World’s best FPL manager Fábio Borges speaks as we honour Hall of Fame greats

We hear from arguably the world’s greatest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) manager, Fábio Borges, as we launch our Hall of Fame roll of honour.

Here at Fantasy Football Scout, we believe it is important to acknowledge the best of the best when it comes to FPL.

This means that every year, we will toast the top five managers in our prestigious Career Hall of Fame.

The managers who can break into the top five will be immortalised on our Hall of Fame page.

You can check your own position in the Hall of Fame by becoming a Fantasy Football Scout Member and joining either of our two FPL mini-leagues.

Our Live Hall of Fame, which is updated throughout the season, had its first refresh for 2021/22 over the international break and you’ll be able to see all the correct new IDs attached to the managers in question.

And where better to start our mini-profiles of the elite managers than with Fábio Borges, our Hall of Fame number one who can boast of six top 5k finishes in a row.

You can read a more detailed interview with Fábio here.

Hall of Fame Career #1-#5 12
How do you generally approach FPL? What is your main strategy/style?

Fábio: I am definitely a stats-oriented manager. I do watch one or two matches every weekend but it is basically impossible to remember every small detail of every game and stats basically do that for me.

Regarding hits, it is very rare that I take them outside of Double Gameweeks. I like to plan ahead very carefully and since I am a very patient manager, unless there is an injury crisis, I like to stick to my guns.

What is your best FPL moment?

Fábio: When I captained Charlie Austin for a hat-trick in my first season playing. I was a casual player before but I enjoyed the thrill of a captaincy haul so much that I started taking the game much more seriously after that moment.

What are your top tips for securing a good finish?

Fábio: 1) Fixtures over form. We never know when a good period of form starts and when it ends so I think it is better to mainly focus on long-term stats since they give you a better view of what each player can deliver on average. Fixtures, on the other hand, are very important, since on average, every player does better in easier fixtures.

2) Transfers are precious. Don’t sell a player just because he blanked and someone else scored a hat-trick. Always try to buy reliable players that you feel confident having for at least four Gameweeks, even if they blank in the first three. By picking set-and-forget options and sticking with them through bad times, you can use your precious transfers on weaker spots in your team without having to take too many hits.

3) Be aware that luck is a massive factor in this game. Just because you had a bad Gameweek doesn’t necessarily mean that you made bad decisions. At the same time, just because your captain hauled, it doesn’t mean you made a good decision either. Always analyse your decisions with a critical eye but without being too harsh on yourself. After all, most factors in every football match are out of your control and happenstance plays a huge part in your team’s points in a single Gameweek.

What stats do you pay most attention to? What is your favourite tool in the Premium Members Area?

Fábio: I mainly focus on expected goals (xG) these days since I believe it is by far the most useful stat (assuming the model is reliable). I usually prioritise long-term stats since there is a lot of variance/luck in smaller samples.

Liked this insight from F Borges - including the older interview.

The origin story of captaining Charlie Austin resonates, as someone who played on and off for about 13 years before deciding to “play properly”. Also why it’s laughable when people dismiss someone immediately based on past results.

And I’m more inclined to read something than watch a video (it’s faster) so I dig his refusal to do Meet the Manager :).

Should I get Watkins or Bamford? Watkin's a big threat, Bamford got the right fixtures.

Thought of Gray but couldn't really fit him in, as I see Everton being quite attacking. And since DCL is out for a bit.

AndI just see Chelsea as hoovering up clean sheets

        1. Khark
          • 8 Years

Fair enough, Richarlison has always frustrated me when I've owned him so i have a negative bias towards him.

Completely agree on the Chelsea clean sheets, I'm just not sure Christensen will play every game? I'll be going with rudiger and reece james as a double up.

Dont think it should be looked down upon to take CR7 out after gwk7. I know Antonio is incomparible in talent, but has him from gwk1, took him out for gwk4 and it turned out great.

Granted there was luck, but the overall feel was that europa will catch up with west ham. For CR7 i dont think he will score much in the tough run of fixtures (especially now with the CL focus too)

False. Duffy is the best defender on the Brighton side by a mile. He and Dunk are beyond nailed for the season.

Williams may be as nailed as you say, but he will concede every week so you might as well give that spot up

Scenes when the best FPL manager ever says it's "Fixtures over form" instead of the oft-recommended "Form over fixtures".

Well it makes sense doesn't it? You won't catch that big initial, differential haul by doing the former, because to know they're in form they'll have had to had a run of returns already.

Captaincy comes under a smaller microscope given the individual nature, although realistically it's the two combined that makes that decision.

    1. Gunneryank
      • 2 Years

Wait, so you're saying it's more than one monolithic piece of data deciding all our fortunes rather than a more well reasoned, intricate one with multiple outcomes?

How secure starter Marcal is for lets say next 10 gameweeks? Coady has cemented his place in Wolves backline and that is the only reason im leaning towards him instead of more attacking option.

10 is a lot, he's had a few issues with injuries and Ait-Nouri is there too challenging for his spot. Not to say he won't play them all by any means but I wouldn't be confident

Defense is something i dont like to spend transfers unless it is absolutely necessary. I like to pick safe starters there for the long run.

80 to 90 percent. I have Coady and may be getting Marcal for their very nice matchups, and do the double up.

I'd say if it's security of starts that is your priority, look to Coady, or Semedo or Sa.

For the spot im about to fill with Wolves defender, yes security of starts is priority over attacking returns.

After being adamant I wasn’t playing my WC until gw8 I’ve come to the realisation that I want 13/15 of them players now

The argument that your ideal wildcard in the future is similar to one you would have this week is flawed as things can change very quickly. DCL, Antonio and to an extent Ayling, Benrahma being examples on a GW4 WC

Absolutely, totally agree. I wanted chelsea/city defenders and with Torres, greenwood, Benrahma, Antonio I felt I wanted to make some moves from a position of strength instead of just waiting for players to be rotated
I’m top 12k and felt the timing was right

Good point. Fwiw, Im WCing this week too, feel the time is right for my team. Mind sharing your draft? I havent considered a City defender as of yet but am interested to see how one could fit one in

From what I undrerstand, the situation of the Chelsea defence:

    - Rudiger very nailed at LCB
    - Alonso/Chilwell fighting for LWB
    - Silva, Christensen, James, Azpi rotating for RCB, CB and RWB
    - Chalobah and CHO as backups for RCB and RWB

Based on this, Im quite keen on Rudiger despite James' upside on WC.
    Thoughts?

Personally I think Christensen is his favoured CB with Azpi and Rudiger
At 5 he is well worth it although don’t expect any attacking returns

Did the same exact thing last GW. Rudiger immediately rewarded me. But, I want James too, for obvious reasons. Imo, James has no immediate threat to him other than rest for fixture congestion. In important games, Azpi plays RCB with James out right, and Alonso and Chilly battling it out for LWB. I think lol.

If you're getting one and don't have great bench cover, Rudiger does seem the safest bet

Its different in a good way, Id prefer Marcal to a 4.1, Vvd to James as I prefer Chelsea def over pool, and upgrade Sissoko to a 6m mid if that works

I like it, but what lineup will you be playing and who will you bench ?

I would downgrade VVD and bring in Jota for a 433

Mostly 4-3-3 but 5-2-3 at times.
By gw8 by defence will be
TAA l Rudiger l James l Cancelo Dias
So gray will be needed as first sub as I will be 5-2-3
Alternatively I will go for Torres over Dias gw8

sounds good, not many have a decent 12 and rotate, there seems to be the belief that we should cram all our money into a starting 11

          Nice team and good luck

What is the logic behind people deciding to play double Brighton defence against Leicester?

I understand some don't have a choice, but I've seen pundits who have a choice and are still deciding to play Sanchez and Veltman. I feel like I must be missing something.

If I had a choice I'd avoid it, but to be fair Leicester have been pretty poor so far despite their two wins. Wolves outplayed them and they were pretty lucky against Norwich

It’s a combination of Brighton being really good at home and Leicester not exactly firing on all cylinders

Sa or Meslier on WC. Sa is in better form but got a feeling about Meslier. Also I can keep Meslier until gw15/16 for his amazing run and then go for De Gea

Leeds defence is really poor especially with their injuries. You can't rely entirely on save points.
