Dugout Discussion

Marcal the most-bought defender of Gameweek 5 ahead of Wolves v Brentford

Two of the statistically better defences of the 2021/22 Premier League season so far meet at Molineux this lunchtime.

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Brentford gets underway at 12:30 BST.

Neither of these sides has conceded more than one goal in a single match in this embryonic campaign, with the Bees only an 89th-minute Brighton strike away from registering their third clean sheet of the season in Gameweek 4.

Both defences are among the top five clubs for fewest ‘big chances’ conceded, too.

Wolves’ defensive fortitude and favourable fixture run has no doubt contributed to the raft of recent transfers used on Marcal (£4.6m), Fantasy Premier League’s most-bought defender of Gameweek 5 – although last weekend’s two attacking returns were obviously the main catalyst for that.

Bruno Lage’s side are generally underrepresented in FPL, however, with Conor Coady (£4.5m) their most-owned asset at 7.0%.

Ivan Toney (£6.3m) remains Brentford’s most popular Fantasy asset at 13.7% but he has lost around one million owners since the beginning of the campaign, with only a solitary attacking return against Aston Villa to show for his endeavours so far.

As for the team news, it’s very uneventful: both sides are unchanged.

Being one of those who WC and brought in 2 Wolves players, I can confidently say as bad as Wolves have been today, Brentford were superb when defending. Time to take their assets seriously. Expecting a better hame from.Wolves against Southampton

I decided to have Pinnock 1st bench instead of Bissouma or Livra.

The result, at the least 8 points off the bench if there is a Benrahma no show.

That is like sharing strawberries and cream delight with the other half 🙂

A mix, but it's mostly Jimmy.

Him throwing off his head protection not long after his missed headed chance really is a bit of a metaphor for how much he feels it's affecting him.

A combination of the three. He just isn’t getting quality service.

Traore spent the game over hitting crosses and, while Hwang was lively and got into some great crossing positions in the box, Brentford got wise to it quickly and stopped him getting many successful crosses off.

Jimenez wasn't even in the box for more than half of those crosses. He needs to be doing far more.

It shows in his heatmaps. He's playing deeper where if he wants to score he needs to be up in the box anticipating chances.

To be fair, if Traores hitting the cross you’re better off standing near the corner flag if you want to get a touch on it.

He's been so close to lots of points the last two weeks. Hwang should have been quicker with the chance he set up for him, semedo cost him an assist last week and he's going to start putting the chances he's getting away soon

This is not a popular thing to say, but I owned Jimemez through good fixtures the entire month before his injury. He was poor. Wolves never looked like scoring.

This season it is the exact same performance from him and them. When pundits mention about before his Injury blah blah what they really mean is the season before last.

He was in decline before his injury. I'm basing that on being an owner for about 5 game weeks pre his injury.

He just needs to get his first imo then he'll bang them in, have to give credit to Brentford for defending well and restricting chances and Southampton and Newcastle are poor defensively.

XG this XA that, neverending articles about projected incisive thoughts...

Forget it. Wolves can be summed up as follows:

They are a one man band. And that man is not a footballer and would do better at Sale Sharks.

Fun to watch but relegation candidates for sure.

So many times on here they talk to the pundits and they all agree on one thing, that the best metric to predict future points is XG.

But there is a better metric.

          It's called goals.

I wouldn’t call it misleading. The stats are what they are. The problem is that it’s really a false assumption that these stats have that great a bearing on future performance. There are so many unknown factors.

Traore still convincing some people he had a good game. His crosses are always over hit or have no purpose. He looked dangerous last season too and only managed 4 attacking returns in 37 games last season.

Anyone else having regrets captaining Salah instead of Ronaldo?

West Ham away a very different proposition to Newcastle at home. Rice and Soucek going to pummel the midfield battle.

How about forgetting last night's match, captaining Bruno and having no Ronaldo or Lukaku? Also TAA, Antonio & Torres. Sofa time.

Hard to know who to prioritise shipping out -

      Traore, Jimenez, Torres, Bamford...

I've cocked my team up these past few weeks

Klopp on Alexander-Arnold absence: “It was one [team change] we weren’t expecting. Trent woke up this morning and wasn’t feeling well so we had to send him home - it’s not Covid, though, to be clear.”

Definitely not Covid though, maybe he's pregnant?!
