FPL Q&A: How to fit in Salah, Lukaku and Ronaldo, best Everton mid and Leeds picks

The template is finally being shaken up, with Michail Antonio (£7.9m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) having been shipped by nearly a million managers this week.

With that in mind, I thought it would be a good time to use the tools and data in the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area to help answer some questions from the FPL community.

Q: Who is the best Everton midfield option? (@smallccapitalt)

A. Everton have a bunch of good midfield options – Demarai Gray (£5.7m), Andros Townsend (£5.4m) and even Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.5m) have already notched multiple attacking returns. Out of the three, I think Gray is the standout. As the below table from the last three Gameweeks shows, despite scoring three goals from as many shots on target, he is top amongst their midfielders for expected goals (xG, 0.78) and third for chances created (three). With Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) injured, Benitez is likely going to look from goals from his midfielders and I think Gray offers great value at just £5.7m.

Q: Who is the best forward under £6.5m to replace Ivan Toney? (@anathelana)

A: There’s very limited choice in the £6.5-and-below striker price bracket. Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.5m), Adam Armstrong (£6.0m) and Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m) are some of the candidates but the standout in my opinion by some distance is Teemu Pukki (£5.9m). Norwich have failed to impress so far but it is worth mentioning that the Canaries were bottom of the Season Ticker for Gameweek 1-4. However, as the below image shows, they are top of the same ticker for Gameweeks 5-8. Norwich’s season starts now and Pukki is clearly their talisman. At just £5.9m and with very low ownership, he’s a great pick for the next four weeks.

Q: Who would you pick between Patrick Bamford or Raphinha as a Leeds asset for the next three fixtures if you’re only going with one? (@FPLPHD)

A: Without going into the value/price argument, first let’s compare their numbers using the Comparison Tool in the Premium Members Area, starting off with assist potential. As the below image shows, it’s no shock that Raphinha (£6.5m) leads the way for chances created (seven to two) but the Brazilian’s numbers are not that great in isolation. Seven chances created over four matches is less than two a game and only one of those was deemed to be a ‘big chance’.

In terms of goal threat, Patrick Bamford’s (£7.9m) numbers are impressive. He has been afforded nearly double (23 to 12) the penalty area touches compared to Raphinha and has taken 10 shots in the box to the Brazilian’s three, more than triple. The fact that Raphinha averages less than one shot in the box is not great.

When you add penalty-taking duties to Bamford’s repertoire, I think it’s pretty clear that despite the difference in price, the forward is the superior Leeds’ attacking asset. Raphinha’s numbers are likely to improve with the easier run of fixtures, of course, and he’s also a good asset in isolation.

Q: Differential punts for Wildcarders in each position? (@FPLJames23)

A: I’ll skip the goalkeepers and start in defence. I think Nelson Semedo (£4.9m) is a great pick, his numbers versus Marcal (£4.6m) have been covered in detail in this piece by Neale. The fact that the Brazilian outscored him significantly last week means that the Portuguese will continue to go under the radar. If Semedo is too mainstream for you, then I would suggest Kieran Tierney (£4.9m). Arsenal switch to a back three in possession with the right-back tucking in to help the defence, so Tierney plays pretty much as a left-winger.

In midfield, my pick would be Ismaila Sarr (£6.0m). Watford could not have asked for better opponents in the next three matches: Norwich, Newcastle and Leeds. As the below image shows, they are three of the five worst sides for open play goal attempts conceded over the first four matches:

Up top, Pukki is a great differential for the reasons mentioned earlier in the piece. Raul Jimenez (£7.4m) is also one to consider: he’s yet to find the back of the net this season but is posting good underlying numbers, indicating that a haul is just around the corner.

Q: Is Conor Gallagher a must-have? (@KaartikKrishFPL)

That’s it from me for now, hope you found the Q&A useful. We discussed a lot of the topics above and more on this week’s episode of The FPL Wire, so check it out below:

I'd say it means he's not first pick.

This rotation doesn't apply to every squad.

I’d be shocked if that’s the case. He’s been their main attacking threat after Antonio… who’s suspended for the weekend, making it even more likely Benny will play. I’m not really expecting any attacking returns against United (fine by me if it means a CS for Shaw), but I’m confident he starts so I’m planning to play him

I think so - some talk of Cucho being on them from his days in Spain but Sarr took and scored three last season and one was a pretty important one to help secure them promotion.

Made the bad decision of not getting Ronaldo or Lukaku and get DCL last week so teams a mess

    Sanchez, Foster
    TAA, Shaw, Coady, Ayling, Livramento,
    Salah, Bruno, Jota, Raphinia, Gilmour
    DCL, Antonio, 4.5

    1 FT 2.2 ITB

    A) DCL > Bamford
    B) Bruno + DCL > Torres + Lukaku (-4)
    C) Bruno + DCL + 4.5 > Torres + Lukaku + Bamford (-8)
    D) Bruno + DCL + 4.5 > Sarr + Lukaku + Bamford (-8)

      A is plenty I think.

Play 4-5-1 this week - plenty of money next week and Antonio back.

Bruno still has good fixtures and could easily outscore Lukaku in the next 2 weeks.

Which combination would you rather have on a WC?

    A) Jota + R. James + White + Scarlett (fodder) - 4-4-2

    Cheers!

What’s with all the Raphinha love. He hasn’t been great to start the year and the stats show it, but I guess you could argue thats due to a slow start, but other then that what’s with his continued popularity esp from wildcarders? Is it optimism with the upcoming fixtures or are people remembering what he managed last season and think he’ll regain the form eventually?

    1. SADIO SANÉ
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

all the midfielders below 6.5 are probably garbage and he's most people's main hope there - they have had a tough start so I don't blame people for still having faith

I think there's a reasonable assumption on here that fixtures breed form. However Leeds have looked so garbage to me I still want to see a little more before going for Raph/Bamf.

But shiny new toys are fun - so I get the love for them.

He never was a big haul type of player last year really. He's a bit like Mount, will tick along with a return every few games, moreso in the better fixtures. Nothing has changed and he has not been poor at all, if anything he's been quite lively.

Also, the whole groupthink at the moment is "Leeds look poor". They've been defensively suspect in some tough games. Again, they always have been - last season they got a few hidings. But in most games, they've been pretty dangerous in attack, and scored a few goals to boot.

Leeds fixtures, being down to 10 men skews the stats. It's only 4GWs. Yes last season is probably influencing. He's likely to be very good value at £6.5m. General consensus is that he's under priced.

Leeds have not had the easiest fixtures to start off with (already played Man United and Liverpool). But Raph scored against Everton. So now with this run of fixtures to come we should expect Raph to get some decent points.

    9. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

You have to understand Raphinha's story

      - He wasn't added to the game until GW5 last year
      - He didn't make his first start until GW9
      - He didn't really get to grips with the league until GW14

      Then from GW14 onwards - he got 118 points from 21 starts & 1 sub (That's 5.4 points per appearance, or 203 points for a 38-appearance season)

He has threat (already scored in GW2), and his creativity has seen a few great created chances wasted by others (Rodrigo - we're looking at you here) and has obviously wasted a few himself - because he's human, it's early doors, there's an awful lot of variance still swirling about out there, and things are still settling down

The vast majority of people who watch him know how good he is, and can see that his price is silly - as long as he stays fit you can have absolutely no worries about how good he is, and the returns will (/should) come

Ouch! Consider selling Bruno to free up some funds & address non playing players? Minus 4 could enable you to field 11 & Dave WC. DFs Wolves Semedo / Marcal? Tsimikas would free up Liverpool spot too. Would give you flexibility with cash ITB going forward.

    2. winchester
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

currently sitting at around 15k so would not fancy a hit to be honest.. do you think bruno+tsimi out for -4 would be worth or would antonio -> jimenez be enough?

    3. Carefree Crew
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

      Keep Antonio.
If only playing 10, then a minus 4 is effectively a minus 2 if the player you'rer bringing in only gets 2 points. If they return you're in profit in one GW. Personally I judge it over a number of GWs not just one.
You've got 3 non playing players. I think it's an opportunity to address one of those. You've literally got no bench. Will ESR definitely play this week? I don't know. You could potentially end up with 9 players.

    4. Carefree Crew

"Dave wildcard" = Save wildcard. Just read back what I've written. However wildcard would enable you to address multiple players.

I'd take a 4 point hit Tsimikas & Bruno for Wolves DF & maybe Jota if Firmino confirmed out & re-evaluate next week. Like I said it's effectively a 2 point hit if the player you bring in only gets you 2 points this week. One return & you're in profit straight away.

You'd have Amartey & Obafemi as issues but your wildcard would still be in your pocket.

It also depends on your team structure, will you keep a £4.5m striker? If so you're effectively wildcarding for 3 bench players & to cover Antonio for one GW. Not sure that justifies using the most powerful chip.

Gotta love Peter Drury's comments before kickoff. The man is a wordsmith. "More glower than glitter, West Ham are into the European fire." Lol.

For me, he's one of the best.

Don’t think you can use more followed by that type of word ending in er. Like more faster is incorrect.

It loses something over text. He wasn't incorrect. Glower as in "After the boxers shook hands, they began to glower at each other." Glower definition: an angry or sullen look. Pronounced with an 'out' sound.

      B. I know it's blasphemy to mention this on here but James+Rudiger in a 5-3-2 probably beats both.

Even more so. Just think there is to much rotation risk with Torres and then Marcal is not nailed long term.
