Five tips for FPL managers on a Gameweek 4 Wildcard

The international break is almost over and normal service is about to resume. We have seen a lot of Wildcards being used over the last fortnight and looking at a lot of the drafts, I do have some bits and pieces of advice to give to those who are deploying the chip. My only intent with this article is to offer some food for thought to those hitting the ‘activate’ button.

For what it’s worth, I’m currently not on a Wildcard and I mentioned on this week’s episode of The FPL Wire why that is the case. We also discuss Wildcard picks in detail in case you want to check it out. Below is a small snippet.

Now that that is out of the way, let us start with the basics.

1) Take a Long-Term View for Defence

The best FPL defenders for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard 3

Make sure that while selecting your defenders, you’re looking at the Season Ticker for eight Gameweeks at the very least. I’d look at the ticker for ten Gameweeks, for what it’s worth. Defence is not where you want to be spending future transfers.

It is this reason why I’d probably ignore a Manchester United defender, for example. Yes, the fixtures in the next three Gameweeks are good for the Red Devils, but not so much after that. I know that United did very well in tough matches last season but I am still a firm believer in fixtures when it comes to defenders. I also think Manchester United are not as fixture proof at the back as perhaps a Chelsea or a Manchester City are.

2) Balancing Risk

This is a big point and applies to both defence and attack. Let’s talk about defence first.

If you’re betting on a defender like Andreas Christensen (£5.0m), you need to have sufficient cover on your bench. There is a slight Thiago Silva (£5.4m) threat and if you want to pick Christensen (I think he’s a really good selection), make sure that your fourth defender is a nailed-on £4.5m asset. The Dane could miss some games and you want sufficient cover should you want to go that way. Don’t be owning Christensen, Livramento (£4.1m) and another £4.0m defender. Simply put, that is asking for trouble.

The same applies in attack. The opportunities that exist with Diogo Jota (£7.6m), Mason Greenwood (£7.7m) and Ferran Torres (£7.1m) are great and there is a pretty big upside with all of them. But I would warn against owning all three. In case it doesn’t work out (because of the obvious risks attached) for all three, which is the worst-case scenario, suddenly you are panicking on a Wildcard. And this is assuming that you might not have other fires to put out in the future.

If you are on a Wildcard, one of the biggest advantages is being a few moves ahead of the chasing pack and having a risk-balanced wildcard squad means that you’re leaving yourself space to make opportunistic transfers in the future instead of always putting out fires and owning all three of the above names means that you are risking exactly that. I think it is okay to own two of them given your other picks are risk-free and there is definitely no problem with owning atleast one of them. Just make sure you’re balancing the risk in your squad and have a strong chunk of picks that you are happy to leave in your team for a long time. Don’t get drawn to all the shiny new toys and make sure your squad has a heavy selection of ‘sure things’.

3) The Chelsea Spots

Lukaku on target as Chelsea assets prosper at Arsenal 2

Chelsea are top of the Season Ticker from Gameweek 7 onwards for a long time. They look like they are going to assert a strong title challenge and a lot of Fantasy Premier League managers will be on Chelsea triple-ups from that point.

My current opinion is that Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) and Reece James (£5.6m) are the best two picks from the team at the moment. You can obviously start with Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) and switch later to Lukaku if you want to play the fixtures, and that is your call, but I would make sure that I have at least one Chelsea player if I was playing a Wildcard now. I’d go with James, and a strong playing defender in Gameweek 4 to play instead of him, or with Christensen.

The fact is that this season is still only three Gameweeks old and we don’t have enough information with regards to who the right Chelsea assets are. Ben Chilwell (£5.7m) is still falling in price and could be an absolute gem in a few weeks’ time (he’s the better pick versus Antonio Rudiger (£5.5m) if nailed), and there are also a couple of midfielders from Thomas Tuchel’s side who might make a strong case for inclusion in your team in the near future.

Keeping these factors in mind, I’d throw in one Blues player in my squad at the moment but I wouldn’t go more than two Chelsea assets in my Wildcard squad (assuming one of them is Lukaku) so that I leave space open for a third correct spot once we get time to process more information.

4) Don’t draw conclusions

FFS International: Best wildcard picks per position 1

Simply put, we’re very early in the season. I wouldn’t be bullish on any opinion formation this early into the campaign. This is the time to absorb as much information as possible, keep an open mind and try to assess how the season might play out. Now is not the point at which you put your neck on the line with any opinion. Now is just the time to be a sponge and let things marinate in your head.

The data and inferences that emerge out of Gameweek 4 will represent 25% of the information from 2021/22 as a whole. The point of me citing this is to let you know that we still don’t know a lot and the impact of emerging data every week is very significant, which is why you need to have an open mind and not form conclusions at this stage.

5) Go the extra yard and do some more research

Scout Notes 14

You are picking a team right now for a long time. The next Wildcard is pretty far away at the moment so take that extra time in selecting your players. Read more articles, check more historical data, find more quotes and information. Make sure you’re going that extra mile to play Devil’s advocate with each pick. Also, think a little macro and predict where you might be spending future transfers; if it feels like you’re planning too many moves, I would re-work my Wildcard to make sure you leave some open space to react to what happens in the next few Gameweeks.

A couple of other factors.

I do think you go for two premiums and not three for squad balance (I think one big-money midfielder and one similarly priced forward seems ideal at the moment). I personally would not give up on Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) in defence. His numbers look very encouraging early on and he is fully capable of another 200-point season.

That is it from me for this Gameweek. I don’t want to overwhelm you further, and just think of the above as just some ‘friendly’ advice. You obviously need to back your own thinking and conviction, and my intent is to only offer food for thought.

Until next time.

If son is out, i'm contemplating:

    Son + Mahrez + Ings -> Jota + Torres + Ronaldo (-8)

I've got no way of getting ronaldo in without selling Son, as I don't have bruno.

I mean -8 is brutal, but that looks like it should pay off assuming son is out.

Agreed, I never take -8s. I could just go Ings -> DCL but that still leaves mahrez and son, and no ronaldo.

The alternative is to WC. Current team:

      Sanchez
      TAA - Shaw - Livramento
      Salah - Son - Mahrez - Greenwood - Benrahma
      Ings - Antonio

I have Son, Mahrez, Wilson (inj?) and Ings and i'm also considering your -8.

I am worried Son is probably out, Mahrez will likely start v Leicester but if they're all subject to Pep Roulette i want the cheapest mid they have. And Ings has a dreadful next 4.

I haven't considered a WC because -8 isn't the end of the world at this point, asnd a WC could still be better used in GW7 or beyond.

Absolutely agree with him about not getting rid of TAA.

Haven’t WC yet, but if I did then Chelsea players would definitely be there.

If I’d have had an extra £0.3m I’d have gotten Mount instead of Torres for free last night with the 2nd of my 2 FTs.

I got him in, but prepared for the fact that he may have to go in the next few weeks.

I have Raph and Benrahma so losing him isn’t an issue as there will be others in that price bracket I can get. It’s a risk with genuinely huge upside, but one I was prepared to take.

Re: the Brazilian threat. I never saw any formal Brazilian FA or FIFA announcement. Was this just the usual shitetalk?
Anyway, team set, only decision is whether Tsimikas or Duffy as 2nd sub.

Journalists have confirmed it and PL clubs / managers have responded to it but yeah it's odd FIFA haven't made a formal statement on it. I'm guessing it might be to try appease the SA FAs by not dunking them right into it even though it's known. This is going to be a problem once again in a few week's time unless a solution is found so it can't just be ignored but seems like PL clubs are refuting the basis of the bans

I think UEFA's announcement is going to force the issue. No way FIFA can mess up an UEFA league now, and risk an actual schism in the game. UEFA have more clout than FIFA suspect, given the level of Asian money in Europe. And ultimately as has been suggested, CAS would rule in favour of the EPL, given that the matches were being played with no reasonable expectation of the players being able to return to play the next competitive match, as has been the standard for literal decades. That sets a precedent, and FIFA can't litigate their way out of that if gets to a slugfest.

I also think that for purposes of GW4, clubs will be fighting solo. Leeds can play Rapha. He was not obliged to accept the call-up. He's Brazilian, but not a capped player. From what I read Liverpool are happy to leave sleeping dogs lie, but they've a great back-up in Caomhín.

I suppose it matters not so, unless Tsimi comes on for 10 minutes instead of a potential 90 minute Duffy. Don't think Duffy loses his place at all. He's had a powerful start to the season both at club and country level...

Why is going for a livramento any worse than going for say an Ayling

Both seem nailed, both attacking in poor defences

Atm I’m on Taa shaw Christensen with Williams and livra on bench + no place to squeeze budget to get an extra 4,5 def

I had jota for the first two gws, and although I was happy to get his 2 goals, I did feel slightly lucky re mins and points.
Whereas mount is fairly nailed, lower ceiling but perhaps with lukaku that ceiling may have raised a bit? I know the fixtures aren't ideal but happy to make the move now to save the transfer later.

Hi, first time posting and am one of those horrible WC people this week, sorry.

    Sa (Sanchez)
    TAA, Shaw, Reguilon,
    Salah, Torres, Greenwood, Benrahma, Allan
    DC7, Antonio

    Bench: Denis, Semedo, Duffy

Intending to get Lukako, Mount and Raph by GW7.

Should I play Jota instead of Greenwood for next 2 weeks ?
Should I swap Reguilon for someone else to get some cash in the bank ?
Should I swap Benny for a cheaper option (Gray, Traore, ESR etc ?)

    Cheers!

I have Greenwood right now but I would go with Jota if I had to choose between the two now. Jota is nailed on with Frimino being injured and will be OOP whilst Greenwood SHOULD start but Ronaldo, Cavani and Sancho are all going to be competing for a couple of same spots.

I wouldnt want to play Allan each week? Think 343 is the way to go as great options up front this season. Otherwise most of this team looks good.

Has Benrahma boat sailed or is he still a good option ?

Involved in 4 goals in 3 starts and playing behind the most inform striker in the league.

(sot MU lee BRE eve) in next 5 are good fixtures)

And i dont think europa will be a problem as likes of Vlasic Lanzini and Yarmo will lower the burden on likes of Antonio Fornals and Benrahma

Definitely hasn't sailed - Bruno > Benrahma seems to be a popular move.

I think I'm getting rid next week tbh

He is a still decent option as long as not rotated

Feel like i need to get more info on other alternatives in that price range 6.5 or below( (Already got Raphinha)

Not entirely sold on likes of Sarr Adama or Gray yet

I got on late (GW3) so haven't had any of his hauls! But, I think he is still a good option, and I'm going to give him at least 3-4 more gws.

He hasn't sailed, I accidently removed him which was annoying. I think his shelf life is only 1 more game though.

He's still a good option but I think you have to take into account the possibility of rotation now with both Vlasic's arrival and EL games, as well as the impact on the squad overall from travelling to and from Europe for games on Thursdays before weekend matches. I wouldn't be so sure Moyes will just rest him and Fornals and play Vlasic and Yarmolenko in Europe, Vlasic will be integrated and Yarmolenko has a bad record with injuries and I think he'll want to do well in Europe too anyway. Benrahma also might be moved out wide if Moyes mainly wants Vlasic to play no.10 which reduces Benrahma's appeal a bit too. I don't know that I'd go for him if I didn't have him right now

I think likes of Benrahma and Antonio will be taken off at around 60 mins in europa to reduce the workload

Dont think westham will be largely affected as its early in the season tbh. Gotta go based on form and if we see signs that it does affect them then we can ship for likes of Sarr Traore or Gray

Dont like Christensen pick. Go for a more attacking fullback. Ie: Reguilon Coufal Tierny etc

I don't trust Arteta, I was getting sucked into going with Tierney but I've gone with White for minimal investment for now. Investing almost 10.0 is way too much with Arsenal.

I'll help you. Give me your advice below 🙂

I'm not keen on the two 4.5 in midfield. I've got one 4.5, 5.5 and a couple of 6.0s and I think I'm light myself.

Downgrade Shaw and upgrade a 4.5 to Gray? Do you have any left ITB?

White and Coady to Livramento & Semedo.

      Grealish & Brownhill > Raph & Sarr

    I know there are a raft of RMTs out here and there is a fair amount of negativity around having three premiums but hear me out;

    Bachmann or Sanchez
    TAA - Semedo - Christensen
    Salah - Traore - Sarr - Gray
    CR7 - Lukaku - Antonio

    (Foster, White, Williams, 4.5 mid)

    The midfield is a little light. I get that, but;

    1) Let's say Traore/Sarr are a flop after a couple of gameweeks, a CR7 downgrade is coming in GW7 anyway, where you can accomodate the 7.7 midfielder

    2) A transfer merry-go-round around Lukaku/CR7/DCL is easy to do if you've got the big hitters in place already

    3) In GW7 once you downgrade CR7. Mount/James become easier to put in

    4) You can then captain Lukaku this GW whilst sitting behind the sofa during United vs Newcastle

i just dont think that Lukaku is likely to score more points over DCL the next 3 GWs
n the extra budget can be used elsewhere better

The Midfield is very lightweight - if it's me I would play White, downgrade gray to a 4.5 and see if you can Traore to Torres?

If Villa are without Martinez, Konsa, Mings defensively, Lukaku can have a field day this week.

I will Capt Salah next week.

That then leaves just GW6 to capt Ronaldo.

DCL is better pick than Lukaku GW6 and is captain material against a Norwich that can't defend crosses even in the chamionship.

I am starting to question the Ronaldo move for the next three GW's but then I also need to consider TeamValue as if Ronaldo does haul against Newcastle, who have a weak defence generally.

As i am not on a WC, and hits are involved, Team news is so vital this week (Good that Ole can't keep a straight face)

Too light at the back? WC team (Raph & Lukaku will be Jota & DCL for the next 2/3).

    Sanchez
    TAA, Christensen, White
    Salah, Raphinha, Benrahma, Gray
    Ronaldo, Antonio, Lukaku

    (Steele, Duffy, Sissoko, Livramento)
