Five tips for FPL managers on a Gameweek 4 Wildcard

The international break is almost over and normal service is about to resume. We have seen a lot of Wildcards being used over the last fortnight and looking at a lot of the drafts, I do have some bits and pieces of advice to give to those who are deploying the chip. My only intent with this article is to offer some food for thought to those hitting the ‘activate’ button.

For what it’s worth, I’m currently not on a Wildcard and I mentioned on this week’s episode of The FPL Wire why that is the case. We also discuss Wildcard picks in detail in case you want to check it out. Below is a small snippet.

Now that that is out of the way, let us start with the basics.

1) Take a Long-Term View for Defence

The best FPL defenders for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard 3

Make sure that while selecting your defenders, you’re looking at the Season Ticker for eight Gameweeks at the very least. I’d look at the ticker for ten Gameweeks, for what it’s worth. Defence is not where you want to be spending future transfers.

It is this reason why I’d probably ignore a Manchester United defender, for example. Yes, the fixtures in the next three Gameweeks are good for the Red Devils, but not so much after that. I know that United did very well in tough matches last season but I am still a firm believer in fixtures when it comes to defenders. I also think Manchester United are not as fixture proof at the back as perhaps a Chelsea or a Manchester City are.

2) Balancing Risk

This is a big point and applies to both defence and attack. Let’s talk about defence first.

If you’re betting on a defender like Andreas Christensen (£5.0m), you need to have sufficient cover on your bench. There is a slight Thiago Silva (£5.4m) threat and if you want to pick Christensen (I think he’s a really good selection), make sure that your fourth defender is a nailed-on £4.5m asset. The Dane could miss some games and you want sufficient cover should you want to go that way. Don’t be owning Christensen, Livramento (£4.1m) and another £4.0m defender. Simply put, that is asking for trouble.

The same applies in attack. The opportunities that exist with Diogo Jota (£7.6m), Mason Greenwood (£7.7m) and Ferran Torres (£7.1m) are great and there is a pretty big upside with all of them. But I would warn against owning all three. In case it doesn’t work out (because of the obvious risks attached) for all three, which is the worst-case scenario, suddenly you are panicking on a Wildcard. And this is assuming that you might not have other fires to put out in the future.

If you are on a Wildcard, one of the biggest advantages is being a few moves ahead of the chasing pack and having a risk-balanced wildcard squad means that you’re leaving yourself space to make opportunistic transfers in the future instead of always putting out fires and owning all three of the above names means that you are risking exactly that. I think it is okay to own two of them given your other picks are risk-free and there is definitely no problem with owning atleast one of them. Just make sure you’re balancing the risk in your squad and have a strong chunk of picks that you are happy to leave in your team for a long time. Don’t get drawn to all the shiny new toys and make sure your squad has a heavy selection of ‘sure things’.

3) The Chelsea Spots

Lukaku on target as Chelsea assets prosper at Arsenal 2

Chelsea are top of the Season Ticker from Gameweek 7 onwards for a long time. They look like they are going to assert a strong title challenge and a lot of Fantasy Premier League managers will be on Chelsea triple-ups from that point.

My current opinion is that Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) and Reece James (£5.6m) are the best two picks from the team at the moment. You can obviously start with Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) and switch later to Lukaku if you want to play the fixtures, and that is your call, but I would make sure that I have at least one Chelsea player if I was playing a Wildcard now. I’d go with James, and a strong playing defender in Gameweek 4 to play instead of him, or with Christensen.

The fact is that this season is still only three Gameweeks old and we don’t have enough information with regards to who the right Chelsea assets are. Ben Chilwell (£5.7m) is still falling in price and could be an absolute gem in a few weeks’ time (he’s the better pick versus Antonio Rudiger (£5.5m) if nailed), and there are also a couple of midfielders from Thomas Tuchel’s side who might make a strong case for inclusion in your team in the near future.

Keeping these factors in mind, I’d throw in one Blues player in my squad at the moment but I wouldn’t go more than two Chelsea assets in my Wildcard squad (assuming one of them is Lukaku) so that I leave space open for a third correct spot once we get time to process more information.

4) Don’t draw conclusions

FFS International: Best wildcard picks per position 1

Simply put, we’re very early in the season. I wouldn’t be bullish on any opinion formation this early into the campaign. This is the time to absorb as much information as possible, keep an open mind and try to assess how the season might play out. Now is not the point at which you put your neck on the line with any opinion. Now is just the time to be a sponge and let things marinate in your head.

The data and inferences that emerge out of Gameweek 4 will represent 25% of the information from 2021/22 as a whole. The point of me citing this is to let you know that we still don’t know a lot and the impact of emerging data every week is very significant, which is why you need to have an open mind and not form conclusions at this stage.

5) Go the extra yard and do some more research

Scout Notes 14

You are picking a team right now for a long time. The next Wildcard is pretty far away at the moment so take that extra time in selecting your players. Read more articles, check more historical data, find more quotes and information. Make sure you’re going that extra mile to play Devil’s advocate with each pick. Also, think a little macro and predict where you might be spending future transfers; if it feels like you’re planning too many moves, I would re-work my Wildcard to make sure you leave some open space to react to what happens in the next few Gameweeks.

A couple of other factors.

I do think you go for two premiums and not three for squad balance (I think one big-money midfielder and one similarly priced forward seems ideal at the moment). I personally would not give up on Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) in defence. His numbers look very encouraging early on and he is fully capable of another 200-point season.

That is it from me for this Gameweek. I don’t want to overwhelm you further, and just think of the above as just some ‘friendly’ advice. You obviously need to back your own thinking and conviction, and my intent is to only offer food for thought.

Until next time.

    (report, lost in old article)

Just did some quick back of the envelope evaluation on the value of going with three big hitters, based on RMT ratings for GWs 4 through 18. Looking at the four big hitters Salah, Lukaku and Ronaldo, their projected ppm value over those 15 GWs are at 7.87, 6.34 and 5.87 respectively. So Salah as expected should still be in our teams, but should we double up with Ronaldo and Lukaku? If you captain all you big hitters 1/3 of matches, the value of Ronaldo would be 7.6 and for Lukaku 8.4. If selecting only one of them to double up with Salah, their value would be 8.6 and 9.5. Now, looking at a few popular midfielders over same period, Raphina is at 9.15 ppm, Benrahma at 8.67, Sarr at 9.11 , Son at 7.6 and Mount at 8.09. Even more interesting is looking at popular defender picks. E.g. Dias is at 9.61 ppm, R.James at 11.25 ppm (even if not playig GW4), Shaw at 9.01 and Semedo at 8.89.

So based on this rather crude analysis, it supports that 2 big hitters is the best strategy, and use extra funds on premium defenders and low mid-price range mids.

Disclaimer: Wouldn't be surprised at all if Ronaldo significantly outscores his projected RMT points

what's the crude analysis saying for only 1 big hitter?

In that case, i picking Salah he would then be valued at 15.7 ppm, and you should assess Ronaldo and Lukaku based on their non-captained values 5.87 and 6.34, which is lower than every other relevant pick - not factorting in budget. But I'd still go with two big hitters, both for the reduced risk, and potential of effectively increasing ppm value if you can pick the right one for armband more often than not. And there is ofc the thing that Salah is a midfielder and Ronald/Lukaku are forwards so no direct swap in case of injury

They're not really where the value is. But just to pick a little bit, it's doesn't support that three big hitters isn't the best strategy, it supports that three big hitters isn't the optimum 11. Three big hitters could still play part of an optimum 'strategy' as the game is more complicated than who is the best value

You really need to nail the captaincies for three big hitters to pay off. If not captained, they have to be assessed based on ppm within given budget

        1. Pacer.

ppm is one consideration amongst a whole host of considerations. there are reasons that premiums strip past 200 regularly, whereas players like Torres, jota, Benrahma, Raphina, sarr, mount etc end up with scores that aren't actually very good value. If we just went on ppm value we'd all be playing 5 at the back

          1. Pompel
            • 10 Years
            2 years, 7 months ago

The real reason we don't play 5 at the back is that, unlike for forwards and mids, a god selection of high value defenders can be found in the 4.5-5.5m price range, leaving extra budget up front (i.e. total points over ppm).

But you are right in the sense that RMT is inacurate and probably underrates some of the big hitters and overvalues some of the mid priced ones

This is so heavily based on RMT being correct and extremely accurate which we've seen it not to be for all player picks in the first three GWs.

We do know it is quite inaccurate (Sterling RMT ratings last year prime example)- hence my disclaimer. But I still think the RMT gives a clear indication as to the conclusion I'm drawing - but feel free to disagree ofc

No there is merit in your analysis. I also use RMT to create the foundation of my teams. For a long time I've also sat on a 2 premium strategy, my problem is wanting to secure a 7.5-7.7 midfield slot however Jota, Greenwood, Torres are risks and Mount won't come in for a few weeks for me.

So if I cut back in that area I can afford the three premium strategy.

That's a valid point for sure. If you have spare budget because you can identify replace some mids/defs lower priced ones with same value, spending rest of budget becomes a case of total points rather than ppm. But apart from your captains, it's still a matter of maximizing overall squad ppm within budget

If you want to go Loco on value - throw together a 5-2-3 with Salah perma-cap 😆

      Mendy
      TAA, Shaw, Digne, Robbo, Dias
      Salah, Raphinha
      DCL, Antonio, Bamford
      (4.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5)

Still about 2.0 ITB too that you could either pad the bench with or upgrade Raphinha to an 8.5 if you really wanted - but he doesn't need upgraded tbf

Haha, your example is probably a better in terms of RMT projected ppm, but in practice I think having the ability two swap aptaincy between two big hitters will net more points, and reduce risk of getting caught out in case of no shows

I need one of Gray, Greenwood or Benrahma to rise by .1m tonight so that I can afford this on WC...

    Sa (4.0)
    TAA, Semedo, Tierney (Williams, Livra)

    Ronaldo, Antonio, DCL

    Fingers crossed!

It was between shaw and a 4.5 GK or Semedo/Tierney and a 5.0.

If I were sure De Gea was nailed with Henderson returning to fitness soon then I’d maybe go for him over Sa. Might switch for Uniteds fixture run in GW14/15 anyway

Have 2fts. Thinking Son + ASM > Jota + DCL but to be honest really not sure what to do...

My team at the moment is:

    Bachmann
    Shaw - Coufal - Cancelo
    Greenwood - Son - Salah - Grealish - Saka
    Antonio - Toney

subs: Martinez - ASM - Tsimikas - Veltman

I’ve downed tools the last fortnight and just looking at my team now. 200k OR so I’ve had worse starts but now I’m wondering if I can get away with a -4 as it’s too late to WC (possibly?)

    Sanchez
    TAA Dier Coufal (White Tsimi)
    Salah Bruno Greenwood Benrahma (Biss)
    Ings Antonio Richarlison

Thinking about giving Rich a last shot and doing Ings/Bruno > Ronaldo/Jota for -4 - how does that look?

    More or less bottomed (aside from Daniyal's great feedback), so reposting;

    I know there are a raft of RMTs out here and there is a fair amount of negativity around having three premiums but hear me out;

    Bachmann or Sanchez
    TAA - Semedo - Christensen
    Salah - Traore - Sarr - Gray
    CR7 - Lukaku - Antonio

    (Foster, White, Williams, 4.5 mid)

    The midfield is a little light. I get that, but;

    1) Let's say Traore/Sarr are a flop after a couple of gameweeks, a CR7 downgrade is coming in GW7 anyway, where you can accomodate the 7.7 midfielder

    2) A transfer merry-go-round around Lukaku/CR7/DCL is easy to do if you've got the big hitters in place already

    3) In GW7 once you downgrade CR7. Mount/James become easier to put in

    4) You can then captain Lukaku this GW whilst sitting behind the sofa during United vs Newcastle

    1. Pompel
      • 10 Years
      2 years, 7 months ago

      1) Have you got the balls to ditch Ronaldo if he gets off to a good starts and reaches 60%+ ownership?

      2) Bound to fail you'll need FTs to put out other fires, and price rises will put a spanner in the works

      3) See above

      4) Lukaku could easily be the best option looking this GW in isolation

This is the only real issue I have with this, not aimed specifically at you Viva as I've seen it in a lot of WC teams, but what will you do if you find Ronaldo is undroppable? Knowing it's Ronaldo and what he might do in the next few it could very well happen, and the other 2 premiums might be the very same so you might find yourself stuck if you need to make other moves but can't afford to. Will you downgrade TAA?

But that's the thing though right? If Ronaldo is undroppable, Salah is doing Salah and Lukaku is my captain pick from GW7 onwards, then the team will be taking care of itself.

          - Semedo has a downgrade option in Coady/Marcal/Kilman/Alt Nouri. He'll likely go back up to 5.0/5.1 with Wolves run
          - If Arsenal start playing, you'd have to imagine ESR will have a roll in that, that's another downgrade option from Sarr
          - Antonio won't last forever, there's a downgrade option of Jimenez if Wolves' projection is right, or just change formation if I knock him down to a 4.5

        1) Yeah, he was going out in GW7 for Lukaku in my two premium plan in any case
2 & 3) Potentially, but CR7 is the most expensive player in the game and taking him out can accomodate any other option that I might want (James, Mount etc)
        4) Doesn't my set up just back my point?

Whilst i agree with you lateriser, reece james will be the best Chelsea option moving forward, i have to disagree that going James over Shaw is a good move. While James is suspended for Chelseas easiest fixture in the next 3, followed by Spurs away, and Man City, Shaw has Newcastle + Villa home.

I think the clear move is just saving 2FT’s in GW6 and moving to 2x Chelsea players in GW7.

You could even hold CR7 for Everton home and move to Lukaku in GW8.

True, but Paraguay wanted Miggy banned. So either Newcastle and the Paraguay FA have resolved this or a wider EPL/FIFA decision has been made.

    Sanchez - Bachmann
    TAA - Shaw - Tierney - Christensen - Amartey
    Salah - Rafinha - Benrahma - Gray - Gilmour
    DCL - Ronaldo - Antonio

    Last question:

    A. TAA + Gilmour
    B. Ayling + Jota

WC pick. Longer term plan to switch Shaw and Ronny to James and Lukaku from Gw7
    Thoughts?

    Sanchez / (Steele)
    TAA / Shaw / Christensen / (Ayling) / (Amartey)
    Gray / Salah / Grenwood / Jota / (Raphina)
    Ron / Jiminez / Dennis

Have 2 free transfers. Thinking Son + ASM > Jota + DCL but to be honest really not sure what to do... Worried about not having Bruno , Lukaku , Ronaldo or Kane!

My team at the moment is:

    Bachmann
    Shaw - Coufal - Cancelo
    Greenwood - Son - Salah - Grealish - Saka
    Antonio - Toney

subs: Martinez - ASM - Tsimikas - Veltman

Yep it’s so tough, Sarr is a better finisher but Traore is looking great this season!

I would just take Ings out, in fact that is what I have done but for Jiminez. I want to see how Ronaldo plays before getting him in.

Same here, and I'm contemplating that exact move to roll a transfer. Bruno's ownership needs to cliffdive before I consider dumping him.

    Pick one:

    A- Torres
    B- Jota

    1- Semedo
    2- Tierney
