Who are the best Wolves defenders in FPL for the Gameweek 4 fixture swing?

Having previously focused mostly on Wolverhampton Wanderers’ midfielders and forwards in his first ‘eye test meets stats’ analysis of Bruno Lage’s troops, Stevie of EyeTestFPL switches attention to the club’s defenders in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Wolves, in their 3-4-3/back five system seen below, boast one of the meanest defences in the league so far, conceding only 20 shots inside the box (the fifth lowest) despite some tough early fixtures.

With Lage’s outfit about to embark on a long run of great fixtures until Gameweek 14, we will assess some of the best Wolves defensive options in FPL – particularly from an attacking standpoint.

Nelson Semedo (£4.9M)

During offensive phases, Wolves tend to push both of their full-backs, Marcal (£4.5m) and Nelson Semedo (£4.9m), high up the pitch in a 2-3-5 shape.

Such advanced positioning of the full-backs can occasionally lead to offensive turnovers deep in the opposition half as they are expected to press high up the pitch, especially against the weaker teams.

Compared with Marcal, Semedo is arguably the better player on the ball and possesses considerable dribbling ability, which is the reason why he is often tasked with bigger offensive responsibilities.

Above: Touch heatmaps from our Premium Members Area

Based on his touches over the last two Gameweeks, clearly Semedo (above left) is the player given more freedom to roam forward, making six touches inside the box compared to Marcal’s (above right) one.

There is fluidity in the Wolves frontline. Every time there is a player filling in out wide such as Adama Traore (£6.0m) here, Semedo will use the opportunity to make underlapping runs into the penalty area.

Lads, my head is wrecked. Going around in circles for past two weeks on Wildcard and can't get it to where i want.

Can you help me PLEASE before I call the men in white coats.

    Sanchez (Steele)
    Alonso, Tierney, TAA, Shaw (Williams)
    Salah, Torres, Traore (Bissouma, McArthur)
    DCL, Ronaldo, Antonio

Considering removing TAA and DCL for Lukaku & 5m mid but i just cant seem to get a balance I like.

Really appreciate any guidance lads, I want to enjoy the game again !

Youll enjoy it again after this deadline

      Looks good, dont remove Trent

Get rid of Alonso, he will soon get rotated and get in another playing mid like Raphinha or Sarr

Id ditch Alonso, theres a chance he doesn't start anymore - chilwell is back up to fitness according to Tuchel.

Do you have any money In the bank? It seems a little low to me off the top of my head

I really don’t think you need Lukaku at the moment.
How would you remove TAA for a mid?
Down grade a defender though for sure. Your midfield is really crap.

    4. Eh, just one more thing ...

No, your midfield is a shambles already .. don’t weaken it further. I think you want to start again … with a 343 formation …. Don’t mean that to sound harsh just my view on it at first glance. Get rid of Alonso also.

Honestly seems ridiculous that FIFA would have any authority to require league matches to be forfeit or tell clubs what player they can / cannot play.

Even more unbelievable that FIFA doesn't seem to have made any public statement about its position on this issue. At least I haven't been able to find it.

Yeah the latter is something I find very odd, I would have expected an official statement that was pretty direct to have been made, maybe they're keeping quiet to appease the Brazilian FA or something but it just seems odd.

Anyone else after some thinking sitting by the river starting to come to the conclusion not bringing in Ronaldo and sticking with Bruno this week may be a safer bet?
Have a strong feeling Ronaldo will start from the bench in GW4, and if I can save some money itb to manage Ronaldo's price rise next week, thinking I might roll one FT for next week.

Right, DCL training photos suggest he's looking nice and healthy, finally settled on my WC team, any obvious changes/upgrades? I have gone for Jota over Gray and a slightly cheaper defence to allow for it.

    Sa
    Trent - Christiensen - White
    Salah - Jota - Torres - Traore
    DCL - Ronaldo - Antonio

Bench: Steele - Sissoko - Williams - Livramento

0.3m in the bank, will look to bring Raph in for Torres in a game week or two.

I dont like Wolves either in that period - avl lee EVE cry WHM. All attacking teams, mostly away. We dont know if Palace are actually good or bad yet.

The issue for me is Man Utd defenders are 5.5, but you can pick up their GK for 5.
Wolves defenders are 4.5, but their GK is 5.

Thats some very odd pricing right there.

The point is you can access the Wolves defence for 4.5 (no attacking threat). The save points are not worth 0.5m.
Its a valid question as to whether Shaws attacking output less DDG save points is worth 0.5m however.

Doubling up Sà and Semedo here. I too was about to pick DDG for the same reasons you listed, but put aside the price between keepers and defenders on the same team, I just think Sà will get more points than DDG over the next 8 weeks thru save points, BPS and CS

City were the best def last year and have started on the same trajectory with only conceding 7 shots in the box from the first 3 games (take with a pinch of salt at one was vs norwich and the other was 10 men Arsenal). Still the next best is 16 shots in the box conceded.

I am seeing far too many wildcards with Dias in? He'd be one of the first names on my WC

          mmm yep

No Mendy, but Walker and Zinc affect Cancelo

Who would you go for between Dias and Cancelo? I think Dias. Nice set and forget (don't forget his last season's 142 game after joining the game late).

Reminds me of Kompany at 6.0 11-12

    4. Pacer.
      • 9 Years

He got 142 points last year. If we're talking about season form, isn't that really disappointing for a 6ml. Numerous 5.5s outscored that. And if we're not talking about season form, who really wants to be rotating relatively unexplosive defenders

      1. Ser Davos
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 7 months ago

There's a very valid case to go without, but there's something about the predictability of Dias. A glue pick

        1. Pacer.
          • 9 Years

Get exactly the same from any united defender at 5.5 and they have 3 home games in the next 4.

United rarely start all that well. And of the two defences united arguably offer the greatest potential for improvement on last year with Varane

          1. Ser Davos
            • 8 Years
            2 years, 7 months ago

Diasgree, I think the Utd defence looks shaky, at least atm. The only reasons to go Shaw over Dias are the .5 and the immediate fixtures.

Otherwise Dias over Shaw as personal preference.

            1. Pacer.
              • 9 Years
              2 years, 7 months ago

We hear the same thing every year about United's defence and every year they end up matching or outscoring city for less.

They're often slow starters. On a wildcard I'd go for the player with 3 home games in 4 instead of the one with 3 away games in four inc che liv. It's six million for a tree stump imo.

Who is the best £7.5m 1 week punt mid? That guy will become Raphinha next week. Have £1.1m itb.
    Sanchez
    TAA Tierney Coady
    Salah(vc) Jota Benrahma? Sarr
    CR7(c) Antonio DCL
    Foster Duffy Livramento Allan

1 week punt, I would go Mount against Villa or Torres, as Leicester are not as solid as I have seen them before..

Amazing how everyone is jumping on wolves, Haven’t been able to hit a barn door. Beaten by Leicester who then went on to get smashed 4-1 to West Ham, then beaten by spurs without scoring, then again beaten by man united again without scoring.

      Traore as a punt

Otherwise, it's Sa and/or one of Semedo - Coady - Saiss - Kilman - Marcal

Boly and the other guy covering Marcal waiting in the wings

Have a look at Jimenez and Traore stats. Their defensive stats are also very good. Did you watch the games or just look at the results?

Seems to have forgotten Man City didn't score vs Spurs but won 5-0 twice.

I was at the king power wolves we’re pretty poor. What you don’t see on tv is what a headless chicken Traore actually is and Jiminez up top who never looked like scoring. Man united conceded against both Leeds and Southampton, Leicester had four put past them at West Ham. I’d be surprised if they get top 10.

They are gonna score soon, been unlucky, and defensively they've been pretty good also.

    Sanchez Steele
    TAA Shaw Coufal Ayling Tsimikas
    Salah Bruno Benrahma Raphinha Brownhill
    Antonio Ings Obafemi
    2 ft 3.3 itb
    A) Bruno, Ings, Obafemi out ->Torres, DCL Ronaldo in for a hit (excact money)
    B) Bruno and Obafemi out, for Ronaldo and Torres, no hit. Play Ings this week and ditch him for free next week
    C) Fix other stuff like Tsimikas, get Jota and Chelsea defenders and WC!

If A or B I cant afford Greenwood, just Torres or less, Jota would mean an extra hit.Maybe punt on Sarr and upgrade defender next week, have Chelsea in mind. If Im ok GW7 not sure I need WC then. Can just get Chelsea defender and later Ronaldo to Lukaku.
    What do you think?

I have Benrahma but if I hadnt I would be torn between A and B.
Sarr has nice fixtures and is their main man, Im thinking he might be better pick than Torres for now, save money to later upgrade elsewhere. What do you think of my situation above?

Hi Guys, much appreciated and quick look at my WC team.

    Backmann, (Steel)
    Dias, Shaw, Rüdiger (Semedo, White)
    Salah, Jota, Raphinha, Sarr (Sissoko)
    Ronaldo, Antonio, DCL

I know I have lost Trent, but I spread the money over the backline and I feel its still strong with a good beach for rotation.

    Thanks and good luck

Looked good at first glance BUT no TAA
You have Semedo and White as benchers it appears ? Lose money somewhere TAA is a must at least so for the next 3 gws

I would have to downgrade Rudiger for Williams as back up and get in TAA, Then you have TAA, Shaw and Dias!! Thats a great defence.

You could easily have 1 playing midfielder some weeks.

In fact Salah has been benched at times hahaha

        4 3 3 no thanks either

Have a 31pt lead over my rival currently (who I assume will get Ronaldo (C) this week) having a slight advantage already I'm tempted to punt on Lukaku and give him armband over bringing Ronaldo in myself, worth it in the circumstances?

    Only interested in mini league
    Cheers.

Actually yes this is a good point I'll probably end up keeping Bruno this way, where I assume he'll have to sell to get Ronaldo

Think I'll do it, ..he who dares etc

          Thanks

Was some Spur spending time in Croatia at a training camp? Well we just went on the Red list for Europe and wondering if that will impact said player. Sanchez maybe?
