Win a share of €250,000 in FanTeam’s Champions League Fantasy game

Sponsored by FanTeam

The UEFA Champions League is back and with it comes a chance of winning a life-changing sum of money.

Fantasy managers can put their European football knowledge to the test in FanTeam’s €250K Champions League Group Stage game, which comes with a guaranteed first prize of €50,000.

As the name of the game suggests, there is a total of €250,000 in the kitty, with the top 1,250 managers walking away with cash prizes.

With a maximum of 15,060 entries permitted and, at the time of writing, only around 1,829 teams currently entered, the odds are favourable for those who know their Sheriff Tiraspols from their Shakhtars.

Entries cost just €20 (£16.80), a sum that many of us will have readily forked out in our Fantasy Premier League mini-leagues in the past.

An unlimited number of teams per user are allowed, too.

Even better: the game rules and scoring system are very similar to FPL, so skills are easily transferred from one game to the other.

So if you’ve ever wanted to own both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in your Fantasy side – now you can!

HOW TO PLAY: A BRIEF GUIDE

  • Slightly from FPL, FanTeam Champions League managers build a team of 11 players that includes at least one goalkeeper, three defenders, two midfielders and one forward.
  • Safety Net feature: If your player doesn’t start, he will be replaced by a starting teammate in the same position whose value closely matches the original selection (descending prices only).
  • A maximum of three players from a single Champions League club can be picked, with the budget for the initial squad set at 100.0m.
  • A captain is chosen to earn double points, with a nominated vice-captain scoring double if the captain doesn’t play.
  • Two free transfers are allowed every Gameweek, with each additional transfer costing minus four points. Managers can roll a maximum of two Gameweek transfers forward but can never have more than four free transfers in their locker.

With only the group stage covered in FanTeam‘s game, there is no need to worry about long-term planning for the knockout rounds, price changes or chip strategy: it’s simply a six-Gameweek tournament, which runs from mid-September to early-December.

For a rule breakdown of the rules, see the above image.

SCORING SYSTEM

Seasoned FPL managers, or those playing FanTeam’s €1m season-long Premier League game, should have no problem in adjusting to the €250K Champions League Group Stage game.

The familiar scoring system is shown above, with the minor differences outlined below.

KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FANTEAM AND FPL
  • There is no Bonus Points System, which is replaced by plus/minus points (+0.3/-0.3) if a team is winning/losing during the period a player is on the pitch.
  • Goalkeepers get 0.5 points for every save made, unlike the one point awarded in FPL for increments of three stops.
  • Committing a foul that leads to a free-kick goal or converted penalty is penalised by minus two points.
  • Midfielders and forwards get an extra point for completing the full match.
  • Each shot on target is rewarded (+0.4 for forwards/midfielders, +0.6 for defenders, +1.0 for goalkeepers).

With so many popular players marked yellow or read, suddenly feels like the 80 pt gameweeks are going to fall to 35-40 pts gameweek.
Will be lot of disappointment after 2 weeks of tinkering

    Guys team

    Sanchez foster
    Taa shaw veltman ayling tsimikas
    Salah bruno raph ben brownhill
    Antonio Toney ings

Planning to do Bruno ings to torres rono -4. But raph veltman gives me the headache. Ayling is the bench player and we don't know whether brownhill will play. So even after taking -4 there are issues. WC time? What do you guys think?

    Preferred wc team.

    Sanchez steele
    Taa shaw semedo livra williams
    Salah ben jota traore
    Rono Antonio dcl

Ben to raph next week if I go for bam instead of dcl.

      Nah, no WC.
Ayling will play and is a perfectly fine bench replacement.

Worst case you lose 2pts from a defender not showing up - and you WC for that? Seems unnecessary.

Veltman will probably play, you’ll want Raphinha for the future weeks.

    A) DCL, Greenwood, Jota (Ayling)
    B) Lukaku, Raphinha*, Sarr (Williams)

*If Raphinha is out I could go Traore/Benrahma for one week. Rest of the bench is Sissoko & Livramento.

I'm guessing A makes most sense and downgrade one of Greenwood/Jota to Torres/Raphinha later on if needed?

How'd be your goalie on a WC?

I'm looking at Bachmann from the 4.5s.

Meslier interest me somewhat but having trouble justifying the 0.5M extra. 152 points last season, assuming they'll do slightly better defensively with Llorente.

Yep. Was planned for me after BB in GW1 and dead-ended taking Trent out last week for example. I always wildcard early anyway and wanted to try something different. With more premiums in play, I thought it'd be even better to keep all the money in XI.

      2. Pariße
        • 9 Years

I always found interpreting stats to rate a goalkeeper (in fantasy and overall) the hardest. Ideally, you're looking for someone in a team that doesn't concede many shots, but that decreases his save potential, hence someone from the middle like Martinez was golden last season, Meslier was also at the top with Leeds conceding a lot of shots and having bad CS potential.

        1. _figu

Last season was too easy with Martinez, now I feel it's a very tough call. With such an early WC, I'm not even ruling against a goalie change at some point, so starting with Bachmann makes the most sense for me given fixtures.

    Sanchez (4.0)
    TAA, Shaw, Duffy (Livramento, Ayling)
    Salah, Bruno, Greenwood, Jota, Benrahma
    Ings, Antonio (Perica)

    2ft, 0.5 itb

Think I’m down to this decision (fitness/news pending)

    a. Ings > DCL (roll a FT, leave 0.3 itb)
    b. Ings + Bruno > Gray + Ronaldo (Use 2 FT, leave 2.4 itb)

Eight Premier League players will be stopped from playing for their clubs this weekend after Brazilian football authorities triggered a Fifa rule to prevent them appearing.

Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Leeds United will all be affected.

Players not released for an international window can be banned for five days after the window ends under the Fifa regulations.

    The decision covers 10-14 September.

Brazil invoked the bans after the Premier League stopped players from appearing for their country if it meant travel to red list countries.

Players travelling to red list countries would have had to miss several games on their return because of the 10-day isolation period required under UK rules.

In addition to missing their sides' weekend games, Chelsea defender Thiago Silva and Manchester United midfielder Fred will also not be allowed to play in their teams' opening Champions League games against Zenit St Petersburg and Young Boys next Tuesday.

However, it is understood Brazil have not asked for Everton forward Richarlison to be prevented from featuring against Burnley on Monday. It is felt Brazil showed leniency in that specific case as Everton allowed Richarlison to play at the Olympic Games when the regulations did not force them to.

The move also affects three Liverpool players, Roberto Firmino, Fabinho and Alisson; Manchester City pair Ederson and Gabriel Jesus; and Leeds forward Raphinha, who had been called into the Brazil squad for the first time.

It means eight Premier League clubs will be denied players this weekend after previous moves from the Mexico, Paraguay and Chile football federations to stop Raul Jimenez, Miguel Almiron and Francisco Sierralta from playing this weekend.

It is understood the clubs have been notified of the situation by Fifa and are now considering the situation.

Negotiations are continuing behind the scenes and it is understood the Premier League clubs do not regard this as a fait accompli.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino previously asked the UK government to provide players with exemptions to allow them to honour their international commitments, even if it meant them travelling to red list countries.

It is understood the world governing body will keep pushing this given the likelihood of the same situation arising again around international fixtures in October and November.

The Premier League are also known to be talking to stakeholders across the game to try to work out the best way forward.

"It is understood the world governing body will keep pushing this given the likelihood of the same situation arising again around international fixtures in October and November."

What's to stop these players announcing their immediate retirement from international competition? They'd be free to play for their clubs in Oct/Nov. They could reverse their decisions at the end of the season when covid and backlogs are done.

Tierney if he manages to stay fit could be a great value! I'll opt for White though. As little money invested in Arsenal as possible, just need someone better than Williams as 4th def. Vestergaard is not a bad shout.

Average position shows that Gray is basically playing as a striker.

Have not watched any matches but saw some highlights and plenty of attack with Gray sneaking in crosses which are inch perfect to be slotted home plus he is quick.

For his price I do not see how anyone can look past him.

Fair enough. Guess he's a very low risk given his price. Their next 7 look really good, too. I did put him in mostly hoping for the double rise, but if I put more into defence, he might stay!

    1 FT, 1.3 ITB

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Duffy
    Salah Benarahma Rafinha Harrison
    Kane DCL Antonio
    - Livra Gilmour R.James

Original idea was to do Kane to Ronaldo, but with Rafinha out, would you prioritise any other move here with the FT?

Torres for me... I get the (Pep) rotation risk, but we're talking about a MID playing FWD at MCI, with Jesus saying he wants to play left wing (and doing well), for a mere £7.1m, I rather like those odds... Just need a half decent 4th DEF / 5th MID for cover...

Thoughts on Bruno and Perica to ESR and Ronaldo for -4 to give me this lot?
Still have Barnes as my weakest link but will deal with him next week.

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Webster
    Salah Bruno Barnes ESR Benrahma
    DCL Antonio Ronaldo

Bruno out for a hit ot a good look and wasn't ESR excused from U-21s cause unwell.
Your posted team contains Bruno and Ron.
City might have Scott Carson in goal so Barnes (c) could be an option

I hate this chaos, now luck plays a huge role, not skills, strategy, planning.

    1. F4L

if you know who isn't going to play before the deadline it's not really an issue.

The real chaos this GW could be positive COVID tests from those who travelled + forced quarantine for those who aren't double jabbed.

That wasn't clear at the time so planning ahead would have still involved the thinking that they would miss out. Strategy would also involve knowing the possible consequences if they didn't go.
