The best FPL forwards for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard

Having already assessed the best goalkeepersdefenders and midfielders on offer, our position-by-position analysis of the stand-out Fantasy Premier League (FPL) options for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard continues as we take a look at the forwards.

All stats taken from this article are from our Premium Members Area.

BEST PREMIUM FORWARDS

Lukaku on target as Chelsea assets prosper at Arsenal

Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) may now be 36-years-old, but remains one of the world’s best players. The Portuguese scored 29 Serie A goals for Juventus last term, averaging 5.4 shots per match, and will surely pose a serious threat now at Old Trafford.

Following an isolation period, Ronaldo could feature for Manchester United in their next Premier League outing, an appealing Gameweek 4 fixture against Newcastle United at home.

Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) looks like an equally enticing prospect.

The Belgian enjoyed the most productive season of his career for Inter Milan last term, scoring 23 goals and providing 11 assists for the Serie A champions.

Since his move to Chelsea, he has scored against Arsenal and already racked up 10 goal attempts in just two appearances.

The Blues have a particularly appealing schedule from Gameweeks 7 to 11, but getting him in early could pay off, with Aston Villa up next at Stamford Bridge.

However, during the international break, Lukaku revealed that he has been nursing a minor injury and will have a scan on his thigh. It certainly doesn’t sound too serious, but of course, is one to monitor ahead of deadline.

Elsewhere, with Ronaldo and Lukaku dominating Fantasy discussion, it does perhaps feel like Harry Kane (£12.3m) is going a little under the radar. Last season’s golden boot winner returned against Watford in Gameweek 3, and will now hope to open his 2021/22 Premier League account at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Also consider…

Jamie Vardy (£10.5m) has a tough fixture against Manchester City up next, but it is worth noting that he has scored eight times against Pep Guardiola’s side in the last five years, and follows it up with games against Brighton and Hove Albion (a), Burnley (h) and Crystal Palace (a).

BEST MID-PRICE FORWARDS

Five-time top 1k FPL finisher Tom Freeman on Calvert-Lewin, Wolves and his Gameweek 2 plans 6

For Wildcarders, picking the Premier League’s most in-form striker Michail Antonio (£7.9m) is a bit of a no-brainer.

The West Ham United forward has enjoyed an excellent start to the season, producing double-digit FPL hauls in each of the opening three Gameweeks.

Given his history of hamstring problems, the only real concern is his schedule. Antonio has featured for Jamaica during the international break, while the Hammers Europa League campaign kicks-off next week.

However, on current form, he does feel like a must-have, and if he were to pick up an unfortunate injury there are at least plenty of alternatives we can turn to at a similar price.

Everton’s start to life under Rafa Benitez has been promising, with two wins and a draw from their opening three fixtures. During that time, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) has netted three goals, and providing he can recover from injury in time for Gameweek 4, looks like an excellent option to lead our lines.

As the focal point of Everton’s attack, with penalties in his locker too, Calvert-Lewin could be an effective set-and-forget option.

Patrick Bamford (£7.9m) also deserves a mention here having blanked in only one of his three outings so far. After Gameweek 4 has passed, Leeds United’s fixtures are excellent, and with an ownership of just 12.3%, is perhaps going under the radar.

Michail Antonio (left), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (centre) and Patrick Bamford’s (right) xG shot maps 2021/22 via our Premium Members Area

Raul Jimenez (£7.4m), who currently sits in just 2.8% of FPL squads, has blanked in each of his first three fixtures, but could do well when you consider that Wolverhampton Wanderers face Watford (a), Brentford (h), Southampton (a) and Newcastle United (h) next.

It’s also worth noting that he is the only Premier League player to register double-figures for both shots and chances created so far this season:

Also consider…

Callum Wilson (£7.5m) has already scored twice for Newcastle United, though it has been reported that the Magpies no. 9 could be out for a number of weeks due to a thigh injury.

Danny Ings (£8.0m) has made a real impact since moving to Aston Villa, scoring on his debut, before then netting an excellent overhead kick on his home debut. However, his immediate fixtures – Chelsea (a), Everton (h), Man Utd (a) and Spurs (a) – do suggest that there are better options available on a Wildcard.

That could be his replacement at Southampton, Adam Armstrong (£6.0m), who is a nice cheap option to go alongside the premiums. After scoring on his debut, he was involved in the goal in the 1-1 draw against Man Utd, and also won the late penalty which saw the Saints grab a point at Newcastle in Gameweek 3.

That leaves Ivan Toney (£6.4m) and perhaps Chris Wood (£6.9m) as alternatives, though it does feel like other forwards have the more appealing schedules.

BEST BUDGET FORWARDS

The best FPL forwards for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard 1

Having dropped to £5.9m, Teemu Pukki is the standout budget option on offer. The Norwich City forward scored 26 goals in the Canaries Championship-winning side last term, and converted a penalty against Leicester City in Gameweek 3 after a couple of testing opening matches against Liverpool and Man City.

His next five fixtures suggest that he could be a shrewd pick, too:

Below Pukki, options are limited.

The majority will struggle to see enough minutes, but Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m) and perhaps Josh King (£5.5m) could be the exception, especially with Troy Deeney and Andre Gray departing Vicarage Road.

However, it is worth noting that Dennis took up a wider role against Spurs in Gameweek 3, with King operating through the middle, which is something to keep an eye on moving forward.

GW4 was a bad week to wildcard or take early hits.

    So much uncertainty.

Probably need to wait until GW4 happens before being so sure 😉 I know what you mean, though.

WC is tempting, but alot of people probably fixed a team that didnt need fixing, boredom over the break, or ripping up a team for CR?

Yeah. Think early hits, except in certain circumstances, should be absolutely avoided. I'm willing to rather take the price drops these days tbh.

Pukki seems a shadow of his confident self. Done nothing against France either thus far. Same in Euros. Wouldn’t bother getting a differential in him.

What do you think he should have done against France? After all it is Finland against France. And same dilemma have been in the early schedule with Norwich. Agreed that the confidence is not the same what it is when he gets it going but I think these games aren’t the games to judge him

Same as last season, it’s a 15 man game.

You can do it and sacrifice very little with a starting XI.

Benching headache is one of the dumbest terms I’ve learned since taking this seriously. Why not say, my squad is too good?

      1. Utopsis
        • 4 Years
        2 years, 7 months ago

You'll very soon learn why benching headache is a very legitimate term, playing with 15

        1. Casual Player
          • 3 Years
          2 years, 7 months ago

Yeah nah. It's basically having a 2nd GK and a marginally better 8th attacker than a 4.5 MID. Better to have the benching headache than a starting headache.

          1. Utopsis
            • 4 Years
            2 years, 7 months ago

All very logical. But very soon, your benched GK, DEFs and/or 8th attacker will frequently return a solid set of points. And when you play them in indignation, they'll blank and your newly benched players will haul.

Only a matter of time. But sounds like you don't mind seeing those points on the bench, so you might be OK!

I just don't think you need all three big hitters. Eg, you could switch Ronaldo to Lukaku after 3 games. Funds can be spread better. You are missing TAA who looks dangerous over the next 3 games.

Yeah I guess, but you an never have all the players you want. Had TAA since stat of the season, but would just rather go with more fire power up top as I think there are a few decent options in defence without needing to go TAA - having said that but I am sure he will be one of the top scorers come end of the season

Yep, I always like to have at least four mids too. It looked like this, FWIW.

          Sanchez
          Alexander-Arnold, Rudiger, Semedo, Shaw
          Jota, Raphinha, Salah
          Antonio, Calvert-Lewin, Ronaldo

          Steele, Livramento, plus 2 x 4.5 mids

It would probably do well but i just can't do it, not on a wildcard. For DCLs ceiling, its just not worth it. Bamford is the one i want, so that would free up a little more funds but its still not easy.

I’ll be getting some Chelsea defence in for GW7.

Why would I want to spoon feed the minions? 😉 Rudiger to Tierney, Semeda to Llorente would be a start. I have the same forwards and no mids under £5m. Can’t afford to carry anyone at the moment.

On a WC? Not keen on them moves tbh, Rudiger is a nice price point. You shouldn't go too light at the back. Big teams will go on a run of keeping clean sheets.

    Which one is better?
    A. Jota and Jimmeniz
    B. Traorè and DCL + 0.8m ITB

DCL is so appealing but I think with Wolves fixtures Jimmeniz is a good pick
The advantage here is with Jota finishing abilities compared to Traorè sluggish last touch.

Anyone think Lage intends to move Wolves towards a 442? Could've been the reason for bringing in Hwang Hee-chan. The change of formation would lessen the appeal of Traore/Semedo, both would be negatively impacted.

Tried to fit Lukaku in, what way does this look?

    Sanchez (Steel)
    Ayling - Reguilon - Marcal (Livra,Williams)
Salah - Jota - Torres - Traore (Sissoko)
    Antonio - Ronaldo - Lukaku

    A) Lukaku, Reg & Traore
    B) DCL, VVD & Greenwood
    C) DCL, TTA & Raphinha

I found some of the analysis on tonight's WC cast (with Joe, Seb and Andy) to be pretty odd. Mainly that around Lukaku and Ronaldo. They're weighing up the cons of ronaldo, talking about united's problem not being finishing chances, but creating them (and them needing a DM). United scored 73 goals last year, the second highest in the league. United do not need to do any better at creating chances this year (proportionally speaking) for a striker to be a top option. All you want to see when you sign Ronaldo is that one player insists on hogging a larger proportion of those goals than any striker did last year. In a similar vein the argument that Lukaku is the more appropriate signing of these two players, and the one who will improve the team the most. You don't really want a player who improves a team, you want a player who has to do everything because he insists on having the ball (Ronaldo) or because they're head and shoulders better than the rest of the team (Kane/Son last year)

Anyway, I think they're both excellent options but found the analysis odd

I get your points - seems some of their comments are more about quality of the teams on real life and not fantasy (though I haven’t listened/watched yet).

I think one thing is that Ronaldo would require a change in system, or approach to play, for him to achieve his full potential. Lukaku seems a much more plug in and go player.

I don’t think that means Ronaldo is worse than Lukaku - but does talk to hope the teams play. Definitely expecting Chelsea to win the league and Man U to be 3/4.
But expect Man U to score more goals, and for an FpL forward that’s what matters most.

agreed that we have seen lukaku appear to settle in right away. of course we could see united adjust immediately to ronlardo. it's not like 'kick it at his head' is that complicated

          lol - i agree.
i think there is a bit more to it than that - who will play where behind Ron is a big question for me - and whether they bring the best out of each other too.
but I'm not worried about Ronaldo performing poorly - i effectively have him, Kane and Lukaku all on the same level - and form/fixtures will decide which to go for.

    What about Aubameyang for 9.9M?

I know Arsneal have been an avoid, but they have had a lot of players out who are returning and have a superb run for a while.

He also scored a great hattrick recently in the league cup...
