The best FPL forwards for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard

Having already assessed the best goalkeepersdefenders and midfielders on offer, our position-by-position analysis of the stand-out Fantasy Premier League (FPL) options for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard continues as we take a look at the forwards.

All stats taken from this article are from our Premium Members Area.

BEST PREMIUM FORWARDS

Lukaku on target as Chelsea assets prosper at Arsenal

Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) may now be 36-years-old, but remains one of the world’s best players. The Portuguese scored 29 Serie A goals for Juventus last term, averaging 5.4 shots per match, and will surely pose a serious threat now at Old Trafford.

Following an isolation period, Ronaldo could feature for Manchester United in their next Premier League outing, an appealing Gameweek 4 fixture against Newcastle United at home.

Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) looks like an equally enticing prospect.

The Belgian enjoyed the most productive season of his career for Inter Milan last term, scoring 23 goals and providing 11 assists for the Serie A champions.

Since his move to Chelsea, he has scored against Arsenal and already racked up 10 goal attempts in just two appearances.

The Blues have a particularly appealing schedule from Gameweeks 7 to 11, but getting him in early could pay off, with Aston Villa up next at Stamford Bridge.

However, during the international break, Lukaku revealed that he has been nursing a minor injury and will have a scan on his thigh. It certainly doesn’t sound too serious, but of course, is one to monitor ahead of deadline.

Elsewhere, with Ronaldo and Lukaku dominating Fantasy discussion, it does perhaps feel like Harry Kane (£12.3m) is going a little under the radar. Last season’s golden boot winner returned against Watford in Gameweek 3, and will now hope to open his 2021/22 Premier League account at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Also consider…

Jamie Vardy (£10.5m) has a tough fixture against Manchester City up next, but it is worth noting that he has scored eight times against Pep Guardiola’s side in the last five years, and follows it up with games against Brighton and Hove Albion (a), Burnley (h) and Crystal Palace (a).

BEST MID-PRICE FORWARDS

Five-time top 1k FPL finisher Tom Freeman on Calvert-Lewin, Wolves and his Gameweek 2 plans 6

For Wildcarders, picking the Premier League’s most in-form striker Michail Antonio (£7.9m) is a bit of a no-brainer.

The West Ham United forward has enjoyed an excellent start to the season, producing double-digit FPL hauls in each of the opening three Gameweeks.

Given his history of hamstring problems, the only real concern is his schedule. Antonio has featured for Jamaica during the international break, while the Hammers Europa League campaign kicks-off next week.

However, on current form, he does feel like a must-have, and if he were to pick up an unfortunate injury there are at least plenty of alternatives we can turn to at a similar price.

Everton’s start to life under Rafa Benitez has been promising, with two wins and a draw from their opening three fixtures. During that time, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) has netted three goals, and providing he can recover from injury in time for Gameweek 4, looks like an excellent option to lead our lines.

As the focal point of Everton’s attack, with penalties in his locker too, Calvert-Lewin could be an effective set-and-forget option.

Patrick Bamford (£7.9m) also deserves a mention here having blanked in only one of his three outings so far. After Gameweek 4 has passed, Leeds United’s fixtures are excellent, and with an ownership of just 12.3%, is perhaps going under the radar.

Michail Antonio (left), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (centre) and Patrick Bamford’s (right) xG shot maps 2021/22 via our Premium Members Area

Raul Jimenez (£7.4m), who currently sits in just 2.8% of FPL squads, has blanked in each of his first three fixtures, but could do well when you consider that Wolverhampton Wanderers face Watford (a), Brentford (h), Southampton (a) and Newcastle United (h) next.

It’s also worth noting that he is the only Premier League player to register double-figures for both shots and chances created so far this season:

Also consider…

Callum Wilson (£7.5m) has already scored twice for Newcastle United, though it has been reported that the Magpies no. 9 could be out for a number of weeks due to a thigh injury.

Danny Ings (£8.0m) has made a real impact since moving to Aston Villa, scoring on his debut, before then netting an excellent overhead kick on his home debut. However, his immediate fixtures – Chelsea (a), Everton (h), Man Utd (a) and Spurs (a) – do suggest that there are better options available on a Wildcard.

That could be his replacement at Southampton, Adam Armstrong (£6.0m), who is a nice cheap option to go alongside the premiums. After scoring on his debut, he was involved in the goal in the 1-1 draw against Man Utd, and also won the late penalty which saw the Saints grab a point at Newcastle in Gameweek 3.

That leaves Ivan Toney (£6.4m) and perhaps Chris Wood (£6.9m) as alternatives, though it does feel like other forwards have the more appealing schedules.

BEST BUDGET FORWARDS

The best FPL forwards for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard 1

Having dropped to £5.9m, Teemu Pukki is the standout budget option on offer. The Norwich City forward scored 26 goals in the Canaries Championship-winning side last term, and converted a penalty against Leicester City in Gameweek 3 after a couple of testing opening matches against Liverpool and Man City.

His next five fixtures suggest that he could be a shrewd pick, too:

Below Pukki, options are limited.

The majority will struggle to see enough minutes, but Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m) and perhaps Josh King (£5.5m) could be the exception, especially with Troy Deeney and Andre Gray departing Vicarage Road.

However, it is worth noting that Dennis took up a wider role against Spurs in Gameweek 3, with King operating through the middle, which is something to keep an eye on moving forward.

Just take the -4 if Firmino out for few weeks. Tsimikas got 17 points over 2 games- some return for 4 m defender. 17 (-4) still a decent return and one goal by Jota against leaky Leeds will pay back hit +

Sarr potentially but means I miss out on jota and still have 3x 4m at the back, it does mean I have funds the weak after to strengthen the defence but I also have son

Just had a look back at some stats from last season, Raphinha averaged 5.5 PPG against non top 6 opposition (Chelsea, United, City, Liverpool, Spurs, Leciester). Cancelo averaged 6.2 PPG (ignoring the statistical anomaly of his red vs Brighton).

I know people on here don't like money on the bench, but there's definitely merit in rotating a strong 14 man squad, you get a lot more bang for your buck from the 10 outfield players.

Assuming you get the rotation right

      1. F4L
        • 9 Years
        2 years, 7 months ago

yeah, but more often than not you end up with at least 2 of your squad playing at top 6 opposition (especially if you double up for teams with great runs, like Leeds now).

The key is that even if you have to bench someone against non top 6, the players on the field have an even higher chance of returning. You're just playing the odds, over a prolonged period they're in your favour.

I think after this week Raph has about 7 of the next 8 against non top 6 so you would bench cancelo for all of those ?

no, would just bench whomever out of the 14 have the worst fixture.

        1 premium (Lukaku/Salah/CR7) for captaincy, 5 defenders @ 5.5mil +, then 10 mids/attackers between 6-8mil.

Rudiger plays whether 3 at the back or 2; Chris plays if back 3 but could be dropped for a 2. I believe he’s had the most minutes under Tuchel or something, but I feel Rudiger is more ‘nailed’.

Doesn’t look that way. TSilva seems to be the player to come in whilst Rud/Chris/Azpi seem to be the starters. Chris has played more games than TSilva.

Traore playing more centrally and more advanced (heat maps), and that's inevitably translated to better attacking stats.

There's also been a big push behind the scenes from Wolves execs to keep hold of Traore with big clubs sniffing around, so you imagine when Podence is back fully fit (which looks like now), Trincao will be losing minutes with Traore being given 90, or close enough.

I like an idiot, accidently transfered him out today.

I think I was going to remove him regardless but didn't actually want to pull the trigger yet.

With EL and rotation uncertainty, there are too many other good potential options out there, so bagged the 0.2 rise nonetheless.

Bringing in Torres and weakening the possible replacements off the bench when he fails to start could hurt in the medium term i guess. But i see the attraction (as an owner for sure).......nothing really says to me that its time for Benrahma to go Daniyal though tbf. Good fixture, team still on form, Europa starting next week could indicate the right time to sell is next week. Gl

Others have suggested Sar, he's a good pick i think. You've mentioned Traore too and considering the fixture run he could be a very worthwhile transfer, just comes down to how you view the boys from the Black Country......explosion imminent or useless barn door practice.

    Would you wildcard this team?

    Sanchez
    Shaw Coufal Duffy (Livramento) (Amartey)
    Salah Bruno Jota Greenwood Benrahma
    Lukaku Antonio

the wildcard could be something like

    Sanchez
    Trent Shaw James (Duffy) (Livramento)
    Salah Raphinha Torres Benrahma
    Ronaldo Antonio DCL

Defence improved, not a massive improvement in attack though.

no idea how Tomiyasu will fare in the Prem - not worth the risk to me, get a Wolves player I reckon at that price.

in general most will say defense is too weak - and i'd think that too, that's what you get for going 3x super expensive players.

maybe Bamford > Armstrong? - use that money to strengthen the back?

I mean that defence is horrible, midfield littered with rotation risks, you’ll be desperate for another wildcard with 2 weeks.

Don't like it, sorry mate, is that really double Arsenal defence? I mean I have held White for fixtures so can understand that but the double up?

Haven't seen a Ronaldo/Lukaku/Salah team I like yet, would definitely be downgrading one of Ronnie or Lukaku and spreading the funds in mid and defence, Antonio the obvious replacement for mine.

Agree with others, defence is too light. Downgrade Bamford to 4.5, get Raphinha in and use the difference to upgrade defence ?

Yeah my bench is Duffy, Livramento and Gilmour so probably Gilmour 3rd sub at the moment. I think you’re right though, might just hold the transfer at the moment as I’m happy with my team overall.

I think when everyone is fit he'll play 1 in 2 games. Also the question is where he plays. That being said, in the short term with a half decent bench, not the worst punt.

    Foster Livramento Gilmour Ayling

Why does everyone keep saying this? Surely1 and then 2 fires to put out down the line? In 2 or 3 GWs? When we are all struggling with Lukaku v CR7 v Kane or Bruno v Son v Value or tryin to ship Benny, Greeny, etc or still struggling with a 4.0 def or a 4.5m mid.

Everyone’s team different- If planning WC around week 7/8 then Jota a good option as nailed to start if Firmino out and if not good price point to jump on someone else.

If I ask folks around, the general consensus seems to be that Ronaldo will score 20+ goals this season. He is a prolific goal scorer, I have absolutely no doubt, he will start banging in

But, is he worth 12.5m ? At 12.5m and the most expensive player in the game, he needs to score 250+ points to make it worth it. My sense is that he could score something like 20-25 goals and 5-10 assists.

If I look at Vardy's performance two seasons ago - he was at 23 goals and 7 assists - 210 points.

Is 12.5m worth it for 210 points you reckon? Or do you think Ronaldo will score more than 23 G + 7A ?

depends how easy it is to predict his hauls I reckon - imagine he will be a pretty reliable captain against crap teams

    Thoughts on my latest WC?

    Raya (Steele)
    TAA, Shaw, Cancelo, James (Livramento)
    Salah, Torres, Greenwood, Raphina (Allan)
    Ronaldo, Antonio (4.5)

    0.3 left in the bank

I like this. The 2x premium and strong at the back ones feel the best combo of explosive and safe to me.

      No idea on the GK.

Who starts this week with James’ red? Allan/Livra?

Cheers, yeah never played four at the back before, but feel there's some good value in defence. Not sure in who'll play ahead of James this week, thinking I may punt on Allan

Very interesting WC. with Cancelo and James, might be worth upgrading Livramento to a White. I know people are shitting on Arsenal now, but they will turn it around. They werent bad defensively last season.

Do you think Livra is more of a risk than say Allan then? Fifth Mid is more likely to be first on the bench. I think James and Cancelo are fairly safe, but take your point, maybe white to be safe?

This looks really good, I'm a fan of the 4 strong defence. Only suggestion would be consider having the 4.5 forward in the mids. The forward around the 7.5 - 8 mill mark look stronger/less rotation than the mids around that mark. Even if priced out of DCL, there's still Jimi and Bamford

Likelihood of both Allan and Torres going up tonight?

Have them both in a potential WC draft and only 0.1 spare but haven't decided whether or not to pull the trigger yet.

FPL stats has both looking likely to go up but have been for a few days now and think Wildcard transfers could be affecting it. What percentage on FPLstats is a guaranteed rise in current WC climate?

no-one has a clue - but I'm sure there is some sort of tweak you can make if they do both rise, plus with potential injuries/covid stuff lurking the planned WC will probably need to be altered slightly anyway

      1. School of Poch

Agree, worrying over nothing. Allan likely to be 2nd or 3rd on the bench anyways so he's not that important and can afford for Torres to rise once to get the starting 11 I want.

Might not even end up pulling the trigger anyways, finding it a difficult decision
