Dugout Discussion

Marcal the most-bought defender of Gameweek 5 ahead of Wolves v Brentford

Two of the statistically better defences of the 2021/22 Premier League season so far meet at Molineux this lunchtime.

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Brentford gets underway at 12:30 BST.

Neither of these sides has conceded more than one goal in a single match in this embryonic campaign, with the Bees only an 89th-minute Brighton strike away from registering their third clean sheet of the season in Gameweek 4.

Both defences are among the top five clubs for fewest ‘big chances’ conceded, too.

Wolves’ defensive fortitude and favourable fixture run has no doubt contributed to the raft of recent transfers used on Marcal (£4.6m), Fantasy Premier League’s most-bought defender of Gameweek 5 – although last weekend’s two attacking returns were obviously the main catalyst for that.

Bruno Lage’s side are generally underrepresented in FPL, however, with Conor Coady (£4.5m) their most-owned asset at 7.0%.

Ivan Toney (£6.3m) remains Brentford’s most popular Fantasy asset at 13.7% but he has lost around one million owners since the beginning of the campaign, with only a solitary attacking return against Aston Villa to show for his endeavours so far.

As for the team news, it’s very uneventful: both sides are unchanged.

GAMEWEEK 5 LINE-UPS

Brentford: Raya, Pinnock, Jansson, Ajer, Henry, Janelt, Norgaard, Canos, Baptiste, Toney, Mbeumo.

Subs: Fernandez, Thompson, Ghoddos, Jensen, Onyeka, Zanka, Forss, Wissa, Roerslev.

Hard to believe anyone who bought in Marçal watches football regularly over the last season, those two assists last weekend couldn’t have been more of a fluke. How on earth is he keeping Ait Nouri out of the team?

The marking on the penalty was enough but then add the crap shots from distance, poor decision making when he tries to cross rather than play in Traore, and the miscontrols on a couple of passes out wide, especially that cross-field from Neves. He’s had a stinker!

Hopefully he won't be doing so for long, he's been awful. Fair enough for his positioning for the second FPL assist last week but the first was a cross to no-one and still ends up in the net

Wouldn't buy Jimenez until he gets his first goal this season. Once he bags one the pressure will be off and he will go on a scoring streak I'm sure. Don't want to invest before then as who knows how long this barren run will last.

Depends on their fixtures. I trust Burnley as they are usually good for 8/9 CS a season. And those CS will usually come against weaker opposition.

I mean, I know we all get caught up in the stats but maybe we should concentrate on the results more.

Wolves, so far this season will be 4 losses in 5 games. No goals scored in 4 of their 5 games.

The only game they did score in included an own goal and was against a team that is favourite for relegation.

Results speak louder than wasteful stats I suppose.

Place is awfully toxic today for some reason, more so than usual

Chill out lads and ladies, if you're this wound up already might give yourself an aneurysm by the end of the day

No it's always been like this on match day. It brings out the very worst in people. In particular those people who don't have much in their lives apart from FPL.

It is but it seems worse today, definitely sad

It is. I guess people struggle with dealing with frustration, envy, ego etc. It's very unproductive though

I have Sa and traore (I know I know) so it's been a very frustrating morning. I guess you can come on here and rip into people who own toney being amateurs or gloat over people if you're not having a bad day, but it's best to sit down and start trying to get things into perspective and work out what mistakes you have or have not made
