Frisking the Fixtures

Who has the best FPL fixtures in the next six Gameweeks and beyond?

Our frisk of the fixtures sees us assess the Premier League clubs and players with the strongest runs of league matches over the coming weeks – in theory, at least.

The primary focus in this article will be on a six-Gameweek lookahead but we will scrutinise the longer-term prospects where appropriate.

Our colour-coded Season Ticker is the primary source for this piece; using this tool as a Premium Member, you can sort by difficulty, rank by attacking and defensive potential or find budget rotation pairings. You can also set your own difficulty ratings, should you disagree with our own.

BEST FIXTURES

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS

Five-time top 1k FPL finisher Tom Freeman on Calvert-Lewin, Wolves and his Gameweek 2 plans 3

Next six: wat | BRE | sou | NEW | avl | lee

The audition by Wolverhampton Wanderers assets in the first three Gameweeks doesn’t look too promising on paper, with a hat-trick of defeats and zero goals scored.

But the performances have been very encouraging in spells, with only Liverpool and Manchester City registering more shots on goal than Wolves in the opening three rounds.

At the other end of the pitch, it’s only City who have allowed fewer attempts on their own goal.

And Wolves’ fixtures are about to get very good indeed, with Bruno Lage’s troops sitting top of our Season Ticker from now until the end of November.

In fact, they don’t meet a single member of the ‘big six’ (if that is such a thing anymore) from Gameweeks 4-14.

Encounters with all three promoted clubs and seven of the teams who finished between ninth and 17th in the top flight last season fall within this run, including matches against teams with ropey-looking defences in the form of Watford, Southampton, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Leeds – who have one clean sheet combined – between now and Gameweek 9.

LEEDS UNITED

  • Next six: LIV | new | WHU | WAT | sou | WOL

With influential midfielder Kalvin Phillips (£5.0m) back to full match-sharpness, Raphinha (£6.5m) bursting into life in Gameweek 2 and dominant centre-half Diego Llorente (£4.5m) available again, now could be a good time to think about Leeds assets – if you weren’t already.

Not only that but they sit first on our Season Ticker over the next seven Gameweeks, with the upcoming home fixture against Liverpool the only blob of red in sight.

Newcastle, West Ham and Southampton’s defensive form deserted them in the second half of last season and continues to do so in 2021/22: they have kept fewer Premier League clean sheets from Gameweek 20 onwards than any other current top-flight sides.

And Watford have shipped five goals in the opening two Gameweeks, on top of the 10 they conceded to Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Brentford in pre-season.

While Patrick Bamford (£7.9m), an array of budget defenders and the set-piece taking Raphinha are obvious targets, it’s worth noting that Jack Harrison (£5.9m) delivered more attacking returns against Leeds’ Gameweek 4-9 opponents last season (eight) than any of his teammates.

ARSENAL

Next six: NOR | bur | TOT | bha | CRY | AVL

“FPL is not about what has happened but rather anticipating what will happen in the future.” So said three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser in his latest Pro Pundits piece for the site.

What has happened to Arsenal in the first month of the season is well documented but what will happen with the Gunners upon their imminent fixture swing is the burning question.

Mikel Arteta’s side sit rock-bottom of the Premier League table, goalless and having shipped nine goals in their opening three matches of 2021/22.

They are also top of our Season Ticker over the next eight Gameweeks, with a favourable run of matches starting in Gameweek 4.

There’s been precious little to encourage FPL investment so far but there are mitigating circumstances: the Gunners have arguably just faced two of the best sides in the division, have had their start to the campaign blighted by a coronavirus outbreak, have yet to see arguably their best two centre-halves – Ben White (£4.4m) and Gabriel (£5.0m) – playing in tandem and have been missing Thomas Partey (£5.0m) in the last few weeks.

The opening-day Brentford defeat was miserable but it’s worth remembering that they recorded more shots than any other side in Gameweek 1, with the absence of their three first-choice strikers a contributing factor in their failure to put away any of those chances.

Arteta’s troops were also among the form sides of 2021 before the start of this season; it’s unwise to disregard them completely over the next eight Gameweeks and the battering of West Brom reserves in the EFL Cup did illustrate their potential against the lesser lights.

EVERTON

Next six: BUR | avl | NOR | mun | WHU | WAT

Everton enjoyed favourable fixtures in August and their appealing run continues over the next seven Gameweeks.

Five of their next seven opponents either finished ninth or below in the Premier League last season or came up from the Championship.

Few clubs have better medium-term runs on home turf, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) and co facing Burnley, Norwich City, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers in their next four matches at Goodison Park.

None of those clubs have kept a clean sheet yet.

Carlo Ancelotti’s erstwhile troops were in awful form on Merseyside in 2020/21 but the return of supporters to Goodison Park, the positive start under Rafael Benitez and the fixture calendar will give them an excellent chance of remedying that.

With the obvious exception of newly promoted Norwich and Watford, Calvert-Lewin hit seven attacking returns in nine appearances against his Gameweek 4-10 opponents in 2020/21.

ALSO CONSIDER

Sarr underlines differential potential as Chelsea earn another clean sheet 3

Watford (WOL | nor | NEW | lee | LIV | eve) ride high on our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 4-10 but it’s fair to say that their next three fixtures are a darn sight more appealing than the subsequent triple-header.

A clean sheet-less Norwich and Newcastle have shipped a combined 18 goals over the first three Gameweeks, for those eyeing up a move for Ismaila Sarr (£6.0m) or Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m).

In fact, Gameweeks 4 and 7 opponents Wolves and Leeds United have also yet to record a shut-out this season.

At the other end, the recent return of the Hornets’ best centre-half, Francisco Sierralta (£4.4m), and significant upgrades in central midfield will boost Daniel Bachmann‘s (£4.5m) FPL potential – although with upcoming opponents Wolves, Liverpool and Everton among the top six sides for shots in the box attempted, save points may be more forthcoming than clean sheets.

FPL Gameweek 2 round-up: Sunday goals, assists, bonus and injuries

Gameweek 7 is widely being viewed as the time to pounce on Chelsea (AVL | tot | MCI | SOU | bre | NOR) assets but ignore Thomas Tuchel’s troops before then at your peril.

Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) is in ‘captain’ territory in Gameweek 4, with an Aston Villa side who are missing Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m) and who have already conceded four goals to two newly promoted sides set to visit Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have also won all three of their games against Gameweek 6 opponents Manchester City since Tuchel’s appointment and defeated Spurs 1-0 in their corresponding Gameweek 5 fixture last season.

Wilson fit again as Norwich's Covid-affected pre-season bodes well for Liverpool

In a similar boat to Arsenal but without the top-level pedigree to suggest their 100% losing record is a mere blip, Norwich City (ars | WAT | eve | bur | BHA | che) have the fixtures but not the form from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Their run over the next 11 Gameweeks is perhaps as appealing as that of Wolves, with only Chelsea of last season’s top seven to face in that time.

Among the Canaries’ ranks is the latest addition to the starting budget FPL defender pool, Brandon Williams (£4.0m).

Obviously, you still have time to change, but DCL is a doubt still. Raphinia has competition now, so his minutes are more at risk. Could upgrade him a bit and downgrade DCL. Otherwise, it looks great.

Erm, because FPL’s whole premise is predicting what will happen in the future? Not waiting on what happens first and missing points.

That's weird because I finished in the top 200 last season by following the trends I was seeing on the pitch and the stats. We don't have either of those yet so better to wait to see what happens before selling Fernandes and in form strikers.

Selling in-form strikers? Getting rid of Ings/Toney for Ronaldo doesn't sound too bad to me

It's also pretty clear that Ronaldo will have an impact on Fernandes, most people seem to agree with that

Well no, not really, because FPL is all about predicting. Must of had a great start if finishing in the top 200, because you PREDICTED those players to do well.
You don’t climb rank by sitting there to see what happens first and then hopping on board. Ronaldo has arrived, Bruno’s points will diminish considerably, not rocket science.

Oh you are still here on this rank boast thread you made. Ok.
Nobody getting in Ronaldo is reacting to points. They are reacting to fixture changes, squad changes and what they have seen team ability wise in games (eg Ings out)

I read that whole thread. You got too much flack imo. 1,000,000 after a few weeks a good start? That's not a good start at all. A good start is top 10k, like starting with Kane and Son last year.

Ronaldo only did around 2,700 minutes each year in the Prem. I doubt he'll do anymore this time around, maybe even less, and certainly not as much sprinting, and zero pressing for sure.

I might fomo and get him anyway. Him and Greenwood seems like a good combo. Salah will be captain for me this week after his staycation.

So supercilious to write like that. Mark is a top manager and he's one of the good guys.

FPL is all about reading trends and predicting peaks and troughs before they happen. With CR7 that involves assessing his prospects using only indirect evidence seeing he didn't play for United in 12 years and is a very different player now.

His track record as a goalscorer is evidence of his potential. His record over the last 2 seasons both in terms of goals/assists and gametime gives an indication about how well his fitness and effectiveness is holding up at age 36. But there is also the question of how well he will fit in to the United team because either they will need to adapt to him or he to them (or both).

Mark's comments about crosses and service were an attempt to look at what might not be a perfect fit, so the assessment can be more balanced. That's no bad thing. It's also not clear whether Bruno will give up his 'main man' status at United without friction, or whether OGS is capable of giving his big players clear instructions and insisting they adjust accordingly, it suits his personality better to let them do as they like. Would OGS drop Bruno if he didn't adapt his game as required? Hard to imagine but Pep (for example) wouldn't think twice about doing that.

Anyway, on the one hand you have a top manager and good guy thinking things through with some care and being willing to back his judgement and on the other you have know-nothings taking cheap shots with the benefit of hindsight when something goes wrong. Which offers the better value, do you think?

Most people are selling the likes of Ings who has poor fixtures and whose team hasn't been playing well.

And you don't need to wait and see to know that Ronaldo impacts Fernandes negatively, it's pretty evident when you consider how they generate their points. The only question is whether Ronaldo starts.

What you are doing is common for the current Wolves and Arsenal situation where their players are still off form and it’s better to see what happens first.

The Ronaldo and Bruno situation is much more clear than the normal situation. Ronaldo will take Bruno’s penalty spot means reducing Bruno’s goal by 50%. Ronaldo vs Newcastle home, I can’t think anything better captain than that. You can wait if you want but I don’t how you have a question for the Ronaldo and Bruno situation.

Agreed. I’m sticking with Bruno for the Newcastle game. It’s one of those decisions that really could go either way. Ronaldo could start and bag a brace, or he could also come on in the 62nd minute for Cavani and Bruno scores a penalty and two assists. Nobody knows.

I have a similar team to yours and I suspect there are many others seeing these wildcard teams boasting Ronaldo, Lukaku, et al, thinking about playing a wildcard.

I personally would hold fire for now. You have all the mainstays and are covered with the likes of Bruno, Salah, etc.

You also hold players who have been in form and there are some now entering better fixtures e.g. White, DCL.

I would watch Ronaldo to begin with. He may get very limited gametime. No one knows. Those bringing him in now are gambling imo. I do worry Lukaku will score well v Villa and I have been thinking of something like:

Bruno and Ings -> Lukaku and Greenwood.

So no not for me. Keep the WC for another week possibly week 7 when CHS have better fixtures.

      Nope. No WC for me.

The only player I don’t really like is Alli - and he’s still playing ok enough.
Defense is as solid as it gets.
Forward line is awesome, Ings can return against anyone.

I’d stress less. BUT if you want to WC there’s no rules saying you shouldn’t.

No Antonio and the only way to get him without a hit is to trade him for DCL who I just brought in.
Most likely bring him in GW5 or GW7 WC.

    Team:
    Sanchez
    TAA | White | Shaw
    Salah | Bruno | Son | Raph | Benrahama
    DCL | Toney

    Gunn | Livramento | Hoever | Scarlet + 1FT 0.0ITB

    GW4 trade:
    a) Son + Toney to Jota + Jiminez
    b) Son + Toney to Antonio + Jota (Antonio vs Man United)
    c) Bruno + Toney to Jota + Jiminez, then GW5 Scarlett to Antonio
    d) WC now

ome advice would be extremely appreciated:

    (A)
    Sa (4.0)
Trent, Shaw, Reguilon, (Livramemto, Veltman or White)
    Salah, Jota, Torres, Raphinha, Benny
    Ronaldo, Antonio (4.5)

    (B)
    Sanchez (4.0)
Trent, Shaw, Coady or White (Livramemto, Williams)
    Salah, Jota, Torres, Greenwood, Benny
    Ronaldo, Antonio (4.5)

If I flip greenwood (who I am not sure will get the minutes and share of the points now) for Raphinha. I can strengthen the defense a tad.

Do any of these drafts look better than the other to you? or glaring mistakes?
Thanks and good luck for next weekend!

I like both and understand why both works.

Personally would probably prefer the stronger defense (with Coady as 4th defender) but I think you can make do with two 4.0s

No idea on the keeper choice though.

Sa is the Wolves keeper and they have a very good run of fixtures, it was either Sa and Reguilon or Sanchez and Semedo - I know the prices are a little more on the first.

No glaring mistakes but, and I'm struggling with this too, Torres, Jota and Greenwood are all uncertain to start. If they do, best 3 in that price range, but if they don't, I prefer Sarr, Gray and Raphina.

This is my thinking. I had Shaw and Ronny, so I will probably drop Greenwood as he was the one that might be most effected by the change and strengthen my defense.....and you are right, Torres and Jota are easy swaps for other solid players. Thanks for your feedback mate

I would keep Greenwood for now tbh. Reassess as and when needed. TAA, Shaw & a cheaper defender isn’t a big sacrifice to make for as long as Greenwood continues to play (which should continue at least until Rashford is back).

I like it, about as good as a 4-3-3 gets while including the big 3 attackers. I would prefer 3 defenders and 4 or 5 mids because of the value Greenwood/Jota/Torres/Son bring, but it’s a solid team for what you want to do.

First time in many years I have too many forwards that I want to own. How on earth can you choose between them? Very very confused. Fear of picking the wrong ones is the only reason im holding off the WC for now.

Antonio - 3 double digit hauls in 3 games. Very decent fixtures ahead too. If his hamstring hold up he is pretty much the only striker in west ham. Super high ownership make him hard to drop.

DCL - Pen taker, 3 in 3 with amazing fixtures ahead. Bar injury, he is just an amazing choice up front with a decent price.

CR7 - debut at home v Newcastle. West ham and Aston Villa next. Still one of the best 2 ever.

Jimenez- Very encouraging stats and amazing fixtures ahead. Pen taker as well. Would definitely bet for him scoring rather than the wasteful Traore.

Lukaku - very encouraging performances during the intl break. Being a chelsea fan, having him make the game even more fun. Very very unlikely to blank v villa and I wont bet against him scoring against Spurs and City either.

Not to mention Bamford, but I will probably pass for now.

I believe it. I might be too fooled by his bicycle kick goal. Other people have done one and followed up with nothing (guy on Brighton last season or season before). I will still hold Ings through GW 5 then decide. I'd rather have DCL but will not take hit, 1 FT atm.

Yes we know who should be taking them. Ronaldo pulls rank, hence why he takes them at Portugal. If you think Ole has the strength to stand up to him, think again. It was Ole who said before the signing that Ronaldo picks who he plays for, not the other way around.

On a not completely unassociated point, I couldn't help noticing Jorginho blew Italy's chance to win last night by missing a penalty. Implications for Lukaku at Chelsea??

Yeah I've been thinking about the Chelsea scenario too. Jorginho has been set at club but not country for penalties until now. He certainly does not have the rank pull of others discussed in this thread.. including Romelu. Will be interesting, I'm already set on Lukaku captaincy this week, penalties would be a bonus on top of that.

If Ronaldo wants Man U to win the PL then he has to let Bruno (the better man) take the penalties 🙂

So, Ronaldo on pens costs Utd, what, maybe a single goal over the season? Not a huge deal. The bigger concern is if he takes free kicks. That’s when ABU fans will start rubbing their hands together.

Ronaldo does want the golden boot. Not out of the realms of possibility

When one has taken 167 and the other 46 I'm not sure you get to just compare their failure rate like that

        It's just a bit of fun 🙂

But seriously, Bruno is a very good penalty taker and I know who I would want to take that game winning penalty for the win against City, Pool or Chelsea ... pandering to Ronaldo's ego shouldn't be a consideration but it is quite likely to be just that.

Either way, Ronaldo is pretty much essential for most games except where Lukaku, Kane or Salah are nailed on captain picks

    International football, eh?

Brazilian health officials march onto the pitch to escort off Martinez, Romero and Lo Celso (and Buendia on the bench) 5 minutes AFTER the game has kicked off! Match abandoned. Does this mean it will be replayed, at a neutral venue, with Raphinha etc called up?

Saiss, Moroccan captain, finds his match is also abandoned as a military coup is taking place while the team is trapped in the hotel.

Antonio's debut ends in a 0-3 defeat. Anyone got news of that? No injury or anything, right?

Wow, interesting stuff Andy! Does it say why the Brazil match was called off?

Unreal. Instead of getting on the phone, Health authorities drive out there and wait for the match to start to make as big a show as possible. Unreal

    My current team, with 2FTs:

    Sanchez, Foster
    TAA, Shaw, Digne, Livra, Manquillo
    Salah, Bruno, Raphinha, Greenwood, Bissouma
    Ings, Toney, Antonio

I have 2FTs, so does that makes it not quite worth wildcarding away from above?

Thinking maybe Bruno, Ings > Ronaldo, Torres.

Then Ron > Lukaku in gw7.
