Watchlist

The FPL players on the Watchlist ahead of Gameweek 4

Back by popular demand, the Watchlist articles make a return to Fantasy Football Scout in 2021/22.

In this series, we pinpoint the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who are the stand-out medium-term targets based on fixtures, form and value.

Seven-time top 10k finisher and Scout regular Zophar will be taking the reins this season, producing a bi-weekly piece and discussing the rankings by position.

With the ‘template’ FPL team starting to splinter following the arrival of Romelu Lukaku and Cristiano Ronaldo, plus Wildcards aplenty activated, Gameweek 4 seems like the ideal time to revisit the Watchlist.

*Something to note below is the continued inclusion of the Brazil and Mexico players who may miss this weekend’s Premier League games as a result of their non-involvement with their countries over the international break. Should the proposed bans materialise, then their standing in our Watchlist will of course be affected – something that has influenced our decision to omit Emiliano Martinez, who will definitely be absent in Gameweek 4.

ABOUT THE WATCHLIST

Our reguarly updated Watchlist, which is visible on the sidebar, ranks players in each position for the month ahead – or rather, the next four Gameweeks.

This allows site users to get a longer-term view on recommended players beyond the weekly Scout Picks.

Players are selected according to factors such as FPL’s form rating*, club injuries, club morale, forthcoming fixtures and whether or not the player in question is likely to be a bargain in FPL.

The table displays the player name and club, along with the abbreviation for the factors that played a part in their ranking. A key for these factors can be found below the player in the table and looks like this:

Arrows before the name indicate whether a player as climbed or fallen in our reckoning since the previous update or if they are a new entry into the tables.

Please note that while we may generally only recommend one player from each club within a position, alternative assets at the same club can always be considered.

*points divided by a club’s matches played over the last 30 days

PL WATCHLIST: BEST GOALKEEPERS

Emiliano Martinez is the notable omission from the goalkeepers’ Watchlist. The Argentinian has been ruled out of Gameweek 4 due to quarantine regulations and there are still some doubts regarding his Gameweek 5 availability, as well. This problem could rear up during the next international break, too.

Robert Sanchez and Daniel Bachmann retain their top two spots but Hugo Lloris moves up to third. Spurs have been allowing a high volume of low-quality chances which is ideal for a goalkeeper’s FPL points potential. David Raya has been included for a similar reason, as Brentford have conceded just two big chances so far.

Jose Sa is one worth considering for Wildcarders and is a great ‘set and forget’ option with appealing fixtures lasting all the way through to Gameweek 14. Only Man City have allowed opponents fewer shots than Wolves over the opening three matches.

FPL WATCHLIST: BEST DEFENDERS

The league’s leading chance creator, Trent Alexander-Arnold, sits on top of the defender rankings. Luke Shaw’s appeal is enhanced with Cristiano Ronaldo an able aerial target for his crosses, as well as Manchester United having three home games in the next four.

Wolves have a great run of fixtures all the way to late-November and Nelson Semedo is my preferred option from their defence. He’s been getting into good positions and I think he is more likely to hold his spot down in the side compared to Marcal on the opposite flank.

Reece James is my Chelsea defensive asset of choice, despite his suspension in Gameweek 4. Ben Chilwell has yet to get any minutes this season and the right-back’s crosses are going to be key for Romelu Lukaku.

I was tempted to slot Ben White in the Watchlist but after Norwich the Gunners play Burnley, Spurs and Brighton, which I’m not too convinced about, so he and the rest of the Gunners defence are a bit of a wait and watch presently.

FPL WATCHLIST: BEST MIDFIELDERS

Mohamed Salah retains his spot on top of the rankings, while Bruno Fernandes stays in second. The Portuguese’s appeal appears to be slightly diminished with Ronaldo’s signing but we still don’t know yet what sort of role he will be afforded, and I refuse to believe he will completely cease to be FPL-relevant. We are working on assumptions at the moment and I do believe Fernandes will still tick along with goals and assists.

Ferran Torres is a big mover up the Watchlist after his haul against Arsenal. Pep Guardiola has lauded the Spaniard’s movement and intelligence in the box and said that he sees him as a striker now. Even though rotation is likely to bite, it is much more palatable at a budget price and the upside is massive.

With rumours suggesting that Roberto Firmino may miss a few matches, Diogo Jota is an extremely attractive short-term option. When he plays, he posts number similar to that of Salah and the Reds’ next three fixtures are extremely appealing.

Demarai Gray hasn’t recorded great underlying numbers but has passed the eye test and should retain his spot in the team in the short term for Everton’s good run. I was tempted to put Ismaila Sarr above him: the Senegalese has created eight chances and taken six shots in the box so far and has a great run of matches especially over the next four. If Watford score, he is very likely to be involved in some capacity.

FPL WATCHLIST: BEST FORWARDS

FPL’s top scorer, Michail Antonio, sits on top of the forwards’ Watchlist, ahead of the most-talked about Fantasy asset of the last fortnight, Cristiano Ronaldo. The veteran Portugal international has been training with the Man Utd team since Tuesday and there is a good chance of him starting against Newcastle. Three of his next four matches are at home and we have already seen the impact that fans are having this season. I like his next three fixtures more than Romelu Lukaku’s, so he comes in ahead of the Belgian in the premium pecking order.

There are some injury doubts around Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the time of writing but if passed fit, he is FPL gold with penalty-taking duties added to his locker. Rafael Benitez has clearly built the team with a game-plan to get as much service to the Englishman as possible.

Raul Jimenez should arguably be higher given Wolves’ upcoming run of fixtures but I am just not fully convinced that the Mexican is back up to speed yet after his horrific injury last season. As mentioned in the introduction, there is also the lingering threat of a Gameweek 4 no-show.

Finally, Patrick Bamford should rise up the Watchlist after the fixture against Liverpool is out of the way.

Should I WC this team? The original plan was to do Ings to Calvert-Lewin, but now I could be without 3 midfielders...

    Sanchez (Steele)
    Trent, White, Tanganga, (Aylin), (Omobamidele)
    Salah, Son*, Bruno, Raphina*, Smith-Row*
    Antonio, Ings, (Perica)

No if you have FT available.
No even if there's a way to fix it with -4 to ensure 11 starters.
You might miss 2 of the 3 midfielders in the coming weeks.

Would only be concerned about how your planning on getting on Raph or leeds assets if they start sending it during their good run of fixtures after pool

James > Shaw & Mount > Jota good moves, but I would roll x2 transfers and take 2 into GW7 and get them both then when fixtures swing

Yes a WC is less balanced with Ronaldo, Lukaku and Salah but it is very doable and if I didn’t do it then if Lukaku and Ronaldo explode over the next few then we’re going to want to get them and that will mean a -8 probably at least. Worth going for it or not?

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years

If you want them and can see yourself holding for a while then go for it. I already had Lukaku and Salah but I'm doing it, can see myself keeping Lukaku for most of the season, Salah much the same and well if Ronaldo does what he normally does then he'll likely be very hard to drop too. I can get a team which I feel is balanced enough, can't keep TAA and Son so of course decisions have to be made but I'm happy with how it looks to me.

I do feel like I'd like to deal with Duffy, I just don't know how many clean sheets I can see Norwich getting. I was going to move him to a 4.5 if I kept Raphinha but figure I'll try deal with it later but I might end up going for Williams by the time the deadline hits. Chilwell is definitely a risk but I feel like taking one for the possible upside, he's back now and "ready" supposedly, I'll give him 3 or 4 games and see how many he plays and if it doesn't work out will move to James or Rudiger maybe (although if James was available this week yeah I probably would have just gone for him).

Both are decent options for different reasons. Duffy is more of a 3rd defender type, you'd play him in 'favourable'
fixtures, whereas Williams is probably more of a 5th defender, only to be used as an auto sub.

Looks good, I assume James > Chilwell, but suspended. In which case I would continue with Shaw for a bit longer and then switch to the Chelsea defender in gw7. Tierney over Matip?

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 3 Years
        2 years, 7 months ago

Yeah James makes more sense than Chilwell but with Tuchel saying he's ready I want to take a punt on him, hard to resist at 5.7 even with the risk of rotation but I'll likely move to James in a few weeks. I didn't have Shaw but had Maguire but I'm not too certain of their clean sheet numbers with the upcoming fixtures (even the slightly better ones before the really tough run) so I felt if I stuck or went with Shaw I was just booking in a transfer. I'm not convinced Arsenal will be much better either even with better fixtures, I think both Norwich and Burnley are very capable of scoring against them so I'm avoiding but Tierney is definitely still a great option with the positions he gets into. I'm thinking Matip will be there for maybe 3 weeks and then I'll see how Liverpool are doing defensively and if I think I'll need to get TAA back in. He has good attacking numbers anyway and Leeds aren't great at defending setpieces.

Fair point, but apart from Newcastle they have games against West Ham who have scored 10 in 3, Villa that have scored 5 in 3 while still not looking great yet, and Everton that have scored 7 in 3. ManUtd conceded in their first two games and if not for an incredible block by AWB and double save by De Gea they would have conceded in the third too. I'm also concerned that Ronaldo being there and unlikely to do much defensive work and what I'm guessing will be a very offensive approach in the next few games while riding the high of Ronaldo's arrival, I don't think it's worth it when I'm only really looking at one game where I'd feel pretty confident they'll keep a clean sheet when there are alternatives that have better prospects IMO.

Not fussed about how many goals those teams have scored. They've all played terrible teams. 3 of 4 have to go to old Trafford

If you are committed to a punt like that (Chilwell) then you feel like a genius when it pays off so go for it.

Matip also has the potential to be a very unsexy value pick that just ticks along and before you know it he's team of the year candidate. I have a blind spot for Tierney I will admit, surely the season starts now for Arsenal. At least you get mad upside with KT, the other Arsenal defenders I would not trust at all.

Yeah it's a fair point, I mean Arsenal's fixture list can't really look much better and even through their bad performances Tierney has been one of the very few that looked OK. It's hard to catch him in a good run of fitness too so if you can during a good run where they really need a good result then it could pay off extremely well.

I'll admit looking at his playing time under Tuchel was a big curveball as I was dead set but I still feel like taking a chance. If anything he did seem to be preferred for bigger games and he'll need minutes before the Spurs and City games so I'll hope he'll get them against Villa and not in the CL!

I'll try -4/-8 first to fix it such that I've 11 starters including Lukaku or Ronaldo, WC otherwise. Assumes Lukaku/Ronaldo start.

yeah i think you need to restructure. With Penandes impacted, you no longer have someone who can perma-captain.

Yes you're right (and no I am not on a WC). Just fearful of not owning Jota this gw I guess. The sensible move is probably to hold until after Soton.

    Best budget 4th mid:

Traore and Sarr both great options. If Sarr is on penalties, i think he might edge it.

Currently on wildcard, would appreciate any feedback. I really want havertz over mount as Havertz was my only none template hunch but only way would be to either downgrade TAA or have 2 x 4.5 instead of 1 x 4.5 and a 6 (currently Traore) and that feels too risky.

Feedback, good or bad is appreciated.

    Sanchez (foster)
    TAA Shaw White (Livra, Williams)
    Salah Mount Traore Torres (Allan)
    Antonio DCL Ronaldo

I wouldnt take any more money out of that defence. If you really want havertz I think you could downgrade torres to 6.3 mid

Given how well Alonso has started, do you think he will be replaced by Chilwell or will both share gametime?

Think he will at least start against Villa at home and so could be a shrewd pick for those on WC. Thoughts?

I brought Alonso in this week on the basis that if he starts he could easily score against Martinez-less Villa, and if he is benched I will sell him for James. The key is to make sure your bench is ready.

Chilwell in FFS predicted lineup for Villa. There will be rotation but Chilly is no1. I would strongly advise against alonso on WC, though wouldn't necessarily rush to take him out if you have him already

At this point I almost want DCL to be ruled out. I have him already, but I have no path to Ronaldo without a -4 and losing Grealish (who I'm reluctant to lose)

    What's the best route?

    Front 7 of:
    Salah Fernandes Grealish Raphinha Benrahma
    DCL Antonio Scarlett

    A) Fernandes, Grealish, Scarlett > Ronaldo, Jota, Sissoko -4
    B) Fernandes, DCL > Ronaldo, Jota

i wouldnt touch that front line (unless DCL ruled out), can you make a def move and float the other?

I could do Grealish > Jota and roll. Considered it, but I want Ronaldo not only because it's him and the fixtures, but also the restructure to include a premium forward.

Its an option if you cant bring yourself to let go of ronaldo (which i think may happen to a lot of teams). Doubt anyone outscores lukaku gw7-11 tho
