Calvert-Lewin injury latest as Everton’s budget FPL midfielders catch the eye

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Scout Notes from Gameweek 4 with analysis of Everton v Burnley.

EVERTON 3-1 BURNLEY

  • Goals: Michael Keane (£5.0m), Andros Townsend (£5.4m), Demarai Gray (£5.6m) | Ben Mee (£4.9m)
  • Assists: Townsend, Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.5m) x2 | Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m)
  • Bonus (projected): Townsend x3, Doucoure x2, Keane x1

CALVERT-LEWIN INJURED

Everton manager Rafa Benitez confirmed shortly before kick-off that Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) could be out for “two or three weeks”, but did warn it could be longer.

“He has broken his toe. He was training with problems and playing with pain. He had an injury the other day to his quadriceps and we have to wait two-to-three weeks, maybe more.”

Calvert-Lewin had been playing through the pain barrier but the England international now faces a spell on the sidelines, with Everton facing Aston Villa (a), Norwich City (h) and Manchester United (a) before the next international break in October.

EVERTON CHANGE SHAPE AS BUDGET MIDFIELDERS IMPRESS

As a result of Calvert-Lewin’s injury, Benitez switched to a back three formation with Richarlison (£7.5m) leading the line, flanked by Demarai Gray (£5.6m) and Andros Townsend (£5.4m).

However, Everton struggled in their new shape and lacked intensity until they moved to a 4-3-3 on the hour mark. That signalled an instant improvement, with Townsend and Gray adding to Michael Keane’s (£5.0m) earlier strike.

It’s now three goals in as matches for Gray this season, though it is worth noting that they have arrived from just three shots on target, while Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.5m) produced two assists and also had a goal disallowed for offside.

Demarai Gray’s goal attempts in 2021/22 (shots on target in green)

Meanwhile, it was a quiet night for Richarlison, who ended the match with just one goal attempt and was replaced by new-signing Salomon Rondon (£6.0m) on 81 minutes.

The Toffees won their opener against Southampton once Benitez switched his system at half-time, and his tactical changes were key to Everton remaining unbeaten once again.

BURNLEY STRUGGLE WITH EVERTON CHANGES

A well drilled Burnley side impressed for 60 minutes at Goodison Park, but struggled to cope after Everton’s changes.

Before that, Ben Mee (£4.9m) had converted from a Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m) cross, netting on his 200th Premier League appearance.

Elsewhere, Chris Wood (£6.9m) missed an early big chance, as he couldn’t get a head on a lovely Dwight McNeil (£5.9m) cross, though his off the ball movement and running in behind was good for the opening 45 minutes.

Following the defeat, Burnley are still without a win and sit 18th in the table with just one point from their opening four matches.

“We are quite a wise group and they know you have to make it happen. We had a mad six minutes which cost us. We did not respond to their leveller and it killed our performance. A lot of it was right.

The challenge you have in football is that you are searching for the first win but if you come off it a little bit, give the ball away cheaply and they score. The yardages are important when you are on top, you keep up the pressure.

Last year home and away form changed, we kept the stadium quiet but our group is wise enough to know fans change quickly. That is part of being in the Premier League.

Last season we had injuries and were stretched. The performances are not far away but the margins are tight. We are performing well as a team but we cannot keep having a soft 10 minutes against Brighton and a soft six minutes here.” – Sean Dyche

EVERTON XI: Pickford, Godfrey (Gomes 61), Keane, Mina, Coleman, Allan, Doucoure, Digne, Gray (Iwobi 88), Townsend, Richarlison (Rondon 81)

BURNLEY XI: Pope, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor, Gudmundsson (Lennon 76), Westwood, Brownhill, McNeil, Barnes (Vyrdra 76), Wood (Rodriguez 86)

    Pretty happy with my plan for a Wildcard team (activated this week), just need some advice on how best to play the next 2 weeks;

    Sanchez, 4.0
    TAA, James, Marcal, Livra, Duffy
    Salah, Jota, Raph, Sarr, Sissoko
    Ronaldo, Bamford, Antonio

    1) should I bring Jimenez in for 1 week and book in a transfer back to Antonio, or just play Duffy next week?
    2) Sarr or Gray?

FYI - Ronaldo to Lukaku booked for GW7, and Jota to swap out at some stage in the next 3-4 weeks also

      1) No not worth the plan. 2) Sarr. I think he'll come good soon has a few lovely fixtures and at a price to swap around

Just mutters something before he is being interviewed about his ‘hamstring pinging’. He just played 90 minutes against one of the best teams in Europe, half and hour of that down to 10 men’s, he said in the Yorkshire post how hard it was, and that he was dropped into midfield and chased Fabinho a lot when down to 10 men,

Twitter link covers it really, but here's the full context:

      https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000zm22 - from 09:54-ish. Only last 2 mins-ish.

      - Said both team had chances, Liverpool deserved to win

      - Said Leeds hadn't played up to their potential yet, work in progress

      - Said can't let lack of wins catch up to them and: "We've got to look to the next game and see if we can get three points"

      - Robbie Savage and Chris Sutton then make a comment on the phrase picked up at the start that his hamstring was pinging. Asked the next caller about it who said if hopes he's okay as he'd be worried without Bamford.

I like Reece James. Think he's like Cancelo in the sense that he has enough attacking threat to still be worth it even though he won't start every game. Rudiger is viable too but a bit boring.

However, this is where I am now after a hit, not ideal but I suppose Williams & Livramento have decent rotation, G2G?

    Sanchez
    Tierney - TAA - Shaw - Williams
    Raphinha - Jota - Salah - Benrahma
    Lukaku - Ronaldo

I quite like Tierney for how attacking he is and I needed somewhat of a differential where the others are highly owned, see how he fares anyways, I almost went Sá & White as well on WC, haha ah well.

    Ok a bit of planning.

I can get to the following after next week with a -4 and still have 0.8 itb (so going into wk 6). Which allows an upgrade of a defender maybe for gw7.

    Seems pretty good to me.

    Sanchez, 4.0
    TAA, Shaw, Ayling, Duffy, Livramento
    Salah, Jota, Benrahma, Smith-Rowe, Gray
    Ronaldo, Lukaku, 4.5

Which of Ronaldo & Lukaku to get first?
Which of ESR & Gray to get first?

    Any combination works.

I've wildcarded, would love some help. Can't decide between:

A: D. Gray and Reece James
    B: Sarr and Tierney

    Or another combo?

    Currently:
    Sanchez (Foster)
    TAA Shaw James Semedo (Livra)
    Salah Raphinha Torres (Gallagher, Gray)
    Lukaku Jimenez Bamford

Think you can afford a 4.5 midfielder int here and save a little money. Livra and Gallagher/Gray are great first two bench.

        Thanks mate. Good luck

I feel like Gray has the potential to completely drop off. But then again he's only 5.6. Are you planning to have him 1st spot on your bench or regular starter?

DCL -> Jimenez/Bamf. Anything else I should consider?
    Probable WC soon enough.

    Bachmann.
    Shaw, TAA, Tsimikas, Pereira.
    Salah, Benrahma, Greenwood, Gray.
    **DCL, Lukaku.
    Sanchez, Bissouma, Coufal, Antonio.

    WC dilemmas:

    - Steele or Steer/Gunn? (Sanchez main keeper)
    - James or Rudiger?
    - Semedo or Marcal?
    - Greenwood or Jota?
    - Ron + Sarr/Gray or Rom + Raph?

      Steele
      Rudiger
      Marcal
      Greenwood
Ron and Sarr (but I would want Raph in there somehow).

      - I'm probably opting against Steele with Sanchez. It's not that unreasonable to think there might be 2 other Brighton guys I want.

      - Neither? Don't think I want a Chelsea defender until after City. Is that crazy?

      - Semedo if you can afford it. Marcal seems a trap.

      - Jota for me, but I'm a Liverpool fan who has been frothing at the mouth to get him in after starting with Tsimikas.

      - Really tough. No chance you can go Ron + Raph?

Fair point on Brighton. Chelsea defence is just so good and on WC I feel like starting with one is ok given Ill want one in 2 weeks anyway. Agreed on Semedo. Jota is a tough one, waiting on Firmino news.

Ron + Raph is possible if I go for Williams over Duffy and Rudiger over James

    Steele Tsimikas Brownhill Hoever

I'm considering keeping Antonio on WC. Could easily bench him for White and Marcal this week. It's between him and Bamford.

Who are your other forwards? I think I only keep Antonio if it's him along with Bamford. See it as either both of them, or a second premium forward.

    Lukaku Antonio DCL**

    2 FT, 0.5 ITB

    a) Bruno + DCL > Ronaldo + Gallagher/Gray/Raphinha
    b) Bruno + DCL > Pogba + ASM

Almost about to pull the trigger on an early move which I hate but also gotta live a little.

    Sanchez (4.0)
    TAA, Shaw, Ayling, Duffy, Livramento
    Salah, Bruno, Greenwood, Jota, Benrahma
    Antonio, Jimenez, Perica

    2ft, 1.1itb

Bruno + Antonio > Gray + Ronaldo (leaves 2.7 itb)

Arrggghhh early moves scare me. But price changes….

Plan is to move to Lukaku in 2 weeks anyway.
        Also I agree.
        I love him.

I can do the same move with Perica and keep Antonio - but only afford a 4.5 mid.

            Yah I can’t decide.
            So I’m not doing it.

Not worth deciding now and freaking out or missing something that happens during the week.

I wish I was decisive on this stuff sometimes but it’s working out ok being patient.

Technically I missed a price rise of Gray and Duffy last week not activating my WC at the start of the IB, but I didn't know of Son's injury/whether I even wanted to.

I have a theory. FPL are manually preventing Ronaldo and Lukaku from rising in price too much so that casuals are still able to afford all their favourite new shiny toys as it keeps them engaged for longer, and if it makes them happy they'll have more customers coming back to their site for a longer time before they get bored.

        1. @persecuted_by_mods
            2 years, 6 months ago

Same, my only issue is the lack of transparency in it. Fpl should just have their own version of price rise trackers so we can all see clearly what is happening, who won't rise because of a wildcard, who is manually being adjusted etc etc

Then that would be just a 0.1 rise. He ought to be rising 0.3 over the week, imo. Needs to start tomorrow.

Price changes have always been heavily manipulated by FPL. A lot are just unwilling to accept/admit it. Whenever anything unusual happens you usually just hear the "must be wildcards" excuse, despite other rises/falls happening.

Possible. But after FPL stats were able to calculate the impact of WC:s after deadline CR7 dropped to around +80% Their algorithm is not trying to guess the impact of WC:s to certain players. Getting in both Lukaku and CR7 demands basically WC. So we haven't seen anything unnatural yet.
