The best FPL forwards for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard

Having already assessed the best goalkeepersdefenders and midfielders on offer, our position-by-position analysis of the stand-out Fantasy Premier League (FPL) options for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard continues as we take a look at the forwards.

All stats taken from this article are from our Premium Members Area.

BEST PREMIUM FORWARDS

Lukaku on target as Chelsea assets prosper at Arsenal

Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) may now be 36-years-old, but remains one of the world’s best players. The Portuguese scored 29 Serie A goals for Juventus last term, averaging 5.4 shots per match, and will surely pose a serious threat now at Old Trafford.

Following an isolation period, Ronaldo could feature for Manchester United in their next Premier League outing, an appealing Gameweek 4 fixture against Newcastle United at home.

Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) looks like an equally enticing prospect.

The Belgian enjoyed the most productive season of his career for Inter Milan last term, scoring 23 goals and providing 11 assists for the Serie A champions.

Since his move to Chelsea, he has scored against Arsenal and already racked up 10 goal attempts in just two appearances.

The Blues have a particularly appealing schedule from Gameweeks 7 to 11, but getting him in early could pay off, with Aston Villa up next at Stamford Bridge.

However, during the international break, Lukaku revealed that he has been nursing a minor injury and will have a scan on his thigh. It certainly doesn’t sound too serious, but of course, is one to monitor ahead of deadline.

Elsewhere, with Ronaldo and Lukaku dominating Fantasy discussion, it does perhaps feel like Harry Kane (£12.3m) is going a little under the radar. Last season’s golden boot winner returned against Watford in Gameweek 3, and will now hope to open his 2021/22 Premier League account at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Also consider…

Jamie Vardy (£10.5m) has a tough fixture against Manchester City up next, but it is worth noting that he has scored eight times against Pep Guardiola’s side in the last five years, and follows it up with games against Brighton and Hove Albion (a), Burnley (h) and Crystal Palace (a).

BEST MID-PRICE FORWARDS

Five-time top 1k FPL finisher Tom Freeman on Calvert-Lewin, Wolves and his Gameweek 2 plans 6

For Wildcarders, picking the Premier League’s most in-form striker Michail Antonio (£7.9m) is a bit of a no-brainer.

The West Ham United forward has enjoyed an excellent start to the season, producing double-digit FPL hauls in each of the opening three Gameweeks.

Given his history of hamstring problems, the only real concern is his schedule. Antonio has featured for Jamaica during the international break, while the Hammers Europa League campaign kicks-off next week.

However, on current form, he does feel like a must-have, and if he were to pick up an unfortunate injury there are at least plenty of alternatives we can turn to at a similar price.

Everton’s start to life under Rafa Benitez has been promising, with two wins and a draw from their opening three fixtures. During that time, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) has netted three goals, and providing he can recover from injury in time for Gameweek 4, looks like an excellent option to lead our lines.

As the focal point of Everton’s attack, with penalties in his locker too, Calvert-Lewin could be an effective set-and-forget option.

Patrick Bamford (£7.9m) also deserves a mention here having blanked in only one of his three outings so far. After Gameweek 4 has passed, Leeds United’s fixtures are excellent, and with an ownership of just 12.3%, is perhaps going under the radar.

Michail Antonio (left), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (centre) and Patrick Bamford’s (right) xG shot maps 2021/22 via our Premium Members Area

Raul Jimenez (£7.4m), who currently sits in just 2.8% of FPL squads, has blanked in each of his first three fixtures, but could do well when you consider that Wolverhampton Wanderers face Watford (a), Brentford (h), Southampton (a) and Newcastle United (h) next.

It’s also worth noting that he is the only Premier League player to register double-figures for both shots and chances created so far this season:

Also consider…

Callum Wilson (£7.5m) has already scored twice for Newcastle United, though it has been reported that the Magpies no. 9 could be out for a number of weeks due to a thigh injury.

Danny Ings (£8.0m) has made a real impact since moving to Aston Villa, scoring on his debut, before then netting an excellent overhead kick on his home debut. However, his immediate fixtures – Chelsea (a), Everton (h), Man Utd (a) and Spurs (a) – do suggest that there are better options available on a Wildcard.

That could be his replacement at Southampton, Adam Armstrong (£6.0m), who is a nice cheap option to go alongside the premiums. After scoring on his debut, he was involved in the goal in the 1-1 draw against Man Utd, and also won the late penalty which saw the Saints grab a point at Newcastle in Gameweek 3.

That leaves Ivan Toney (£6.4m) and perhaps Chris Wood (£6.9m) as alternatives, though it does feel like other forwards have the more appealing schedules.

BEST BUDGET FORWARDS

The best FPL forwards for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard 1

Having dropped to £5.9m, Teemu Pukki is the standout budget option on offer. The Norwich City forward scored 26 goals in the Canaries Championship-winning side last term, and converted a penalty against Leicester City in Gameweek 3 after a couple of testing opening matches against Liverpool and Man City.

His next five fixtures suggest that he could be a shrewd pick, too:

Below Pukki, options are limited.

The majority will struggle to see enough minutes, but Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m) and perhaps Josh King (£5.5m) could be the exception, especially with Troy Deeney and Andre Gray departing Vicarage Road.

However, it is worth noting that Dennis took up a wider role against Spurs in Gameweek 3, with King operating through the middle, which is something to keep an eye on moving forward.

I'm thinking of going for Kilman over Marcal or Coady (all £4.5m) because he seems to have aerial threat. But will he start regularly? Is he a rotation risk? He did play full 90 in the first 3 matches. Any opinions?

Back 5 or back 4? Seems he likes back 4 that puts all defenders in a different situation. I would go straight for Sais if I knew his place was safe? A shame Wolves easy fixtures came early. We need more info.

Exactly. Would've 100% gone for Saiss if he was 4.5m. I do think Kilman will the one to be benched if Lage shifts to a back 4. Might go with Coady, since he's a safer pick.

Isn't Boly back now? I assume he'll be a threat to any CB that isn't Coady

Monitoring Son and hope to bank FT,

If he's out, however, best sub-9m Mid? (Already have Benrahama + Raph)

    a) Jota
    b) Gundo/Grealish/Torres
    c) Mount
    d) Other

I am in the same situation, are you planning to keep hold of Son even if passed fit? My plan was to roll any transfers, I have White as a backup if Son does not start.

Yep! Plan is to hold Son and do him + Toney to Jota + Jiminez next week,

therefore Son > Jota a week early doesn't make much of a difference

Jota perhaps, if Bobby F. is out.
Traoré if Wolves can start maximising on their chances.

8.5 FWD (would be 3rd forward) or 8.5 MID (would be 5th midfielder)

Forward options - DCL, Jimi, Bamford, Jesus, Wilson
Mid options - Ferran, Havertz, Grealish, Greenwood, Mount

Which one would you go for in the short term, lets say 6 to 8 gws.

What this really comes down to is security

I was all for 352 with two mids in the target range (jota, torres, greenwood, mount). Firstly mount is gw7 and isn’t as appealing as the others. The rest all scream rotation, with jota secured if firmino is out for a little while

Therefore i came to the conclusion that actually it’d be better having the 3rd forward - since DCL and Bamford are the talisman of their respective clubs

In the end DCL (injury aside) has the better fixtures

I will still have either jota or Greenwood in midfield as well

      1. KING KOUNDER

Am inclined towards DCL as well, I just dont trust Pep, he could so easily bench Ferran against SOU.

This. As long as you leave 1 space open per position for the Chelsea boys going without for 3x GW’s is ok.

        Ronaldo > Lukaku
        Jota > Mount/Havertz(with CR7 ££)
        Shaw > James/Rudi

Its really quite easy to move to Chelsea assets

For next 6-8 Gw If you pick only one then it has to be Bamford.

I'm with partridge on this... initially was thinking of switching to 352 on WC but those 7.5ish mid all (bar mount) seem a bit risky long term compared to dcl, bamford, antonio, ings (prob coming back in later) etc

because you don't chase points lost/won in the past.
and because they are underachieving - both defensively and offensively.
and because they are playing real well and pass the eye test
and because they have the best fixtures.
and because numbers always regress to the mean.

      What are you struggling with?

It’s just trying to predict they will come into form, most teams that have a bad run are going to either sink lower or bounce back, I think most here assume wolves are a decent team who will finish about half way Which makes at least some of their next run of games pretty much must win for them after losing first 3

      This + decent underlying numbers

      1. Derbz87
        • 9 Years

I think Wolves could be a strong case for ignoring or at least treating expected goals or chances with caution. Some sides have exciting attacking options but no natural goalscorers. If Jiminez isnt the same player or close to the player he was I fear for them this season. Brighton were a classic example last season - create plenty but was it 40 goals and less than that the season before? They just arent attractive attacking options for me, too unreliable and not clinical enough.

What do you think of this wc? Strong squad rotating between a 3/4/3 when Dennis has a strong fixture and 4/4/2 otherwise

    Sanchez 4.0
    Rudiger, tierny, Semado, Ayling, Taa
    Salah greenwood jota Raph
    Ronaldo Antonio Dennis

Obvious plans would be lukaku for Ronaldo and greenwood or jota to Mount for the Chelsea triple up potentially

3 of their next 4 fixtures aren't exactly great either, I mean it's City but they started slow last season and have had 2 easy games since Spurs and things didn't exactly go how they hoped in the transfer window, I'll be waiting a bit before going near that team but even then I'll probably just go for defence

There are enough quotes from Pep now that it's safe to say Torres is going to be the striker City currently lack. His form up front certainly presents a compelling case that this is how it is going to go at least while he keeps his form and fitness.

Adama averages 9.3 dribbles per game, he obviously went absolutely crazy with that.

he's been a headless chicken for years...a couple of seasons ago he did do well enough with 8 or 9 assists and a few goals but apart from the his output is shocking

When i watched the Wolves games my thinking is that he shoots and passes are ill timed, but actually 2 times he's been one on one with Kasper and Lloris, on both those there is not bad or hopeless attemots, first against Kasper he does what any striker would do, a bit unfortunate that it goes just outside of the post, and Vs Lloris that is actually a fantastic save. Question for me, will Wolves get those kind of chances Vs lower/lesserteams?

Morning guys, a couple questions regarding Arsenal:

    A) Why am I doing this to myself
    B) Pepe or Saka
    C) If Arsenal move to a back 5, does Tierney play LWB or LCB

    Thanks

Pepe higher roof as Saka isn't used to scoring too much but I'd stay away from both.
      Tierney is then LWB.

Don't touch Arsenal players, until they look as a team.

Is ronaldo fixture proof or flat track bully?

    WC draft for gw7

    Sanchez
    Christensen, ayling, trent, dier
    Salah, raphinha, benrahma
    Lukaku, Ronaldo, antonio.

Having both lukaku and ronaldo will save the headache for captaincy

Ronaldo is a bit of both really. Well capable of scoring in any game but also likely to put weaker teams to the sword

I’ve had to sacrifice my midfield to afford that, can just about do it with Sarr and Traore for Raphinha (and banking the 0.2m on Benrahma)

Just wonder if it’s worth doing all that or spreading the cost round for the likes of Jota, Greenwood and losing one of Ronaldo/Lukaku

Best option here? (Not on a WC, just simplifying proposed transfers)

    A. Bruno, Sarr, Toney
    B. Greenwood, Jota, Toney +2.8
    C. Greenwood, Torres, Jota +2.1

B but upgrade Toney with the cash

Meslier seems under-rated (stats-wise at least).

    - Averaged 4 saves per match last season (140 in 35 matches).
    - Nearly a CS every 3 matches (11 in 35).
    - Scored 154 pts. in 35 appearances last year.

He should be on more WC teams IMO. Selected by just 3.3%.

Can reach 150-170 pts. this season, if those stats are carried forward this season.

Llorente is back too now and Leeds have a significantly better goals conceded record with him in the team. If I could afford him I'd go for him, I guess most aren't due to the Liverpool fixture and not wanting to book in a transfer on a GK.

Meslier a good pick, for sure. liGoalkeeper selection a real head scratcher though. To me, it seems like the pricing of the 5m's like Sa, Schmeichel, De Gea and said Meslier shoul offer what you would expect in terms of ppm over the 4.5m's like Sanchez, Guaita etc . Too early to tell who will emerge as the real set-and-forget value pick, imho.

I agree, meslier on top of my watchlist. Its the 0.5 million... Could sanchez even get close?!

    Sanchez / Steele
    TAA / James / Coady / White / Livramento
    Salah / Raphinha / Torres / Jota
    Ronaldo / Antonio / Jiminez

    Decent WC squad?
