Scoutcast Episode 386 – Forward thinking needed for Gameweek 5

Joe, Seb and Andy help Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers prepare for Gameweek 5.

Forward options dominate the agenda on this week’s Scoutcast as our trio face a wave of injuries and tough decisions in attacking roles.

Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) and Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku (£11.6m) are elite finishers, who look destined to replicate their Gameweek 4 hauls across the campaign.

But their hefty price tags mean that they are not easy to squeeze in to most FPL managers’ budgets. Who is the preferable option? Or is picking both possible?

The crew consider the options in maximising the points potential of this pricy attacking pair, while ensuring the rest of their squads can continue delivering.

There are further challenges in attack for FPL managers. West Ham’s Michail Antonio (£7.9m) is suspended, while another well owned mid-price pick, Everton talisman Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m), is injured for a few weeks. Alternative budget-friendly options are considered, with Leeds striker Patrick Bamford (£7.9m) topping their shopping list.

A kind run for Marcelo Bielsa’s side is prompting interest in Bamford and his teammates. Leeds fan Seb is on hand with his thoughts on how they may line up and their prospects for strong returns.

Fresh from their Wildcards, Joe and Andy look back on their green arrow in Gameweek 4 and how their new recruits may be able to weather the challenges ahead, especially in attack. But can Seb recover from his red arrow, or will he be tempted to deploy his Wildcard?

There’s teams, differentials and captaincy decisions to reveal and also a chance to catch up on the Scoutcast’s management of a veteran Fantasy manager’s team, who has had to dip out of this campaign for mental health reasons. With a top 100 finish last season, the pressure is truly on to maintain his strong record.

Somehow I still have Harvey Barnes.. Would you keep him and have 2ft next week or sell for Gray/Doucoure?

If you've held until this point you keep unless there are signals that he is not in the XI.

that may require a 3-5-2, which they haven't adopted yet.

Maybe keep at this point because I don't really like those alternatives. He hit the bar v City and will eventually come good with their decent fixtures.

I'm tempted, but he's really carrying Newcastle in attack which either means all the points or none! I'm not overly sold on Bamford or Jiminez yet, so Saint Maximan could be a good shout to get a Jota or Pepe priced MF in.

      1. DIMITRIS
        • 5 Years

I'm looking at an alternative for Antonio. Getting ASM leaves me with 1.6 ITB which could be really useful elsewhere.
But I'd also want to have Bamford or Jimenez.
Plenty of options to consider. I'm however leaning towards ASM or Jimenez at the moment.

He's a slightly better Traore in terms of his output imo. Could've still been a decent option if he was still a mid, but as a forward, not for me.

      1. DIMITRIS
        • 5 Years

Probably Jimenez is the better pick. He has to start scoring, he's on penalties and has a nice run of fixtures. On top of that he's owned only by 4.2% !

Yeah, have my eyes on Jimenez as my Toney replacement in GW6. If he convinces me in GW5, I'm sold.

Anyone think Mendy is the keeper to have this year? Chelsea could end up keeping 20+ clean sheets and he gets save points as well with occasional bonus. I don't like any of the cheap keepers this year that much.

Very tempted too, but 6 is a lot for a keeper. Saying that Buachman is currently like having 10 men!

Yeah, Bachmann has been a let down so far. But I guess we knew the risks when going for a Watford keeper. Will be chopping him off on my WC unless Watford's defense improves.

I think 6m is too much when the likes of Rudiger and James can be bought for less (the latter with decent assist/bp potential to boot).

Can't ever understand why you'd pay 6mill for a keeper to be honest. Rudiger is just as nailed and 0.5 cheaper. James is 0.4cheaper and has so much more potential with assists but slightly less nailed. Think Mendy is a mistake when theres decent keepers for a million cheaper ... sa, de gea from gameweek14, schmeichel ect.

DCL and Antonio is unlucky on the WC. I had both as well and helped make my mind up to WC this week. Initially wasn't keen on loading up on the big hitters initially but with a lack of midfield options I'm happy to go down the 3 sub 6.5m route and see how it goes the next few. At least the likes of Raph/Traore/Sarr/Gray have the short term fixtures and Salah, Ron and Rom will always get points

yeah, the week I buy DCL he gets injured. Wondering if jumping ship on Antonio this week could be a masterstroke to get a jump on the masses.

I don't why but I disagree with most of the points you're making. If you watched the game and saw the heatmaps, stats Semedo is well worth extra over Marcal.

Looks good- I am looking at something very similar and got to this team for now- felt so many good options around 7.5 price point in midfield so took money out of defence- not wildly keen on White but limited options at 4.5 and below

      Sanchez
      TAA Semedo Rudiger White
      Salah Jota Raphinha Gray

That's a great team and I wish I could do the same but downgrading a chelsea defender to White still doesn't give me enough to get Jota. Your team value must be decent! I would love Jota in there but just can't stretch without sacrificing one of the big hitters

    TAA James Semedo Marcal
    Salah Jota Raphinha Gray
    Ronaldo Bamford

    (4.0 Antonio* Livramento Sissoko)

Plan is to sell Wolves def, Jota & Ronaldo for Chelsea/City def, Chelsea/City mid & Lukaku by GW8.

I kind of agree with that but I want Ronaldo over Lukaku right now and I'm not sure which Chelsea/City mid and Chelsea/City def I'd opt for.

Rudiger, Christensen, Cancelo, Dias, Laporte, Mount, Havertz, Grealish & Torres all under consideration for those 2 spots.

On a WC i'd get Ron and Rom but i think they will score similar so in your sit just get Rom, those defenders and mids look like a minefield other than Rudiger Dias who have very little attacking threat

Can't you hold on until GW8?

I don't see that WC being worthwhile considering your team.

DCL > Bamford and play 4-4-2.

Waiting until GW8 to get rid of MUN for Chelsea seems really clean and it's during IB as well.

I have a really similar team and I'm holding on.

I still like Shaw until 8. Ayling is fine as a backup. Greenwood still starting and Benrahma after MUN has lee BRE. I don't think they are bad picks by any stretch.

If I WC'd now I'd go 4-4-2 with James, Lukaku and Ronaldo.

Ayling doesn't look great at all mate.
Shaw can easily be outscored by Wolves/Chelsea def over the next 6 games.
Greenwood is playing too wide now and definitely not a better option than Jota for next 2.
White is decent for bench not someone I'm happy starting every week when there are much better options available.
Benny got subbed on 63rd min and has 1 shot in the last 2 matches.

Leeds defence looks bad but they have great fixtures and Ayling has been so attacking, should have scored again at the weekend, do you watch the games/highlights?
Shaw's next four look OK to me but yeah Wolves/Chelsea defenders are his equal for sure.
I didnt mean Greenwood was a better option than Jota, Jota definitely the better option, should have hauled and has the best two fixtures.
I think White will be good value all season but yes i wouldnt keep on a WC.
Again not sure if you watched the game but Benny could of had a few assists, not just about shots with players like him.

If Llorente is out, Ayling may need to play centre back.

Ah thanks for the Benrahma performance. Nice team by the way Karan14. Have the same dilemma but I still am trying to hold for GW7 or 8.

But if Chelsea Man city is 0-0 you are golden. But trouble with chelsea and man city is midfield rotation with champions league

Less rotation in defence IMO. Except mount but got dropped for a rest

I would definitely not go for Antonio on WC.
The fixtures turn soon and Europa comes in.

Also don't like James for the 2 tough fixtures.

I'd hold the WC and play it in 7.
Otherwise would get rid of these 2 for Cancelo and Jiminez

Yeah I'm definitely considering Jimenez over Antonio on wildcard but it's a tough one. Antonio's stats are Salah/Ronaldo-esque.

Cancelo has Chelsea & Pool away after this week same story as James who I definitely want long term. Still not sure if Cancelo is the City def to get or Dias/Stones could be more nailed options as well.

That team will look really bad for next week with Mendy, Cancelo, Dias, Lukaku all playing each other.

Double City defense really unappealing with rotation and che liv in their next 3.

On a WC - solid enough?

    Sanchez
    Marcal TAA Cancelo
    Greenwod Raphnia Salah Gray
    Bamford Jiminez Ronaldo

Bench: Steele Duffy Sissoko Livremento (1m ITB)

in 2 gws the plan is

    Ronaldo > Lukaku

I like it, this was similar to my original WC but then I realised I would struggle to take out Ronaldo in GW7 when he has Everton at home so I've gone for the 3 bit hitters. Not sure Jiminez has done enough although he does have the fixtures.

One thing that so many so called experts/podcasters ignore is price rises when they talk about getting certain players in for future weeks. have just listened to someone (wont name them !) say wait for GW6 to get Ronaldo in because he is not best GW5 captain option. I get the latter comment (Captain choice maybe), but if you wait till GW6, you may well be priced out of it. Its a pretty basic point for an "expert" to ignore. Sometimes you need to think longer term than the next GW.
