The best Adam Webster replacements in Sky Fantasy

Fantasy Football Scout are delighted to be partnering with Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season – bringing you even more content on the popular, free-to-enter game.

Our resident experts Luke Williams and Niall Murphy will be recording videos every week throughout the season and will each be writing monthly articles, so you will get the very best insight and advice on these pages.

This week, Luke tackles the Aaron Webster injury issue suffered by many a Sky manager post-Overhaul. Even if you do not own Webster, the replacements should appeal as budget options in the coming weeks.

New to Sky Sports Fantasy Football? Read FFScout’s Official Sky Beginner’s Guide to get you started.

Webster, who currently sits in 46% of the top 1k managers’ teams, picked up a hamstring injury against Brentford at the weekend.

At the time of writing this piece, there have been no updates on his likely length of absence – so initially it seems wise to wait on further news.

If Webster was in line to return for his single matchday on September 27 against Crystal Palace then holding him would be my preference, simply because I expect him to be the best player at his price or below over the season, and swapping out low-impact assets isn’t usually an efficient use of transfers.

However, if we assume the worst and it’s a month or more out, then moving on seems wise.

My top targets are listed below…

Connor Gallagher (7.3m)

If you can find the spare 0.3m and have a midfield position free or even if you have other issues in your team, then Gallagher currently looks a top target.

The midfield position is often underwhelming in Sky and Gallagher looks the perfect player to slot into an area you don’t really want to spend too much money in. His fixtures don’t look overly appealing but as a long-term hold it shouldn’t deter you, and he also has the benefit of covering the aforementioned September 27 fixture that most of us had Webster earmarked for.

His expected goal involvement (xGI) is 3.22 over the last three games, better than any other Premier League player. More than that, though, he offers bonus points with high tackle numbers and shots on target – a rare asset to have for a player so cheap.

Shane Duffy (6.6m)

Budget FPL players Duffy and Bissouma 2

My second choice to replace Webster would be Shane Duffy. Whilst this move carries an element of risk due to Duffy’s starts not being cemented, the volume of injury issues in Brighton’s squad coupled with the Ireland international’s performances suggest he could become either a permanent fixture or at least carry us for many weeks to come.

He offers similar passing levels to Webster (currently 56.3 per 90 minutes played) but with added goal threat for a cheaper price.

Marcal (6.4m)

I have perhaps been guilty of overlooking Marcal until now, but his recent haul certainly got my attention. Bruno Lage has both his full-backs playing extremely high up the pitch and therefore more attacking returns look likely in the coming weeks.

This, coupled with an excellent fixture run and a tendency to pick up tackle bonus (three times in four weeks so far), means that he looks like a very shrewd pick. In fact, he has won 14 tackles so far, which is behind only Cesar Azpilicueta.

My only slight worry would be his injury record and that’s why he finds himself third on my list.

Liam Cooper (6.9m)

Leeds have had a pretty torrid start, and conceding 11 goals in four games doesn’t scream ‘invest’.

However, the Whites now embark on a very favourable fixture run and Cooper could serve as a stop-gap with a move back to Webster when he returns. He also offers captaincy coverage this Friday if you require it.

Cooper’s main appeal is high passing numbers. He currently sits at 56.8 passes per 90 minutes despite the tough games and I suspect he will be hitting the 60/70 benchmark for bonus points as the fixtures ease.

Nuno will play very defensive but not sure that will stop Lukaku from hauling with Spurs injury problems.

Yes, we will react after last week, I’m not saying we will win but we it won’t be high scoring and nuno has a phenomenal record managing against the big teams, also hearing son should be back + romero and lo celco. It’s not an easy game for Chelsea

Chelsea are going to batter them. Spurs have looked shocking in their last three. He's apparently going to throw the Argentinian players who've been training away straight into the team after one training session.

    Thoughts on this WC draft...

    Sanchez (Steele)

    R.James - Semedo - TAA - White (Livra)

Salah - Jota - Grey - Townsend (Gallagher)

    Kaku - CR7 - 4.5

Double up Merseyside midfield for 2 GW, with the plan to move Grey/Andros after Norwich.

Would you go with Ronaldo on WC and then switch him to Lukaku in GW7?

Or Go with Lukaku instead and save a transfer down the line?

Ronaldo is a good captaincy option in GW6. But if you have Lukaku it should be fine i guess?

Yes but not worth it for his price when you're not going to captain him. The mid priced forwards will be better value for money.

Honestly, you can get a perfectly good team with Lukaku, Salah, CR7, TAA, Cancelo, James, Jota, which then gives you the ability to downgrade if you need to.

I wouldn't buy into the hype of the two premium strategy which most people push here, look at my team as a basis and then improve on my mistakes.

I dont think I picked well in selecting Traore, Sarr or Christensen. Could even say Bachmann wasn't the best pick either.

      2. Khark
        • 8 Years

It's not about the two premium strategy per se. It's more about the points per million, price points and fixtures - in my opinion.

Take TAA Salah Ronaldo Lukaku and Gray for the next 5 gameweeks. Do they outscore for example TAA Salah Ronaldo Bamford and Jota ?

I don't think so personally. Yes we all want to own all the star players, but thats not entirely what fantasy is about. If you honestly think having all the big hitters in your team gets you more points long term than having more of the medium priced options then absolutely go for it. This is what makes fantasy so exciting, the differencing of opinions.

Neither the 2 or 3 premium strategy is the "best way" it's just the best way in our own opinions

Yeah there is logic in your argument I just feel like the three premiums are almost sure to get something in most games whilst the mid players will get something in less games.

Take Torres/Raphinha/Buendia for example. Jota has been unlucky, but he's not Salah, Greenwood is the outlier.

But I agree, different perceptions and strategies make this game what it is.

most would say its too much money if you're not planning on captaining ronaldo much from GW7. Salah can cover the next 2 weeks captain choices.
currently assessing this and looking at who else I'd get with the extra funds, say up until GW 19/20

What you say is true but you'll have people spreading captaincy across the three, I figure there is value in halving that advantage - but that's my mentality.

Looking at next 10 gw, i may consider someone outside of Lukaku or Salah 2-3 times. That being Ronaldo.

Not to say United fixtures are rubbish but that run includes Liv City Che.

Does someone like Pogba offer some coverage for United where that extra ~5m can be re-distributed. Plus allows for a stronger backline that hopefully won’t need as many transfers down the line. Don’t have the answer yet haha

May come down to the likes of:
          Ronaldo + 5m striker + Gray
          Bamford + Antonio + Pogba

I have tried big at the back. Problem is goals are more exciting and you’ll find yourself second guessing your decision all the time.

Inspired by the 3 premium v 2 premium discussion, I made 2 wildcard teams (as I'm on WC currently)

    Option 1 - 2 prems
    Sanchez
    TAA James Cancelo (Duffy) (Livramento)
    Salah Jota Gray Raphinha (Sissoko)
    Bamford Antonio Ronaldo

    Option 2 - 3 prems
    Sanchez
    TAA James Rudiger Marcal (Livramento)
    Salah Jota Gray Raphinha (Mendy)
    Lukaku Ronaldo (Perica)

Largely, the key question is does Lukaku + Marcal outscore Bamford + Antonio. Any thoughts on which way would you lean on this ideological question ?

Its not that simple as you will captain Lukaku a lot where as i doubt you will captain Bam or Ant very often with Salah Ronaldo in your team!? Plus you don't have to poop yourself every week for not owning Lukaku.

      For me its 3 premiums.

Yes, slightly fewer rotation options (2) for the 3 CBs. Whereas the wingbacks have direct replacement options.

Had Antonio at 7.5. Selling price is now 7.7. If he goes down from 7.9 to 7.8 will it affect the selling price aswell ? Cheers.

Don't make decisions on the basis of losing 0.1m though mate. If you want rid because you want another player for the foreseeable go for it. Don't ditch Antonio to then want him back immediately, you'll be paying more and wasting free transfers.

Not really fancying a United double up(already have Ronaldo) with the upcoming fixtures, though Greenwood does look tempting still.
What about Torres if he doesn't feature much in the CL tonight?

If he doesnt feature, yes. But he will face Chelsea and Liverpool after that, so not much upside with him.

I'd stick with Dennis, he's started every game and has a couple of nice fixtures. There's a lot of guesswork involved with the alternatives at that price.

Yead Dennis for now, at least 2 GW's then an easy swap to Broja if he gets onto the score sheets.

Broja would definitely be interesting in a few weeks if he gets a start

Will be interesting to see if Broja starts matches from now on for Soton. Hasenhuttl has had very good things to say about him after his 2 sub apps.

Could be the pertfect enabler to have with the Ronaldo and Lukaku combo when going 3 up top, that is if Broja becomes a regular and hits the ground running.

    One to watch closely IMO.

I think he'll go very close, he gets a chance to start inevitably.
All three in the same side, is almost doable with Armstrong as one of the 10s but unlikely.

    A. Benrahmah to Raph -4

Decent article by Luke nothing earth shattering solid advice. If I was to rate in fpl terms I would say ‘Coady-esque’. Surprised he did not get Marcal though cheapest starting Wolves defender in overall. I too got Webster annoyed at myself for not getting Duffy the extra cash made me pick Webster over him. So now I have decisions to make.
