Raphinha and Ayling injury latest as Saint-Maximin keeps up fine FPL form

We begin our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 5 Scout Notes with analysis of Newcastle United v Leeds United.

NEWCASTLE UNITED 1-1 LEEDS UNITED

  • Goals: Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.6m) | Raphinha (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Joelinton (£5.8m) | Patrick Bamford (£7.9m)
  • Bonus points: Karl Darlow (£4.5m) x3, Saint-Maximin x2, Raphinha x1

Gameweek 5 got off to an entertaining start as Newcastle United and Leeds United shared a point at St. James’ Park.

With two shaky defences on show, it was a predictably open-game which saw a combined 38 attempts on goal, with Allan Saint-Maximin’s (£6.6m) equaliser cancelling out Raphinha’s (£6.5m) opener.

LIVELY SAINT-MAXIMIN

If anyone was going to score for Newcastle, it was always going to be Saint-Maximin, who dug out a low shot across the face of the goal to equalise just before half-time.

Leading the line in the absence of Callum Wilson (£7.4m), the Frenchman was electric throughout, ending the match with five goal attempts and eight FPL points.

Often ridiculed for his lack of end product, Saint-Maximin has now returned in four of the opening five Gameweeks, with two goals, two assists and four bonus points during that time. And with Watford (a), Wolverhampton Wanderers (a), Tottenham Hotspur (h) and Crystal Palace (a) up next, his FPL ownership – which currently sits at 8.8% – will surely be into double figures by the time Gameweek 6 arrives.

Matt Ritchie (£5.0m) also impressed from a Fantasy perspective. Having started as a wing-back, he later shifted into a back four but still found himself in some promising positions and came close to scoring as he rattled the post. He also registered seven crosses, created two chances and took some set-pieces.

Defensively, the league’s worst defence so far this season left plenty of gaps, and as result, conceded 21 shots to Leeds. That meant that the returning Karl Darlow (£4.5m) was kept busy, as he registered an eight-point haul despite conceding, thanks to nine saves and three bonus points.

RAPHINHA AND BAMFORD DELIVER ATTACKING RETURNS

Raphinha and Patrick Bamford (£7.9m), both of whom were the subject of injury rumours during the week, started for the visitors and combined for the opener after just 13 minutes.

Picking up the ball wide on the right, the Brazilian swung in a cross which bent towards the far corner and found its way into the back of the net after a neat step over from the impressive Rodrigo (£6.3m).

However, Raphinha was withdrawn after 67 minutes, with Marcelo Bielsa providing an update after the game:

“He has a problem in his hip.”

Leeds’ injury crisis at centre-half may have got even worse, meanwhile, with Luke Ayling, who was deputising in that position, limping off:

“Let’s hope it’s nothing that prevents him from playing because it will be the fourth option at centre-back that we’d lose.” – Marcelo Bielsa on Luke Ayling

As for Bamford, he struggled to make an impact for large periods, but did miss a good chance in the second-half and at least returned five FPL points for his owners via that assist.

Daniel James (£6.0m) also made a first start for Leeds since his summer move from Manchester United, replacing Jack Harrison (£5.8m) who has tested positive for Covid-19, though he was ineffective and replaced on the hour mark.

As a result of tonight’s draw, Leeds remain winless this season with three points from five games. However, their fixtures between Gameweeks 6 and 10 (see below) should at least give them an opportunity to start moving up the table soon.

“We had sufficient chances to go in at the break with a bigger margin, but we didn’t score in proportion to the amount of chances we created. We were missing some efficiency and capitalising on the chances that we had. We had a lot of possession, perhaps we could have created even more danger especially in the second half.” – Marcelo Bielsa

Newcastle XI: Darlow, Manquillo (Krafth 81), Hayden, Lascelles, Clark, Ritchie, Willock, S Longstaff, Almiron (Fraser 62), Joelinton (Murphy 90+1), Saint-Maximin

Leeds XI: Meslier, Dallas, Ayling (Shackleton 89), Cooper, Firpo, Phillips, Klich, Raphinha (Summerville 67), Rodrigo, James (Roberts 61), Bamford

Anyone opting for an extra defender priced 5.5-6.0 over a midfielder?

    Feel like going 442..

I have TAA James Shaw Semedo but looking to upgrade Shaw to Cancelo for GW8 so can play 442 433 or 343. Just having that one decent sub gives good flexibility

Cancelo is looking like a must when those fixtures turn. Nice defence

I’m looking to line up with Rudiger TAA Shaw Cancelo eventually

I've been playing a 442 with a strong back 4 since the start.

Honestly think it’s a good move. Would rather have an attacking full back from the top 4 sides over Sarr & Gallagher for example

There's value in the CB's also. Rudiger and Van Dijk were two of the first picks in draft 1 and never left. Nailed, heaps of cs, and will nod in the odd goal from a set piece.

Remeber last season Cancelo ended on 168 points and dias on 169. When cancelo played 5 less CS games (missed 25 points). With Mendy in Jail, Cancelos amazing physical status and that he can Play RB/LB and roam into midfield.
He just got subbed on 1 time last season, so if you have a 4,5 sub to cover any rotation (ex White, Marcal) he looks like a decent bet to outscore Dias this season.

Oh, missed atleast 30-40 points that in fact would make Cancelo a 200 points defender.
I expect him to play more this season.

I don't think it's a case of Dias vs Cancelo. One or the other suits better depending on the setup. For my team, which is a 442 with a strong back 4, I need consistency of starts more so than explosivity (TAA ticks all boxes of course) as the steady drip-feed of points is more valuable than the odd haul. With a big back 4, there's no room cash-wise for a 5th defender at 4.5 and preferably not even 4.2 as it's already squeezing the budget. The less chance of Gilmour/Bissouma etc subbing in for a powerful defender, the better. If playing 343 though, then I think there's more room for a decent backup defender and in that case, I'd take Cancelo in a heartbeat.

I'm thinking of two CHS defenders - ideally James and Christensen. I have TAA and Semado so could easily go with 4 at the back.

Oh, not sure about that, can pick one of Mane and Ronaldo I guess. As of now, I was considering Salah and a 6-7m midfielder with Ron-Rom-Bam/Ant upfront.

              IMO, you can go either

              TAA, Rudiger/James, Dias/Cancelo, White/Marcal

              Or

              TAA, Dias/Rudiger, Semedo, Tierney

I chose the latter on WC with Livramento as the fifth def and went 442. For third forward slot, the only "budget" option who is firing is ASM at 6.6, going further down with Pukki/Armstrong is risky. You can get more quality for 4th def (e.g. Semedo, Tierney) and 5th mid (e.g. Fornals, Sarr, Traore, Gray, Gallagher) slots a lot cheaper than 3rd forward slot.

              Totally.

have taa Shaw and James, will swap ayling for cancelo or Dias. I think livra is good enough backup to cover rotation risk. I honestly think cancelo massively underperformed last year he could easily be as good as trent

Target end points (although every season differs) should be circa 2400 pts

That means every position needs 200 pts returns

This can only be achieved by being flexible!

              I think it's something like a gameweek weekly average of 65 points/week.

Scores are getting higher every season. I had 2453 points last seasan and that got me a rank of 28k.

Very true. Last season I scored 2367 and was 150k. A few years before I scored 2311 and finished 9k.

Last season was an outlier, which happens from time to time. In general, 2500 or so is enough to be in the mix or even winning it. You can look back through the years and see the odd 2600 total but it isn't a case of the winning total getting increasingly higher season on season.

But yeah 2400 isn't as consistently close to the summit as it used to be, fair enough.

Last season was an abnormally high average total because of all the cancelled games due to covid causing plenty of DGWs.

67.5 ave gave you a 650ish OR last season which would have a fair chance of winning the thing in a normal season.

Will Antonio drop to 7.8 before Leeds? Made a schoolboy error by transferring him out instead of benching.

Personally benched him bissouma, Antonio looks like he could get a goal or even two agaisnt the best of defenders.

Take the 2 points from bench and keep him for Leeds.

The price lock only starts when it goes from red flag > available.

Whilst Harrison is red flagged he can fall in price.

                    Sounds like he's out.

I tried to shift him on, lack of funds but guess I would have bitten the bullet on Gallagher away at Liverpool.

These tight turnarounds for West Ham from Thursday nights in Europe will disrupt them in the league this season.

Advice you got on preparing your team early in the week is sound. Re Ings, why not, Everton is full of defensive players that have huge errors in them, and Villa looked ok ish vs Chelsea despite 3-0 loss.

Oh well, I have already shipped him out. If he has taken a knock on his knee then chances of him playing this weekend not looking good.

I have already shipped him out so do not have to worry about him for GW6.

2 FTs and 0.1 ITB and can't think of anything to do to be honest. Any ideas? Greenwood has Villa at home, Jota at Brentford away. The only reason Christensen missed last game is cause he played3 games for Denmark in international break. Matip a bargain at 5.0 imo given he's started all games.

                  Sanchez
                  Matip Christensen Livramento
                  Salah Greenwood Jota Sarr
                  Lukaku Ronaldo Antonio

                  Subs: Duffy, Sissoko, Williams

I’ve looked at the fixtures and I want Bamford for 8/10 fixtures ahead of Antonio.
Does Bamford to Antonio and getting back Bamford the next week make any sense?
Probably not more so if I’m gonna captain ronnie vs villa next week.

That captain choice is kind of independent of who scores most... Antonio over Bamford.

No Benrahma confirms 5 at the back I think against United. I expect us to go with this:

                  Areola (please)
                  Zouma Ogbonna Cresswell
                  Coufal Soucek Rice Masuaku
                  Vlasic Bowen Fornals

Could be a very tight game if so

Or if United score early it opens it up.

West Ham v Man U has a bit of an edge to it normally...

                    Could be a cracker.

I'm sorry, but it's still most likely Fab 🙂

Could be 4-2-3-1 with Yarmo up front if Moyes still doesn't trust Masuaku

But yeah, it's a question of who he trusts the most: I expect only one of Masuaku, Lanzini and Yarmo to start

Lukaku only performed slightly better than ronanldo when playing against the Italian top 6

Which is to say goals were limited

You only need to look at the performance against pool to see this translate into the prem

Caveat is city have a weakened back line at present

I am probably going to be forced to hit the wildcard button earlier than expected.

Any thoughts on these two teams?

                  a)
