Frisking the Fixtures

Who has the best FPL fixtures in the next six Gameweeks and beyond?

Our frisk of the fixtures sees us assess the Premier League clubs and players with the strongest runs of league matches over the coming weeks – in theory, at least.

The primary focus in this article will be on a six-Gameweek lookahead but we will scrutinise the longer-term prospects where appropriate.

Our colour-coded Season Ticker is the primary source for this piece; using this tool as a Premium Member, you can sort by difficulty, rank by attacking and defensive potential or find budget rotation pairings. You can also set your own difficulty ratings, should you disagree with our own.

BEST FIXTURES

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS

Five-time top 1k FPL finisher Tom Freeman on Calvert-Lewin, Wolves and his Gameweek 2 plans 3

Next six: wat | BRE | sou | NEW | avl | lee

The audition by Wolverhampton Wanderers assets in the first three Gameweeks doesn’t look too promising on paper, with a hat-trick of defeats and zero goals scored.

But the performances have been very encouraging in spells, with only Liverpool and Manchester City registering more shots on goal than Wolves in the opening three rounds.

At the other end of the pitch, it’s only City who have allowed fewer attempts on their own goal.

And Wolves’ fixtures are about to get very good indeed, with Bruno Lage’s troops sitting top of our Season Ticker from now until the end of November.

In fact, they don’t meet a single member of the ‘big six’ (if that is such a thing anymore) from Gameweeks 4-14.

Encounters with all three promoted clubs and seven of the teams who finished between ninth and 17th in the top flight last season fall within this run, including matches against teams with ropey-looking defences in the form of Watford, Southampton, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Leeds – who have one clean sheet combined – between now and Gameweek 9.

LEEDS UNITED

  • Next six: LIV | new | WHU | WAT | sou | WOL

With influential midfielder Kalvin Phillips (£5.0m) back to full match-sharpness, Raphinha (£6.5m) bursting into life in Gameweek 2 and dominant centre-half Diego Llorente (£4.5m) available again, now could be a good time to think about Leeds assets – if you weren’t already.

Not only that but they sit first on our Season Ticker over the next seven Gameweeks, with the upcoming home fixture against Liverpool the only blob of red in sight.

Newcastle, West Ham and Southampton’s defensive form deserted them in the second half of last season and continues to do so in 2021/22: they have kept fewer Premier League clean sheets from Gameweek 20 onwards than any other current top-flight sides.

And Watford have shipped five goals in the opening two Gameweeks, on top of the 10 they conceded to Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Brentford in pre-season.

While Patrick Bamford (£7.9m), an array of budget defenders and the set-piece taking Raphinha are obvious targets, it’s worth noting that Jack Harrison (£5.9m) delivered more attacking returns against Leeds’ Gameweek 4-9 opponents last season (eight) than any of his teammates.

ARSENAL

Next six: NOR | bur | TOT | bha | CRY | AVL

“FPL is not about what has happened but rather anticipating what will happen in the future.” So said three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser in his latest Pro Pundits piece for the site.

What has happened to Arsenal in the first month of the season is well documented but what will happen with the Gunners upon their imminent fixture swing is the burning question.

Mikel Arteta’s side sit rock-bottom of the Premier League table, goalless and having shipped nine goals in their opening three matches of 2021/22.

They are also top of our Season Ticker over the next eight Gameweeks, with a favourable run of matches starting in Gameweek 4.

There’s been precious little to encourage FPL investment so far but there are mitigating circumstances: the Gunners have arguably just faced two of the best sides in the division, have had their start to the campaign blighted by a coronavirus outbreak, have yet to see arguably their best two centre-halves – Ben White (£4.4m) and Gabriel (£5.0m) – playing in tandem and have been missing Thomas Partey (£5.0m) in the last few weeks.

The opening-day Brentford defeat was miserable but it’s worth remembering that they recorded more shots than any other side in Gameweek 1, with the absence of their three first-choice strikers a contributing factor in their failure to put away any of those chances.

Arteta’s troops were also among the form sides of 2021 before the start of this season; it’s unwise to disregard them completely over the next eight Gameweeks and the battering of West Brom reserves in the EFL Cup did illustrate their potential against the lesser lights.

EVERTON

Next six: BUR | avl | NOR | mun | WHU | WAT

Everton enjoyed favourable fixtures in August and their appealing run continues over the next seven Gameweeks.

Five of their next seven opponents either finished ninth or below in the Premier League last season or came up from the Championship.

Few clubs have better medium-term runs on home turf, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) and co facing Burnley, Norwich City, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers in their next four matches at Goodison Park.

None of those clubs have kept a clean sheet yet.

Carlo Ancelotti’s erstwhile troops were in awful form on Merseyside in 2020/21 but the return of supporters to Goodison Park, the positive start under Rafael Benitez and the fixture calendar will give them an excellent chance of remedying that.

With the obvious exception of newly promoted Norwich and Watford, Calvert-Lewin hit seven attacking returns in nine appearances against his Gameweek 4-10 opponents in 2020/21.

ALSO CONSIDER

Sarr underlines differential potential as Chelsea earn another clean sheet 3

Watford (WOL | nor | NEW | lee | LIV | eve) ride high on our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 4-10 but it’s fair to say that their next three fixtures are a darn sight more appealing than the subsequent triple-header.

A clean sheet-less Norwich and Newcastle have shipped a combined 18 goals over the first three Gameweeks, for those eyeing up a move for Ismaila Sarr (£6.0m) or Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m).

In fact, Gameweeks 4 and 7 opponents Wolves and Leeds United have also yet to record a shut-out this season.

At the other end, the recent return of the Hornets’ best centre-half, Francisco Sierralta (£4.4m), and significant upgrades in central midfield will boost Daniel Bachmann‘s (£4.5m) FPL potential – although with upcoming opponents Wolves, Liverpool and Everton among the top six sides for shots in the box attempted, save points may be more forthcoming than clean sheets.

FPL Gameweek 2 round-up: Sunday goals, assists, bonus and injuries

Gameweek 7 is widely being viewed as the time to pounce on Chelsea (AVL | tot | MCI | SOU | bre | NOR) assets but ignore Thomas Tuchel’s troops before then at your peril.

Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) is in ‘captain’ territory in Gameweek 4, with an Aston Villa side who are missing Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m) and who have already conceded four goals to two newly promoted sides set to visit Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have also won all three of their games against Gameweek 6 opponents Manchester City since Tuchel’s appointment and defeated Spurs 1-0 in their corresponding Gameweek 5 fixture last season.

Wilson fit again as Norwich's Covid-affected pre-season bodes well for Liverpool

In a similar boat to Arsenal but without the top-level pedigree to suggest their 100% losing record is a mere blip, Norwich City (ars | WAT | eve | bur | BHA | che) have the fixtures but not the form from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Their run over the next 11 Gameweeks is perhaps as appealing as that of Wolves, with only Chelsea of last season’s top seven to face in that time.

Among the Canaries’ ranks is the latest addition to the starting budget FPL defender pool, Brandon Williams (£4.0m).

I’ve noticed that Jota, Benrahma and Raphinha can all be benched in rotation fairly successfully up until GW10 at least. I think I’m going to break the mould and get a power front 8 on my WC.

Nice. I have done that plenty over the years. Good tactic. People have a cognitive bias about having points on their bench

Agreed. Me included until now! It will also help with Pep roulette if Torres is benched and doesn’t play (rather than having a 4.5m come in). Mind you, this approach means a lightweight defence, without Trent.

Looks good on paper, but you never know who they are scoring against, so could end up as lots of points on the bench.
-Raphinha scored against top 6 clubs last year
      - you're booking it till GW10, we're not even sure if Jota starts till then.

Points on your bench are better than not in your squad at all. Everyone is happy to own these guys for good fixture runs and sell for bad fixture runs. No problem getting some hauls and not others there. But benched points is bad for some reason. Non sensical

What I meant was , choosing the wrong 2 guys.
            You bench Raphinha, play Jota.
            Jota 1 points, Raphinha 10.

            This is definitely an issue.

If my starting 11 all score and then Raphinha on the bench has 10 points, I don't care.

But having to make the choice every week could go wrong a lot of times. Whereas if you stick with one of Raphinha or Jota, you'll definitely get all the hauls they get

I don't mind having points on the bench. It's money on the bench I don't like.

With all the premiums in the game, money not on the field puts you at a disadvantage imo.

Just to clarify as an example: I'm not upset if Ayling scores 12 points on the bench if I didn't intend to play him.

But benching Raphinha means my team has 3m less on the field vs a 4.5m fodder mid team and I think over multiple weeks, that extra team value will work against you.

        1. Get up ya bum
          • 14 Years

It depends. I used to play a side game with only players under 9m. Benches were stacked obviously. 15 quality players. It gave so much flexibility to maximize fixtures and form. Captaincy was tough but even in spite of that most of us did very well.
Middle ground would be choose just one expensive player as captain for blocks of fixtures. Rest of squads spread the cash and use a full squad without useless fillers. There's much better points per million to be had with the big hitters.

Fair. I'd be interested to try that sometime. Maybe you go just Salah and then have all 8.0m and under players.

You could build a really strong 15 like:

            Sanchez Bachmann
            TAA James Shaw Coufal Coady
            Salah Torres Raphinha ESR Jota
            DCL Antonio Bamford

You rotate the mids based on fixtures/form, same with the last defender slot. I think a team like this would absolutely be competitive. You will have to be brave with captaincy the times you don't want to cap Salah but I think it could be great. Antonio is practically a premium nowadays in terms of reliability.

Looks really good. Just a couple of questions I have been contemplating as well.

Jiminez over DCL - is that because of cash issues or your preference is Jiminez?

Thoughts on Benrahama? Everyone seemed to get him in GW3 but don't see him in a lot of WC teams.

      1. Dr. Rog
        • 14 Years

Jiminez has the long term fixtures, and yes 0.7m is a big difference in terms of price.
I dont know if there is a huge difference between them - DCL has scored 2 pens so far, which skew his numbers a bit.

Benrahma - time to get off the train imo. 26pts and 0.2 banked from 3 is a great return, but now they have sou MUN lee BRE eve TOT avl LIV wol mci + europa, which is not exactly the kindest run. At the same time Raphs fixtures are coming to the fore (as are Traore/Sarr). Antonio is enough.

I think West Ham could still score in their next 5, especially as man Utd only really has Fred as a DM (which may be enough)?

I can't see them going gung ho in Europe to begin with, but if they do (Antonio will break) then yes you are right. Another wait and see

Why though? The only difference I have essentially is Jota vs Robbo? Then it becomes 3-4-3 with Trent and Shaw? That's not too much spent in defense right?

    2. RogDog_jimmy
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 7 months ago

I think I’d drop Robbo to a 4.5 and up one of the mids to a 7.0.
Could give you the option of 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 and leaves the option for Jota later on without tearing up the team.

Also Robbo hasn’t done anything yet…

Alternately go Robbo > Chelsea/City defender.

(I don’t like Robbo for his price if that’s not clear).

      • 8 Years

Robbo VS Jota is Robbo for me regardless of Firmino news.
Robbo gives a route to double Chelsea defence in GW7. Jota is a rotation risk and also there aren't many mids who i could switch to in GW7 that can outscore a Chilwell/Rudiger in GW7.

    4. Boywiththesoupdragontattoo
      • 6 Years
      2 years, 7 months ago

I’ve got something very close to that but with Shaw as a 5.0 defender and Digne is a 6m mid.

It’s partly because I think that one of Coufal/Tierney/Semedo/Mings and one of Sarr/Gray/Traore/Gallagher (based on fixture runs) will score at least the same amount of points. It’s partly because I know how hard I find it to stick with four at the back if a defenders blank for a couple of weeks.

Come GW7 the Ronaldo to Lukaku move let’s you move the 5.0m up to a Chelsea defender also if one of the 5.5s is a place holder for James/Rudiger.

a lot of the 8s can and probably will. its the captaincy premium.

WC this lot, with 2FT's? My gut is saying no but don't like White (after Covid) or Coufal with West Ham at the back / Europe, but maybe Zouma may help.

Or just Bruno, Ings, to Ronaldo, 8.0 Midfielder (or less depends on team news, Firminho, Torres, Grealish, Greenwood) etc

    Sanchez/Foster
    TAA, Shaw, Coufal, (White Tsi)
    Raphinha, Salah, Bruno, Greenwood, Benrahma,
    Ings, Antonio, Scarlett

Would love DCL but cant have them all and currently playing 3- 2 until WC.

Makes no sense to WC for me.

West Ham not started Europe yet and Coufal for sure is nailed. And yes extra defensive depth will help. Regardless the fixtures are amazing.

White - ditto on fixtures and if you get rid now you lose value, he’s an awesome first bench.

There is literally no one else of concern on your team so you can do what you want with Ings.
If you do Bruno move just get in Torres and use the change to upgrade either Coufal or White if they become an issue (I don’t think they will).

Well I guess they wanted to find a baseline before moving him around. Other big hitters are 40-50% with no price rise.

Makes complete sense to me that Lukaku and Ronaldo have a chance to equalize before moving their price around.

It’s about keeping the game for the masses - not the quickest 5% getting an advantage.

Well depends who you believe - the crackpot Brazilian government or Comnebol.

People from the UK are supposed to isolate coming into Brazil. But allegedly Comnebol has an agreement with nations to skip this.
But Brazilian authorities either disagree or decided to pull a fast one - presumably to gain an advantage.

Then Comnebol threatened is Brazil didn’t allow them to play that they would forfeit. Do the game went ahead - until health officials halted the game.

Farcical, hilarious, potentially dangerous - very dramatic for sure.
