The best FPL midfielders for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard

Having already assessed the best goalkeepers and defenders on offer, our position-by-position analysis of the stand-out Fantasy Premier League (FPL) options for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard continues as we take a look at the midfielders.

All stats taken from this article are from our Premium Members Area.

BEST PREMIUM MIDFIELDERS

Captain Sensible – Gameweek 1 2

Having already combined two goals and two assists this season, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is the standout premium midfielder on offer.

The Egyptians 13 goal attempts ranks top amongst all midfielders, while he has also supplied three big chances for his team-mates. His immediate fixtures suggest that he can be a key captaincy pick, too:

While the fixtures are good, they perhaps don’t have enough appeal to warrant a Liverpool double-up, which in all likelihood rules Sadio Mane (£11.9m) out, though it is worth noting that he sits joint-top with Salah for shots in the box this season, with 11.

Elsewhere, Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) remains one of the most popular FPL picks, though it is harder to make a case for him following back-to-back blanks, plus the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m).

Last season, Fernandes was Manchester United’s talisman, finishing with an excellent 244 FPL points. However, with Ronaldo now in the team, it may well reduce his Fantasy appeal, especially if he were to take on penalty-taking duties.

Also consider…

Son Heung-min (£10.1m) has produced two double-digit hauls already this season, via two goals and four bonus points, though it is worth noting that Tottenham Hotspur’s fixtures do take a turn for the worse following Gameweek 4.

And unfortunately, it’s a bit too early to consider Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m), despite a possible return to the Manchester City bench at Leicester City in Gameweek 4.

BEST MID-PRICE MIDFIELDERS

From Gameweeks 5 to 10, Leeds United sit top of our season ticker for ease of fixture, which promotes Raphinha (£6.5m) in our thinking.

The Brazilian has already delivered a goal at home to Everton in Gameweek 2, with set-pieces giving him the edge over team-mate Jack Harrison (£5.9m). There has also been talk of a possible no. 10 role in light of Daniel James’ (£6.0m) arrival, which is something to monitor moving forward.

However, at the time of writing, there is uncertainty surrounding his availability in Gameweek 4, with possible FIFA sanctions hanging over several Brazilian Premier League players.

Diogo Jota (£7.6m) is likely to earn significant interest if Roberto Firmino (£8.8m) is sidelined with a hamstring injury. The Brazilian limped off shortly before half-time during the 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea in Gameweek 3, and was expected to undergo further tests.

We’re still awaiting an update on that, but if he were to miss a spell, Jota could well become one of the very best midfield options in the game, given his impressive per 90 minutes stats in 2020/21.

Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ fixtures are about as good as it gets between Gameweeks 4 and 9.

Despite losing three in a row, Bruno Lage’s side have faced three tough opponents in Leicester City, Spurs and Man Utd, and for those eying up their assets, the underlying numbers do point to a change of fortunes.

In his new left-wing role, Adama Traore (£6.0m) has attempted 12 shots and created nine chances for his team-mates so far. How his performances stack up against weaker opposition who will naturally sit a bit deeper remains to be seen, but his goal threat numbers are encouraging.

Francisco Trincao (£5.9m) also deserves a mention, though the fact he was hooked after 69 minutes in Gameweek 3 is a slight concern, especially with Daniel Podence (£5.5m) lurking.

Adama Traore (left) v Francisco Trincao (right) goal threat statistics 2021/22

Mason Greenwood (£7.7m) is more appealing than team-mate Paul Pogba (£7.7m) right now, given the Frenchman’s deeper role at Molineux in Gameweek 3, though his position in the starting XI isn’t 100% clear following the arrival of Ronaldo.

Also consider…

Ismaila Sarr (£6.0m) has produced eight shots and created eight chances so far, with a particularly appealing set of fixtures coming up – Wolves (h), Norwich City (a) and Newcastle United (h).

However, if you are focusing on longer-term picks, Mason Mount (£7.5m) is a solid investment given Chelsea’s fixture swing in Gameweek 7. The Blues midfielder has claimed two assists in the first three Gameweeks, and should benefit from Romelu Lukaku’s (£11.5m) excellent hold-up play in the final-third.

Like Salah, Said Benrahma (£6.4m) has combined two goals with two assists so far, though his underlying numbers (see below) do suggest that he might struggle to continue delivering at his current rate in the coming weeks.

Midfielders ranked by expected goal involvement (xGI) delta 2021/22

Finally, we should also touch on Man City’s midfielders, with the usual rotation risk caveats.

Ferran Torres (£7.1m) has thrived up front for Pep Guardiola’s side this season, returning 18 FPL points in Gameweek 3 alone. For some, a run of out-of-position starts for the champions is tempting, but with De Bruyne and Phil Foden (£7.9m) back in training, how many minutes he can get beyond Gameweek 4 is still a bit of an unknown.

BEST BUDGET MIDFIELDERS

Calvert-Lewin on Everton penalties - but Ings stays second in line at Villa 3

Demarai Gray (£5.6m) has impressed for Everton in his three league games for the club, scoring his first Toffees’ goal against Leeds United and following it up by giving Rafa Benitez’s side the lead at Brighton and Hove Albion in Gameweek 3. Now the challenge for the winger is to perform consistently week-in, week-out, something he was often criticised for not doing while at Leicester City.

Emile Smile Rowe (£5.4m) is an alternative option, if you believe Arsenal can kick-on with several key players returning of course.

From the bargain options, Billy Gilmour (£4.5m) has been taking set-pieces at Norwich City, while Moussa Sissoko (£4.5m), Allan (£4.5m), Yves Bissouma (£4.6m) and James McArthur (£4.5m) should at least offer appearance points each week.

Did no one learn with the Mahrez situation early on? Everyone thought he was sure of starts. This is Pep. I’m baffled.

Don’t get me wrong, i was as impressed as the rest with his Arsenal haul. But a blank, and were looking at 3 on the spin, a mass exodus and a price drop, so does one haul against a woeful Arsenal really change that much?

    leicester, SOUTHAMPTON, chelsea, liverpool.

3 of the hardest away fixtures the PL has to offer and let’s be real, with Foden and KDB back, would you he surprised if he was benched against Southampton with Leipzig so close?

Bookmark this, i’m calling it now, Torres flops, 4 blanks in a row incoming.

Couldn't agree more. And with Foden + KDB on their way back it just adds to the chaos. I can't see Torres starting all those games.

Spot on. Though if Torres starts "easier" games that would be brilliant for his price if you had a very good bench option

Yup, of course it’s a high-risk high-reward decision. Leicester’s defence isn’t very good right now though so that’s a good fixture for city attacking assets. And then you’ve left out that he plays Burnley, Brighton, Palace right after the Liverpool game which could also very well have goals in it.

That's so far in the future. The situation will have changed dramatically since then.

The issue with City assets is not their fixtures, it's purely starts. They can score against anyone.

Yes that’s true. He’s a 7M player that is playing OOP as the striker for the most attacking team in the league so it makes sense why people are trying to get ahead by bringing him in now. If it works it could be a huge payoff, and if it doesn’t just sell him.

I agree. I'm on a WC at the moment. Torres is in the team currently so i can, hopefully, get 0.1 profit then he is gone before the GW4 deadline.

It's a risk for sure, but now City haven't signed a striker, they technically don't have one at all (Jesus is much better on the wing). Torres has laid down a good marker to be the false (real?) 9. He had a legit goal chalked off against Norwich too and his all round play has been good. There will be some rotation for sure, but there's a lot of upside and your 4 blanks in a row prediction seems unrealistically gloomy based on the evidence.

Another reason why I didn't wildcard is European games are coming up. I'd rather wait and see if there's certain players who play in Europe and not in the prem or vice versa. Has anyone else considered this?

Not even taken it into consideration, wait and see what? PL teams always play their strongest teams in CL, why does not playing a WC now have to do with it??

Well I'd like to see how West Ham line up. I'd like to see how they rotate lineups to deal with the congested fixtures. For example if Chilly plays champions league would Alonso be an option for fpl? Its not a huge factor its just something I'd like to see before giving up my wildcard

Not necessarily just for that reason but more time = more data. The players people are jumping on now won't be the same when others hit form in the coming weeks. Kane, Kdb, Mane, Auba, Son all capable of being essential. Yet people are jumping on an unplayed Ronaldo and Lukaku after 1 game. Reeks of mass hysteria.

If he's not vaccinated. If he's fully vaccinated he doesn't need to quarantine, if he isn't he must quarantine for 10 days. He can cut that short to 5 with the test-to-release scheme. They're the rules for everyone else anyway, Portugal is on the amber list.

Has anyone done a study of how different an international gameweek compares to a normal week for price changes? Price changes over the last few days have been absolutely minimal, but then we have already had a lot of changes in the early part of last week and we should get a load more towards end of this week.

Without doing any research/calculations, I would assume an international gameweek like this would serve up approximately 30-40% more price changes than either of the gameweeks either side of it.

Some people might still see that as reason enough to take advantage. I just don't see that as justification alone for wildcarding.

The main thing is pressing the button on the very first day of the gameweek, but that's easier said than done, because you often don't decide to wildcard until half the matches have been played and all your players have got injured!

    Difficult

Maybe it's just a case of working through ragabolly posts to add up the number of price rises. Or there is probably a website that has the numbers, come to think of it. Liverpool?

there might be 30-40% more trades than a normal gameweek. But also likely to be 30-40% more wildcarding. Trades done on a wildcard do not contribute to price changes

FPL is a game played by millions of people. In the mad rush of 4/5 days between GWs, transfers are made in bursts: at the end of each matchday, the "morning after" the GW, and around press conferences (coincides with hype built by TV stations and fan conversations for the next game)

During the international break, these bursts still exist... But there's a gulf of inactivity between them. Even worse, people who are more active tinker and tinker until they convince themselves that they activate their wildcards, delaying price changes further

The only double risers are the same double risers of any quick-turnover GW: low ownership major hauls with pedigree or high hope/hype attached

    4. Pasqualinho

From memory, it's been pretty normal. IB1 is the most popular week for wildcarding and has been for as long as I can remember.

Price changes were less moderated in the past. I remember WC transfers were not being removed from the calculations in the early years. Players used to be able to make a lot of TV playing the WC in the IB.

That all changed and I think they moderated things further in later years. No way of making much TV with a WC any more

      • 8 Years

even if people weren't wildcarding on mass, which I assume they are, there are only a certain amount of transfers each team is going to do anyway, just like any other week - so not sure why there would be loads more price changes. Most normal non-WC players will make 2 or 3 transfers, just like normal

Ah yes. Mahrez last season, who had no real competition at RW (Bilva was more of a backup) and was definitely going to beat his 175-point return of 19/20 by getting more minutes. And then, Pep.

    Sanchez – (Foster)
    Shaw – Digne – Ayling – ( Livra – Duffy)
    Salah – Bruno – Jota – Greenwood – (Brownhill)
    DCL – Antonio – Ings
    1 FT, 0.6 ITB

    Are the right moves :
Bruno & Ings to CR7 and Traoré for (-4)
With next week Shaw to TAA

On WC this week, would like to get Raphinha but dont really want him against Liverpool this week.

Should I go for a 1 week punt on Saka or another mid under 7.2?

Start Torres which means keeping him for Southampton in gw5 and only get Raphinha in gw6?

Just start Raphinha and bank the transfer next week?

Get Raphinha now if u want to have him for the subsequent matches. You may end up making a forced transfer for next week and then hv to take a hit to get Raphinha.

Nothing wrong with Wolves form. To go 0-1 against Leicester, Tottenham and Man U is not bad form. Extremely unlucky to blank last round. Their fixture difficulty now changes compltely

Wolves have looked unlucky so far and have great fixtures, I wouldn't have to change a keeper until GW15.

Arsenal will wake up at some point and Tierney has good stats and Arsenal have good fixtures.

Raph is against Liverpool while Sarr has an easier fixture which is why. My alternate draft would have DCL + Raph + Sissoko in 3-4-3 instead and I bench Sissoko

I would still start with Raphinha - could well return against Liverpool and no guarantee Sarr returns vs Wolves who have been a bit unlucky to lose all three. Eventually you’ll probably take a hit down the line cause of this booked transfer so ask yourself if you are confident that Sarr (WOL) outscores Raph (LIV) by 4

Not really, no. He's not going to continue at his current rate of points but I think he'll be on a similar footing to Raph long term.

Would happily swap him out for a bad run of fixtures but I think the next few are actually quite decent (MUN included)

A few questions to help with wildcard please!

    1. Is Williams at Norwich the expected starter now?

    2. Thoughts on Shaw? A downgrade here to a 4.5 helps me massively in general team balance

    3. Thoughts on Jota/Torres/Greenwood?

    1. dbeck
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member
      • 6 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

      1. yes, expected to start, Livra is the best cheap option followed by Williams
      2. I like shaw, i think his crossing with Ron in the team will be a useful route to points. However, fixtures do turn so you could ride out with playing White, Ayling, Coady and come out ok, I dont hate it but guess it depends what the extra 1m gives you elsewhere. Maybe look at Livra and a 4.5 rotation
      3. Great picks but come with risk, for jota wait in the presser to see the extent of firmino. If he is out for 2+ weeks then Jota for me is a no brainer. Torres is the one i'm less keen on, KDB and foden are back in training and expected to feature (bench prob) this weekend. The GW after is home vs Soton and thats the game you want a city attacker and fitting in KDB and Foden into an already congested city mid/att will impact Torres mins

        Thanks - super helpful.

      1) Yep
      2) I think he's a great option, but only for the next 3-4. A downgrade for such a short period is probably ok.
      3) Jota looks a great option if Firmino is out for a few games. Greenwood same as Shaw. Torres I think is a no go.

I was adamant not getting any City players but with Torres playing striker I had to jump on the bandwagon. Jesus also a good pick with his spot on the right or as a striker. Very good value for money IMO.

Reckon City's midfield will be more prone to rotation compare to attack and defence.

KB plays midfield so do not see how that will affect Jesus or Torres.

Foden left wing meaning rotation with Grealish.

Jesus and Torres defenitely the City attacking assets tow own seeing that both can play striker or swap positions...

        1. Hotdogs for Tea
          • 8 Years

KdB has often been used as a false 9 in the absence of Kun, so has Sterling … basically everyone is back and it’s Pep and outside of Gundo or KdB i would be wary of any City attacking player getting more than 3 games out of every 5.

          1. FOO FIGHTER
            • 4 Years

KDB is getting injuries very often now. Not sure he will be rushed back.

At the end of the day, City assets will always be rotated but Jesus and Torres are pruced so well and should they haul even if they do not play the whole 90 minutes then Bob's your uncle.

Unfortunately, KDB and Foden are now back in training. Torres may get the next one, maybe two, but after that, KDB in the hole becomes a real threat. Sterling is always a threat there too, especially if he want to play Foden, Grealish, etc.
