UCL Fantasy: Wednesday preview and Tuesday review

UEFA Champions League Fantasy got underway on Tuesday but managers still have the opportunity to make changes to their teams, be it via the captaincy or by bringing in a substitute or two.

There are eight more games this evening, so it’s time to take a look at what we learned from last night’s fixtures – including shock results for Sevilla and Manchester United – and what to expect from tonight’s matches.

What we learned from last night’s fixtures

UCL Fantasy: Wednesday preview and Tuesday review 1
Barcelona aren’t a top side

They were swept aside by Bayern, lacking in quality all over the pitch and incredibly poor defensively. A trip to the Camp Nou is just not a threatening prospect for good teams anymore.

Robert Lewandowski is an unstoppable goalscoring force

His brace takes him to eight goals in five games this season for Bayern and his UCL games only get easier from here.

There’s never a quiet game when Atalanta are involved

The Bergamo side were involved in a great battle with Unai Emery’s Villarreal. They score lots of goals but are still relatively unsteady at the back. Backing their attack is never a bad option, but there is less confidence in their centre-halves.

Zenit St Petersburg are a solid outfit

They came very close to a draw with a Chelsea side they harried and pressurised all night. Yaroslav Rakitskyi and Wilmar Barrios were great for balls recovered and Rakitskyi kept Romelu Lukaku quiet for everything but the goal. Their players are good options for their upcoming tie against Malmo.

Sevilla are inconsistent… and Red Bull Salzburg need to practise their penalties

Like at points last season, Sevilla promised a lot and delivered very little. Salzburg are an exciting attacking side and Karim Adeyemi was involved in almost everything they did going forward.

Manchester United aren’t the finished article

United’s defence still needs a lot of work and the Red Devils looked static going forward with Cristiano Ronaldo as a focal point. Young Boys didn’t deserve the win but United will now have to go all out for the rest of the competition to secure qualification.

What to expect from tonight’s games

UCL Fantasy: Wednesday preview and Tuesday review
Dortmund might not have as easy a game as expected

Besiktas will sit deep and aim to frustrate Dortmund, which is exactly what Freiburg did in the Black and Yellows’ only loss so far this season. The three Bundesliga games they’ve won (vs Eintracht Frankfurt, Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen) were all against attacking sides who gave them space to go forward and presented Erling Haaland with opportunities to counter and run at them. Haaland is still a great option this evening, but if you want to bet against him, you wouldn’t be completely irrational.

Paris St-Germain should score a lot of goals

This is set to be “MNM”‘s first appearance together. Club Brugge have been defensively poor of late, conceding six against Gent just two weeks ago. PSG have the shortest odds of scoring four goals or more this evening and one of their players looks likely to be the best captaincy option.

Whoever starts for Manchester City will be a great option

Red Bull Leipzig have been poor recently, can’t get a rhythm together under Jesse Marsch and lost 4-1 to Bayern at the weekend. However, predicting who will start for City is virtually impossible.

Sporting Lisbon vs Ajax looks too close to call

Both are solid sides in strong domestic form.

Shakhtar Donetsk should triumph

This is unlikely to be a rout for Shakhtar, however. Sheriff Tiraspol definitely have an upset in them, as they showed in qualification.

Liverpool v AC Milan could be tight

These are two defensively strong sides in good form. Liverpool should have too much quality for the Italians but it’s unlikely to be a high-scoring game.

Read Madrid should prosper v Inter Milan

Real won this tie home and away in last season’s group stages and Inter are a weaker side now without Romelu Lukaku or Antonio Conte, whereas Real are thriving under Carlo Ancelotti, especially going forward. Watch out for Karim Benzema, who’s had nine goal contributions in four games in La Liga this season.

Repost. Posted on an old thread.

Already took a -4 to get rid of Antonio and Dier. Is it worth doing another -4 for
    DCL------>Vardy/Bamford?
Otherwise I will need to play Duffy VS leicester and I think Duffy will be a 2 pointer, whereas Vardy will score. So, maybe that -4 might pay off?

All part of the gamble. Last week I benched Ings and Barnes for Livra and Duffy because I was already on a hit. They both cleaned! Still need to get rid but at least I have a free transfer and more data now.

It's actually quite a nice team. Would you consider Ramsdale instead of Sanchez and Cancelo instead of Dias?

      You'll then have another fullback.

Those defender choices are niggling me too. Dias is obviously decent, but after Southampton its not easy for them - I've gone with an Arsenal defender either Tomy or Tierney, could me an upgrade on Pukki, but then again he could do well as a differential.

Problem is where do you take Pukki if he fails? Hwang maybe

The only things I would consider changing are:

      1. Pogba to Raphinha or Jota

      2. Either downgrade Gray/Gallagher and upgrade Pukki or downgrade Pukki and upgrade Gray/Gallagher.

Pogba has 7 assists off an xA of 1.31. He's had some really fortunate assists. I'm not convinced he will sustain the output. Raphinha is onto a decent run of fixtures now and that 1M can be useful elsewhere.

Totally agree he has definitely over performed - but that would leave me with no Man Utd though. I don't want Greenwood as I feel his minutes will reduce. This is probably the hardest decision for me - your points make complete sense - thank you

Reply fail sorry. I really like it.

I think pukki has Sargent hanging over him. Most Norwich fans want this anyway.

Pogba and Raphinha is a gut call like them both.

I feel or my gut tells me Gallagher is better long term than Gray.

You could upgrade Gray to Raphinha and downgrade pukki to Broja?

Nice team that. I’ve had Dias from the off and although I’m tempted to remove for City’s tougher fixtures he’s likely going to stay put, he’s the most nailed City player in the entire squad and although Cancelo has a higher ceiling those benchings can really hurt, especially when there’s no rhyme or reason to them.

My one concern would be if Pogba provides enough Man United ‘cover’, they have explosive firepower options and I genuinely don’t believe Pogbas form can continue. Greenwood looks undroppable currently so would be my go-to with the omission of Ron.

Thank you for such a well thought out response. I will ponder Pogba to Greenwood overnight - I have a feeling you may be right. My thoughts on Pogba are he's more guaranteed to start so opted for him, but Greenwood probably has a higher threshold

          No worries Nige.
I’d be inclined to have agreed with you regards Greenwood earlier in the season, he was definitely a punt originally for me but he’s arguably the most in form player in their entire squad now, Ole seems to regard him very highly, Sancho seemingly struggling to settle, Rashford still out and I don’t consider Martial a direct threat in terms of position or ability… all of those combined convinced me Greenwood’s an asset worth keeping. I’d be fairly confident of him out scoring both Jota & Torres at that price point over the season but that’s just a hunch plus he’s a very easy price point to transfer out if he goes off the boil.

Doucoure flying under the radar in peoples teams guys? Saw him mentioned on the previous page and he's only blanked in one game (Brighton GW3) with a goal, 3 assists and 4 baps in GW's 1,2 & 4. Thats not too shabby for a 5.5 midfielder!

Dont think Gray for 0.1m more is more likely to be in and around the box? Grays data isnt great, but purely based on starting position you would expect Doucoure to drop off quicker than Gray.

    I'm in a bit of a predicament.

I misunderstood Antonio's price drop on Sunday evening and transferred him to Bamford for exact cash (I know). Monday evening, DCL gets injured. Now rumors Bamford may be injured too.

Do I transfer DCL to Jimenez end of the week or before DCL drops tonight, give up on the mid priced forwards with DCL/Bamford to Lukaku/4.5 for a -8?

Can't get Lukaku if DCL drops, so probably need to make my mind up tonight.

My own stupid fault. School boy error.

    Bachmann
    TAA AWB Coufal
    Salah Bruno Raph Benrahma
    Antonio Toney Ings

    (Foster Veltman Williams Brownhill)

    A) Bruno & Toney > Ronaldo & Doucoure for -4
    B) Toney & Antonio > Jiminez & Bamford for -4
    C) Toney, Antonio & Bruno > Ronaldo, Jiminez & Gray for -8
    D) Wildcard to this:

    Sanchez Foster
    TAA Marcal Ayling 4.0 3.9
    Salah Raph Gray Doucoure 4.5

A 3 man west ham holder here lol
    1Ft 0.3 itb
    Sanchez 4.0
    TAA Shaw Coufal White Livra
    Salah Jota Greenwood Raphinha Benrahma
    Ronaldo Antonio

    A. Coufal to Semedo
    B. Benrahma to Sarr
C Antonio to Bamford (injury news)

Didnt see the Southampton West Ham game. Was Benrahma really bad?

Currently leaning on keeping Antonio and play 451

    Cheers

      Maybe B now.
3 from any team bar perhaps Liv or Chelsea probably a mistake.
I went from 3 Spuds to zero in about 4 weeks a couple of years ago. Never again.

Yes it is probably A or B right now. Sarr has the best fixtures you'd ever want but it is Watford.

        Semedo looks nailed until gw7

Might even do a -4. Thanks

Haaland is such a joy to watch, so young but IMO the best classic CF in the world. Strong, smart and clinical. But most important dedicated to evolve and succeed.

OGS is a club legend and seems like a good guy, but the team don't seem to have any meaningful coaching. Apart from perhaps Shaw, and Greenwood, nobody seems to be getting any better.
Never mind Tuchel, Klopp or Conte, I'm sure Rafa or Nuno or even Dyche or Hasenhüttl could get more out of those players.
