Scout Notes

Son and Dier injury latest as budget FPL midfielder Gallagher again impresses

We begin our more detailed Scout Notes of the weekend’s matches with a look at the main talking points from Crystal Palace’s excellent 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

For a recap of all of Saturday’s action, check out our Scoreboard summary here.

Crystal Palace 3-0 Tottenham Hotspur

  • Goals: Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) pen, Odsonne Edouard (£6.5m) x2
  • Assists: Conor Gallagher (£5.5m) x2, Zaha
  • Bonus: Edouard x3, Zaha x2, Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) x1
  • Red cards: Japhet Tanganga (£4.5m)

SON INJURY LATEST

Antonio, Benrahma and Son among eye-catching FPL assets as De Bruyne returns 5

Son Heung-min (£10.0m) and Steven Bergwijn (£6.0m) were absent from Spurs’ defeat at Crystal Palace, while Eric Dier (£4.6m) was forced off after just 11 minutes of the loss at Selhurst Park.

Nuno Espirito Santo was, as ever, a bit thin on details after the game:

“I don’t know. [Son] doesn’t look well. Stevie, let’s wait and see this week. Hopefully, they will improve and be available for the next game, let’s see.

“Let’s wait and see [on Dier].” – Nuno Espirito Santo

With Dier potentially missing, Japhet Tanganga (£4.5m) suspended, and Cristian Romero (£4.9m) and Davinson Sanchez (£4.5m) only returning from quarantine the day before Spurs take on Chelsea next weekend, owners of Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) will be eyeing up the Lilywhites’ centre-half crisis with interest.

SPURS CREATE LITTLE

Son and Bergwijn have been two of Spurs’ better performers this season and the north Londoners were abject in their absence, with Santo’s decision to opt for a diamond formation looking like a misstep.

Their unavailability, Dier’s early injury and Tanganga’s 58th-minute red card were all mitigating factors for this off-day but in truth, the visitors were barely in this contest even at 11 v 11: they managed only two shots in the whole of this clash (none in the first half) and have the worst expected goals tally (0.09) in Gameweek 4 so far.

“It is a big concern, we had enough quality and talent to play better. We didn’t do it, credit to Palace they were aggressive and they didn’t allow too much time on the ball. We lost duels, many, many situations that I think we should do much better. In terms of offensive, much improvement is required.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

The positive start to the campaign has masked some disappointing underlying attacking numbers, and it’s perhaps no surprise that a side led by the pragmatic Santo looked more at home when counter-attacking against Manchester City in Gameweek 1 than when the onus was on them to break down the likes of Palace and Watford.

SPURS’ ATTACKING NUMBERS IN 2021/22

GALLAGHER WILL GET “LOTS OF GOALS”

Conor Gallagher (£5.5m) delivered two attacking returns for the second Gameweek in a row.

On direct free-kicks, indirect free-kicks and corners, he was involved in nine of the 18 shots that Palace had on Saturday.

And six of those attempts came directly from him, with some wild efforts from distance mixed with some excellent close-range chances: Hugo Lloris (£5.6m) denied him from point-blank range in the first half before a goalbound effort from 10 yards was blocked by a Spurs defender.

“He’s full of energy. He likes to get inside the box, he’s working hard with and without the ball. He loves to get round this area.

“I believe he’s one of the players who can get a lot of goals for us. He’s a lovely kid, his work ethic is fantastic, he comes in everyday with a smile on his face and he want to improve himself. He’s a positive player.” – Patrick Vieira on Conor Gallagher

Gallagher’s ability to ghost into the box has really caught the eye in the last three Gameweeks, with right-sided forward Jordan Ayew (£5.9m) generally staying wider to allow inside space for the Chelsea loanee to occupy.

Above: Palace’s average positions in Gameweek 4; Ayew (9), Gallagher (23).

ZAHA ON PENS

Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) seemingly consolidated his position as Palace’s first-choice penalty taker, stepping up to take the Eagles’ spot-kick with Luka Milivojevic (£5.4m) on the field.

“I just told myself that I feel like I hold myself back a lot. It’s not even I tell myself I can’t do stuff, I just don’t do it. One day I just thought: ‘Why am I not taking penalties?’ You’ll be seeing me take corners, free-kicks soon enough! Why am I limiting myself? So today I see a penalty came and, yeah, it’s me taking it… as long as I keep scoring them you’ll see more of me, don’t worry.” – Wilfried Zaha

Zaha also hailed his new manager’s more front-foot approach, while perhaps aiming a slightly dig at Roy Hodgson; Palace average over 50% of possession this season, having had less than 40% of the ball in 2020/21.

“The way we’re playing, we’re bound to get a chance. I feel like it’s not just counter-attacks and hoofing the ball around, when it’s properly planned the way we’re playing the goals are going to come eventually.

“It just shows we’re not just a counter-attacking team, we can actually play out the back and play through teams. Obviously today we showed we’re definitely improving.” – Wilfried Zaha

EDOUARD ENTERS MID-PRICE FORWARD MIX

83rd-minute substitute Odsonne Edouard (£6.5m) announced his Premier League arrival in style, taking mere seconds to open his Palace account before doubling his tally in injury time.

“For him to come on and score those two goals is really good for him. It will give him the belief and more confidence to do well for the team. I’m really happy for him because it will help the team in the future.

“We are a team though and again I will mention Christian because of his work ethic. When Edouard came on he had more space in the line and more time in the box and that allowed him to score those two goals.

“I don’t want to take away from those two chances that he took because he did really well, but I want to give Christian credit as well because of the way he worked in the first 70 minutes.” – Patrick Vieira

While the circumstances – Spurs down to ten men, under-strength at centre-half, chasing an equaliser etc – were perfect for a goalscoring debut, he’s one for the watchlist in the ‘Ivan Toney (£6.4m) replacement’ bracket.

The problem with Palace assets is that, if they’re not available at a ‘benchable’ price like perhaps Gallagher is, they haven’t really got a sustained run of good fixtures coming up.

There are some decent home matches littered among their upcoming run of games but some trickier tests in between, which does make FPL investment that little bit more problematic.

Palace XI: Guaita, Ward, Guéhi, Andersen, Mitchell, Kouyaté (Milivojevic 67), McArthur, Gallagher, Ayew (Olise 87), Zaha, Benteke (Edouard 83).

Spurs XI: Lloris, Reguilón, Højbjerg, Dier (Rodon 12), Tanganga, Winks (Davies 60), Royal, Alli, Skipp, Moura, Kane.

How many FT? Definitely not a WC the defence is good, Amartey stays on bench but you can play 3 this week. Dont know why Shaw has a star he has a few more good fixtures? So id say you only have 4 concerns, 3 of which can play next week anyway

Gunn in as possibly KRUL will lose his place. Gunn has been Norwich’s No 1.

Also keep an eye on Watford’s reserve goal keeper dropping 0.1 in price, as this cud give you a. vital 0.1 or even a 0.2 to spend elsewhere.

Dier over White makes zero sense to me.

Grrenwood and Jota could both be dodgy for starts after next IB with Rashford and Firmino coming into the equation. That's coming right up.

Possibly White, but as a a Gooner myself, l don’t trust our defence. I’ll an eye on White or Tomi though.

I don’t thk Greenwood will b dropped atm, esp as he’s either scoring or assisting and Oli loves him. Greenwood can easily b dropped for POGBA.

When Bobbi back I’ll swap him for another mid, but l still feel I’m guaranteed another GW and even poss x2.

A couple of game weeks looks fine of course and you could blast it.

Spurs were beyond awful yesterday. It could be with bodies back they'll pick up but 4.4 White gets you Manquillo over Omo 🙂

      - Save 0.2m by getting Broja over Dennis (you won't start anyway, and he's looked fantastic coming on so far. May earn a starting spot soon).

      - I think no Leeds could be a challenge. Torres vs. SOU is good, but so is Raphinha vs. NEW (and Raphinha has better immediate fixtures anyway). You can sell Jota for Torres from GW9-ish?

      - Currently no easy route for a Chelsea defender unless you downgrade Ronaldo or Jota/Torres anyway. Would be tempted to get someone say you do the above, that save 0.8 - 0.9m, which means you could get a 4.9m defender instead of White (Tierney? Semedo? Bertrand?) - or up to Digne territory, making the Chelsea switch easier.

      - Part of me wants to suggest Ramsdale over Sanchez as you have Duffy anyway is okay short term. Can understand not being confident of starts long term yet for Ramsdale though.

    Sanchez, 4.0
    TAA, Shaw, Digne, Marcal, Coufal
    Salah, Jota, Greenwood, Benrahma, Brownhill
    Ronaldo, Antonio, Scarlett

    1FT, 0.8itb

    Should I:

    A - Antonio to Bamford
    B - Benrahma to Raphinha
    C - Coufal to Laporte
    D - Coufal & Brownhill to Williams & Gallagher (-4)

My initial plan was to do B as I'm not keen on triple West Ham v triple Utd. I would've played Antonio but for his suspension and benched Coufal.

Leaning towards C now as I would only really play Coufal in gw7 and he's been an expensive sub so far. Plus having a City defender isn't the worst thing. Only thing though is that it would leave me playing a 5-4-1 formation for gw5.

Looks like he will get some goals but these early substitutions are very annoying.

He was subbed for Hwang who scored, and Podence essentially set up the Hwang goal.

Huge part of the reason why Podence was such an annoying pick last season.

Part of me is almost relieved to play White (BUR) over him, altkough Antonio may very well have scored anyway.

Arsenal can just as easily concede though!

I got rid of Antonio for Ronaldo.

Only readon I am keeping Benrhama for GW5 is because UTD have only kept one clean sheet so who knows, could be a chance he hauls. I am planning to do BenR to Gallagher but only after LFC.

If he keeos playing Pogba as part of 2 DM, and with Ronaldo who does not track back, Sancho who is awful in defence, Grenwood not much better and Bruno also not a very good defender, it sort og screams goals conceded. West ham, Even without Antonio will score and Villa will score if they play anything like they did against Chelsea. Shaw is there for his attacking potensial, and like Vs Wolves you sometimes gets away with unbalanced team. If Solskjaer goes back to 2 dms like Mctom and Fred then defence will be somewhat better.

This is also why united generally do better defensively and big games. Everyone will sell Shaw for the tough fixtures but that is when his potential will be highest

Yep, they usually do that. I would put West ham and Villa in the braket below big games so will concede in those very likely. But both those teams are defensively suspect on their respektive right hand side so Shaw could still do well

    Current team for GW5:

    Bachmann
    Shaw Ayling White Veltman
    Salah Bruno Raph Ben Gray
    Ronaldo
    (Foster Coufal Antonio* Obafemi*)
    1 FT, 0 ITB

    Which is better?
    A. Improve defence with Coufal (MUN, lee) -> Matip (CRY, bre), bench Veltman (LEI). Can only do a like-for-like move GW6.
    B. Ignore defence; do Bruno (whu, AVL) -> Jota (CRY, bre), then Obafemi -> DCL (NOR) GW6.

    WC GW7. TIA

Help please, I just wildcarded last week and wondering how I should approach Antonio. Currently have:
    Sanchez, Steele
    TAA, Shaw, Christensen, Semedo, Livramento
    Salah, Jota, Raphinha, Benrahma, Gray
    Ronaldo, Antonio, Dennis

    I'm thinking either
    A) Antonio > Bamford or
    B) Antonio > DCL and Benrahm > Sarr for -4.
    Any thoughts or other ideas?

I made a mistake last night and activated WC thinking I had to get both Lukaku and Ronaldo in, to catch rises et cetera. Now I realize I am probably not even keeping Lukaku.

Any chance of a double rise for Kaku as consolation, you think?

Like my WC? Or want to roast it?

    Ramsdale (Gunn)
Semedo - TAA - Marcal (Livramento, Williams)
    Salah - Jota - Greenwood - Torres - Raph
    Ronaldo - DCL (Scarlett)

    0.2 itb

    My plan:
    - When Chelsea fixtures turn around GW7 I have penciled in: Semedo>James, Torres>Mount, Ronaldo>Lukaku
    - Double wolves until that James move, thinking they have good fixtures.
    - Gunn, some guy above said maybe Krul loses his palce, I need to try find the most likely playing 4.0 keeper

I know my mid is sprinkled with rotation risks, but they all have good ceilings (almost premiums in my mind), they can all score from the bench. I think I would need to be extremely unlucky to ever have a week where 2 didnt play at all. I could move Torres to Mount sooner if needs be (means changing Semedo to Coady).

      - monitor mount rotation risk
      - don't love a double defence personally unless it's from a top side
      - simply not the case at all. krul is the clear no.1.

WC RMT Have gone with the premium approach.
    £0ITB

    Sanchez
    TAA, Shaw, White, Marcal
    Salah, Jota, Raphinha, Gallagher
    Ronaldo, Lukaku

    subs: Steer, Livramento, Kovacic, Scarlett

I know a defender or gallagher could be upgraded but there is not much manoeuvre

I'd swap kovacic out for someone cheaper - it's a Chelsea spot which might be needed later, and can't see him regularly scoring/assisting
