Scout Notes

Son and Dier injury latest as budget FPL midfielder Gallagher again impresses

We begin our more detailed Scout Notes of the weekend’s matches with a look at the main talking points from Crystal Palace’s excellent 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

For a recap of all of Saturday’s action, check out our Scoreboard summary here.

Crystal Palace 3-0 Tottenham Hotspur

  • Goals: Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) pen, Odsonne Edouard (£6.5m) x2
  • Assists: Conor Gallagher (£5.5m) x2, Zaha
  • Bonus: Edouard x3, Zaha x2, Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) x1
  • Red cards: Japhet Tanganga (£4.5m)

SON INJURY LATEST

Antonio, Benrahma and Son among eye-catching FPL assets as De Bruyne returns 5

Son Heung-min (£10.0m) and Steven Bergwijn (£6.0m) were absent from Spurs’ defeat at Crystal Palace, while Eric Dier (£4.6m) was forced off after just 11 minutes of the loss at Selhurst Park.

Nuno Espirito Santo was, as ever, a bit thin on details after the game:

“I don’t know. [Son] doesn’t look well. Stevie, let’s wait and see this week. Hopefully, they will improve and be available for the next game, let’s see.

“Let’s wait and see [on Dier].” – Nuno Espirito Santo

With Dier potentially missing, Japhet Tanganga (£4.5m) suspended, and Cristian Romero (£4.9m) and Davinson Sanchez (£4.5m) only returning from quarantine the day before Spurs take on Chelsea next weekend, owners of Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) will be eyeing up the Lilywhites’ centre-half crisis with interest.

SPURS CREATE LITTLE

Son and Bergwijn have been two of Spurs’ better performers this season and the north Londoners were abject in their absence, with Santo’s decision to opt for a diamond formation looking like a misstep.

Their unavailability, Dier’s early injury and Tanganga’s 58th-minute red card were all mitigating factors for this off-day but in truth, the visitors were barely in this contest even at 11 v 11: they managed only two shots in the whole of this clash (none in the first half) and have the worst expected goals tally (0.09) in Gameweek 4 so far.

“It is a big concern, we had enough quality and talent to play better. We didn’t do it, credit to Palace they were aggressive and they didn’t allow too much time on the ball. We lost duels, many, many situations that I think we should do much better. In terms of offensive, much improvement is required.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

The positive start to the campaign has masked some disappointing underlying attacking numbers, and it’s perhaps no surprise that a side led by the pragmatic Santo looked more at home when counter-attacking against Manchester City in Gameweek 1 than when the onus was on them to break down the likes of Palace and Watford.

SPURS’ ATTACKING NUMBERS IN 2021/22

GALLAGHER WILL GET “LOTS OF GOALS”

Conor Gallagher (£5.5m) delivered two attacking returns for the second Gameweek in a row.

On direct free-kicks, indirect free-kicks and corners, he was involved in nine of the 18 shots that Palace had on Saturday.

And six of those attempts came directly from him, with some wild efforts from distance mixed with some excellent close-range chances: Hugo Lloris (£5.6m) denied him from point-blank range in the first half before a goalbound effort from 10 yards was blocked by a Spurs defender.

“He’s full of energy. He likes to get inside the box, he’s working hard with and without the ball. He loves to get round this area.

“I believe he’s one of the players who can get a lot of goals for us. He’s a lovely kid, his work ethic is fantastic, he comes in everyday with a smile on his face and he want to improve himself. He’s a positive player.” – Patrick Vieira on Conor Gallagher

Gallagher’s ability to ghost into the box has really caught the eye in the last three Gameweeks, with right-sided forward Jordan Ayew (£5.9m) generally staying wider to allow inside space for the Chelsea loanee to occupy.

Above: Palace’s average positions in Gameweek 4; Ayew (9), Gallagher (23).

ZAHA ON PENS

Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) seemingly consolidated his position as Palace’s first-choice penalty taker, stepping up to take the Eagles’ spot-kick with Luka Milivojevic (£5.4m) on the field.

“I just told myself that I feel like I hold myself back a lot. It’s not even I tell myself I can’t do stuff, I just don’t do it. One day I just thought: ‘Why am I not taking penalties?’ You’ll be seeing me take corners, free-kicks soon enough! Why am I limiting myself? So today I see a penalty came and, yeah, it’s me taking it… as long as I keep scoring them you’ll see more of me, don’t worry.” – Wilfried Zaha

Zaha also hailed his new manager’s more front-foot approach, while perhaps aiming a slightly dig at Roy Hodgson; Palace average over 50% of possession this season, having had less than 40% of the ball in 2020/21.

“The way we’re playing, we’re bound to get a chance. I feel like it’s not just counter-attacks and hoofing the ball around, when it’s properly planned the way we’re playing the goals are going to come eventually.

“It just shows we’re not just a counter-attacking team, we can actually play out the back and play through teams. Obviously today we showed we’re definitely improving.” – Wilfried Zaha

EDOUARD ENTERS MID-PRICE FORWARD MIX

83rd-minute substitute Odsonne Edouard (£6.5m) announced his Premier League arrival in style, taking mere seconds to open his Palace account before doubling his tally in injury time.

“For him to come on and score those two goals is really good for him. It will give him the belief and more confidence to do well for the team. I’m really happy for him because it will help the team in the future.

“We are a team though and again I will mention Christian because of his work ethic. When Edouard came on he had more space in the line and more time in the box and that allowed him to score those two goals.

“I don’t want to take away from those two chances that he took because he did really well, but I want to give Christian credit as well because of the way he worked in the first 70 minutes.” – Patrick Vieira

While the circumstances – Spurs down to ten men, under-strength at centre-half, chasing an equaliser etc – were perfect for a goalscoring debut, he’s one for the watchlist in the ‘Ivan Toney (£6.4m) replacement’ bracket.

The problem with Palace assets is that, if they’re not available at a ‘benchable’ price like perhaps Gallagher is, they haven’t really got a sustained run of good fixtures coming up.

There are some decent home matches littered among their upcoming run of games but some trickier tests in between, which does make FPL investment that little bit more problematic.

Palace XI: Guaita, Ward, Guéhi, Andersen, Mitchell, Kouyaté (Milivojevic 67), McArthur, Gallagher, Ayew (Olise 87), Zaha, Benteke (Edouard 83).

Spurs XI: Lloris, Reguilón, Højbjerg, Dier (Rodon 12), Tanganga, Winks (Davies 60), Royal, Alli, Skipp, Moura, Kane.

Yes, the more obvious move but Fernandes is tipping along nicely no? Leaves me with Benrahma and Antonio. I’d have to play Coufal/Bissouma/Livramento for Antonio

Don't think playing Bissouma for the 2 points is too bad. Antonio was likely gonna blank against United anyway.

Strange because after watching United yesterday my impression os that play attackers Vs them. Awfully balance, which teams of West ham quality will exploit. Newcastle without Wilson and Shelvey scored 1 and should have scored one more at least, you cant play with Pogba as cdm when you have that set up in front of him, Ronaldo is bad defender, Sancho and Grenwood too, and Bruno is not very good either.

Bruno to Salah, Kane to Ronaldo, Regi to TAA if you can

Could even stretch to -12 and lose Coufal for TAA's sake (most important GW5 asset). GW5 will be a low rank, but you'll be back on track

Coufal to White will cover Antonio's 1 GW absence for that -12

Benrahma to Gallagher next GW, Ronaldo to Lukaku in GW7, Shaw to Chelsea D in GW8

Jota will go for a hit/FT when Firmino returns, or maybe GW7 if a Chelsea mid is finally nailed

                To
                Trent, Gallagher, Ronaldo and Bamford

You'll want a highly owned Antonio vs Leeds. He's not on your priority list for sales. Just take Bissouma's 2 points as an Antonio blank against Man U

that may be true, but it was only a Newcastle defence!! I have money ITB to get if he continues and even if his price rises by 0.3M, just keeping Bruno, who scored a stunner, as opposed to in the 6 yard box!! you could be right, but not yet, not enough evidence. 🙂

Both goals he made for himself with sharpness.

Most of them won’t be pretty, but he’s a predator.

If I was opposition coach - I’d stick a man hard on Pogba. That’s the supply… bar the odd Shaw foray. Make Bruno come deep.

Two. I agree. All three. Disagree. You can have a great team with just two. Even if all three will work some weeks too.

They'll all score well afross the season obvioisly, but you have a squad of 15 players.

I would say the chance of all three of them blanking this next GW is far higher than it was this GW.

And you're paying a lot of money for that.

11.5 for Lukaku and say 5.5 for a playing mid = 17 Million.

That buys a DCL and a Jota/Torres/Greenwood etc. Not so sure Lukaku + 5.5 beats their combined score. Unless you capatain every 2 weeks then value is limited.

Big Guns looks great on paper but sverely weakens the overall Team. Yes, there are many cheap options in mid/defence and even fwds this season. I posted a half decent Team earlier, but overall the quality is just not there (in my oppinion).

The bigger picture is the rest of ur team and the detrimental affect 3 premiums has on it. You are going to have 2/3 ass players for the benefit of one you’re not even going to cap 2/3 weeks.

It's not workable imo assuming you want to keep TAA as well. You need to have two or three of the 5.5 - 6.0 mids with nowhere to run to if they don't produce.

8.5 striker (say DCl or Antonio) and TAA outscores 4.5 def and Lukaku imo over a period of time

Not really, especially if you want to keep TAA.

Plenty of great value picks in the 7.5-8.2M range like DCL, Antonio, Jota, Greenwood that you will miss out on by having 3 premiums.

2 premiums gives you the best squad balance which lets you shift around players while minimising hits. Guys like Gray, Gallagher etc. are gonna be hard to shift as there aren't a lot of good alternatives in that price bracket.

Despite of the red card itself, maybe it is a right time to get rid of Antonio?

WH will have to play 6 games within 17 days, while the squad depth is not great overall. Won't they regress as a team?

If you can, for free, without interrupting any plan you have - then sure thing. Roll the dice.

I only really like the look of Bamford/DCL next week (at that price point or lower).

Personally I have DCL already. I have Raphinha already. Also have White (BUR). I can't afford Bamford for a straight swap - so I'll probably just use my bench.

If I have the money I'd be tempted. However there is also European games this week, so reason enough to wait for that too.

True that, will wait and see. Can do the move for free, it will be my last move before I save 2FTs for GW7 Kaku swap.

I think they will prioritise the PL. They can get through their Europa League group with a weakened team starting someone OOP up front. Given his suspension, Antonio could start Dinamo Zagreb away, then the cup game, GW6, and GW7. No need to start him in the easier Rapid Vienna home game.

Leicester and Wolves have not put out their best teams in the Europa League group stages in the past couple of years and still made it through.

I know mate shocking, should have just kept Sanchez, I got

Ok cool, I also like a keeper differential. That spot is so over looked, in close rivalries keepers can make a big difference.
Like in Blades first season, my mate had an almost identical team to me but he had Henderson who got him like 25+ points more than my keeper in like 4/5 weeks

With so many good attackers in the league now, I'm torn between forgetting Sánchez for the foreseeable and going ahead with this fixture-based glove transfer dance

The only other option I can see for maximising points there is a premium keeper, but not for me, as even they can be breached annoyingly often by the many improved attacks and lose value quickly

I always intended to have Sanchez as sole keeper for the first 8 GWs. Planning ahead, I've tried out many combos and the best I've settled on is spending 9.5 on a 5m main keeper - prob Meslier, maybe Sa, and a 4.5 to cover the Big 4 fixtures. Currently Guaita looks the part. Could be Rammy - haven't checked yet.

Trying to find away to get him in, not easy tho, I have the exact money to do Antonio, One of Jota or Greenwood and DCL to Lukaku, Gallagher and Eduoard, but one it a week to easy for Palace fixtures and two I don’t know if I want to lose the 3 I’d take out, but then Jota and Greenwood rotation risks, DCL carrying an injury it seems and Antonio suspend and fixtures turn a bit and Europe starts

The crazy thing is that he might not be a regular starter. We'll have to see.

Feeling a bit unlucky with my Arsenal triple-up of Tierney, Odegaard and ESR. Most shots from Arsenal in a single game since 2017, but they came away with no attacking returns. On to the next one then.

yeah unlucky - ESR is pretty frustrating shooting wise, personally think he just doesn't have it in his locker but hoping it's just confidence - also Tierney always looks dangerous but doesn't seem to actually assist much, starting to wonder if it's something he's doing wrong - loving Saka though

I think it's in his locker. His shot near the end was decent, but well-saved. He could be a Ramseyesque goal-scorer, I think. Hope so, anyway

Please tell me the -8 I paid was worth it:
    (Brackets) are the ones out:

    Bachman - Gunn

    Tierney - TAA - Semedo - Livramento - Williams

Salah - Gray (Jota)- Traore - Odegaard - Bissouma

Ronaldo (Auba) - Lukaku - Bamford (Anthony)

Very straightforward double swap from a mid though.

          True that

I'm also curious what happens when Boly comes in. Saiss drops out? Historically Wolves defence is 100% more likely to keep a cs with Boly. Not sure that Watford is any guide to general clean sheet prospects.

A moderate upset, but there are no excellent teams in Serie A these days so these things do happen fairly often.

538 had Sampdoria 15% to win and 21% to draw. Comparable to Leicester yesterday 15% to win and 20% to draw against Man City.

Lukaku and Ronaldo essentials now? Or overboard? I can see lukaku going nuts v spurs.

It'd mean a 4.5 attacker plus those two but quite happy with team otherwise :

      Sanchez, 4.0
      TAA, Shaw, Digne, Marcal, Coufal
      Salah, Jota, Greenwood, Benrahma, Brownhill
      Ronaldo, Antonio, Scarlett

      1FT, 0.8itb

      Should I:

      A - Antonio to Bamford
      B - Benrahma to Raphinha
      C - Coufal to Laporte
      D - Coufal & Brownhill to Williams & Gallagher (-4)

My initial plan was to do B as I'm not keen on triple West Ham v triple Utd. I would've played Antonio but for his suspension and benched Coufal.

Leaning towards C now as I would only really play Coufal in gw7 and he's been an expensive sub so far. Plus having a City defender isn't the worst thing. Only thing though is that it would leave me playing a 5-4-1 formation.

      Thoughts?
