Scout Picks

FPL Gameweek 4 Scout Picks features Chelsea triple-up and Bruno over Ronaldo

As they prepare to face Aston Villa on Saturday, three Chelsea players form the spine of our Gameweek 4 Scout Picks.

After Sam, Az, Neale and Tom submitted their Scout Squad selections earlier this week, we have chosen our best players ahead of tomorrow’s 11.00 BST deadline.

We line up in a 4-4-2 formation and come in at £82.9m, just under our £83.0m budget.

GOALKEEPER

David Raya (£4.6m) is our chosen goalkeeper ahead of Brentford’s home fixture against Brighton and Hove Albion in Gameweek 4.

The Bees stopper has already accumulated 17 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, picking up additional save points against both Arsenal and Aston Villa.

He’s also on top of the Baseline Bonus Points System (BBPS), in part due to his distribution when playing out from the back.

Thomas Frank’s side have restricted their opponents to just two big chances so far, and with Albion up next, will be confident of another shut-out in Gameweek 4.

DEFENDERS

The best FPL defenders for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard 3

Luke Shaw (£5.5m) may not have quite hit his 2020/21 heights so far this season, but still ranks amongst the top five defenders for chances created, and carries significant assist potential against Newcastle United this weekend.

His crossing ability from both dead-ball situations and open-play attacks will be key, while United’s clean sheet prospects look a whole lot stronger with the addition of Raphael Varane (£5.5m).

Lucas Digne (£5.4m) helped Everton record their first shut-out of the campaign against Brighton last time out, and is sure to benefit from new manager Rafa Benitez’s approach, which is largely based around crossing.

Up next for the Toffees is Burnley, who have conceded 15 headed attempts so far this season, more than any other side in the division. With corner-taking duties another route to points, Digne could be in for a big week.

Antonio Rudiger (£5.5m) is the first of our Chelsea picks. The German international has started and completed 90 minutes in all three Premier League matches this season, while opponents Aston Villa have managed just nine shots on target across their opening three fixtures. Add in at least a couple of missing first-teamers, and it’s no surprise that Chelsea top the bookies’ odds for a clean sheet this week.

Marcal (£4.5m) takes up the final spot in our backline. Over the opening three Gameweeks, he has attempted 19 crosses from the left-flank (the joint-fifth highest among all defenders), while Wolves have conceded just 20 shots in the box despite some tougher fixtures.

MIDFIELDERS

Captain Sensible – Gameweek 1 5

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is the first of our two premium midfield picks this week, having already combined two goals, two assists and 30 FPL points this season. The Egyptian’s total of 13 goal attempts ranks second amongst all players, while he has also supplied a league-leading three big chances for his team-mates.

Opponents Leeds United have tightened up at Elland Road in 2021, but Salah, who is just one goal shy of reaching a century in the Premier League, will surely fancy his chances against Marcelo Bielsa’s backline.

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer planting seeds of doubts in our heads around how many minutes Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) will be afforded against Newcastle United, we’ve opted for Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) in this week’s Scout Picks XI. Despite back-to-back blanks, United’s playmaker hit an open-play hat-trick to earn a career-high 20 FPL point haul in his last Old Trafford appearance.

Mason Mount (£7.5m) has enjoyed a productive start to the season, bagging assists against Crystal Palace and Arsenal. Amongst all midfielders, he ranks top for expected assists (xA), with this weekend’s opponents – Aston Villa – missing first-choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m).

Adama Traore (£6.0m) has been the topic of many a Fantasy discussion over the international break, with Wolverhampton Wanderers about to embark on a kind run of fixtures. While his end product is perhaps in question, he’s top for chances created and joint-second for shots amongst all FPL midfielders from Gameweeks 1 to 3.

FORWARDS

Lukaku on target as Chelsea assets prosper at Arsenal

Passed fit by manager Thomas Tuchel earlier this afternoon, Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) looks like an excellent option for our forwards lines this week. The Belgian has started well at Chelsea, scoring against Arsenal in Gameweek 2, and has also reacked up 10 goal attempts and nine shots in the box across his opening couple of appearances.

West Ham United’s Michail Antonio (£7.9m) is the top-scoring player in FPL so far, and is one of just three players to have scored in each of the first three rounds. Opponents Southampton have kept just one clean sheet in their last 24 attempts in the Premier League, while West Ham have won six of their last seven meetings between them.

THE CAPTAIN

Who are the best captain options for FPL Gameweek 36+?

We choose the Scout Picks captain using a four-way vote between our Scout Squad pundits.

Bruno Fernandes was handed the armband by our quartet this time, with Romelu Lukaku picking up the vice-captaincy.

COMMUNITY CHAMPION

FPL Gameweek 2 round-up: Sunday goals, assists, bonus and injuries 4

Each week, one of the Fantasy Football Scout community takes on the Scout Picks by pitting their chosen XI against ours.

The Community Member who beats our team by the largest margin will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Moderators and Contributors League for the following season.

Our champion is week BobMcMayday, who has gone with a maverick 5-2-3 line-up of Pickford; Tierney, White, Shaw, Reguilon, Duffy; Salah, Jota; Aubameyang, Kane, Lukaku (c).

The Scout Picks are 3-0 up on the community this season.

What the chance of Lukaku outscoring Ronaldo this GW? When Ole said he will not start, I think Lukaku could easily outscore him

It could go either way, even if Ronaldo doesn’t start he may get Greenwood/Cavani type returns like they did last year coming off the bench. Would you captain Lukaku?

Cavani was the only player Ole would have put in ahead of CR7 - due to all the persuasion they did to get him to sign the 1 year extension at the end of the season when he had planned to go home...

He won’t be starting Jesse Lingard or Martial ahead of Ronnie at all at all (unless Ronnie gets a freak injury this morning or this afternoon)

Sancho left, Greenwood right, Ronnie up top

          Martial, Lingard benched

You keep naming players who havnt started all season as reasons why Ronaldo will start.

Surely your argument should start with why Ronaldo starts ahead of current starters rather than why squad players wont keep him out.

I think he starts btw, just that none of the players you mentioned have anything to do with it.

He can easily start from the bench without any of the players you mentioned starting

“You keep naming players who havnt started all season as reasons why Ronaldo will start.“ Martial has already started this season though?

Cavani was the only danger to a Ronaldo start - (because of the work that was done to persuade Cavani to stay)

Ole isn’t starting Lingard instead of him, and Martial blew his chance after his Southampton performance (where he started btw)

Martial 1 in 3 is not starting. That is squad player numbers.

Starters have played all season unless like sancho there were fitness reasons.

Greenwood up top. Fernandes ten. Pogba and sancho on flanks is a front four of starters.

United dominated their last home match with this formation.

No one cares about cavani, martial or lingard. They have nothing to do with Ronaldo

Mate, don’t even start with this shite 😆

                  “Martial starting is not starting”

This is like “Liverpool have 8 centrebacks injured”, “Salah had the best game I’ve ever seen” with two penalties against leeds, and “Daka didn’t sign for Liverpool because he was promised he’d start for Leicester” 😆

You know your comments get deleted when you exit a current discussion to bring up old things only you believe. Has happened the last 5 times you have done this.

My comments are valid. Anyone trying to read into cavani not being in squad meaning Ronaldo starts should pay attention. If Ronaldo is replacing cavani as you suggest, then he starts from the bench where cavani has been sat all season. As you were

😆 If you’re so ashamed of being called on the absolute nonsense you’re prone to spouting, then may I suggest you stop spouting said nonsense rather than asking for deletion of references to the nonsense?

“You keep naming players who havnt started all season as reasons why Ronaldo will start.“ Martial has already started this season

“Greenwood up top. Fernandes ten. Pogba and sancho on flanks is a front four of starters….Greenwood started on the right vs Southampton (and should do so again to facilitate Ronaldo)…Pogba started central midfield vs Wolves (and should do so again unless McTominay has recovered faster than expected)

Had Cavani been fit and available for selection (which he’s not) he would have been the only danger to Ronaldo starting - Ole won’t put Martial or Lingard in at his expense

                      As you were 😉

I never asked for anything to be deleted.

I dont think mods are fan of the way these discussions have gone in he past so they have deleted them. Unfortunately you seem hellbent on taking them that way. I cant stop you.

How did the southhampton game go where Greenwood started on the right?

The best United have been all season was Greenwood up top. Bruno in the 10 and pogba advanced. Sancho instead is even better.

Midfield being an issue is a much better argument for Ronaldo. Well done

Sure you didn’t bud, sure you didn’t 😉

I don’t think anyone is a fan of the way these discussions have gone - you keep posting things that are wrong (Martial *has* started, Greenwood has played on the right as well as up top, Pogba has played in midfield as well as LWF)

If Cavani had been fit he was being lined up for his first start (Ole rates him incredibly highly, and had the board push very strongly to persuade Cavani to stay at the end of last season when he had planned to go back home)

Cavani missed the first 2x gameweeks with Covid quarantine, and came straight back into the squad for Wolves, playing nearly the full second half from the bench, and unsurprisingly improving things dramatically when he came on

Ole loves him, and after the promises that were made to get him to sign, followed by the unexpected CR7 availability, then rounded off with the loss of the #7, he would have been the only one Ole would have put in ahead of Ronnie (and even then it wouldn’t have been a sure thing)

With Cavani out - Ronaldo starts

                        You’re welcome 🙂

Is it worth a -4 for
    Son/Wilson/Toney > Traore/Cr7/Dennis?
Means keeping Bruno for a week and if things go pear shaped and Bruno and CR7 don’t look good together I can drop Bruno next week and spread the funds up until I WC

You wouldn’t be able to tell Bruno and Ronnie don’t look good together from just one game, but either way it’s ld detrimental to have both anyway

Should've clarified I meant more to see how Bruno looks with Ronaldo in the side, if he truly loses pens and plays a roll similar to his for Portugal then he'd be gone next week and likely Dennis becomes Bamford or something even if it means unfortunately another -4

Think I’ll have to sell, his next few fixtures aren’t great anyways and although he has scored well he won’t be the only goal scorer in a 1-0 every week I’d presume. But who knows he could be out for a few weeks and drop in value on your bench or miraculously return soon

    A. Bruno Odegaard Lukaku Bissouma (-8)

    Right.
It’s decision time. Been sitting on my hands for two weeks now trying to be calm and wait for more info. Gladly no significant price rises/falls to make a decent wc team imposssible.
However, I find myself a bit uninterested in using the wc.
Frankly, much depends on this: is Ronaldo going to start? I know what Ole said, but what do you think?

Is Ronaldo starting from the bench?
(And if you want, are you using your wc or saving for later?)

I've played mine which was definitely the wrong decision, hold if you can, Ron will be bench knowing my luck as I've captained him.

We don't know if he will start. I brought him in alongside Jota for the injured Son and Wilson but if it wasn't for those injuries there is no way I would have sold either of those players and I gladly would have gone without Ronaldo. As it stands, I have the captaincy on Salah so I'm already preparing for Ronaldo to not start.

    3. Holmes

Decent possibility of him starting from bench but we cant rule out a possibility of start either. If you are going to WC just for the sake of Ronaldo, I would avoid.

I'm not using WC, need more information on likes of Bruno/Benrahma etc.

No plan to activate the wildcard any time before gwk15. Ideally gwk19. Brought in Ronaldo and he's my captain, not sure why he wouldn't start.

        Cheers all for your input.

I, like many of you told, think I’ll risk going without Ronaldo this week even though that qickly became the plan when he signed. Before that I was all set on just doing Ings to DCL. Even saved the needed 0.3 mil for it (suspected DCL would rise more). And while I do think Ronaldo will start, I want to follow my original plan. See how it all works out.

Thinking on this now, I think the main factor pushing to wc is fear. Fear of missing out or giving my ML mates a week or twos edge. Nope. Time to man up and keep a cool head.

Thank you all! Enjoy the next gw!

          Sanchez
          Coufal TAA Shaw
          Salah Bruno Mason Benny
          Dennis Antonio (c) DCL

          4.0 Tsimi Raphinha Livra

Giving Dennis a shot and Michael has the form atm for a captaincy!

Will do Bruno/Toney to Raphinha/Lukaku in the short term, and then Lukaku to Ronaldo around GW12.

      For the long(ish) term

Why does it need to be for the long term? I don't think you can rely on either player for more than 3 or 4 GW's. If they don't bring in the points (and they might not), you will have to sell.

That's fair. Obviously theyll be a contender to be transfered out. But until GW8 I have all my transfers accounted for (in theory). So more like over the next 5 GWs.

The reason why I believe he will start is because with what we have heard so far Ronaldo is in good shape. So if that's true then if he does not start then it feels like he is not as good as Lukaku. Since Lukaku started his debut rightaway in quite similar way.

But of course you never now for sure. Usually yeah sub from the bench are the way to go for new signings. But we are talking about Ronaldo here who seems to be dit and ready to start.

            What’s my best bet here?

            A. Bruno, Toney > Mount/Grealish, Ronaldo -4 (352) 1.7/1.2 ITB
            B. Bruno, Perica > Gilmour, Ronaldo -4 (343) 2.8 ITB
            C. Save FT

B definitely the better move on paper, but C gives me better team structure as I look to bring in DCL/Bamford/Jimenez in the near future

            Better 3? Currently on B

            A) Sanchez, Rudiger, Traore
            B) Sa, Christensen, Sarr

Wavered for a moment, but I think I'm ready to go big rather than play it safe. Captaining Ron-Ron. Not having a Chelsea player this GW might hurt, but short of shipping Greenwood for Mount I don't see a way to do it.

Meslier (set and forget, decent run of fixtures apart from this GW)
            TAA - Shaw - Marcal
            Salah - Jota - Torres - Traore - Greenwood (v)
            Ron (c) - Antonio

            Steer, Livra, Richardson, Omobamidele

            Last tweaks:

            1. Need a set-and-forget GK and none of the 4.5 options look appealing. Even went so far as to consider Leno with his fixtures (then I could afford an at least partially-playing Williams instead of Omo), but I just can't trust Arsenal's backline
            2. Is Traore my best 6.0 bet or should I get Trincao instead?

That's almost my exact team except i fancy a punt on Fornals as my 5th instead of the Wolves boys. It might just be recency bias but Wolves don't have any clinical edge to their attack. I need to see it first.

Yeah, Fornals was my other option, but I have Antonio already and Wolves do have a decent run of fixtures coming up. But I'm really wary of Traore considering he doesn't produce actual returns very often, even at that attractive price point.

              Great team, i have
Sanchez White Benrahma Williams Scarlett over your
Meslier Marcal Traore Omo Richardson(any reason for him)

Just poked my mouse cursor over the first 4.5 attacker I could find. Why Scarlett? I'd rather waste a Burnley slot than a Spurs one, not that I fancy having three from either team.

Was pretty set to do this (Ings, Bruno > Ronaldo, Torres) to give me:
            Sanchez, Foster
            TAA, Shaw, Digne, Livra, Manquillo
            Salah, TORRES, Raphinha, Greenwood, Bissouma
            RONALDO, Toney, Antonio

Seeing report that Ronaldo will play, but may not start has me second guessing. Still worth the moves? Ron would become Lukaku in gw7, fwiw.

Not owning Ronaldo, Lukaku, Jota and Greenwood this week is scary.

Any suggestions, 1Ft, 1.4 itb was just thinking Ings to DCL?

            Sanchez
            TAA Shaw White (Ayling Tsimikas)
            Fernandes Salah Benrahma Torres (Gilmour)
            Toney Ings Antonio
