Ronaldo and Lukaku’s FPL Gameweek 5 hauls assessed as Wilson ‘could miss month’

We continue our Scout Notes of the weekend’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) matches with analysis of Manchester United v Newcastle United and Chelsea v Aston Villa.

For a briefer recap of all of Saturday’s action, check out our Scoreboard summary here.

MANCHESTER UNITED 4-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED

  • Goals: Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) x2, Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m), Jesse Lingard (£6.9m) | Javier Manquillo (£4.0m)
  • Assists: Mason Greenwood (£7.7m), Luke Shaw (£5.5m), Paul Pogba (£7.7m) x2 | Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.5m)
  • Bonus: Ronaldo x3, Pogba x2, Fernandes x1

RONALDO AT THE DOUBLE

Auto Draft 11

Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) scored twice and bagged 13 FPL points on his return to Manchester United as the hosts beat Newcastle United 4-1 at Old Trafford.

After going close with a couple of efforts, United’s new no. 7 opened the scoring just before half-time when he tapped in after Freddie Woodman (£4.5m) spilled Mason Greenwood’s (£7.7m) shot, and added a second on 62 minutes, as he drilled home a Luke Shaw (£5.5m) pass.

As you can see below, he did drop deep at times to link play, often drifting to the left, but lead the line well and racked up six goal attempts, five shots in the box and two big chances.

Above: Cristiano Ronaldo’s touch heatmap v Newcastle United in Gameweek 4

UNITED’S MIDFIELDERS DELIVER AGAIN

Ronaldo’s international team-mate, Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m), also got in on the act with a goal, and as a result, eight FPL points, though it is worth noting that none of his five goal attempts arrived in the box, while his expected goal involvement (xGI) total was just 0.29 against the Magpies, compared to Ronaldo’s 1.47. However, he did see more of the ball than any other player on the pitch in the final third, with 51 touches in that zone.

Paul Pogba (£7.7m) was positioned in the double pivot alongside Nemanja Matic (£4.5m), but was able to get forward and rounded off a good display with two assists, making it seven in total for the season.

Jesse Lingard (£6.9m) added a fourth in added time, having replaced Jadon Sancho (£9.2m) on 66 minutes.

After the opening four rounds, Mason Greenwood (£7.7m), Pogba and Fernandes are all tied on 31 points in FPL. Amongst all midfielders, only Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) has more, with 38.

SHAW’S CREATIVE NUMBERS

At the back, Shaw’s creativity again stood out, as he created four chances and attempted 11 crosses. In fact, after four Gameweeks, the England left-back’s three big chances created ranks second amongst all defenders, while his 56 successful final-third passes are only bettered by Joao Cancelo (£6.0m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m).

Above: Defenders ranked by big chances created 2021/22

Raphael Varane (£5.5m) also impressed, winning all three of his aerial duels and all three of his attempted tackles.

DEFENSIVE ISSUES AT NEWCASTLE

The margin of victory was perhaps a little harsh on Steve Bruce’s Newcastle, who played well for periods. However, they have now conceded 12 Premier League goals, more than any other side, and rank bottom for big chances conceded (16) and expected goals conceded (xGC) with 10.53.

“We had more than one or two opportunities [to spoil the party]. We had chances, created opportunities but I am disappointed we have given away some poor goals and that has cost us. The first goal is the big one. We deserved to be 0-0 at half time. That is the instinct, he [Cristiano Ronaldo] follows it in and my two defenders don’t and that gets him the first [goal].” – Steve Bruce

The loss of Callum Wilson (£7.4m) was a blow, with Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.5m) leading the line in his absence, though Steve Bruce did suggest he has a chance of making Friday night’s home encounter with Leeds United in Gameweek 5.

“I cannot put a timescale on it. It’ll be touch and go whether he is ready for next week.”

However, the Athletic reported on Monday morning that the Newcastle striker may be out for a month.

Saint-Maximin grabbed the assist for Javier Manquillo’s (£4.0m) equaliser, which means the Frenchman has provided an attacking return in three of his four matches so far.

MAN UTD XI: de Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Maguire, Shaw, Matic, Pogba, Greenwood (van de Beek 85), Fernandes (Martial 85), Sancho (Lingard 66), Ronaldo

NEWCASTLE XI: Woodman, Hayden, Lascelles, Clark (Lewis 84), Manquillo (Murphy 77), Willock (Hendrick 85), S Longstaff, Ritchie, Almiron, Joelinton, Saint-Maximin

CHELSEA 3-0 ASTON VILLA

  • Goals: Romelu Lukaku (£11.6m) x2, Mateo Kovacic (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Kovacic, Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.0m)
  • Bonus: Lukaku x3, Kovacic x2, Edouard Mendy (£6.0m) x1

RUTHLESS LUKAKU NETS TWICE

Romelu Lukaku (£11.6m) provided his first double-digit haul since moving to Chelsea, as he matched Ronaldo’s 13 FPL points in Gameweek 4.

The Belgian forward was not too involved in the game, registering just eight final-third touches, but provided a clinical edge that the Blues were missing last season.

His shot map since joining Thomas Tuchel’s side is exactly as expected, with 11 of his 12 goal attempts arriving in the box:

Romelu Lukaku’s 2021/22 goal attempts (shots on target in green)

ANOTHER CLEAN SHEET FOR CHELSEA

Despite the scoreline, it wasn’t a completely comfortable win for Chelsea, especially in the first half, as they had Edouard Mendy (£6.0m) to thank for keeping them ahead.

The Senegalese stopper accumulated an impressive six saves during the match, and as a result, registered his second bonus point of the season. In fact, his 16 total saves in 2021/22 is just one behind Illan Meslier’s (£5.0m) league-leading 17:

It’s now three clean sheets in four for the Blues, despite being in the bottom half of our Season Ticker over the opening four Gameweeks.

With their Champions League campaign kicking off this week, Tuchel’s rotation has already begun, with the benched Mason Mount (£7.5m) and Andreas Christensen (£5.0m) two of six changes that the Chelsea manager made. N’Golo Kante (£4.9m) was injured and Reece James (£5.6m) suspended, which meant a debut for Saul Niguez (£5.5m), though the Atletico Madrid loanee struggled to find any rhythm and was replaced at half-time by Jorginho (£6.0m).

The match also saw a fourth successive Premier League start for Marcos Alonso (£5.7m), who now sits second in the defender rankings, averaging seven FPL points per game so far.

“It was absolutely not comfortable. We played against a strong Aston Villa side, who were well prepared. They looked sharp from the start and caused us a lot of problems. We had to block a lot of shots and be wary at set-pieces, because they are strong.

I thought defensively we were very strong and did what we needed to do. Then in the second half, we were better. We were in control a lot more, we were a lot more fluid and we took our chances well.

It was a perfect result for us and of course a perfect night for our striker [Lukaku] but we know we can still improve a lot.” – Thomas Tuchel

POSITIVES FOR VILLA DESPITE LOSS

Despite a 3-0 loss, there were encouraging signs for Aston Villa, especially in the first half, when they registered eight goal attempts inside the opening 35 minutes.

Villa were without goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m) and Emiliano Buendia (£6.4m), who were both serving a quarantine period in Croatia after performing for Argentina during the international break.

Dean Smith also sprung a tactical surprise, as he lined his troops up in a 3-5-2 formation, which is one to monitor going forward.

“… we felt that was the best way to go against Chelsea they stretch the pitch very well. We just felt matching it up might help us and we’ve certainly got the athleticism in our back three so I was quite prepared to do that in this game.

The health of the squad is better than it has been. We’ve got players back from injury and Covid. We’ve strengthened in the summer which enables us to play different systems at times when we became too rigid with the system we had before.” – Dean Smith discussing his change of system and the reasons for it after the game

Villa registered 1.36 expected goals (xG) during the match with the impressive Ollie Watkins (£7.3m) accounting for 0.73 of it. With six goal attempts, five shots in the box and one big chance, it will be interesting to see if Dean Smith sticks with a two-striker system moving forward. If he does, Watkins could perhaps then become an option for our frontlines once the fixtures ease.

Jacob Ramsey (£4.5m) also impressed alongside John McGinn (£6.0m) in Villa’s engine room, with several driving runs during his 56 minutes on the pitch, while Danny Ings (£8.0m) struggled to get involved and was replaced in the second half.

Smith claimed Villa’s performance was their best of the season so far, but with Everton (h), Manchester United (a) and Tottenham Hotspur (a) up next, FPL managers will be happy to wait and monitor from afar for a little while longer.

CHELSEA XI: Mendy, Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Hudson-Odoi (Werner 82), Kovacic, Saul (Jorginho 45), Alonso, Ziyech, Havertz (Azpilicueta 64), Lukaku

ASTON VILLA XI: Steer, Konsa, Tuanzebe, Mings, Cash, Luiz (Nakamba 79), McGinn, J Ramsey (Bailey 56), Targett, Watkins, Ings (Traore 69)

Anyone else's red arrow just turn green? Also my GW3 OR just changed from 32k to 82k, I guess because 50,000 other managers also had the same amount of points as me, strange.

I was going to post a comment about this a few times but haven't.

Over the entire sat/sun, the FPL site had my gw3 overall rank wrong on the 'history' page.

I was 800k OR ending gw3 yet for the last 2 days my History page showed it as 540k

It's only this morning that it has finally changed back to 800k

It was a bug. They seem to have fixed it now. My GW3 ranking is back to what it was originally at the end of GW3 (142k), whilst up to yesterday it said ~90k incorrectly.

Have tried a few wildcard drafts and essentially the difference between my favourite drafts comes down to these combos. Which do you prefer?
    A) Lukaku + Gallagher
    B) DCL + Bamford ( +0.9 to upgrade in defence, i.e Tierney > James)

Salah and Ronaldo will cover captaincy for GW 5 and 6

Looking at Lukaku and Ronaldo's fixtures from GW7 to the end of the season they could be swapped around like this GW7-GW14 Lukaku, GW14-GW27 Ronaldo and GW27-GW38 without any real need for another big hitter for the captaincy. I know it sounds crazy not to have Salah, but do we really need him if he is not a consistent long term captaincy option. For a player to justify their price I think they need to score around 22 points per million over a season. For 12.5 million this is 275 points which without captaincy is very hard to to see anyone (except maybe Salah) getting.
Could it be possible due to fixture swings this season to have only one premium and use the funds to upgrade the team across all positions?

      • 12 Years

I think for someone like Salah you're also paying for consistent returns

Other players may get you points for less money but you have to either own them when they are blanking or be very lucky at moving them in and out at the right time. Salah will nearly always get you points, even if you don't captain him

It feels crazy to be considering not having him but he does miss Jan due to AFCON and the options at that price point in mid don't seem great.
When I build a team with 1 premium there is no other position that you need to compromise on. You can pick an amazing team.
Just something I am considering pre possible GW7 wildcard.

If Lukaku and Ronaldo rotate so well then why not just transfer between the 2? Salah still best player in the game for me. 12.5m is underpriced

No doubt he is the best in the game and will most likely score the highest points, but there will be players with much better value for money.
If you budget for your team is 83.5M (100M-subs) 1 premium leaves 72.5M for 10 players (7.25M per player) and 2 premiums would be 60M for 9 players (6.7M per player). 0.5M increase per player does not seem like much, but across 9/10 players that could be a lot of points.
2 premiums gives covers for injuries ect but that only works if the second premium has a good game on the week your first choice blanks.

Personally think you need 2 big hitters minimum. For squad structure having one in mid and one forward also helps as makes it easier to jump on and off in one transfer depending on form/fixtures. Can see your point but not sure there's enough value in the mid priced options to make going just one big hitter worth while

I think Lukaku is the best player in the game now cheaper than Salah and Ronaldo by 1m. More clinical than Salah. Lukaku is basically like a young Vardy in a better team, plus he is good in the air.
Lukaku not likely to be rested and I feel Man United have more options upfront to rest Ronaldo.

I think Ronaldo will want to play every game, he will want a golden boot or match Messi for goals. Lukaku is a beast and won't need much rest. Both are great picks but fixtures do matter even for the best.

I think Lukaku will be great but I fancy Salah to be very close or match him for goals and be more likely to assist - plus the extra point for a goal/clean sheet adds up

Fair point but I think Lukaku will hoover up bonus. And Salah normally struggles to be in bonus points.
It will be close between Ronaldo/Lukaku/Salah though. On Ronaldo I think Ole has hinted he will rest him the odd time. 'Not under pressure to start him every game' he said.

    Views on this Wildcard Team:

    Raya
    Shaw TAA Semedo
    Kovacic Salah Greenwood Raphinha Gallagher
    Lukaku Ronaldo

    Foster Duffy Williams Locadia

Didnt go Sanchez in goals as I have Duffy bought earlier in season. Tried to wedge in Bruno but rest of team looked awful. Realise Kovacic is a holding mid but still better than similar options at that price. Exact money.

It's a really nice team with 3 big hitters. I still think 2 big hitters gives you better balance but apart from a light midfield it looks decent

Despite this week's performance I think Kovacic is a poor pick. Still 2nd choice, way behind Jorginho/Kante

Not sure on Raya they have awful fixtures coming up. Would you risk Ramsdale? Or a safer Bachmann pick?

Current team (0 FT, 0.5 ITB):

    Meslier (Sanchez)
TAA - Shaw - Tierney (Amartey - Duffy)
Jota - Mbeumo - Fernandes - Son (Benrahma)
    Jiménez - Bamford - DCL

I already transfered Bamford in for Antonio.
Should I take a hit for Son? If so, who would you replace him with?

      Don’t laugh but I took a - 4 to bring in Pepe & Bamford
      for mount & Antonio
Was .1 short of straight switch.
      Really fancy Pepe until GW12

Pepe could be a great differential if Arsenal can find their flow. Brave to go early on him though.

To me the big problem with all the 7.5m mids is the rotation risk. Jota, Greenwood, Mount, Torres. It nearly makes the 3 premiums (who are big big premiums) WC make some sense. There are some decent enablers with Gallagher, Fornals, which when added to Raphina and Salah make a respectable midfield. Can even fit Trent and Reece James in with Marcel, Liveramento and Williams as great value options, the latter two who look reasonably nailed and rotate reasonably nicely.

Calf injuries tend to take longer to heal so i moved Son on. I had to do a WC (see above) as I couldnt fix my team with the 2 FT's that i had.

Son to Mane is a possibility if you wait a couple of weeks to free up the funds. Or else Son to Torres for now and change at a later point if Torres doesnt work out.

I could not afford Bamford so I decided to bench Antonio. Other cheap options are Pukki/Jimenez with a decent run of fixtures coming up. Of those three I would prefer Pukki. Armstrong an option gw8 on.

Wonder if the Spurs result was just a blip along with a wake up call?

They did start extremely well, 3 wins, 3 cleanies. Obviously attack wise non existent but perhaps Nuno will shake things up?

      • 11 Years

The first 3 results were kinda fortuitous if anything imo..were lucky not to concede in those, from an attacking perspective still missing that creative spark

    2. Andy_Social

Defence had key personnel missing, to be fair.
But my finger points solely at not Nuno, but Kane. Where is he? The modern Kane mojo is to take the game by the scruff of the neck, coming deep to get the ball. The defensive 3 midfielders wasn't such a bad option assuming Kane would be doing hard work. But he's stopped caring. What does Nuno do now? Drop him? I'd say the poor manager is screwed here - if Kane isn't in the mood, Spurs are sunk.

      1. FOO FIGHTER

If I were Nuno I would sit Kane on the bench for a couple of matches and play Scarlet.

Will put Kane in his place, he obviously has his mind on greener pastures but he is being payed a whackload every week so he needs to swallow his pride and get on with it.

Could be what Kane wants though. Let his value plummet so Levy begs City to take him on the cheap in January.

I think it was. They had a bunch of players missing, an early injury to their key CB Dier, and then went down to ten-men with the Tanganga sending off. Palace were very lucky.

If Alonso it still starting by GW7, he could be a shoe in. Anybody know exactly whats going on with Chillwell or why he is still not playing? He's not flagged as injured.

    1. Andy_Social

Alonso started because Chilli was in post-Euros holiday mode, then he took a while to get fit. Which he is now, so it is a bit odd. Let's see if he gets 90 in midweek.

Yes. Alonso was so close to scoring on the weekend, and if that goal went in he would be very popular right now.

Chelsea defense was not great on the weekend - Mendy nailed them out.

Not sure I’d blame Alonso, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see them mix it up a bit next game, though Tottenham haven’t been all that exciting.

A Journalist from the Daily Telegraph asks what has happened to Ben Chilwell, who has not played for Chelsea yet this season: "It's been difficult for him, from a Champions League win, then it was individually for him a tough Euros because he felt he could have played a part for England, Thomas Tuchel said.

"Then to keep training for four or five weeks then he had a personal break which is difficult.

"When I arrived I felt he was mentally tired which is unlucky because Marcos Alonso had a full pre-season.

"We had some talks with him and no further worries with him, he's training and he just needs to be patient. He's in the race now and with a good mental attitude."
