Mark Sutherns’ FPL Gameweek 5 preview and latest team plans

Mark Sutherns is back alongside Andy on the eve of Gameweek 5 to reveal his latest thoughts and Fantasy Premier League (FPL) line-up over on our YouTube channel.

This video is an exclusive for Premium Members – and there’ll be plenty more to come in 2021/22.

Mark will be filming one video just for subscribers every week throughout the upcoming campaign, so sign up via this link in order to see them.

In this latest episode, Andy and the FPL BlackBox co-host look ahead to Friday’s evening deadline and the opening Gameweek clash between Newcastle United and Leeds United. Though, at the time of recording, the pair have both turned their backs on Marcelo Bielsa’s much-fancied attack.

The Michail Antonio (£7.9m) decision dominates the early exchanges, while Mark lends his thoughts on replacements for the stricken Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m).

Mark offers a positive review of Andy’s 4-5-1 but is left doubting his own captaincy decision when it’s suggested that Romelu Lukaku (£11.6m) could even outstrip the overwhelming armband favourite, Mohamed Salah (12.5m)

Discover whether Mark caves to Andy’s late-night mind games, or opts to stick with the Egyptian in this latest Members vid.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thoughts on starting Ayling vs Newcastle? The alternative is Reguilon, and Spurs look like they will struggle against an in-form Chelsea. But Leeds' defensive situation is not great either

I'd go Reguilon, Ayling will be playing CB.

Tough one, both as hopeless as each other. Id probably go for Ayling

Yeah I'm even tempted to use my FT to grab Omobamidele or Williams to free up funds and be functional for this gameweek. A starting 3.9m defender would be a godsend with so many desirable premiums

Both Villa n Zenit have managed better xG stats than Chelsea, is it time Spurs to take advantage?

Ayling might be the better of the two, as there's a very small chance of a CS with Wilson out.

Any major issues with this WC:

    Sanchez - Ramsdale
    TAA - Marcel - White - Duffy - Livramento
    Salah - Greenwood - Torres - Gallagher - Gray
    Ronaldo - Bamford - Antonio*

Downgrade one of the mids and upgrade a defender. You'll need a route into a Chelsea defender very shortly and Id advise starting with one tbh

Yes, good point. 5.5 price point is wise.

downgrade Ramsdale and maybe Torres or Greenwood > Raphinha; Duffy > James or Rüdiger

I would definitely want to have a Chelsea defender. Saves a transfer in the long run and Chelsea are very capable of keeping a clean sheet against Spurs (especially if Son doesn't play) and City

Brough myself to this final WC. Plan to downgrade Jota/Pogba to Raphinha in 2 GWs and get Chelsea boys

    Ramsdale
    TAA | Semedo | Livramento

Have a feeling Torres will start and explode against the Saints, and have my mind made up of bringing him in.
Talk me out of it if you're convinced my move is pretty risky.

    1. Grand Thibauto
      • 9 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

Any city player could potentially explode against saints (city scored 6 midweek, and Torres wasn't involved in any of the goals despite starting)
However, it's the following two fixtures which should make you resist as it's not the best pick over a 3-week period

this is where i'm torn as i'm on wildcard
want to take advantage of this fixture (Torres or Grealish) but also would really like 2FT going into gw7

        1. Grand Thibauto
          • 9 Years

I think Grealish is a better pick in Wildcard, he's gonna have more mins than Ferran

I can go 343 and bench him vs Chelsea, and I think I'll play him vs Liverpool as I expect that game to be relatively open. Decide to keep him or not when I probably WC in GW8. Good idea or not?

        1. Grand Thibauto
          • 9 Years

Not the worst punt if you have the WC in hand, I'd personally not bench a city player in any fixture, even if it's Chelsea

Best 4.5 mid option the need to be fielded this week so ideally with a good fixture in GW5 ?(bench fodder afterwards)

    A) Sissoko
    B) Gilmour
    C) Douglas luiz
    D) someone else

    1. Andy_Social

Sissoko has ideal fixtures for 2-3 GWs and Gilmour is good for this week. Neither team can score though, so they're both prolly good for 3 points in a 0-0 draw!

If Normann and Gilmour both start, Gilmour could be given more license to go forward. I would not expect much from either him or Sissoko, but given that Sissoko's atrocious technical ability is already well documented, I would rather go with the youngster

    Sanchez
    Alexander-Arnold Shaw Coufal White
    Salah(c) Fernandes(vc) Jota Benrahma Gilmour
    Jimenez

    Gillespie Livramento Antonio Obafemi

    1 FT, 3.1m ITB

Have a few options, ordered by likelihood I do it

    1) Benrahma -> Raphinha (my original plan before Antonio's RC. If I was to hold a West Ham attacker long term it would be Antonio, not Benny. Benny's xMins should go down I presume with Europe a factor)

    2) Coufal -> Semedo. Not convinced by West Ham defensively, but tbh Coufal was always a long hold type of player.

    3) Obafemi + Benrahma -> Dallas + Bamford for a hit. A bit iffy but would change my team structure to 343, which I like.

I think we are at the stage where having gilmour and a non-playing forward needs to be addressed. I'd take a hit and upgrade Obafemi to Bamford. Or roll the FT and do it free next GW. Not keen on Dallas though. Fixtures may be good, but I'd go Gallagher...his involvement is major. Not the kind to get a return every week (who is at 5.5) but I am convinced he is the best at that price point.

    Wilcard blessings/criticisms appreciated...

    Schmeichel
    TAA, Marcal, Tomiyasu
    Salah, Raphinha, Sarr, Gallagher
    Ronaldo, Lukaku, Bamford
    (Steele, Livramento, McArthur, Omobamidele)

The "why" part would probably be best answered by you asking who he is. 🙂

        That's what I call a differential 😉

Great team! Might downgrade Schmeichel to 4.5, Omobo to B. Williams, and keep the change to move around others

Ive pro-cheap GK, but every time I pick one I fail. Had Ramsdale in mind, then saw word about Leno perhaps getting a "planned" return. Nahh, happy to spend the .5m there for Kasper. Safest way to Leicester defense for a great run of fixtures. And no one's talking about him, which I love. 🙂

Wanted B Williams! thought Brownhill would drop to 4.4m overnight, or I'd have him! Maybe if all goes well, I can wait for the brownhill drop and upgrade Omobo to Williams. I didnt see the match, but seeing as Norwich only conceded one and he was among their best players in the bonus point standings, he keeps his place, and, as a DEF5, I can cope with having the inferior option.

Not to dismiss the advice, just to say that Ive considered it! Which means we are on the same page. 🙂

Three heavies really weaken your team. If Salah, Luk and Ron fail to fire, you'll be struggling for points.

GK: why the BHA back up keeper - should your first choice be Sanchez?
Marcal - I prefer Semedo. Tomiyasu?
Sarr doesn't float my boat. Would prefer to see the likes of Greenwood/Jota/Torres/Benny in there.
Fwds - I have gone with Luk and invested in a CHS defender. Beat the crowd and bring in James now.
      Bench is very weak.
Looks a very unbalanced team heavily dependent on the big three.

I came off a week struggling for points w/o Lukaku or Ronaldo 🙂 It can work both ways.

GK - I picked the one farthest from a price drop/from a club I dont see worrying about having 3 players at the same time.
        Marcal - price
Tomiyasu - give it a bit, folks will start talking 😉
Sarr - Admittedly, not the most confidence, but like the short term fixtures and have some other 6m options I like to swap him out for if need be. Certainly, a blank against NOR, and he's first on the chopping block.
CHE assets- outside Lukaku, Mendy, worried about too much rotation ala City. Folks have been getting burned already. That said, a path to Rudiger by GW7 could be in order.

I love a bench that plays but is "weak". Cheers! 🙂

Late as hell, but I forgot, after deciding on Kasper, put Ward in as GK2...so that's sorted 🙂

To be fair, if your three most expensive attackers (i.e. including captain) fail to fire, you’ll always be more likely to be struggling for points, regardless of whether it’s a 2 or 3 “heavies” setup

Not a massive fan of Arsenal's next 3 fixtures. Considered Gray over Gallagher? I'd say only 2 of Palace's next 6 fixtures are favourable.

I try to find players who can be set long term and narrow my transfers down to as few spots as possible. Had a long look at Gallagher last weekend. He's the real deal. I don't look at him like most players at his price, trying to capitalize on short term fixtures, I see him as a solid MID4 that has a style of play where he can pop up with a return in any given game. He will definitely outpace his price, so the value is there, just need the patience to wait out some quiet games.

Everyone is anti-Tomiyasu. At least you point out the fixtures. Fair enough. Was thinking Ayling in that spot, but wanted to go for a little flair somewhere in the squad. Might do a last minute flip. Just not sure Leeds are built to keep anyone out at the moment.

I'd like to get Gallagher in and play him as my 4th midf for all but the biggest games. As you say, he looks to be the Palace talisman rather than a streaky prospect.
I'm not anti-Tomiyasu, but he's played one game, and I'd just like to see more proof that he is nailed rather than a rotation prospect. I'd certainly avoid any Leeds defenders.

It may not translate into FPL points (bonus points anyway), but Tomiyasu is bringing a lot that is needed at Arsenal right now, mainly a positive even-keeled attitude. Really am keen on him having a long, solid career. Might be a bit early to add him, but given his flexibility and my belief that his attitude helps a team that needs it, IF Arsenal are really going to turn things around, at least defensively, I really think he can be the key.

All the hype aside, hes at a safe 4.5m price point. If I tire of him, there are loads of replacement options.

An analysis of the Arsenal game here showed that he tucks in with the CBs to allow Tierney to bomb forward. It suggests he won't get more than CS points, which White would get. You've got to think in FPL terms, not football terms.

Cant I think in both terms? 🙂

Yeah, its a fair enough point. Tomiyasu officially the "on the block" player in the WC right now. EIther I roll with White and use the .1 to make Omoba, Williams or I go with another 4.5 altogether. Maybe a WOL double up.

    ok - late night, after a week of thinking i'm pretty set on a boring move;

    Sanchez (4.0)
    TAA, Shaw, Ayling, Duffy (Livramento)
    Salah, Bruno, Greenwood, Jota, Benrahma
    Jimenez (Antonio, Perica)

    2 fts, 1.1 itb.

    a/ Ayling > Semedo (roll 1 ft)
    b/ Ayling > James (roll 1 ft)
    c/ Bruno + Perica > ESR + Lukaku
    d/ Benrahma > Saka (roll 1 ft)

Pretty set on a/ - James can wait till gw7 (and might be Rudi/Azpi)
Think Bruno will outscore Lukaku in the next 2 weeks - get Rom for gw7.
Want to get an Arsenal player, but want to see how they line up again...ESR / Saka high on the watch list - also Gabriel is the defense looks nice
Not keen on Ronaldo and then moving to Lukaku - so skipping him till later in the year.

Do you think Bamford and Sarr can outscore Bruno and Ayling?

Out of those, A looks fine.

I don't really like Bamford - haven't seen anything of Sarr to really know.
To get a forward upgrade I'd either how to use 2 fts or lose one of Jimenez/Antonio - which doesn't make sense to me right now - don't have all that much wrong so trying to be conservative and roll where I can.

really good start to the year - super happy about it

Anything obvious for this wildcard team?

442 / 352 rotation. Team value is 100.4 so not great

    Guiata 4.0m
    Trent James/Rudiger Semedo White Livra
    Salah Jota Grealish Raph Gallagher
    Lukaku Bamford X

    5.3/5.4m itb for 3rd striker.
With this lineup would you recommend cheap as possible like Scarlett or someone else

Another question, is the lure of City vs Saints enough to offset their following 2 fixtures che liv. Ideally would like 2FT going into gw7
Can't see where I can fit in a city defender right now
