UCL Fantasy: Wednesday preview and Tuesday review

UEFA Champions League Fantasy got underway on Tuesday but managers still have the opportunity to make changes to their teams, be it via the captaincy or by bringing in a substitute or two.

MAKE CHANGES TO YOUR UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FANTASY TEAM HERE

There are eight more games this evening, so it’s time to take a look at what we learned from last night’s fixtures – including shock results for Sevilla and Manchester United – and what to expect from tonight’s matches.

What we learned from last night’s fixtures

UCL Fantasy: Wednesday preview and Tuesday review 1
Barcelona aren’t a top side

They were swept aside by Bayern, lacking in quality all over the pitch and incredibly poor defensively. A trip to the Camp Nou is just not a threatening prospect for good teams anymore.

Robert Lewandowski is an unstoppable goalscoring force

His brace takes him to eight goals in five games this season for Bayern and his UCL games only get easier from here.

There’s never a quiet game when Atalanta are involved

The Bergamo side were involved in a great battle with Unai Emery’s Villarreal. They score lots of goals but are still relatively unsteady at the back. Backing their attack is never a bad option, but there is less confidence in their centre-halves.

Zenit St Petersburg are a solid outfit

They came very close to a draw with a Chelsea side they harried and pressurised all night. Yaroslav Rakitskyi and Wilmar Barrios were great for balls recovered and Rakitskyi kept Romelu Lukaku quiet for everything but the goal. Their players are good options for their upcoming tie against Malmo.

Sevilla are inconsistent… and Red Bull Salzburg need to practise their penalties

Like at points last season, Sevilla promised a lot and delivered very little. Salzburg are an exciting attacking side and Karim Adeyemi was involved in almost everything they did going forward.

Manchester United aren’t the finished article

United’s defence still needs a lot of work and the Red Devils looked static going forward with Cristiano Ronaldo as a focal point. Young Boys didn’t deserve the win but United will now have to go all out for the rest of the competition to secure qualification.

What to expect from tonight’s games

UCL Fantasy: Wednesday preview and Tuesday review
Dortmund might not have as easy a game as expected

Besiktas will sit deep and aim to frustrate Dortmund, which is exactly what Freiburg did in the Black and Yellows’ only loss so far this season. The three Bundesliga games they’ve won (vs Eintracht Frankfurt, Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen) were all against attacking sides who gave them space to go forward and presented Erling Haaland with opportunities to counter and run at them. Haaland is still a great option this evening, but if you want to bet against him, you wouldn’t be completely irrational.

Paris St-Germain should score a lot of goals

This is set to be “MNM”‘s first appearance together. Club Brugge have been defensively poor of late, conceding six against Gent just two weeks ago. PSG have the shortest odds of scoring four goals or more this evening and one of their players looks likely to be the best captaincy option.

Whoever starts for Manchester City will be a great option

Red Bull Leipzig have been poor recently, can’t get a rhythm together under Jesse Marsch and lost 4-1 to Bayern at the weekend. However, predicting who will start for City is virtually impossible.

Sporting Lisbon vs Ajax looks too close to call

Both are solid sides in strong domestic form.

Shakhtar Donetsk should triumph

This is unlikely to be a rout for Shakhtar, however. Sheriff Tiraspol definitely have an upset in them, as they showed in qualification.

Liverpool v AC Milan could be tight

These are two defensively strong sides in good form. Liverpool should have too much quality for the Italians but it’s unlikely to be a high-scoring game.

Read Madrid should prosper v Inter Milan

Real won this tie home and away in last season’s group stages and Inter are a weaker side now without Romelu Lukaku or Antonio Conte, whereas Real are thriving under Carlo Ancelotti, especially going forward. Watch out for Karim Benzema, who’s had nine goal contributions in four games in La Liga this season.

Yes. He's more attacking. He missed two 1v1s in the last game. Another day he gets 15 points from that game.

    Coufal > Semedo -4 worth?

I'm starting Sissoko this week and next week I'll have to play one of Ayling (WHU), Coufal (lee) and Livra (WOL). Semedo would improve the team for the next 3 weeks since he has BRE sou NEW.

    I'm leaning towards doing it...

      I'd go for that.
I feel like your Coufal is the equivalent of my Digne. They get points but they are so erratic with how they get them and in which games.

And I think Semedo (non-owner) has to be the most "due" player out there, there is a 15/18 pter brewing, I just sense it.

I am in the exact same position as you Camzy.

Im probably leaning towards doing it too but going to hold off until the EL game is done tomorrow.

I think Semedo makes up the -4 over the next 3. I also intend to WC in GW8.

Yeah I guess I'm breaking the don't take a hit for a defender rule. But it clearly improves me for 3 weeks. Semedo's stats and eye test suggest a big haul is coming.

I can. But it's this week that has the biggest value since I'm currently forced to field Sissoko or Coufal.

I think Sissoko will be a fine option, likely to get you 3pts, maybe more since he seems to be getting forward and had an effort on goal the other day. I get it though, I mean I'm trying to cut down on hits in general myself and was tempted to take one to get rid of Llorente as it'd have long-term benefits as well as short-term, but I can see it going wrong and am trying to hold patience and will just hope Allan can pick up a 3 pointer. If you think it will turn out well this week and make up the difference then go for it.

102.0 m on Fanteam with a wildcard, feel like a kid in a sweetshop- already at the point of getting a backup gk just because.

For those playing, they added some new 4.0 strikers if that is your thing and Salah went up in price but Marcal didn't so there is definitely someone in charge as opposed to blind algorithm changes.

That's nice team value. I feel like it's almost cheating to WC just for price changes and then change to your actual team.

I did it for one of my teams. Got Mendy, Gallagher, Doucoure, Gray, Cancelo rises even though I don't plan on having any of them with absolutely not drawbacks.

Now I can WC for real with more team value.

Thanks, precisely, just went for risers to get that like you did. It's a strategy I think you need when you recoup everything in Fanteam. It's actually got me thinking whether to just burn the second wc as soon as it becomes available for more value again (and no doubt the team will be falling apart at the seams around then).

Is the choice between Gray and Townsend cut and dried? Both appear to be over-performing and likely to regress.

Simply wondering whether the Townsend assists may be the more sustainable returns. The stats I'm looking at appear to show Townsend is the more involved in actual goal creation.

Not an issue for me this week simply interested to hear from Everton watchers. Only caught highlights myself.

Let's not forget, Gray did not have a chance to spread his wings and fly under Rodgers.

Unlikely he will score almost every game but could prove to be a sharp shooter. Always hits the bullseye.

        True

Over against that Townsend was not exactly promoted by Roy. Had him on my preseason bus team and so perhaps biased towards him. Might yet be in a position where that 0.3 matters if I get one of them in as my 8th attacker in place of Gilmour - and 5.4 feels more benchable than 5.7 🙂

Gray gets into really advanced positions which might change when DCL is back.

Townsend was electric under Rafa before (albeit briefly), enough to trick Palace into signing him as you know, so I'd rather him.

I look at that price and think it's too low really.

He's a bit like McArthur in this respect - a change in position and reduced minutes last season disguise his record. He was a decent value 6.0 even at Palace. Under Rafa who obvs rates him I can see him ticking over really nicely. Really just know much less about Gray.

    Mahrez + Toney —> Gray + Bamford

    Worth it for a -4?

Would you replace Mount's 4 points with Edson Alvarez?

Can I get a quick Y/N on the below players. I'm on WC and keep looking at it, and changing it and looking at it again.

    1. Ramsdale
    2. Torres
    3. Gray
    4. Tierney

I know it depends hugely on who else is in the squad. But just by player alone, would you take them forward in a wildcard team?

      I like 1, 3 and 4.

Only Gray out of that lot for me

I don't like double arsenal defence. Tierney and Torres I like. Grays points will regress so no for me. Rather put that money into a Rudiger/Dias type

Be wary of Ramsdale without back up - Arteta has history here so that's a no from me - have also come across tweets suggesting Leno has been told it's a short term thing.

2/3/4 all look very plausible choices and would be on my shortlist.

    Using WC:

    Sanchez Steele
    TAA Semedo Livramento Duffy Williams
    Salah Benrahma Raphina Doucoure McArthur
    Bamford Lukaku Ronaldo

3 budget defenders not ideal but they do rotate fairly well and hard to find the extra 0.3 needed for White

    Sissoko instead of McArthur?
Smith Rowe instead of Doucoure? (no money ITB so can't upgrade to Gray)

    Any other obvious weaknesses?

Apparently ESR didn't train earlier today.

Doucoure over Gray isn't a bad shout anyway - similar points hauls and whether Gray can continue his current form is up for debate (Doucoure a bit more proven).

I was also deliberating between McArthur and Sissoko and its Watford fixtures that pushed me towards Sissoko (with some influence from others on here I would add lol)

As an after thought, Andros Townsend may be worth a look (5.4 currently)!

Looking at Arsenal and Wolves defenders combo's. Which is better?

    a) Semedo/White
    b) Tierney/Marcal

Currently on A (although a Semedo/Marcal double up is tempting)
