Sponsored by FanTeam

The UEFA Champions League is back tonight – and by the end of the group stage, you could be €50k richer!

Fantasy managers can put their European football knowledge to the test in FanTeam’s €250K Champions League Group Stage game, which comes with a guaranteed first prize of €50,000.

And not only that, we’ve got an offer for new and existing FanTeam customers whereby you can get your Fantasy Football Scout Premium Membership for free!

As the name of the game suggests, there is a total of €250,000 in the kitty, with the top 1,250 managers walking away with cash prizes.

With a maximum of 15,060 entries permitted and, at the time of writing, only around 8,000 teams currently entered, the odds are favourable for those who know their Sheriff Tiraspols from their Shakhtars.

Entries cost just €20 (£16.80), a sum that many of us will have readily forked out in our Fantasy Premier League mini-leagues in the past.

Up to 100 teams per user are allowed, too.

Even better: the game rules and scoring system are very similar to FPL, so skills are easily transferred from one game to the other.

So if you’ve ever wanted to own both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in your Fantasy side – now you can!

JOSH’S UCL TEAM SELECTION

Josh Wooldridge, the winner of last season’s €250,000 first-place prize in FanTeam’s season-long Premier League game, has been chatting with Az over on our YouTube channel.

They have been discussing team selection for FanTeam’s Champions League Fantasy game, which you can view above.

HOW TO PLAY: A BRIEF GUIDE

  • Slightly from FPL, FanTeam Champions League managers build a team of 11 players that includes at least one goalkeeper, three defenders, two midfielders and one forward.
  • Safety Net feature: If your player doesn’t start, he will be replaced by a starting teammate in the same position whose value closely matches the original selection (descending prices only).
  • A maximum of three players from a single Champions League club can be picked, with the budget for the initial squad set at 100.0m.
  • A captain is chosen to earn double points, with a nominated vice-captain scoring double if the captain doesn’t play.
  • Two free transfers are allowed every Gameweek, with each additional transfer costing minus four points. Managers can roll a maximum of two Gameweek transfers forward but can never have more than four free transfers in their locker.

With only the group stage covered in FanTeam‘s game, there is no need to worry about long-term planning for the knockout rounds, price changes or chip strategy: it’s simply a six-Gameweek tournament, which runs from mid-September to early December.

For a rule breakdown of the rules, see the above image.

SCORING SYSTEM

Seasoned FPL managers, or those playing FanTeam’s €1m season-long Premier League game, should have no problem in adjusting to the €250K Champions League Group Stage game.

The familiar scoring system is shown above, with the minor differences outlined below.

KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FANTEAM AND FPL
  • There is no Bonus Points System, which is replaced by plus/minus points (+0.3/-0.3) if a team is winning/losing during the period a player is on the pitch.
  • Goalkeepers get 0.5 points for every save made, unlike the one point awarded in FPL for increments of three stops.
  • Committing a foul that leads to a free-kick goal or converted penalty is penalised by minus two points.
  • Midfielders and forwards get an extra point for completing the full match.
  • Each shot on target is rewarded (+0.4 for forwards/midfielders, +0.6 for defenders, +1.0 for goalkeepers).

    RMWCT

    Sanchez Steele

    TAA Shaw ayling Semedo Williams

    Salah Gray raphinha Torres Sissoko

    Ronaldo Lukaku Street

    0.4 ITB
Giving ayling couple of weeks to get points, otherwise shifting him for James & selling Torres to fund it

    Thoughts?

    Current team

    Sanchez/Steele

    TAA/Shaw/Coufal/Ayling/Tsimikas/

    Salah/Gray/Benrahma/Greenwood/Brownhill

    DCL/Antonio/Ronaldo

    0.3 ITB 1 FT

Personally feels that WC sets me up ok for the medium to long term, tapping into wolves, leeds, whilst keeping consistent performers like shaw/TAA/Salah

Was going to say that Ayling and Torres are the focal point. Id prefer plan B you have there. Maybe a wolves defender in for Ayling as I cant see that Leeds team shutting too many out. Though good mid priced mids are hard to find. Maybe Jota for Torres if Pool sustain their form and Torres gets rotated.

yeah, just giving leeds a chance for easy fixtures, issue with jota is firmino is back soon, but yeah it is a tossup between the two. also, torres might still get some minutes due to pep roulette, but jota defo won't start once firmino is back

I'd rather get White than Ayling tbh.. not impressed with Leeds defence at all, would just get their attacking players

Anyone fancy Raya ahead of Sanchez on a WC?

I feel Raya has a lot of saves in him and even though he has a tough fixture run, I wouldnt be surprised if he gets a steady return of 3's and 4's. He might even get the odd penalty save against those top sides. Brentford are solidly set up too and may close out some of the weaker sides.

Havent the cash to get to Schmeichel.

I have been considering it to be fair.
But just think if you don’t have a Brighton DFer like Duffy/Velt etc… then Sanchez is a nice way into what is a solid DF

They have a tough run but Raya seems to be straight out of the Emi Martinez mould when it comes to high save output per game.

He could be, I'd be a bit worried that against better teams that aren't profligate like Arsenal and Brighton though that Brentford will get hit a bit harder

If moving from Sanchez it's Ramsdale, Guaita or Sa imo

Sa interests me but dont have the cash. I dont fancy the team in front of Ramsdale. Guaita has had great runs in the past. Need a game or two more before i would commit to them to see if they have regained their former solidity.

Raph is excellent value and has great fixtures coming up now.

Then you’ll have and extra 1+ mil to play with as well.

Jota & Greenwood both great options too though if you not bothered about the extra cash

Thanks. Yes extra cash would be helpful in upgrading elsewhere.

Defo doing CR7 > Lukaku in GW 7 or 8, yes.

I need the 0.1 to have R. James over Rudi - hence Omo over Williams

Very similar to mine but I went the Lukaku route up front with a slightly weaker midfield.

        Sánchez
        James TAA Marçal
        Doucouré Salah Greenwood Raphinha Gallagher
        Lukaku Ronaldo

        Steele Duffy Omo Davis

Good as it gets, as long as Watford don't turn into Bayern at some point.

I would personally go City defender & 4-3-3 over Torres atm but that is probably reactionary to the clean sheets of the weekend

I thought having all 3 would be a mistake, but you're showing how it can be done. For me, having committed to CR7/Luk/TAA and no Salah, I can't get Salah in now until one of the front 2 get injured. Until then I will wince every time Salah takes to the pitch. It's not a comfortable place to be.

If I remember correctly, you picked Jota as a cover for Salah's points?

            You were terribly unlucky in fairness, Jota could/should have come away with a nice haul if it wasn't for Mane's finishing but I think it was Lateriser that wrote preseason, despite the saving;

            Mane won't cover Salah
            Sancho won't cover Fernandes
            (you get the jist)

Your mid price midfielders are better than mine and are more likely to fire, with my picks it's more based on hope (Sarr/Traore).

I think I’m going Meslier and then De gea (gw14/15)

I wouldn't say guaranteed, he was rotated with Kepa a little last season (Kepa had 6 starts). But definitely thinking of it, although with the likes of Rudiger being 5.5 I think it's best to maybe double up on defenders

I'm looking at something like that. I'm planning on upgrading Sanchez GW9. Was intending on Meslier, but could be Sa or even Ramsdale if they perform well. Even if Mendy finishes the season with the most points for a keeper, I think he won't be top in terms of value, or points-per-million.

Jota > Mané> Firmino only reason klopp plays any of the other is because of history

salah & mane play better with firmino, so klopp takes that into account too

true, but the difference is pep seems to like playing him at CF, mahrez, sterling aren't getting many minutes, will see who he starts midweek. main difference is, torres will get minutes anyways because pep roulette, but you know jota won't start once firmino is back

I was skeptical but the mid range strikers are falling like flies (DCL Antonio Bamford doubts). TAA Salah CR7 Lukaku looks like the way to go & the fact he has James, Shaw, Semedo Raphinha in there too brings it mighty close to perfection.

      Bachmann
      TAA Shaw Ayling
      Salah Bruno Jota Raphinha Benrahma
      Antonio* Toney

      Foster; Veltman, Livramento, Scarlett

      2ft and 2.5itb.

Toney and Bruno -> Ronaldo and max 8.4 mid (who?) sound good? Could also do Antonio -> Bamford for additional -4 or just start Veltman?

      Ramsdale
      TAA • Shaw • White
      Salah • Pogba • Raphinha • Gray • Gallagher
      Ronaldo • Lukaku

      4.0 • Livramento • Williams • 4.5

Thoughts on this WC? Pogba can be Jota/Jimenez or can keep Antonio bought for 7.5

I'd much rather have a good 5.0 defender than Gallagher so I'd downgrade him to a 4.5 and upgrade Williams.

Why, out of curiosity? Gallagher seems really attacking, has been scoring good, seems nailed on. Could even have had much more (such as the hitting the crossbar in GW2).

Chelsea defence over Shaw and I wouldn't be confident on Ramsdale with no back up.

The other one to ask yourself is whether come GW7 you'll want 5.5 mids over 5.5 defence. That looks to me to be a double transfer waiting to happen.

      Guaita / 4.0

      TAA / Shaw / Marcal / Livramento / Williams

      Lukaku / Ronaldo (4.5)

Why has Ronaldo not risen in price? The whole point of the game is surely that if you jump on a player early then you get the benefit of the better price. The playing field is not level and it only compounds the problem of template teams.

      1. Holmes
        • 10 Years
        2 years, 6 months ago

The whole point of the game is to earn points. TV is secondary.

You got his point, your rank has risen. That was the whole point.

But the point is, that there is an absence of consistency and all those early wildcarders have now been disadvantaged.

Surely you didnt play WC to earn/save 0.1 on Ronaldo or Lukaku?

Price changes have always been a mystery and a month lock in period for new comers could be the new rule. Basically we shouldnt bother with price changes and just concentrate on doing things which will work for our team.

Looks like I'm committed to an 8 point hit but is it worth it?

Bruno, Antonio > Ronaldo, Dallas (done at -4)
      DCL > Lukaku (-4)

Seems worth it to me long term and not worth a Wildcard. Means I'll have 3 premiums (own Salah) plus TAA

Now to hope they come through the CL games ...

Honestly think gray will have his purple patch and then dead end

Traore/Sarr haven’t even kicked off yet despite promise

Gallagher needs fixtures and may be a good option to replace gray

Not really feeling the weak midfield - seems like a trap!

Soon as Ron and Rom don’t return so heavily reliant on returns elsewhere which could be slim pickings

This gameweek has created the perfect storm!

Whats the chances of ESR starting this weekend? He looked lively when he came on against NOR.
