Injuries

Fitness updates on Lukaku, Sancho and Laporte ahead of Gameweek 4

With various Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players nursing or recuperating from knocks during the international break, we’ve rounded up the latest news and quotes concerning the key players affected below.

ROMELU LUKAKU

Lukaku on target as Chelsea assets prosper at Arsenal

Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) is ‘struggling with a minor injury’ that will require a scan before he returns to Chelsea later this week.

The 28-year-old has featured twice for Belgium during the international break, but following his second-half yellow card in Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Czech Republic, is now suspended for the final match against Belarus.

“I’ll have a scan of my thigh first. I have been struggling with a minor issue for a while. And then I will return to Chelsea.” – Romelu Lukaku

Further updates are awaited.

JADON SANCHO

 1

Jadon Sancho (£9.2m) has pulled out of England duty because of a ‘minor knock’.

The 21-year-old was hurt in training last week, and as a result, sat out England’s wins over Hungary and Andorra.

However, despite the setback, a statement via England said that he was ‘expected to recover in time’ to play for the Red Devils against Newcastle United in Gameweek 4.

AYMERIC LAPORTE

Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) was forced off at half-time against Georgia on Sunday night with an adductor injury.

However, he has since been given the all clear by national team boss Luis Enrique, who said following the match:

“I think it’s nothing [adductor issue]. Slight discomfort/overload. I don’t even think he’ll need any tests.”

TYRONE MINGS AND JOHN MCGINN

Despite missing Aston Villa’s Gameweek 3 tie with Brentford with a cracked rib, Tyrone Mings (£5.0m) was named in England’s starting line-up for the World Cup qualifier against Andorra and completed 90 minutes.

Encouragingly for Dean Smith, John McGinn (£6.0m) also returned following a period of self-isolation to feature for Scotland.

KAI HAVERTZ

Captain Sensible – Gameweek 1 6

Germany boss Hansi Flick has handed Chelsea a fitness concern with Kai Havertz (£8.3m) having been struck down with ‘flu-like symptoms’ on international duty.

Talking in a press conference, he said:

“Kai Havertz has a mild flu-like infection, but it’s not that bad. We still have to see if he can train with us today.”

As a result, he did not even feature on the bench against Armenia, but could return in midweek.

SEAMUS COLEMAN

Republic of Ireland will be without Seamus Coleman (£5.0m) against Serbia on Tuesday due to the injury he picked up versus Azerbaijan.

A Football Association of Ireland statement said:

“Republic of Ireland captain Seamus Coleman will miss the FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifier against Serbia due to injury.

The Ireland skipper suffered an injury during the 1-1 draw against Azerbaijan and will miss the match at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday, September 7.”

Imagine wildcarding Lukaku and Ronaldo in for Lukaku to miss out and Ronaldo blank...

Makes me wonder if to sell Bruno for Ronaldo

Imagine not transfering the greatest goalscorer of all time in and then he scores a hattrick versus a shaky Newcastle defence. The 25% that did captained him and then you lost 10-15 points in that single gameweek (depending on how good your options do). That would probably lead to him raising in price as well, and now you either need to get him in versus a stronger defence, or get priced out

All rational thought has gone out the window, ronaldo is the G.O.A.T so if you don't have him it will hurt because everyone else will, even though the fixtures aren't great, it's ronaldo, he can even do it on a rainy Monday at stoke

West Ham that have conceded 5 in 3 games and have 1 clean sheet in the last 14 PL games. They're attacking well but hardly a team to be feared defensively.

Its strange, if he blanked against Arsenal, which would had been a third in a row, he’d be sold by the masses and no one would be interested, his price would have plummeted.

Talk about chasing last weeks points. He has Chelsea Liverpool and Leicester in next 4.

Not in short term, i guess. Keeping in mind the Champions League, i think Torres is likely to starts the next two matches

I was quoting pep a couple weeks ago. Spoke a lot about his rotation plans starting next match. After his Vardy comments about Torres he immediately brought up Foden, kdb, sterling, and Mahrez and how important they will be. He also Named his 6 different options to play striker or false 9 lol.

Torres can still be a fantastic pick. If he falls into the league game rotation cycle or if cements what he's showed already that he is simply their best striker.

    6. Wrong Captain Choice - Ag i…
      • 14 Years

I don't get the Torres hype fixtures not great. Always a pep rotation risk. Plenty of better FPL options. It was only Arsenal he did well against. Most teams will this season. Rashica/Pukki could get double digits v Arsenal the way they play.

      1. Harry the Hack
        • 14 Years
        2 years, 7 months ago

because he plays for Man City, the best scoring team in the league
because they don't have an out and out number 9
because he is available as a midfielder
because he is available for only 7.1

Yes there are absolutely risks, which is why Mark took him out last week. But its pretty easy to see why the 'Torres hype'

          • 14 Years
          2 years, 7 months ago

All true but he has only done well v a poor Arsenal side yet. Difficult fixtures up coming.

Plus not only that when KDB/Foden are back what happens? I am not buying the narrative that Torres has 'nailed down' the no9 role. Not so long ago I remember the chat was Mahrez was a starter because of absences. Then there was uproar when he was benched v Norwich.

    Advice appreciated!

    A) Lukaku, Torres, Gray/ESR, Ayling (Sissoko)
    B) DCL, Torres, Jota, Sarr/Traore (Ayling)
    C) DCL, Jota, Greenwood, ESR (Ayling)
    D) DCL, Jota, Greenwood, Sarr/Traore (Williams)

    Rest of Team:

    Sanchez
    TAA, Shaw, Coady
    Salah, X, X, X
    Ronaldo, Antonio, X

    (Foster, X, Allan, Livramento)

Torn between A as fancy going Ronaldo-Salah-Lukaku-TAA-Torres and rotating Ayling/Sissoko/Allan should be viable for a while due to fixtures. Versus a more sensible/balanced B/C/D.

2nd team is very close to mine. Some discussion of chilwell on last 2 pages of previous article might help you decide between chilly & mount. Like the strong 1st sub to cover chelsea rotation

    Sanchez Foster
    TAA Shaw White Tsimi Omo
    Salah Bruno Sarr Benrhama Barnes
    Antonio Ings Toney

Was going to do Ings > DCL and wait a couple of weeks before using WC. But seems like going without Ronaldo is a huge mistake according to most here. What should I do? Can I wait or should I take a hit and get him in this week?

Don't worry about what most here reckon. Do what makes you happy. But I'd take the hit if your planning to bring him in anyways. Newcastle look ripe and old Trafford will be wetting itself as soon as he steps on the pitch.

My plan was to bring in Lukaku actually but I can’t not have a Utd player against Newcastle and the only way I can get Lukaku without a WC is if I remove Bruno so feel like I’m forced into getting Ronaldo :/

Hey Pals, hows this WC team looking?
    Looking forward to CR7+Gray+Shaw ➡ Lukaku+Raphinha+James by GW7

    Pickford
    TAA - Semedo - Shaw
    Salah - Jota - Torres - Gray
    CR7 - Antonio - Jimenez

    Bench: Ayling/White - Duffy/Livra - Sissoko]
    ITB: 0

All suggestions with supporting logic are welcome. Thanks.

Tierney over Semedo. ESR over Gray imo.

The main problem with this team is the transfers look good but you are missing a freebie somewhere along the line.
If you are so inclined you can skim a further 1mln ish by using Williams and a 4.5 GK which gets you raph in 1 move for GW5.

Tierney is in my mind, definitely more attacking than Semedo. But not so sure on Arsenal's CS potential, as they are not settled yet as a unit (just wanna see one good defensive performance).. Wolves been defending quite well and those fixtures look too good (just like Arsenal's)..

I am even leaning towards going with both and playing 4-3-3 (as I feel both may outscore Gray) but then bringing in Raphinha will be difficult. So here your 2nd suggestion of saving 1m, has given me food for thought.

        Cheers.

No to Pickford. Coleman's out again (As are Mina / Godfrey). We're another injury away from defensive disaster. Kenny not up to scratch so will probably have to play one of the CBs at RB - Holgate moving wide leaves Keane + Branthwaite with Digne on left. We better score a few.

Torres is on borrowed time IMO. Jimi yet to prove himself this season - albeit had some good chances.

Thanks mate, appreciate your detailed reply! Noticed the Coleman news, but thought that it's a typical international duty injury to prevent from too much fatigue 😛 But if he's out then surely there are better options than Everton atm.

TBH he "could be fit"... but it's Coleman. He's old by prem terms and won't make 38 games so his time will be managed and so will the effectiveness of Pickford until we get a solid RB replacement.

Thoughts on this WC draft? (0,4m ITB)

    TAA Cancelo Tierney
    Salah Jota Raphinha Sarr
    Ronaldo Antonio Jimenez

    Ward, Livra, Williams, Allan

Omobamidele on -97.6% to drop and Lamptey on -97.4%, according to fplstats. A lot of wild cards being thrown, but you reckon they will drop before deadline based on this?

Will likely know Thursday \Friday - Mendy (Leicester) a 4.4 mid if you need the .1

Lanptey already dropped to 4.4, so would need a 4.3 defender. I keep toying with possible WC drafts, and seeing I need every 01 to get the team I want. E.g. Livramento , whom I'd get as 5th defender, looks likely to rise another 0.1 so that's effectively a 0.3m swing.

As. I said to another poster Robertson saves you .5 on TAA and is much of a muchness between the two. I have gone even cheaper and have Matip. Like you was hoping for a 3.9 def. But Livramento has nice fixtures fairly soon seems like the one to get on quick. Williams 4m nice fixtures but it is Norwich. He is likely to rise .1 as well.
Bench does not bother me for rest of season (have used BB) so I can just go cheap until next WC.

Think it'll be close come deadline, but I expect them to hold until Thursday at least. Quite a few between -96-100% drop due to wild cards

    Advice greatly appreciated!

    A) 3-4-3 - DCL, Jota, Greenwood, ESR (Ayling, Sissoko, Livramento)
    B) 3-4-3 - DCL, Jota, Greenwood, Sarr (Allan, Duffy,Livramento)
    C) 4-3-3 - Lukaku, Raphinha, Sarr, Ayling (Sissoko, Allan, Livramento)

    Sarr or Traore?
    ESR or Gray?
    Duffy or Williams?

    Cheers!

    A. Torres or b. raphinha.
One has massive potential for points but will be rotated. The other could grab a assist and goal here but will play most weeks. Such a tough choice.

What kind of role does Smith-Rowe play for Arsenal? Is he involved a lot in the attacks or is he box-to-box?

If I knew Greenwood and Torres are nailed, this would probably be my midfield for the whole season
Salah, Jota, Greenwood, Torres, Raphinha. A long gap behind these 5. Would may only need to reconsider Raphinha at some point.

I am certain KDB will be an option at some stage. When he's fit he gets points in his sleep. Also, what about Son if he hits the form of last season in partnership with Kane?

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin
        • 7 Years

Yes right, forgot about KDB. Not sure about Son though, Spurs aren't a very attacking side under Nuno and it doesn't look like it was about to change. I think that Jota, Torres and Greenwood will be close to him in terms of points/90 minutes and he costs 3m or so more than them.

I agree on Son but we're only three games in. We don't know how him and Kane will do as a partnership throughout the season.

          Wouldn't buy right now tho.

"If I knew Greenwood and Torres are nailed"

I can tell you right now, they are not nailed. Not long term anyway.

Greenwood probably has a decent run of games in him. Torres hopefully as well in the league while KdB and Foden are out but nailed long term? No chance.

    1. Pompel
      • 10 Years

Expected to e nailed for a run of games due to other injuries in team is no problem - we have FTs to deal with that. Rotation risk combined with likely 1 pt cameos is the problematic one.

    2. Sgt Frank Drebin
      • 7 Years

Yeah, that's why I'm not moving for them for now, but monitoring closely. Although if for example Greewood continues his form it will be hard to bench him. He may break to the first team for good. I think Torres may play quite often as number 9, Pep was flirting with this idea last season and spoke highly of Torres as a striker, but still that's Pep and a lot can happen during the congested period or when facing tough opponent.
