Mark Sutherns’ FPL Gameweek 5 preview and latest team plans

Mark Sutherns is back alongside Andy on the eve of Gameweek 5 to reveal his latest thoughts and Fantasy Premier League (FPL) line-up over on our YouTube channel.

This video is an exclusive for Premium Members – and there’ll be plenty more to come in 2021/22.

Mark will be filming one video just for subscribers every week throughout the upcoming campaign, so sign up via this link in order to see them.

In this latest episode, Andy and the FPL BlackBox co-host look ahead to Friday’s evening deadline and the opening Gameweek clash between Newcastle United and Leeds United. Though, at the time of recording, the pair have both turned their backs on Marcelo Bielsa’s much-fancied attack.

The Michail Antonio (£7.9m) decision dominates the early exchanges, while Mark lends his thoughts on replacements for the stricken Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m).

Mark offers a positive review of Andy’s 4-5-1 but is left doubting his own captaincy decision when it’s suggested that Romelu Lukaku (£11.6m) could even outstrip the overwhelming armband favourite, Mohamed Salah (12.5m)

Discover whether Mark caves to Andy’s late-night mind games, or opts to stick with the Egyptian in this latest Members vid.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Who do we prefer over Cancelo and Dias? Cancelo scored midweek, can play LB or RB and seems nailed. Dias more nailed obviously.

Cancelo if you have good bench

Well with Mendy out of the frame, I think Cancelo gets enough games to render him viable, subject to Pep caveats of course.

Cancelo really seems to be getting a lot of games.
I'm worried now Europe and soon cups are starting that we'll lose the City consistency of selection - but still might be worth it.
My experience last year says Laporte/Stones & Dias is the way to go.

    1. @FuzzyWarbles

Given the fixtures of all three clubs, I'd prolly stick with Ayling and not use an FT for what could basically be a sideways move to similar points.

That said, if the transfer were truly "free", I'd prefer a Wolves DEF from the lot.

AZ on the Scoutcast: why do Leeds need to invest in another CB - they already have 4?!!!

Firpo is fine. Have the players...will be fine.

    1. RogDog_jimmy

Llorente getting injured seems to be an issue, and Struijk hasn't ever seemed good enough to me.

I feel like Firpo could end up ok though. And if they can keep Ayling out of a CB position they should be ok.

It seems to me what they need is help for Philips. But everyone in the league needs solid CMs.

Coufal & Benrahma to James & Raphinha for -4?

Thinking I'm gonna hold James & Raph til gw11 at least so may as well bring James 2 weeks earlier than planned. It also solves my triple West Ham problem and also gives me Leeds coverage.

    Thoughts?

    1. RogDog_jimmy
      • 3 Years

I can see why you'd do this - but I'd hold the Benrahma move.
Coufal > James should be a net positive this week.
I think that MU have been pretty poor defensively - especially on the counter, which is exactly what WH are good at and Benrahma had a decent rest in the midweek game.

Brought Benrahma in gw3 for FOMO.

Looking ahead at the fixtures, I'd only really want Benrahma now for gw7 at home to Brentford (and in that week Leeds are home to Watford as well).

Not wholly convinced by Raphinha so far this season either but feel I do need some Leeds attacking coverage with their fixtures ahead and aside from Bamford, Raph is the best option

    Enablers:
    Samedo Macal Tierney white
    Who we want:
    James Rudiger Cancello Dias
It seems these combinations are key for team set up. I have made my bed and gone for enablers. Should i have gone for who we want or a mix of the 2.

    1. RogDog_jimmy
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 7 months ago

interesting - TAA is just a given yeah?

i think if you're going 3 at the back - then it's TAA, and one enabler & one "want"
For me it's TAA, Semedo, James (Duffy, Livramento).

If I were to get another it would be Duffy > Cancelo/Dias I think. Which is a big commitment.

What I am ignoring is 4 at the back. I have a blind spot for doing it for some reason. There is more value in defenders atm; especially with Citeh/Chelski fixture coming up.

    2. House Frey Wedding Planner
      • 5 Years

I think a mix of premiums with the odd enabler works best.

The enablers often tick along with just clean sheet but the upside of the premiums make a huge difference

So you vote on balance. I tend to agree

Mix of the 2 works well for cash rotation in attack as well as a balance team. Going for premium defense will reduce that but as of now, we dont have that problem.

I'm planning to go with 5 "want" defenders on WC and roll with 5-2-3 but the landscape could easily change in couple of weeks.

Agree with that except to say I see Semedo as more than an enabler right now. I think he can hold his own amongst the big boys. Come GW7 I should be on TAA, James and Semedo. If Semedo disappoints, I'll double up on Chelsea with Rudi. Looking further ahead and for the rest of the season my plan is to segue the Chelsea 2 into that City pair in prep for the CWC no-show, then back to the Chelsea lads in prep for the DGWs (although they'll be rotated).

      1. Eze Really?
        • 9 Years
        2 years, 7 months ago

Yeah. I say "enabler" more in relation to price point. Semedo/White or Tierney /Marcal is what I was attempting to get across. I have Semedo Tierney atm and i might like it but moving to Chelsea/Citeh becomes complicated.

I've got Livramento and intend to keep him all season. I'm striking lucky with Duffy too but will look to lose him in time. I can see a scenario where I go 4 at the back with TAA, 2 Chelsea and a City.

KDB is back!_ I own him and he scored me 7 points last week when Gray came off my bench for him.
Looked like he needed that game yesterday but feel he has a reasonable chance of starting against the Saints.
Sterling dropped again but he's 'gonna be a force soon.
I'm playing Jesus(c), Torres and KDB v the Saints.

Sissoko best 4.5 mid at the moment?

    1. @FuzzyWarbles
      • 13 Years
      2 years, 7 months ago

      what defines "best" for you.

If guaranteed starts with no hassles, then probably Sissoko.
For someone with at least a bit of attack potential, but has already shown he can get rested (+parent club omissions), then Gilmour.
For something a little in between - McArthur. Some nice returns for a player at that price if you look at his past seasons. That said, Will Hughes is at Palace now, worried about McArthur longer term.

If its a spot you can wait another week on, Brownhill is on the verge of dropping to 4.4m...that would be my pick once he drops in price.

      1. Botman and Robben

Unless you are on a WC, Id keep him. Yeah it sucks to see his price drop to 4.4m (of course, a return of some sort this weekend could prevent it) But Brownhill does have a little something to offer I feel. Wouldnt have him at 4.5 if WCing this weekend, but if im not WCing and I have him, I endure the likely price drop.

Heard Barnes looked sharp last night. If you feel you can live with no bench (Tsimi, Oba, Antonio), then I would try to avoid the WC and make one/two moves at a time. Its by no means a disaster as is, but given last weeks returns, I understand your desire.

Thanks for your feedback. Yeah I wasn’t impressed by last week’s returns. And want to start preparing for fixture swings and players in form. Barnes has been v disappointing and has had Europa. Chances of him starting?

          • 13 Years

Its well documented, there is risk with Barnes because of how his position is only really ideal for a style of formation that basically blocks someone like Iheanacho from starting.

Its a tough call, mate. He had a nice run pre-injury, showing he can sustain form for longer than a random match here or there and the fixtures are fantastic..but if he blanks yet again...

He and Raul Jimenez need to sit and have a chat about FPL and how they need to start scoring some points 🙂

Mostly settled on my WC, barring couple of nagging issues,
Firstly, do I keep Shaw on WC? Or switch him to a James/rudiger now or make the switch in a couple of GWs?
Secondly, if I go Gray to Doucoure to save that 0.1 how much of a downgrade is it in terms of points potential?

Do you think Christensen gets a start against Spurs or would it be safer to pick -

    Williams (WAT)
    or
    White (bur)

Just had a go at a GW8 WC team - whatcha think?

    Ramsdale
    Trent, James, Tierney, Rudiger
    Salah, Torres, JWP
    Lukaku, Auba, Antonio

    Steele, Livramento, 4.5, 4.4
    Bank 0.0m

This assumes Ramsdale is clearly first choice by then - Sanchez if not. No MUN/TOT is a risk, but fixtures/form respectively aren’t great.

Would prefer CR7 to Auba and down grade elsewhere

Thing is, that’s quite a chunk of change to find (2.7m). Auba has CPL, AVL, WAT in 3 of his next 4 from GW8 - could be a decent punt.

      * JWP could also be Raphina

      Midfield definitely needs strengthening.

Torres may not be nailed then, and JWP is an underwhelming pick. I think Armstrong up front (if you want to attack Southampton's gw8-12 fixtures which is why I assume you picked JWP) and downgrade Auba to spread the money around the midfield would be a better option

Yeah Armstrong’s one to keep an eye on for SOT’s fixture run. Raphina another option in a similar price range. I think I’ll want an ARS attacker for their run - could be Pepe/Saka if downgrading Auba, but the latter seems more reliable for goals. I also think some MCY cover for 8-10 makes sense - question is who?!

I assumed he meant Adam Armstrong (new Saints striker)

Meant Adam Armstrong. Been involved in a couple of goals already this season and at 6m is priced cheaper than JWP.

Pepe/Saka/ESR are ones to watch and maybe Arsenal midfield for gw8-11 could also bring points as a far cheaper alternative to Auba.

Re City cover for gw8-10.....I'd probably go with one of the more nailed City defenders but not before gw8

Crazy to captain someone other than Salah this week? Options are:

    1. TAA
    2. Torres
    3. CR7

Nice. Too soon for me, but if Trent continues on his trajectory and Mane steals Salah points, it will be worth consideration.
This week Lukaku could feast on a broken Spuds.

I think you need to do it where you're confident of a cs

would appreciate some advice on wc post below 🙂

        Wow that's quite a stat.

I have been tempted to go with Trent as captain but not sure I have the balls to pick him over Salah just yet.

If Trent was on penalties however.....

Now this is the thing. I'd like to see the numbers, as my hunch is that when TAA outscores Salah it's by a point or four, whereas some of Salah's will be 20-point gaps. It's the lack of a ceiling that tips it for Salah, I'd have thought.

    On a WC

    A Saka
B Benrahama (current, can’t go back to him as price rise and team is priced to 0)

almost settled. don't want to spend too much longer on wildcard tinker!
main weaknesses. bit of fear not owning united but can't have them all

    Guiata
    Trent James Semedo White Livra
    Salah Jota X X Gallagher
    Lukaku Bamford X

Have 20m remaining and happy to keep some itb for some rainy days

    a) Grealish Raphinha + 5.5m left for 3rd striker (eg: Scarlett + 1m, Broja +0.5m)
    b) Torres Raphinha + 6.3m left for 3rd striker
    c) Pogba Torres + 5.1m left
    d) any other combo / advice?

probably more certainty of grealish starting but you never know.
what 3rd striker would you choose in general if he'll be 3rd sub most weeks?

This will likely be unpopular choice but I have Pukki, Eduord and Dennis on my watchlist as a third striker.

Gray for now. May downgrade my 4th mid in Torres to a cheapie forward next week. That's one of the plans 🙂

I wouldn't worry about giving Man U a wide berth for now.
I'd have a 3rd striker - Jimenez maybe, making it easy to slide over to Antonio.
Torres would be okay because you've got stronger cover if he's rotated.

any obvious downgrade to allow for Jimmy. would also need to keep some itb for Antonio. stretched as it is.
could do Armstrong but that has Livra Armstrong Gallagher bench which seems like wasted money.
need a fresh set of eyes!

so in a vacuum Pogba over Raphinha in the short term?
could always do the switch if Leeds click
option C probably means I can't back a transfer for gw7 but hard to plan ahead

It will give you some Utd coverage for gw5-7 and you could move Pogba out later if required.

Actually think Raph is a better option for gw5-10 so would pick him over Torres. Should leave you with around 6m for a striker or you can go for a 4.5 striker and use the remainder elsewhere

Torres more explosive but against che liv it’s not necessary to have city attack. Hmm pogba to Grealish/Torres for gw8 could work too
