Calvert-Lewin injury latest as Everton’s budget FPL midfielders catch the eye

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Scout Notes from Gameweek 4 with analysis of Everton v Burnley.

EVERTON 3-1 BURNLEY

  • Goals: Michael Keane (£5.0m), Andros Townsend (£5.4m), Demarai Gray (£5.6m) | Ben Mee (£4.9m)
  • Assists: Townsend, Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.5m) x2 | Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m)
  • Bonus (projected): Townsend x3, Doucoure x2, Keane x1

CALVERT-LEWIN INJURED

Everton manager Rafa Benitez confirmed shortly before kick-off that Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) could be out for “two or three weeks”, but did warn it could be longer.

“He has broken his toe. He was training with problems and playing with pain. He had an injury the other day to his quadriceps and we have to wait two-to-three weeks, maybe more.”

Calvert-Lewin had been playing through the pain barrier but the England international now faces a spell on the sidelines, with Everton facing Aston Villa (a), Norwich City (h) and Manchester United (a) before the next international break in October.

EVERTON CHANGE SHAPE AS BUDGET MIDFIELDERS IMPRESS

As a result of Calvert-Lewin’s injury, Benitez switched to a back three formation with Richarlison (£7.5m) leading the line, flanked by Demarai Gray (£5.6m) and Andros Townsend (£5.4m).

However, Everton struggled in their new shape and lacked intensity until they moved to a 4-3-3 on the hour mark. That signalled an instant improvement, with Townsend and Gray adding to Michael Keane’s (£5.0m) earlier strike.

It’s now three goals in as matches for Gray this season, though it is worth noting that they have arrived from just three shots on target, while Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.5m) produced two assists and also had a goal disallowed for offside.

Demarai Gray’s goal attempts in 2021/22 (shots on target in green)

Meanwhile, it was a quiet night for Richarlison, who ended the match with just one goal attempt and was replaced by new-signing Salomon Rondon (£6.0m) on 81 minutes.

The Toffees won their opener against Southampton once Benitez switched his system at half-time, and his tactical changes were key to Everton remaining unbeaten once again.

BURNLEY STRUGGLE WITH EVERTON CHANGES

A well drilled Burnley side impressed for 60 minutes at Goodison Park, but struggled to cope after Everton’s changes.

Before that, Ben Mee (£4.9m) had converted from a Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m) cross, netting on his 200th Premier League appearance.

Elsewhere, Chris Wood (£6.9m) missed an early big chance, as he couldn’t get a head on a lovely Dwight McNeil (£5.9m) cross, though his off the ball movement and running in behind was good for the opening 45 minutes.

Following the defeat, Burnley are still without a win and sit 18th in the table with just one point from their opening four matches.

“We are quite a wise group and they know you have to make it happen. We had a mad six minutes which cost us. We did not respond to their leveller and it killed our performance. A lot of it was right.

The challenge you have in football is that you are searching for the first win but if you come off it a little bit, give the ball away cheaply and they score. The yardages are important when you are on top, you keep up the pressure.

Last year home and away form changed, we kept the stadium quiet but our group is wise enough to know fans change quickly. That is part of being in the Premier League.

Last season we had injuries and were stretched. The performances are not far away but the margins are tight. We are performing well as a team but we cannot keep having a soft 10 minutes against Brighton and a soft six minutes here.” – Sean Dyche

EVERTON XI: Pickford, Godfrey (Gomes 61), Keane, Mina, Coleman, Allan, Doucoure, Digne, Gray (Iwobi 88), Townsend, Richarlison (Rondon 81)

BURNLEY XI: Pope, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor, Gudmundsson (Lennon 76), Westwood, Brownhill, McNeil, Barnes (Vyrdra 76), Wood (Rodriguez 86)

I went for an early transfer and did DCL to Bamford. No way Bamford is injured too now?!

Play Allan away to Villa or White away to Burnley?

Feel like Allan will get 3 points at most, whereas there is CS potential with White. Thoughts?

Although I prefer to play midfielders ahead of defenders, but in this case White probably- even though he can easily concede against Burnley.

      Surely White

    Sanchez
    TAA | Shaw | Duffy
    Salah | Raphinha | Sarr | Gray
    Ronaldo | Lukaku | Jimenez

    Steele | Livramento | Williams | Allan

    87 points. 0.0 ITB.
Transfer thought is Sanchez to Ramsdale to both avoid double Brighton and find a greater differential. However, most likely I'll do nothing.
    Thoughts?

yes, although I think most have raphinha, gray scored and then there's sarr who's coming up against the 3 worst defences in his next 3.

yeh I believe so too, Gray was probably the most speculative but scoring again this gw cements that selection some more.

Definitely roll the transfer. Great team but god knows how you managed to have the balls to not have Antonio going into GW4.

That would be from not owning him for the entire season.
After his start, I just had to ride the unique of not having him as trading him in would give me no gain. At least that's how I try and play.

    What should be the priority?

    A. Raphinha for free, worry about Ronaldo/TAA later
    B. TAA for Alonso/Shaw, -4, hold on to Antonio
    C. Ronaldo+5.4 mid for Antonio+Greenwood, -8, destroy the team
    D. WC and get TAA, Salah, Ronaldo and Lukaku

Bissouma. It'll be a slightly more balanced team.

        Alonso Shaw White/Coufal
        Salah Greenwood Jota Raphinha Torres

5.4 mid not a great price point, plus I hate a -8, so no C. I think A is fine, and D is too if you want to go that route. I WC'ed this week myself. I had Salah and TAA already but other problems and didn't like my structure. Got Luk and Ron and will play 3-5-2 for a few weeks

TAA is the third highest posts scorer in the game at the moment and gets both attacking & clean sheet points, playing for a team joint top of the table … and … only costs 7.5 mill.

If you don’t have him I would say that is your priority 😉

B for Alonso. Chilwell is "mentally" ready now apparently and TAA is TAA. A simple must!

    2. Casual Player

      Might be this:

“The left-back banked two assists despite not creating a single chance in Opta’s eyes: a Marcal cross was first turned into his own net by Francisco Sierralta (£4.4m), before the Portuguese defender’s blocked shot was converted by debutant substitute Hee-Chang Hwang (£5.5m).”

They were also his first 2 attacking returns ever.

Wolves have great fixtures so he’s not a bad shout, but Semedo costs 0.3 and looks more likely in attack and Coady costs 0.1 less and looks as likely for attack returns and arguably has more BP potential

      1. waldo666

Semedo cant score to save his life, I'd rather save 0.3.
Marcal plays wing back and almost scored this week, Coady is a boring pick IMO.

He does not have to do it this week to be worth it. But he might do it! And next week he could use his FT on something else which can get him more points. And so on. If you understand what I mean.

How does this WC team look? Traore and Bamford is my only little concern. But their fixtures are juicy, especially compared to the alternatives!

      Sanchez - Steele
      TAA - Ayling - Marcal - Livramento -
      Williams
      Salah - Torres - Traore - Gray - Sissoko
      Lukaku - Ronaldo - Bamford

Many would maybe go for Antonio and Gallagher instead. But since Antonio is suspended and Gallagher plays Liverpool this GW, I'll go for a litte punt.

Bamford > Ings GW8 looks good. And I could do Traore > Gallagher any time (or Sarr).

Would you go Sissoko or McArthur? It doesn't matter that much, but you'll never know. Will most likely always be on the bench, and not even first on the bench.

Will keep an eye on the possible Bamford injury.

I will, but not until I find someone I feel will deliver. The founds in Luka/Ronaldo will get me a lot of pts. Don't see how I could match that right now.

            • 8 Years

True, especially if Gray and co continue to deliver. I just see people removing one to get mid/high price mids again at some stage. But true options are limited or not delivering in that bracket. I like Sarrs next three games over Traore like you mention. Three plum fixtures and Adama is all fart no poo

    • Postman Ty
      • 9 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

      Sanchez - Bachmann
      TAA - Marcal - Ayling - (Livramento - Williams)
      Salah - Raphinha - Gray - Gallagher - (Bissouma)
      Lukaku - Ronaldo - Bamford

Quite inflexible, but I do like it. Bamford gives me an easy swap back to Antonio. Ronaldo/Salah/Lukaku can always be dropped to upgrade anyone to essentially anyone else. Two playing 4.0 defenders seems too good to pass up. Budget mids all looking solid, not too keen on all the question marks around the 7-8m mids. Rotating keepers not for everyone but it gives great fixtures all season. Need a way to get James in somehow: probably downgrading one of the big hitters to get James and upgrade one of the mids.

      Thoughts?

Any money in the bank? You could downgrade two out of Ayling/Marcal/Sanchez/Bachmann, and upgrade Ayling/Marcal to James.

You could also downgrade one midfielder to 4.5m and go 4-3-3. Some good value, and Livramento/Williams has really good fixtures ahead, could easily play one of them every week in a back four.

0.0m itb unfortunately. Dropping Bachmann is something to consider. Only need 4 playing defenders really but would be 0.1m off with that. I think Bamford down to Jiminez would be the easier option but not too keen until I see some form from him. With the fixtures a 4-3-3 isn't the worst idea, but the way Everton have done me I'm a bit over fixtures, needless to say for budget options.

I think the odds that Gray and Gallagher continue to (over)perform are declining and slim.

Proper balance and depth means not putting all your eggs in one basket. Which is like having 3 premiums IMO.

Yes there are some short term gains to be had but realistically it’s never really worked long term.

There may be a better argument to go more solid at the back and lighter in midfield.

Then again I’ve quite happy with a 3-5-2 set up this past month

Gray was very borderline for me until the inevitable goal against Burnley. I don't expect him to continue scoring every game but he's got the confidence right now so I would like to ride the wave a little. Gallagher wasn't really interesting to me until I saw him taking all of their set pieces last game, then he went on to get the two assists. Again don't expect him to return every game but expect him to tick along at a really low price. Definitely lacking in price points is the issue with 3 premiums; one injury could throw it all off.

      Current team 2.3ITB 1FT currently 120k OR

      Sanchez
      TAA Shaw White Ayling
      Salah Raphina Sarr Greenwood Benrahma
      Ronaldo

      Forster Tsimiakas Street Antonio

      GW5- Benrahma >>> Gray
      GW6- Save
GW7- Ronaldo and Street >>> Lukaku and Bamford
      GW8- Shaw >>> James

GW8 team with free transfers no wc used yet :

      Sanchez
      TAA James White/Ayling
      Salah Raphina Greenwood Sarr/Gray
      Lukaku Bamford Antonio

      Forster Sarr/Gray White/Ayling Tsimikas

Gives me a very flexible team that can handle occasional benching (etc Greenwood eventually).
Bit of a benching headache with the front 8 but it feels right. They have a few tricky fixtures in between that I can rotate. (Sarr vs Liv GW8. If needed to upgrade anywhere I can easily downgrade an attacker. The fixtures up until GW10/11 looks good enough for this team but feel Greenwood would need to go by then. Wc in the pocket to help if it fails. Thought with the front 8 my team would be different to others. No Jota is painful with tsimikas but jus gna hope firmino is back soon for my sake :(.

Thank you for your thoughts. Jus wanted to share a different approach. Cheers!

Semedo to coady and you've 1.2. Maybe keep that money in case Jota does drop to the bench. Or punt on Gallagher a tasty bench option

Best 3rd Chelsea option from GW7 onwards? Given that Lukaku and Reece/Rudiger are the first 2.

Not having Shaw isn’t a mistake to me but Challobah won’t start much at all. Waste of a pick to me.
Christensen is the cheap option to go for. But even he has a rotation risk.

I’d downgrade your 8th attacker - whoever you consider that to be and upgrade your defense.

This week would be for a hit and I’ve already taken a -4. whu not an easy fixture either. Kane has been poor but I reckon he can grab a goal - loves a derby!

When does FPL site deduct the 8ph I took? Would have thought it would be done by now?
        Thanks!

Just linked the team. Appreciate your feedback. Still think the 8ph should have been deducted. Maybe I'm wrong. Thanks

GW4...5 hasn't started mate. I took 8ph and it is not showing on my final score. Just wondering why? (Would prefer it never does of course!).

I see what you are showing...hit only shows in final pts total. Not in GW points. Think I get it now. Thanks for your patience Sir!

Some people get top GW score with -40.

LOL not for me. Am mostly conservative. Took a big chance this week. Luckily it paid off.
                          Hope your week went well.

GW score doesn't include hits, but season total should do.

Swap Benrahma to Stuart Dallas (don't have the funds for Raphinha)?

        Pros:
        - Leeds have a great schedule for 6 weeks
        - Dallas played well vs Newcastle last season
        - Unlike Benrahma, Dallas won't be playing midweek games
        - frees up 0.8 in cash

        Cons:
        - United are vulnerable to shots from deep (which Benrahma can do)
        - West Ham's fixtures aren't actually that bad after next week
        - Might lose a few $ in transfer value if I decide to bring Benrahma back in

Dallas could be forced to play right back.
Hasn't been in his best form either.

Would love people's opinion/thoughts on a couple of things that are confusing me:

        1) What's the big attraction with Bamford? Not exactly setting the world alight and seems to regularly miss/stuff up a lot of chances. Far from a prolific finisher.

        2) No one mentioning Edouard? Is this solely due to him playing for CPL and their fixtures? Scored well over 20 goals in each of his last 3 SPL seasons and got 2 in 6 minutes against Spurs. Seems good value for a punt. Am I missing something?

If you like Palace's next 6 fixtures then sure, I am not one.

Bamford has hard some tough games but is a proven PL goal scorer in an attacking team without much competition and will soon be serviced by Raphina & Dam James

The Palace lad is far from nailed and scored against a woeful Spurs with their two center halves off the pitch and down to 10 men.

It’s probably a bit early to judge ?

          1) Fixtures and possibility of improvement. Pre-WC punt for me.

          2) Fixtures and possibility of not getting starts over Benteke, yet. 2 goals against 10 men, would like to see more.

Bamford was very good in his first full PL season. Slow start though.

Edouard has had a good start against 10 man Spurs. SPL is well below PL standard.

I like Edouard. Its either him or Jimenez. If rotated you get the home fixtures out of him.

For starters, Edouard is not gonna play against a game chasing 10 men team everyweek.

          Thanks all.
Agree Edouard is a wait and see and Spurs were shocking. I forgot they only had 10 men on the pitch for his goals.

Are these transfers worth doing for -4?

        Antonio & Barnes >> Bamford & Gray

63 points yet another red arrow, DCL turning into Livramento & Duffy points for many.
Have to deal with Dier & Antonio as well this week.

        Tough times..

        Sanchez - Steele
TAA - Shaw- Ayling - Dier - Ome
        Jota - Benrhama - Salah - Gilmour - Raph
        CR7 - Antonio - Ings

        1 FT , 0.5 in the bank.
        What would you do ?

Leaning towards Dier to Marcal, wanna switch Benehama, dont know who to get..

Gilmour didnt start this week, Zimmerman might be back it seems. Dont wanna play with 10 men, dont fancy Marcal for the next 10 games?

Marcal is good and if you are unsure about Gilmour's gametime, then Dier to Marcal makes sense.

Zimmerman is the 5th choice CB behind Kabak, Gibson, Hanley & Omobamidele.

          Not a big problem there.

Dier to Semedo should be fine.
Next week Ben and Antonio have a good fixture. Should be fine.
