Enter the €250k FanTeam Champions League Group Stage tournament and get your FFS Membership free

Sponsored by FanTeam

The UEFA Champions League is back tonight – and by the end of the group stage, you could be €50k richer!

Fantasy managers can put their European football knowledge to the test in FanTeam’s €250K Champions League Group Stage game, which comes with a guaranteed first prize of €50,000.

And not only that, we’ve got an offer for new and existing FanTeam customers whereby you can get your Fantasy Football Scout Premium Membership for free!

As the name of the game suggests, there is a total of €250,000 in the kitty, with the top 1,250 managers walking away with cash prizes.

With a maximum of 15,060 entries permitted and, at the time of writing, only around 8,000 teams currently entered, the odds are favourable for those who know their Sheriff Tiraspols from their Shakhtars.

Entries cost just €20 (£16.80), a sum that many of us will have readily forked out in our Fantasy Premier League mini-leagues in the past.

Up to 100 teams per user are allowed, too.

Even better: the game rules and scoring system are very similar to FPL, so skills are easily transferred from one game to the other.

So if you’ve ever wanted to own both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in your Fantasy side – now you can!

JOSH’S UCL TEAM SELECTION

Josh Wooldridge, the winner of last season’s €250,000 first-place prize in FanTeam’s season-long Premier League game, has been chatting with Az over on our YouTube channel.

They have been discussing team selection for FanTeam’s Champions League Fantasy game, which you can view above.

HOW TO PLAY: A BRIEF GUIDE

  • Slightly from FPL, FanTeam Champions League managers build a team of 11 players that includes at least one goalkeeper, three defenders, two midfielders and one forward.
  • Safety Net feature: If your player doesn’t start, he will be replaced by a starting teammate in the same position whose value closely matches the original selection (descending prices only).
  • A maximum of three players from a single Champions League club can be picked, with the budget for the initial squad set at 100.0m.
  • A captain is chosen to earn double points, with a nominated vice-captain scoring double if the captain doesn’t play.
  • Two free transfers are allowed every Gameweek, with each additional transfer costing minus four points. Managers can roll a maximum of two Gameweek transfers forward but can never have more than four free transfers in their locker.

With only the group stage covered in FanTeam‘s game, there is no need to worry about long-term planning for the knockout rounds, price changes or chip strategy: it’s simply a six-Gameweek tournament, which runs from mid-September to early December.

For a rule breakdown of the rules, see the above image.

SCORING SYSTEM

Seasoned FPL managers, or those playing FanTeam’s €1m season-long Premier League game, should have no problem in adjusting to the €250K Champions League Group Stage game.

The familiar scoring system is shown above, with the minor differences outlined below.

KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FANTEAM AND FPL
  • There is no Bonus Points System, which is replaced by plus/minus points (+0.3/-0.3) if a team is winning/losing during the period a player is on the pitch.
  • Goalkeepers get 0.5 points for every save made, unlike the one point awarded in FPL for increments of three stops.
  • Committing a foul that leads to a free-kick goal or converted penalty is penalised by minus two points.
  • Midfielders and forwards get an extra point for completing the full match.
  • Each shot on target is rewarded (+0.4 for forwards/midfielders, +0.6 for defenders, +1.0 for goalkeepers).

    A) Benrahma Ronaldo
    B) Gray Lukaku

      A. Easily. Ron and Trent are the absolute essentials. Armband stays routed on Ron, no matter who he plays. Like 13 years ago. The 'last' time I did relatively well at this game.

Part of the fun for me. Deciphering FPL Stats is having the knowledge to take them on when you think they're wrong is far more of a skill than being spoonfed.

It's still spoonfeeding, though. I often think that there would be far less of a template if the price prediction sites didn't exist. Or even weren't so close to being accurate.

Well done! I was 627 once after a GW2 and it went rapidly downhill from there for me!!

Currently, I’m 31k and enjoying it. Reigning the transfers in like you as I normally go hit mad and knee jerk regularly. Although I played my WC areas of GW4 I’m playing a more patient game this season.

Went without R7 or Lukaku this week and still managed to finish on a respectable score. My plan was always to bring in Lukaku for GW7.

I now need to get rid of DCL so wondering if I can still survive until GW7 without big Rom. Bringing him in early would mean a -4 but I could just switch to Bamford for free.......

    Any thoughts?

      Just bring in lukaku now

Ultimately everyone is bouncing off the mid bracket spots failing- premium spots (easy fixtures) doing their thing and enablers looking promising

It’ll quickly turn around when enablers die out - premiums don’t excel and mid price assets bounce back!

    RMT WC:

    Krul (4.0)
    Laporte - Trent - Tierney - Duffy - Livramento
    Salah - Jota - Raphina - Traoré - McArthur
    Ronaldo - Lukaku - Scarlett

    0.4 ITB

I feel it's a pretty balanced team even with both Lukaku and Ronaldo. Leeds and Wolves has great fixtures, so I believe in Raphina and Traoré as third and fourth mids. Also, Norwich has good fixtures and Krul will always have a lot to do (I had Sanchez since start). What you think??

    Wildcards: Rom+Ron or Ron-Rom?

Been tinkering with this for a while trying to figure out which way to go.

    Option 1 :
    Sanchez Steele
    TAA James Marcal* (Livramento Williams)
    Salah Sarr* Gallagher* Gray (Sissoko)
    Ronaldo Lukaku* Antonio
    0.0m ITB

    Option 2:
    Sanchez Steele
    TAA James Shaw* (Livramento Williams)
    Salah Greenwood* Raphinha* Gray (Sissoko)
    Ronaldo Bamford* Antonio

So essentially Lukaku, Sarr, Gallagher, Marcal vs Bamford, Greenwood, Raphinha, Shaw (Greenwood could be Jota, not decided on that yet).

Leaning towards option 2 I think. I do want Lukaku now but it looks like too much of a compromise. Would also be really difficult to get 3 Chelsea players in GW7. With option 2 and 2FT it's just Shaw > Rudiger and Ronaldo > Lukaku.

What do we reckon about the below first pass at a TAA, Salah, Ronny and Lukaku WC:

    Sanchez, (£4m)
    TAA, Coufal, Marcal, (Duffy, Livramore)
    SAlah, Greenwood, Raphinha, Benrahma, Gray
    Ronny, Lukaku (£4.5m)

Only player I'm not too keen on is Benrahma but not sure what the alternative is, Traore maybe but I'm not convinced yet?

    1. Mr-Inbetween
      • 12 Years

It's a nice draft, but as you'd expect having those players you'll have a pretty weak bench.

    2. Pukki Pies
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member
      • 3 Years

Looks good. Only problem with going 3-5-2 is you end up with a bench player who never plays.

Could downgrade Benrahma to Gallagher and upgrade Coufal to James/Rudiger? Not many options around that price point. Sarr has good fixtures but no much form as yet. I'm steering clear of Traore for now personally.

      1. Arfaish
        • 11 Years
        2 years, 7 months ago

Yeah Gallagher has looked good to be fair and I really do like the look of James so that could be the shout. I agree it feels too early for Traore and Sarr doesn't grab me. Thanks.

    4. Boberella
      • 7 Years
      2 years, 7 months ago

Yeah, I’d do Benrahma to Gallagher, possibly Duffy to Williams for an extra 0.2m then get a playing 3rd striker. Dennis or punt on Hwang

      1. Arfaish
        • 11 Years
        2 years, 7 months ago

Duffy to Williams would only be £0.1m for me sadly which I don't think is worth it as Brighton are the more solid team. I'm not bothered about having a playing third striker so the Gallagher saving would be used on upgrading either Coufal or Marcal.

Coufal was actually a Cresswell downgrade to fund Gray so Shaw doesn't worry me as ive bee without him from the start, id prefer either James or Cresswell to him.

    RMWCT
    Sanchez 4.0 fodder
    TAA Shaw ayling Marcal Williams
Salah Gray raphinha Torres 4.5 fodder
    Ronaldo Lukaku 4.5

    0.4 ITB
Giving ayling couple of weeks to get CSs, otherwise shifting him for James & selling Torres to fund it

    Thoughts?

I’d probably go a Wolves defensive double up and eat Coady over Ayling. Can’t trust Leeds for a clean sheet.

What does anyone think about Pepe? Seems like he could be an interesting option with decent fixtures ahead...

      Could be a nice punt.

So my original plan was always to do CR7 > Lukaku in GW7 after the fixture swing, but realistically I can't see myself being able to get rid of Ronny.. what could/would be my best options in bringing him in GW7?

I've debated doing Bamford, Jota & Torres > Lukaku, Gray & Gallagher but can't help but think that is way too much of a jumping on a train at the wrong time and surely Gray/Gallagher's points have to dry up at some point, any suggestions on how I could get Lukaku in without losing Salah/Ron?

    Sanchez
    Rudiger - Trent - Marcal
    Salah - Torres - Jota - Traore
    CR7 - Bamford - Antonio

Bench: Steele - Livramento - Williams & Sissoko 0.5m in the bank & used my WC.
