FPL Gameweek 4 round-up: Saturday goals, assists, bonus and injuries

Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) bagged a double-digit haul on his second Manchester United debut as the Portuguese veteran’s 2.2 million owners were rewarded for their investment on Saturday.

No player has racked up more FPL points than the United number seven in Gameweek 7 so far, although Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) went stride for stride with his fellow premium forward and matched that 13-point tally.

The Red Devils’ 4-1 thrashing of Newcastle United was one of eight Premier League matches that took place on a busy Saturday, the main talking points of which we’ll discuss in this our first Gameweek 4 round-up.

Our usual, more detailed Scout Notes will follow for all of the day’s games but in the meantime, our resurrected Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, PROJECTED BONUS

KEY FPL TALKING POINTS

  • Deprived of the services of Son Heung-min (£10.1m) and Steven Bergwijn (£6.0m) and lining up in a diamond formation, Tottenham Hotspur managed only two shots in the whole of their clash with Crystal Palace (none in the first half) and have the worst expected goals tally (0.09) in Gameweek 4 so far. The Eagles, by contrast, topped Saturday’s xG table with 3.00.
  • Odsonne Edouard (£6.5m) scored twice on his debut and Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) seemingly consolidated his position as Palace’s first-choice penalty taker, stepping up to take the Eagles’ spot-kick with Luka Milivojevic (£5.4m) on the field. Of just as much interest from an FPL perspective was the performance of budget midfielder Conor Gallagher (£5.5m,), who delivered two attacking returns for the second Gameweek in a row. On free-kicks and corners, he was involved in nine of the 18 shots that Palace had.
  • Mason Greenwood (£7.7m), Paul Pogba (£7.7m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.5m) are all set to be tied on 31 points in FPL if the bonus points are delivered as expected. No midfielder has more this season.
  • Shane Duffy (£4.2m) is now the joint-best ‘value’ player in the game, returning 5.2 points per million spent. He was part of a Brighton defence that kept their second shut-out in four matches in a 1-0 win over Brentford.
  • Last season’s best two backlines, Manchester City and Chelsea, are now joint-top along with Spurs for clean sheets this season (three each) despite the pair being in the bottom half of our Season Ticker over the opening four Gameweeks. Chelsea struggled from set plays against a lively Aston Villa, however, and they’ve now allowed 17 chances from dead-ball situations to be conceded over the last two Gameweeks.
  • Pep Guardiola named an unchanged starting XI for the third successive match, the first time he has ever done that at City. It’s safe to assume that more changes will be in the offing once the Champions League starts in midweek and indeed Thomas Tuchel’s tinkering has already begun in earnest, with the benched Mason Mount (£7.5m) and Andreas Christensen (£5.0m) two of six changes that the Chelsea manager made.
  • Dean Smith paired Danny Ings (£8.0m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.3m) in the same side for the first time, turning to a 3-5-2 to accommodate both strikers. Watkins was heavily involved and registered three times as many touches of the ball than his strike partner, who was hooked midway through the second half. Watkins also had six shots to Ings’ one.
  • Marcal‘s (£4.5m) two attacking returns in Wolves’ 2-0 win over Watford were his first ever in FPL. The left-back banked two assists despite not creating a single chance in Opta’s eyes: a Marcal cross was first turned into his own net by Francisco Sierralta (£4.4m), before the Portuguese defender’s blocked shot was converted by debutant substitute Hee-Chang Hwang (£5.5m). Marcal and fellow wing-back Nelson Semedo (£4.9m) had three of the six big chances that Wolves created.
  • Arsenal have had 52 attempts on goal in their two meetings with non-big six sides this season. Thirty of those came in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Norwich City.

INJURIES AND BANS

FPL Gameweek 4 round-up: Saturday goals, assists, bonus and injuries 7

Michail Antonio (£8.0m) and Japhet Tanganga (£4.5m) will both miss Gameweek 5 through suspension after being sent off for two bookable offences on Saturday.

On suspension tightrope watch, meanwhile, Paul Pogba (£7.7m) has reached three yellow cards after just four Gameweeks. Another two bookings before United have played a total of 19 league matches and he’ll be suspended for one game.

Brighton’s win came at a cost, with Adam Webster (£4.5m) limping off with a hamstring problem – something that may aid Shane Duffy‘s (£4.2m) chances of staying in this Albion side, however.

The Seagulls were also without Pascal Gross (£6.0m) and Enock Mwepu (£5.9m), who were both self-isolating.

“I need to see but he said [Webster] felt something there but we will see how bad that is. Enock was pinged from a flight and Pascal is just self-isolating.” – Graham Potter

Edinson Cavani (£8.4m) missed Manchester United’s win over Newcastle with a knock that isn’t expected to keep him out for long, while Rob Holding (£4.3m) was absent from Arsenal’s win over Norwich with a bruised knee.

Son Heung-min (£10.1m) and Steven Bergwijn (£6.0m) were absent from Spurs’ defeat at Crystal Palace, while Eric Dier (£4.6m) was forced off after just 11 minutes of the loss at Selhurst Park.

Nuno Espirito Santo was, as ever, a bit thin on details after the game:

“I don’t know. [Son] doesn’t look well. Stevie, let’s wait and see this week. Hopefully, they will improve and be available for the next game, let’s see.

“Let’s wait and see [on Dier].” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Among the more notable returnees on Saturday were Jonny Evans (£5.4m) and Jannik Vestergaard (£4.9m), who shared 90 minutes of game-time between them.

Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) and Phil Foden (£7.9m) were unused substitutes for Manchester City.

Callum Wilson (£7.4m), missing with a thigh injury, will be “touch and go” to feature in Gameweek 5, meanwhile.

FPL OWNERSHIP AND CAPTAINCY – TOP 10K

Ronaldo’s ownership shot up from nought to 65% in the top 10k over the last fortnight and he was the most-captained player among these leading managers, with just over half handing him the armband.

Ronaldo and Lukaku were the only players in the above ‘most popular’ list to bank double-digit hauls so far but the Belgian is a veritable differential by comparison.

While almost 99% of the leading FPL managers had to stomach Antonio’s red card, over 7% endured the double ignominy of captaining him.

There was a big spike in Wildcard usage in Gameweek 4, with over 17% of the top 10k deploying the chip.

The Brighton goalkeeper double-up, bargain-bin defenders and ‘out of position’ mid-price midfielders are features of the template squad, with over 85% also opting for Ronaldo.

People planning on selling Shaw for a Chelsea defender around GW7?

United keep most of their clean sheets against tougher opposition.

      Yes, I had noted this.
I think it is more the case of someone like R James being able to get higher hauls through this period against the weaker opposition (attacking returns).

Not me. I've been planning a Back 3 of TAA, Shaw and James, but Wolves are causing me to think. I might go Back 4 with those 3 and Semedo (who I've got), or even get Marcal and save money over James if he's going to be rotated.

Yes, for the sake of team balance I'm only willing to have two top defenders. So thats TAA and one other. Shaw fills that role for now and is an easy swap for the fixture swing with James in GW7.

I moved Shaw out for Rudiger during the last day of my wildcard, and so far it's worked out (thanks to Mendy, what a beast). What swayed me was Lateriser's article about thinking ahead on a WC. I have no issue with Shaw, but i had recognized that i definitely want Chelsea defenders, and it saves me the transfer in a couple GWs. And i still might grab Reece James as well.

It is early to get rid of a great player in Shaw, but i know what i want in my defense in a few weeks, and being on a wildcard made the choice make sense for me. And, it immediately paid dividends.

This is good logic for anyone on a wild card. My questions would be, do you have Lukaku instead of Ronaldo?

No, i'm on the CR7 train for now. I have no idea if i will switch to Lukaku after the City match, but i think it largely depends on if United and Ronaldo gel well and push on from here. Opposition will get much tougher than a flimsy Newcastle.

Another factor is that Chelsea are a better side overall. They are filled with confidence and resolve and can beat anyone in the world, frankly. Lukaku makes them positively frightening.

I guess it makes sense to have a longer term view with defenders compared to attacking players. After-all, we generally want to spend more transfers on attackers for the good fixture/form runs. It will be interesting to see how United gel in tougher games. Ronaldo has fitted in well so far.

How has Ronaldo’s price not gone up when ownership risen from
    0-32 %? Similarly Lukaku from 0-23%.

      I understand it completely.

FPL is a game for the masses. They want to give most people the chance to get them at their original price - much like they would if they were here gw1.
They’re waiting for their ownership % to normalize to create the baseline from which to make price changes.

FPL towers gain nothing by increasing their value early and helping those who are chasing rises. They want more people to get them - it drives interest.

Exactly this. It would be stupid if there were price rises prior to GW1 so why would there be price rises for new players prior to their first GW.

I think there’s a couple of factors behind it.
      1) a lot of people activated wildcards to get them
      2) they may be blocked from rising until after first gw
      3) I think more fundamentally, the fpl algorithm links price to the fundamental value of CR7 and perhaps ownership of 40/50pct. So then just turning up and scoring a goal or two doesn’t change their fundamental value as much as a 6m forward doing the same

The question is whether the new gameweek commences from the deadline, or from after the last match in the GW.

        1. RogDog_jimmy
          • 3 Years

Yep I think they’ll start moving after Monday’s game. It I wouldn’t be surprised if that point becomes the “baseline” from which future changes happen.

I’m happy about it having neither of them. Just trying to make sense of it.

Presumably from deadline. However it would take a few days for Ronaldo's price to rise because it has to be a certain % increase from his ownership at deadline.

      1. Think of TAA in the same group as the best 7.5 mids. He's more nailed than Greenwood, Jota, Torres, Mount etc and will outscore them.

      2. Gallagher - he's nailed and got plenty more in his locker. Kovacic got his goal for this season already and will be rotated with Kante and Jorginho (and Saul if he gets up to speed)

      1. Almost certainly not. He's his own position. For his price, he's almost indispensible. Don't think of him as a defender.

      2. Isn't Kovacic more of a holding player? Gallagher sounds good but i would need to look him and Palace more. So i don't really know.

I just did Pogba to Jota because Ole started playing him CMF from last week and thats very bad to watch .. the points he got because he's a world class player but the position is not promising ..as long as he is not in the attacking area he's a trap ... For Greenwood i s more advanced but plays less minutes than pogba .. i personally like Pogba more from those two but expect frustration from Ole.

7 assists in 4 does suggest a potential pattern emerging, but Greenwood is too far forward for me personally. He's in my team until he gets injured, loses all form, or Ole straight up gives his position away.

Time to get rid of westham attackers? After a fantastic start they have come crashing down to earth. Same old westham ,So unreliable

    vs Dynamo (Europa)
    vs MU (PL)
    vs mu (league cup)
    vs lee (PL)
    vs Rapid Vienna (Europa)
    vs BRE (PL)

This means westham would play 6 games in next 23 days. Antonio hamstrings will be at risk and Vlasic could eat into Benrahma minutes.

Antonio's the real problem as they don't have a backup striker. Might need to shove Bowen or someone up top. In midfield they've brought in decent cover. Having said that, i'm planning on leaving Benrahma on the bench until I ship him for Mount anyway.

Antonio to Bamford/DCL is an easy and low risk move

However im finding it hard to find a solid replacement for Benrahma. Not sold on Sarr or Traore. Can go upto Torres but not willing to play pep roulette. Can afford Jota with a hit

Gallagher is interesting but have to wait until palace fixtures clears. Any recommendations?

I guess Antonio will be fine since I don't see him starting in Europa after Dynamo game. Benrahma, who knows, should see rotation but whether he gets benched in Europa or PL remains to be seen.

If on WC, I would get rid of both. With transfers, you can keep Antonio and get rid of Benrahma.

      Well there are options.

Vlasic, Yarmolenko, Bowen, Benrahma, Fornals, Lanzini, Antonio.

Effectively for 4 spots in the team. And if they go five at the back add Masuaka.

So I think there’s rotation ahead - though I would not be surprised to see a straight B team in Europe.

I think Antonio is still a great option at his price - just ride fixtures with the other forwards.

Westham played out of their skins to qualify for europe last season. Surely they will take it seriously no?

Serious yes - but also PL is serious too, it’s why we got Vlasic, Kral, Zouma and Areola. Last year some of the secondary players played a real role and I expect it again this year.
Our group is pretty easy too - so maybe it won’t be too stressful.

Goal has to be Europe qualification again plus a decent Europe run this year.

fair enough. guess moyes will look to balance it out and give a good go in both competition. hence rotation and squad freshness is key

I was thinking of Benrahma to Traore or Gallagher but i think I'll keep and bench him until GW7 and Mount.

I do think West Ham will take Europa seriously, however previous PL clubs with thin squads - Burnley and Wolves, suffered badly until they got knocked out. I think Hammers have strengthened enough at the back and midfield but that is a worrying hole up top.

Gotta go cheap with Arsenal until they settle down. Tomiyasu would be my pick now I've seen him play. Like Gabriel and Tierney, he will get the odd goal / assist / bonus, so better value at 4.5

    Leaning towards

    Bruno + Perica > Raphinha + DCL (2 fts)

    Leaves 2.9 itb.

    Sanchez (4.0)
    TAA, Shaw, Ayling (Duffy, Livramento)
    Salah, Greenwood, Jota, Benrahma, Raphinha
    Jimenez, DCL (Antonio)

Feels good. Money to upgrade to Chelsea defense soon or a couple of moves can get me to Lukaku easily too.

Haha. I don’t like him particularly but that’s irrelevant to FPL for me.

Don’t love his fixture all that much and want to get to Lukaku for gw7/8.
Currently prefer Salah + 1x fwd big hitter.
        That may change.

I didn’t see the value in getting him over Bruno and losing transfers that are planned to move to Chelsea fixtures.

It may not work out but I can’t say it’s failed so far. Bruno did well and I have Salah (c) to go this week - I may still come out on top.

Now I have 2fts to deal with Antonio red and still keep my plan.
