Who are the best Wolves attackers in FPL ahead of the Gameweek 4 fixture swing?

Wolverhampton Wanderers have one of the best runs of fixtures in the division from Gameweek 4 onwards, stretching right the way through to Gameweek 14.

For Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who prioritise fixtures over form, and especially for those on a Wildcard, Wolves’ defensive and attacking options are seriously worth considering.

Above: Wolves sit top of our Season Ticker over the next 11 Gameweeks

A manager losing their first three league matches in charge of a club is usually a cause for alarm but it doesn’t tell the full story here, as Bruno Lage has weirdly generated much optimism about his Wolves side after some well-rounded displays.

Offensively, Wolves boast the third-highest expected goals (xG) from open play tally (4.39), ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool.

At the back, they have the second-lowest xG from open play conceded (1.3) total despite having played against Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

Tight at the back

Since Gameweek 1, Lage has largely set up in a back three system which allows Wolves to create superiority in defensive numbers out wide.

Not only in their own defensive third, Wolves were also compact higher up the pitch, not allowing any United players to be left unmarked. Over the last three Gameweeks, Wolves have conceded only 33 crosses from the flanks (the second-lowest in the league).

As Harvey Barnes (£6.8m) also found out in Gameweek 1, Wolves’ defensive solidity prevented the likes of Jadon Sancho (£9.2m) and Luke Shaw (£5.5m) from building any kind of momentum from the left flank.

Based on his heatmap, Sancho largely spent his time closer to the halfway line rather than the byline which suggests how successful Wolves were in keeping him quiet, limiting him to zero attempts on goal in the process.

Above: Jadon Sancho’s heatmap in Gameweek 3, from the Premium Members Area

The usually creative Shaw also failed to make meaningful offensive contributions, creating zero chances from open play.

Such a disruption in United’s overall build-up play ultimately resulted in Bruno Fernandes (£12.1m) having only one shot inside the box whilst also creating only one chance – a significant drop-off in creative output for someone as influential as him.

With Ruben Neves (£5.5m) and Joao Moutinho (£5.0m) as the midfield shields, defending from the front has also been a recurrent theme in the early days of Lage’s tenure. Such a playing style allows Wolves to create a considerable amount of offensive turnovers in the opposition half which often leads to Wolves getting the ball quickly to Adama Traore (£6.0m), who can then launch a one-man counter.

However, despite this defensive toughness, they seemed to be letting in awkward goals that come out of nowhere. So far, they have been undone by a finish of the highest calibre from Jamie Vardy (£10.5m), a Dele Alli (£6.5m) penalty and a Mason Greenwood (£7.7m) goal from tight angle with an xG of 0.04, which suggests Wolves have been somewhat unlucky from a defensive standpoint.

If you are looking to invest in Wolves’ defensive options, Nelson Semedo (£4.9m) can be an excellent option as he’s able to potentially offer clean sheets as well as attacking returns, which we will touch upon shortly. Otherwise, Marcal or Conor Coady (both £4.5m) offer a slightly cheaper route to Wolves defence.

Strong attack

Moving onto the attack, Wolves also offer some of the best budget options in the game. The way they tend to overload up front in a 2-3-5 shape, with both full-backs pushed high up the pitch, makes Semedo an especially attractive defensive option.

Last week I decided to take out Omobimadele instead of Tsimikas because he was supposed to drop first, what’s happened since

    1- Tsimi is dropping first
    2- went coufal over reguilon
3- blocked myself from getting jota this week

Arguably one of the worst transfers I’ve ever made playing this game. Horrendous. Rant over

As someone without Ronaldo and Lukaku, I'm a bit terrified of GW4. Bu the more I think of it, Salah and Bruno as a pair could easily haul the same if not more points. Both have outstanding fixtures, and there's still a chance Ronnie starts on the bench. With that being said, who do you captain?

    A) Salah (lee)

    B) Bruno (NEW)

Entirely my opinion as well, FWIW. Sit tight a lot could happen in the next 7 days. The more information you have the better. I decided that even if I decide to play my WC, I was not going to chase the few price rises that normally occur during an IB.
There is still the possibility of covid, isolation and bans from UEFA, not to mention injuries. I will make my decisions after the pressers next week. If others get a jump ahead of me, then I've only got myself to blame. Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Some pros and cons with both players.

Jota has more potential but is a rotation risk with Firmino.
Pogba is more nailed but is not as attacking as Jota but Ronaldo could help him a lot on the assist front.

I would probably chose Jota because his fixtures are nicer in the short to medium term.

Anything can happen, of course, but the paranoia on here about a Ronaldo benching seems vastly overdone.
He's fit and back (early) from international duty. (I haven't heard comparable fretting about Bruno's security to start, and he has two more matches and a flight back from the Caspian before next Saturday.)
CR7 will be hungry to put on a display for the home crowd and jumpstart a boot chase that he's trailing presently. Why shouldn't he start?
The only excuse left is that Ole might want to create some hallmark moment by introducing him as a sub. As if the fans can't sufficiently applaud the man before the match starts?
Guess it's possible, but not super-convincing.

Think he is more nailed in the team and has a decent history as a box to box goal scoring midfielder when he was at Watford which I think is the role Rafa wants him to perform.

Gray has always been fairly inconsistent and wing type players tend to be rotated around a lot more

So, my two options are a -8 now or wildcard.

If I do the -8 now, and then change my mind later and decide to wildcard, I just trigger it and the -8 vanishes.

    Correct?

During the IB, when some players are playing for their countries, does normal club training still take place?

    1. Fulchester's New Centr…

Basically yes, but usually they get a couple of days off
Sometimes players left behind have friendlies eg Utd played Stoke the other day

        Good to know

Based on that, with Ronaldo possibly finishing his international duties early, is there a chance he arrives to the UK earlier; get's his quarantine done and trains with the squad prior to the Newc game? There are obviously quite a few important MU players out on intl duty, so I'd question the value, if even possible.

I think he might start now he is not going to Baku.
Suspect OGS tactics will be "just get it to Ronnie" so not much for him to learn.

I'll add. *I'm also unsure of his quarantine status (I'm not residing in UK). This is coming from unconfirmed sources is the UK. Has he been jabbed, etc. I don't know the current rules.

Have read an article saying ronaldo had to quarantine but then should hsve 3 training sessions before Newcastle but just couldn’t find anything about Bruno so assume he doesn’t

From what I understand, there are different rules for people who reside in UK & have been jabbed in UK. From that, I'm understanding Bruno doesn't need to quarantine, but Ronaldo does.

I'm no expert on this at all. I'm taking it from different sources, with rules subject to change fairly rapidly. I'm sure someone in the UK could advise better.

      Good question

If, for example, a first team player doesn't get minutes on the Saturday then they'll a) do some running post match and b) likely come in for training on Sunday, depending on the individual's programme (I think)

Like the look of this 442:

    4.9 GK 4

    TAA - Rudiger - Christensen - Shaw

    Salah - Jota - Greenwood - Benny

    Ronaldo - Antonio

    Allan - Duffy/Velt/Liv - Street

    3 x Utd, 3 x Pool, 2 x Chelsea with R to L

But no City and like the look of Dias/Cancelo/Torres

Cheers. Yeah, I think bulking up on defence will pay dividends, particularly with what City and Chelsea offer (albeit with rotation). I seldom do well at this game just relying on premium attacking points

Easy access to Raph/Torres via Benny

        Antonio can become DCL

        Cancelo/Dias/James all within reach
