compared to Laporte, or say R.James, Rüdiger, Shaw or Reguilon

        If you go with Lukaku then stick with him. Don't jump on to Ronaldo the next week just because he scored in what was predictably the best fixture he'll have for quite a few weeks.

          West Ham despite being red on the FDR is actually a pretty good fixture for attackers. They're in the bottom half for xGC despite having played only Newcastle, Leicester (against 10 men for half the game), and Palace. Then Villa at home is good too for Ronaldo.

      In a bit of a pickle here.

      Sanchez - (Foster)
      TAA - Shaw - White - (Tsimikas) - (Livramento)
      Salah - Fernandes - Son - Buendia - Sarr
      Antonio - Toney - (Scarlett)

      0.5 ITB & 2 Free Transfers

      - I feel like my defence is on a knife edge (in terms of only 2 possibly playing)
      - Buendia now has hard fixtures (and isn't playing the next game due to isolating, he's also gone down to 6.4)

      My plan was always to wildcard GW 7/8, so don't really want to use it this GW.

      There's a few players I've had my eyes on,
      - DCL
      - Ronaldo
      - Traore
      - Raphinha

      I plan on holding Son for the palace game & replacing him next week.

      The question is, what transfers would you do? (Baring in mind that I have 2 FT)

      Thanks in advance.

          I was thinking:

          Fernandes -> Traore
          Buendia -> 4.5
          Scarlett -> Ronaldo

          for a -4

          next week,

          Son -> Raphinha
          Toney -> DCL

          for a -4

          Surely it's better to take a -8 and have these players for the next few weeks, then WC in GW 7/8?
