Scout Notes

Antonio the most-sold FPL player of Gameweek 5 as one-match ban looms

We’ve got Scout Notes from another Gameweek 4 match in this article, rounding up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Southampton v West Ham United.

For a briefer recap of Saturday’s games, our Scoreboard summary here has all the main talking points.

SOUTHAMPTON 0-0 WEST HAM UNITED

  • Bonus: Angelo Ogbonna (£5.0m) x3, Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) x2, Mohamed Salisu (£4.5m) x2
  • Red card: Michail Antonio (£7.9m)

ANTONIO BAN

Antonio suspended for Gameweek 5 as Brighton suffer defender injury 3

The highest-scoring and most-owned forward in FPL will miss Gameweek 5 as a result of his sending off on Saturday.

Michail Antonio (£7.9m) will be suspended for one match after being dismissed for two bookable offences against Southampton and the Fantasy exodus has already begun, with a remarkable 700,000 managers offloading the striker by Monday morning.

Jarrod Bowen (£6.3m) will now presumably lead the line against Manchester United next weekend, having deputised for Antonio last season.

For those still weighing up whether to keep or sell the in-form forward, the Hammers’ schedule isn’t atrocious from Gameweek 6 onwards (see above) but favourable fixture swings for the likes of Patrick Bamford (£7.9m) and Raul Jimenez (£7.4m), plus the form of the premium picks, will turn more heads between now and Friday’s deadline.

Of longer-term concern may be Said Benrahma (£6.4m). The match stats look encouraging – he was joint-top for chances created and shots, with two of each – but he was, in reality, anonymous and eventually hooked after an hour. He’s now had just one touch in the box over the last two Gameweeks.

“I thought today we played some really good football in the first half but the mid to forward area we did not connect.

“It looked like that had all been away, Pablo, Said, Mic so it looked like we lacked a real connection.” – David Moyes

It was just one under-par game, of course, but with the UEFA Europa League about to get underway, Nikola Vlasic (£6.0m) now pushing for a start, Benrahma’s underlying numbers being so-so, and Moyes’ track record for being lukewarm on the Algerian, having an exit plan might not be the worst idea.

SAINTS CHANGE SHAPE

Antonio suspended for Gameweek 5 as Brighton suffer defender injury 4

One other thing to factor in regarding West Ham is that, after their whirlwind, high-scoring start, other teams may be changing their plans in order to frustrate them.

That happened on Saturday, with Ralph Hasenhuttl paying the Hammers the ultimate compliment by tweaking his usual 4-2-2-2 to a more defensive 4-1-4-1.

“The goal was very clear. They have their biggest threat with deliveries from the half-channel or from the side in the box. We forced them to play a little bit more to the centre and try to play there.

“Yes, we had less possession but no we didn’t have less chances to win the game. I think we have never been so close to win against them.

“This was always a team we were really struggling against, today I must say, especially the defence work from all of the team was amazing. This is the key of staying in the game and having a chance to win it.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl on his formation change

“They have by far played their best game against Antonio. We were always struggling against him in the past and today he was sent off and the red card frustrated, because there was no chance for him.

“This was exactly their job and it’s good to see they have this quality because this is what I want to see.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl on his two centre-halves

The tactical switch is one to monitor going forward: it may have been a one-week only decision but if not, James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m) could enjoy more attacking freedom playing ahead of – and not alongside – Oriel Romeu (£4.5m).

It might also help boost the assist potential of budget FPL asset Tino Livramento (£4.1m), who earned his fourth straight start on Saturday. Saints, who kept their first Premier League clean sheet in six months here, didn’t concede a single big chance to their visitors.

BUDGET FORWARD BROJA IMPRESSES

Newport County v Southampton - Carabao Cup Second Round

FPL managers have been starved of sub-£5.5m forward options this season but Armando Broja’s (£5.0m) cameo on Saturday brought the Albania international to attention.

The ex-Chelsea striker caused the West Ham backline plenty of problems in less than 20 minutes of pitch-time, hitting the post from distance before seeing a headed effort cleared off the line.

“He was a slow starter when he was coming in but in the last three weeks it’s impressive how quick he learns and how quick he wants to do it better.

“On Saturday I have seen why we signed him and why the scouts wanted him to sign and this is good. The first two weeks, I was looking what he has to give for me and I can see now, to be honest.

“I had some very serious conversations with him to tell him what I want to see and he’s been a bit of a slow starter, you need to push him a little bit I think, and now he’s moving in the direction I want to see and definitely shown his qualities he has so far in this moment. This is very positive for me.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl on Armando Broja

If Hasenhuttl persists with one starting striker, that’s an immediate dent in Broja’s appeal but he’s one to monitor ahead of Gameweek 8, when Saints’ fixtures turn for the better.

One other thing to note was the Southampton boss saying post-match that the omission of Che Adams (£7.0m) was due in part to wanting to use players who hadn’t been away on international duty, although a number of capped players did feature from kick-off.

Southampton XI: McCarthy, Livramento, Stephens, Salisu, Perraud, Romeu (Diallo 53), Ward-Prowse, Elyounoussi, Djenepo, Redmond, Armstrong (Broja 74).

West Ham United XI: Fabianski, Coufal, Dawson, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Rice, Soucek, Bowen (Yarmolenko 82), Fornals, Benrahma (Vlasic 63), Antonio.

Jota under threat from Bobby and Rash on the mend makes Greenwood look short term too. You could get a good couple of weeks from them but the next IB could see them both out.

Bit of a Marcal sceptic here. It was just Watford and he is 32 and has an injury history that matches Antonio.

It’s mental to sell Antonio. The guys got four goals and four assists in four games. He’ll get a rest against United and then had a decent run of games. You all are nuts.

That means using two valuable transfers AND new more pressing transfer issues can always emerge.

Pressing transfer issues like... a player missing a match for getting a red card. lol. That is a big gap in the team that is going to cost plenty of points and is arguably more important than the FT being used.

I get what you're saying but personally (and I reckon a lot of people are in this situation) I haven't got any other transfers I'd make this week. It's either a major overhaul with WC or nothing - I can't do anything worthwhile with 1FT a week between now and then.

I rarely consider a 1 match ban a pressing issue. Of course there may be cases where bringing in a replacement for Antonio may be sensible, but I am quite sure that is not true in most cases .

So for people who have no other transfers they plan to make this week or next, and who plan on WC in GW6 or 7, what would you suggest?

Oh lol! I am not here to make any general suggestions. Just saying that most of the managers transferring Antonio out are making a mistake.

I wasn't being sarcastic with the "what would you suggest?" question, it was genuine - I'm clueless what to do other than WC early. When I get 2FT next week, or 3 the week after, I feel like I'm going to be wasting them if I WC. Maybe I just save up 3FT and do less major squad surgery GW7 and save WC for a more distant time.

Ok, I misunderstood you. Sorry about that.

First of all you can't have 3 FT. Really difficult to suggest anything without knowing your team.

Is that new this year for no more than 1 saved FT being possible?

I have TAA, White, Shaw in defence, Salah, Jota, Greenwood and Benrahma in mid, DCL, Antonio and Lukaku up front. Bench is Amartey, White and Livra.

I just had the thought to do Amartey to Marcal for now and play him instead of Antonio. I have the extra cash. That way I can hold off on other changes and decide if WC is needed or not in GW7 based on how the team performs.

I’d consider a pressing issue to be a player who’s out injured for a while, or whose form has dropped off a cliff, not a striker missing one game against top of the league opposition.

I wouldn't sell him to get him straight back the next week, especially if you had him from the beginning at 7.5.

If you're swapping him for Bamford, what's the problem? Both are the same price and you are using the funds you had from his price increase both ways, so not losing any.

            • 8 Years

It would depend on what price you paid for Antonio. For example, I had him from the beginning at 7.5. That means I can currently sell him for 7.7, then by buying him back 1 week later I'd be paying 7.9. Just my opinion but it doesn't make sense for just 1 game week, might as well bench him.

But with so many selling him, won't that bring his price back down anyway, in line with the profit made selling him this week? I genuinely don't know how the drops work, time wise so it may be I have guessed wrong on this.

I had planned pre-season to have Antonio and Benrahma until the Europa kicked in, ie about now. Ben is on course to get transferred out as expected. Antonio gets a longer stay. How long depends on his form, but I don't expect it to be for that long - I'm estimating and planning for GW10 at the moment. As I've got Ronaldo and Lukaku, his replacement will be cheaper, and I'll be scouting 5.0-6.5 prospects in the coming weeks. Certainly in the next few weeks he should haul against dodgy Leeds and Spurs and Villa defences and Brentford, so long as he stays fit.

No, but your argument for keeping is 4 goals and 4 assists in 4 games. Look at future returns, not the past. It's not like he's in a league of his own. Bamford was better than him last season and DCL was not far behind.

Form is not as simple as getting FPL returns. Of course when Bamford is facing United and Pool while Antonio is facing Newcastle, 10-man Leicester, he's going to likely outscore him.

He's been quite low for a while, don't think he will drop until midseason.
He's also coming in to my team off the bench so I'm hoping he puts a couple past Everton

2.4 ITB, worth a hit to remove either of these?

    A. Toney, means playing Duffy (LEI)
    B. Antonio, Duffy moves to the bench

    B. Toney > DCL (would leave me with 0.1ITB and 1FT)

    Friends, please:

    Meslier (4.0)
TAA / Shaw / Coufal (Livramento, Omobamidele)
    Salah / Jota / Torres / Raphinha / Benrahma
    Bamford / Ronaldo (Obafemi)

    So, Benrahma to
    A. Gray
    B. Gallagher
    C. Saka
    D. Coufal to Coady/Marçal instead

I think so mate - security of starts, new gaffer seems to favour him, his positioning is outrageously high and gets big chances delivered on a plate.

He seriously does need to sort his composure out though, 2BC and had the compsure of Adama Traore 🙂

Marcal has value but id worry about ait-nori. I dont think Semedo has solid competition on the right.

My WC draft, attempting to get in CR7 & Lukaku without dropping Salah & TAA:

    Sanchez/Steele (no change)
    TAA, Shaw, Duffy, Marcal, Livramento
    Salah, Raphinha, Gallagher, TBC*, 4.5m
    TBC*, CR7, Lukaku

TBC pairing has to be 13.1m or less:
    e.g. Gray and Jiminez
    Trincao & Dennis
    Kovacic & Bamford

      TAA Ayling Marcal
      Salah Raphinha Sarr Gallagher Jota
      Ronaldo Lukaku

Lol traores about to rise in price even after 4 blanks. Have to give up on him after that much time at least. He's unlikely to maintain the expected stats he showed first 3 gameweeks against the upcoming teams as shown this week and if he can't score from that many chances why would he from a lesser amount?

This shows how much spoonfeeding goes on these days from pods and social media. Usually, casuals just buy the player who just scored last week. I know because I used to be one myself. But now four blanks and his price is rising

    Sanchez
    TAA | Shaw | Marcal | Ayling
    Salah | Jota | Torres | Gray | Greenwood
    Ronaldo

Oh sorry misread, yep looks solid.
Marcal was a nice buy last week. And yeh Ayling not worth a trade although Llorente injured and Strujik out weakens their defence and also shifts him (Ayling) most likely to CB.

Been tinkering with my WC nonstop over the last two days and I just can't seem to be happy with having Lukaku, Ronaldo, Salah and TAA all in one team.

I know it is ideal to have all 4 but I think it jeopardises the rest of the squad too much.

    Thoughts on the below WC team;

    Sanchez
    TAA White Marcal
    Salah Jota Torres Greenwood Raphinha
    Ronaldo DCL

    Foster Williams Livra Zeqiri

    0.8 ITB.

Will move Ronaldo and Williams to Lukaku and James in two weeks.

Its such a tough question to answer.
His underlying statistics suggests that he should be a great pick in coming weeks - Whether his points will come from goals or assists. He may simply have been very unlucky so far, but I would also contemplate that his horrific head injury last season affects his performance on the pitch. He used to get a couple of goals from headers and one can understand a "mental barrier" he could have from doing that now.

I wildcarded in GW4 and my fwd line is Lukaku, Antonio and Bamford. Antonio to Bamford would have been a good pick if I didn't already own him, but I just want to see a goal from Jimenez before I would sell Antonio for him. At the same time - Antonio vs man utd is not a great fixture for the striker, so I don't think its too problematic to bench him for this one if you can play someone from your bench in GW5.

    3. Wılly
      • 10 Years

He's had shots and chance creation, but they've all been pretty low xG.
He needs to get back up to speed, he's been playing a bit deeper and more of a link-up player.
I want him but I don't think I'll get him just yet.
