Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 5?

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) looks to be the leading captain candidate for Gameweek 5, but are there any viable alternatives to the Egyptian for this upcoming round of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) action?

First, we will assess the fallout of the Gameweek 5 captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of today’s 18:30 BST deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

As you can see from the current results, Salah is the runaway leader of the Gameweek 5 captain poll. The Egyptian midfielder has accumulated 60.4% of total votes from our users at the time of writing.

Only one other player has garnered more than 10% of votes at this stage, with Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.6m) in second place, backed by 14.74% of users.

Patrick Bamford (£7.9m) occupies third place with 4.9% of votes, with Romelu Lukaku (£11.6m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) behind the Leeds United man, with 4.45% and 2.47% respectively.

    Sánchez
    Alexander-Arnold Shaw White Tsimikas
    Benrahma Torres Salah Raphinha
    Toney Ronaldo

    Subs Steer Ayling Antonio Brownhill

    2.2m ITB and 1FT

Was thinking about shipping Toney for Bamford, but then I looked at Dennis.
Dennis has nor & NEW and is a great differential, then dead-ending him when I plan on GW8 W/C

    Thoughts?

Going triple premium + TAA on wildcard restricts the team quite a bit, admittedly. But I think I will still do it to not have to plan too many transfers for GW7.

Which one of these do you think keeps the most important flexibility?

    A) Bamford in a 3-4-3, with the option of switching to Antonio, Jimenez et al.

    B) Jota or Greenwood in a 3-5-2, with the option of switching between mid priced mids.

Is Davinson Sanchez a good option on a WC? 3 clean sheets first 3 games then conceded 3 without him.. Cheap price at 4.5m but is he nailed when all fit? Any Spurs fans??

He'll miss out on the occasional game on current form. If form drops, and when Rashford returns, he might miss out more.

Personally think the Palace defence is super underrated, Andersen and Guehi both underrated and Guaita is a solid keeper - will that matter at Anfield though? feels a bit wrong captaining a player against a team I think are better than people are realising

It’s a fair point, decent defence Vs best or 2nd attack, unstoppable force V immovable object if you will

I still think Liverpool get 2

The best thing about having Ron and Rom up top is you can just leave them there the whole season and sit back and se how they fight it out for top spot in the forwards points table.

And the worst thing is when they blank for a couple of weeks in a row whilst bamford and Antonio rake in points 😀

Bamford could blank for more than just a couple of weeks...

Maybe, but last season he didn’t really do that, and he is already returning every other game this season

The short answer is who knows but I think a lot of this 3 premium histeria will go quiet if the likes of bam, dcl, Wilson, Antonio etc can go on a strong run again

It is like the hysteria around Leeds assets. What if that goes quiet?

You still going to go without Lukaku who are capable of murdering defences?

        I don't think 343 works (unless the 3rd striker is 6m)

442 or 433 are the formations I could get to work

        1. Malkmus
          • 12 Years
          2 years, 6 months ago

I think the jury is out on 343 or 442 with the big 4, I'm going:

          Sanchez
          Trent-Shaw-Marcal (4.0-4.0)
          Gallagher-Gray-Salah-Raph (4.5)
          Ron-Rom-Ant

But if gallagher/gray drop in form then may have to go 442. Hopefully other cheap mids hit form to swap in/out

I think it's not as bad to go triple premium as I originally thought.

For e.g. you could easily do ronaldo + 4.5 fwd/mid to any 2 of the mid priced (7.5-8m) fwd or mid in 2 transfers.

Hi guys, need a hand - whether to save FT or make small change in prep for weeks to come.

It'll be good to see how KDB comes along, wondering if there may be a plan to get him in at some point or stock up city defence.

    Sa (Steer)
    TAA, Shaw, Marcal, (Livra, Williams)
    Salah, Jota, Mount, Benrahma, Allan
    Ronaldo, Jimenez (Antonio)

    A) Save FT
    B) Benrahma to Sarr or Gallacher
    C) Mount to Raphina to prep for Chelsea def
    D) Take a hit to get in Man U mid.
    E) something else?

    Morning all

On a WC and debating which team is better-

    a.
    Sanchez Steele
    TAA Duffy Livra Marcal WHITE
    Salah Greenwood McArthur JOTA DOUCOURE
    Ronaldo Lukaku Hwang

    b.
    Sanchez Steele
    TAA Duffy Livra Marcal LAPORTE/£5.5m
    Salah Greenwood McArthur GRAY RAPHINHA
    Ronaldo Lukaku Hwang

Leaning towards A though Jota is a bit of a rotation risk but has 2 good games ahead, as does Raphinha.

I'm not convinced Bebharma starts but I guess West Ham have to assess it over the next few days.

      So we're all guessing...

Any wildcarders looking to hold Antonio?
Would love to see your midfield 5, thanks

I would hold him if you're not going 3 premiums

Could even hold him with 3 premiums. Something like this

        4.5 / 4.0

        TAA, Shaw, Marcal, Livramento, Williams

        Salah, Raphinha, Gray, Gallagher, 4.5

        Antonio, Ronaldo, Lukaku

Need to have had caught all the price rises to afford that - I'm 0.4m off!

My main issue is poor team value 100.4 and already off to a slow start so thought Bamford a good option. Next week of course will be tough not owning Antonio

hold and Sissoko is what I'd do on WC I think - I removed him but for Ronaldo(c) next week

Is three premiums really so bad? No Antonio is what I fear most - not feeling bad about missing out on Jota, Greenwood or Torres

    Sanchez Steele
    TAA Shaw James Semedo (Livramento)
    Salah Raphinha Saka Gray (Sissoko)
    Ronaldo Lukaku (Scarlett)

Upcoming FTs on Gray-> Gallagher, Sanchez->other 4.5m when fixtures turn, Saka punt to someone else if required

I'd downgrade James or Shaw and upgrade Saka to Jota or Greenwood personally

Hmm yeah it's an option. Fancy my Saka punt though and turning Shaw into Cancelo - don't want to have to start a 4.5m defender eveyr week in a 442

The interesting thing about three premiums will be if Son emerges. It will be easier for most three premiums to shift to Son. People are talking about three premiums as the unbalanced teams but there are different types of balance. A three premium can't move as fluidly around the low-mid price players but they can adapt quickly to the emergence of other mid-premiums.

The thing that I'm not seeing much is three premiums with a 0.5 itb to allow them wiggle room to fix problems. It's totally possible to do and I think that 3P who don't do that are going to find themselves in a hole almost immediately

Interesting points, thanks. An injury or lack of patience with Ronaldo does provide the ultimate power moves of Ronaldo->Antonio/Bamford and a 5.5+m up to Son

Yes my team above has 0.4m ITB - unfortunately 0.1m/0.2m short of Shaw -> Cancelo in GW8 - but I'm not completely inflexible

Tbh as much as natural urge is to maximize your budget and step up from one price bracket to another I would prefer to keep that 0.4 so that emerging players around your existing price points are available to you when the pop up a 0.1/0.2

Lads, would you take any of the hits below?

    A. Mahrez + Antonio > Lukaku + £4.5 -4

    HELP PLEASE

On wildcard and regretting selling Antonio on Sunday. Bought for 7.5 and he is now 7.9 and potentially dropping again tonight.

I think my team looks best with Antonio Salah pairing instead of Pogba/Ronaldo but feel daft for the price fall. Would you therefore go:

    A) Antonio/Salah
    B) Pogba/Ronaldo

Any thoughts on the price falls also welcome.

    Thanks

I don't like the Pogba pick, however, I also wouldn't recommend getting Antonio back in if you lost the value you had in him

Same situation but looking at different moves.
Are you playing 3 up top and do you have viable bench options?
I bought at 7.6 sold 7.7 and now have to pay more.
Do we think he’s price locked? If he’s def dropping don’t want to bring him in on wc.
Tough choice. Prob going Bamford this week just not sure if I go 3 up top

        Thanks Guys,

I’ve got a healthy bench now so easy to cover:

        Guita (4.0)

        TAA, Cancello, Samedo (Marcel/3.9)

        Saka, Jota, Salah, Grey, (Gallagher)

        Lukaku, Bamford, Antonio

Just play Marcel this week instead of Antonio.

        Or Ronaldo/Pogba instead of Antonio/Salah.

He’s close to falling tonight but not guaranteed….

Fairly similar, also going guiata even though pool this week

I got James over Cancelo and Livra 5th def
I keep coming back to a better midfield but that rules out luk ant bamf
What’s your plan if Gray Saka don’t deliver?

            Hi HMC,

Plan is one of Grey, Saka or Jota go in week 7 (likely Grey) to a 4.4 mid to upgrade defenders to James/Rudiger for the Chelsea run.

Saka is in for Burnley then spurs/Brighton first sub or injury cover before the ticker goes green again.

Before taking out Antonio I could have afforded Raphinia but the 0.2 loss killed me (doh!)

Thoughts on this order among my fodders hehe. Need to play two this week as I'm holding Antionio

    1) Tsimikas (could be a cameo, but high upside if he starts and more likely than not to stay on the bench if not)
    2) Gilmour (possibly somewhat attacking role?)
    3) Omobamedele (better CS odds than Coufal, unlikely to come on if he doesn't start)
    4) Coufal (Some attacking threat, nailed, but unlikely to keep a CS)

Carabao cup midweek is where Tsimi will start
Would start Coufal (good assist potential) then Williams

    Suggested changes?

    1 FT

    Sanchez
    TAA, Christensen, Marchal, White
    Salah, Jota, Greenwood, Benrahma
    Ronaldo, Jimenez

    Subs: Steele, Sissoko, Livra, Antonio

    0.3 in the bank

Could well do. Antonio to Bamford also tempting, but Think Antonio can do as well as Bamford moving forward

In a 12 man draft league, so the striker options are at a minimum.

For a truly woeful one week punt.

    A) King (nor)
    B) Joelington (LEE)

    1. Jordan.
