Calvert-Lewin injury latest as Everton’s budget FPL midfielders catch the eye

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Scout Notes from Gameweek 4 with analysis of Everton v Burnley.

EVERTON 3-1 BURNLEY

  • Goals: Michael Keane (£5.0m), Andros Townsend (£5.4m), Demarai Gray (£5.6m) | Ben Mee (£4.9m)
  • Assists: Townsend, Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.5m) x2 | Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m)
  • Bonus (projected): Townsend x3, Doucoure x2, Keane x1

CALVERT-LEWIN INJURED

Everton manager Rafa Benitez confirmed shortly before kick-off that Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) could be out for “two or three weeks”, but did warn it could be longer.

“He has broken his toe. He was training with problems and playing with pain. He had an injury the other day to his quadriceps and we have to wait two-to-three weeks, maybe more.”

Calvert-Lewin had been playing through the pain barrier but the England international now faces a spell on the sidelines, with Everton facing Aston Villa (a), Norwich City (h) and Manchester United (a) before the next international break in October.

EVERTON CHANGE SHAPE AS BUDGET MIDFIELDERS IMPRESS

As a result of Calvert-Lewin’s injury, Benitez switched to a back three formation with Richarlison (£7.5m) leading the line, flanked by Demarai Gray (£5.6m) and Andros Townsend (£5.4m).

However, Everton struggled in their new shape and lacked intensity until they moved to a 4-3-3 on the hour mark. That signalled an instant improvement, with Townsend and Gray adding to Michael Keane’s (£5.0m) earlier strike.

It’s now three goals in as matches for Gray this season, though it is worth noting that they have arrived from just three shots on target, while Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.5m) produced two assists and also had a goal disallowed for offside.

Demarai Gray’s goal attempts in 2021/22 (shots on target in green)

Meanwhile, it was a quiet night for Richarlison, who ended the match with just one goal attempt and was replaced by new-signing Salomon Rondon (£6.0m) on 81 minutes.

The Toffees won their opener against Southampton once Benitez switched his system at half-time, and his tactical changes were key to Everton remaining unbeaten once again.

BURNLEY STRUGGLE WITH EVERTON CHANGES

A well drilled Burnley side impressed for 60 minutes at Goodison Park, but struggled to cope after Everton’s changes.

Before that, Ben Mee (£4.9m) had converted from a Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m) cross, netting on his 200th Premier League appearance.

Elsewhere, Chris Wood (£6.9m) missed an early big chance, as he couldn’t get a head on a lovely Dwight McNeil (£5.9m) cross, though his off the ball movement and running in behind was good for the opening 45 minutes.

Following the defeat, Burnley are still without a win and sit 18th in the table with just one point from their opening four matches.

“We are quite a wise group and they know you have to make it happen. We had a mad six minutes which cost us. We did not respond to their leveller and it killed our performance. A lot of it was right.

The challenge you have in football is that you are searching for the first win but if you come off it a little bit, give the ball away cheaply and they score. The yardages are important when you are on top, you keep up the pressure.

Last year home and away form changed, we kept the stadium quiet but our group is wise enough to know fans change quickly. That is part of being in the Premier League.

Last season we had injuries and were stretched. The performances are not far away but the margins are tight. We are performing well as a team but we cannot keep having a soft 10 minutes against Brighton and a soft six minutes here.” – Sean Dyche

EVERTON XI: Pickford, Godfrey (Gomes 61), Keane, Mina, Coleman, Allan, Doucoure, Digne, Gray (Iwobi 88), Townsend, Richarlison (Rondon 81)

BURNLEY XI: Pope, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor, Gudmundsson (Lennon 76), Westwood, Brownhill, McNeil, Barnes (Vyrdra 76), Wood (Rodriguez 86)

      I'll try mine:

      Sanchez
      TAA - James - Marcal - Duffy - Livra
      Gallagher - Salah - Jota - Traore - Gray
Lukaku - big Ron - Archer

The Gray + Gallagher duo does feel a little shaky though, but it usually is easier to downgrade and spread the cash than to find cash for upgrades.

    On wildcard

    A) Sa + Arsenal defender
    B) Ramsdale + Wolves defender
    C) Avoid Arsenal defence and go with 4.5m keeper like Guita

besides the 25% ownership, not so keen on Sanchez with their fixture run

Yeah the masses will jump on the "Arsenal are crap" wagon and whilst trust me I've enjoyed bantering at my mates, their fixtures have turned, their first choice defence is back, they have no Europe and you can invest for minimal price.

Dcl owners who are moving to bam are you still moving ahead despite the thing about his hamstring or going to wait until near the deadline ? Think I’m right in saying dcl won’t drop in price because of red flag?

I think he just said that at the end of the game his hamstring was ‘pinging’ which is probably just a bit of fatigue but anyway I’m inclined to wait for pressers even if it means losing 0.1

It was fine this week, they both went off and mid priced strikers blanked,

It will be a different tune when we inevitably get a weekend where 1 or both of them blank and the likes of Antonio, bamford knock in a big haul

you'd imagine Rom max 2 goals in the next 2 vs tot MCI. Comes down to owing one (Ronaldo) and whether you're prepared to jump off for gw7
I think the man city gw6-7 vs che liv opens this up

Tearing them a new one, as in a treble return or hattrick would be fairly suprising (not impossible though)

But scoring or assisting would not be a suprise at all

Of course I know this will happen a few times during the season, no doubt about it. But you're basically owning 3 players who are genuinely capable of hitting more than 250 points this season, if they avoid any long-term injuries. They're some of the best captaincy options in the game and will fight for the Golden Boot between each other.

Also Raphinha with (new,WHM,WAT,sou,WOL,nor), no European distractions, and a Leeds team that are surely doing inquests as we speak in a bid to hit the reset button & get some points on the board

      Livra slam dunk 5th defender

But White is worth the 0.4 over Williams in that crucial 4th defender/first sub/rotating cheap defender slot imo

      1. Arteta
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 7 months ago

Yeah I agree, his time will come soon. I think Leeds in general should bounce back with kind schedule and go back to the old ways.

It's a pity he didn't drop to 4.3 because that would be such a bargain. Actually I might end up with White or Tierney as my 3rd defender and that why I didn't mention him.

Here's a slightly different WC team I'm considering switching to
    Mendy/4.0
    White/TAA/Ayling/Marcal/Williams
    Salah/Gray/Torres/Raphinha/4.5
    Ronaldo/Lukaku/4.5
0.7 ITB to switch Torres to someone else once his form drops
Mendy gets CS almost every game, gets in a few saves too, plus no Tuchel rotation risk, going with the cheapest Arsenal defender
    Thoughts?

I thought that too but now I am switching between my 4.5 mids and defenders instead depending upon fixtures to see who will be my 10th & 11th selection each week and deciding who is benched, which is by far less stressful than transfers to move Ronaldo to Lukakau/Kane or Salah to Bruno/KdB and the like 🙂

Value question: I bought Bamford last night for DCL. If his price rises today or in the next few days and then I WC, do I have to pay the extra on him even though I already transferred him in? I had a doubt because it resets any hits or FTs made when you WC.

How sustainable do we think these 5.5m midfielders from Everton’s output will be?
They’ve had an easy run against poor defences, with Brighton arguably the only team that’s relatively difficult.

The xGI is definitely being outperformed by the lot of them. Is that a feat. we think is sustainable by these players finishing abilities as well as Everton producing attacking football? Or is it more disguised as a form of luck so far?

      1. @persecuted_by_mods
          2 years, 7 months ago

Its the Rafa effect, he's a master tactician and has set them up to play to their strengths. While they can't sustain what is happening they will still be value for money

worth a punt I think, his underlying stats are great and wolves have great fixtures

I just can't get my head around trusting those cheaper midfielders to be consistent. Gray maybe, but not the others.

Think I would drop one of Traore and Sarr and go for another premium defender. Midfield seems too punty

I have used my FT already for DCL to Bamford. My current team is:

          Bachmann
          TAA, Shaw, White, Amartey
          Salah, Jota, Greenwood, Benrahma
          Lukaku, Bamford
          (Foster, Livra, Allan, Antonio)

Clearly fourth position defence is weak now, as I have Amartey or Livra to choose between to cover for Antonio.

Is is worth taking a -4 to do Amartey to Marcal (or could also afford a 5m if necessary) or Allan to a 5.5m or less mid? (was considering Kovacic as a punt)

Have DCL and Antonio and 1 FT.

Planning on keeping Antonio and DCL out. Already have 3 Wolves so can't be Jiminez.

On that basis - it's Bamford in, right?

Yeah Bamford. Better option than Jiménez anyway. Everyone seems to have missed the threat of Hwang

I don't think this either - but maybe subbed off more. And from what i've seen Jiminez just doesn't look on it yet. I'd rather wait on him, whereas expect some returns from Bamford over the next few

Best DCL replacement? For a -4?

          Have 3 Wolves
          Have Ronaldo
          Can’t afford Lukaku
          Have Bamford.

Hmmm. Auba or Vardy possible? Otherwise Saint-Maximin?

Maybe bench him and try to move to a mid later

Antonio if you can hold on the bench for a week.
Probably Richarlson if not, but to be honest he feels like a transfer out waiting to happen.
Could gamble on someone like Jesus if you can afford it

Same, I also took DCL out for Bamford today, personally Amartey to Marcal looks decent for a -4 considering the fixtures, and Allan to 5.5 mid isn't really worth it at this stage imo, especially for a -4.

If you are planning Marcal in your team long-term, I think that move for -4 is fine
