FPL Gameweek 5 round-up: Saturday goals, assists, bonus and injuries

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) moved to the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points table with a third double-digit haul in five Gameweeks, scoring and assisting in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Ivan Toney (£6.3m) also rewarded his patient remaining owners with two attacking returns in Brentford’s 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Ismaila Sarr‘s (£6.0m) brace saw him record the day’s joint-highest FPL score – a feat that Matthew Cash (£5.0m) matched in Aston Villa’s 3-0 win over Everton.

Ferran Torres (£7.2m) was an unused substitute as Southampton held Manchester City to a goalless draw, while Arsenal registered back-to-back 1-0 wins thanks to budget midfielder Martin Odegaard‘s (£5.5m) free-kick.

Our usual, more detailed Scout Notes will follow for all of the day’s games but in the meantime, our resurrected Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from the day’s Gameweek 5 fixtures.

GOALS, ASSISTS, PROJECTED BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

FPL Gameweek 5 round-up: Saturday goals, assists, bonus and injuries 10

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) missed Liverpool’s meeting with Crystal Palace through illness but Jurgen Klopp confirmed that the right-back’s ailment wasn’t Covid-related, adding:

“This morning, after breakfast, Trent didn’t feel right. We actually planned to start him but Millie did an incredible job.”

Thiago Alcantara (£5.4m) also picked up a calf problem in the 3-0 victory over the Eagles that Klopp hopes isn’t serious.

Pontus Jansson (£4.6m) and Rico Henry (£4.5m) limped out of Brentford’s win over Wolverhampton Wanderers but Thomas Frank confirmed the former was “fine”:

“[Pontus Jansson] is good, he’s fine, no problem. [Rico Henry] had a minor issue with his ankle plus he was also on a yellow card and he played against Traore.”

Shandon Baptiste (£5.0m), sent off for two bookable offences in the win over Wolves, will serve his one-match ban in the EFL Cup in midweek.

Mikel Arteta said that Kieran Tierney’s (£4.9m) substitution in the victory at Turf Moor was due to cramp:

“He had a problem and he was cramping. The pitch was pretty difficult today. It was long and it was pretty warm to be playing here and some players suffered in the last 10 or 15 minutes.”

Rodrigo (£5.5m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.3m) both missed out on Manchester City’s clash with Southampton due to previously undeclared injuries, meanwhile.

We knew that Everton were set to be without the sidelined Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.1m) for their Gameweek 5 match but Rafael Benitez was hit by a further three injury blows in the run-up to the trip to Villa, with Jordan Pickford (£5.0m), Richarlison (£7.5m) and Seamus Coleman (£5.0m) all absent.

The Everton boss said:

“With the tackle of Tarkowski, Richarlison was complaining about his knee during the week and he couldn’t do it.

“Pickford has a problem with his shoulder, he couldn’t do it.

“Seamus Coleman. At the end of the training session, he was a little bit tight, he felt his hamstring.”

Leon Bailey (£6.4m) had an eventful 20-minute cameo: he scored and assisted before limping off late on, saying of his injury:

“I think it was from the shot, I think I hit it too hard! I started feeling a little bit stiff in my quad – I don’t think it’s anything too serious.”

Dean Smith also was forced to withdraw Cash and John McGinn (£5.9m), who had a concussion.

FPL TAKEAWAYS

FPL Gameweek 5 round-up: Saturday goals, assists, bonus and injuries 11
  • Brentford’s defence again impressed, with a misfiring Wolves not hitting the target once and mustering only four shots from inside the opposition area. To neatly sum the two sides up: the Bees’ rate of expected goals conceded (xGC) can only be bettered by Manchester City, while Bruno Lage’s troops have the division’s worst shot-to-goal conversion rate.
  • Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola had both sounded warning noises in the run-up to Gameweek 5 about rotation and tiredness, and the pair followed those ominous comments up by making six and five changes respectively from their midweek line-ups. Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) and Ferran Torres (£7.2m) were among the most high-profile benchings, with Klopp pledging more of the same in 2021/22.
  • As was the case in their last top-flight stint, Norwich’s defence looks there for the taking. While the benefit of doubt could be given to the Canaries after a tough Gameweek 1-4 fixture run, they allowed a Watford side who were without a big chance in three matches six such gilt-edged opportunities on Saturday. Four of those openings fell to Sarr alone.
  • After keeping just two clean sheets in 2021 up until the beginning of September, Southampton have recorded back-to-back shut-outs. They didn’t allow Manchester City a single shot on target until the last minute at the Etihad.
  • Two £4.0m goalkeepers made the starting XIs on Saturday: Ben Foster and Asmir Begovic. Pickford’s injury accounted for the latter, while the Athletic reported that Daniel Bachmann (£4.5m) had a knee problem – although he did make the Watford bench.
  • Salah has reached 50 FPL points quicker than in any of his five previous seasons.
  • With Aaron Ramsdale (£4.5m) again between the posts and the back four unchanged, Arsenal recorded a second successive clean sheet – and, as they did last week, didn’t allow a single big chance en route to their shut-out.

FPL OWNERSHIP AND CAPTAINCY – TOP 10K

Salah was hugely backed with the armband among the leading top 10,000 managers this weekend, with the other four main captaincy contenders either yet to play or uninvolved on Saturday.

Just over 5% of the top 10k played their Wildcard in Gameweek 5, with Wolves pair Marcal (£4.6m) and Nelson Semedo (£4.9m) entering the ‘template’ overhauled team along with Leeds duo Patrick Bamford (£8.0m) and Raphinha (£6.5m) plus Demarai Gray (£5.7m).

Everton looked attrocious against Villa, even against Norwich I wouldn't be confident. Brighton feels like the safer option IMO

I know, I like Begovic because he can be a great differential. Brighton plays away against Crystal Palace, I feel they will concede a goal.

    Few random questions;

    - How did White get a bonus yesterday?
    - How did TAAs price rise despite him not playing?
    - How did Sarrs price shoot up whilst not being hugely close?

      Clean sheet, passes
It rose before he missed the game
The estimate thresholds are just that, estimates. There's perhaps something new in the mix, or a different formula.

Apparently Burnley attempted to over 30 crosses into the box so headed clearances would have helped White in the BPS.

I don’t really understand/trust the price change mechanisms anymore

      - The BPS System calculated that due to the efforts Ben White has put in, he deserved 1 point, on par with Gabriel.

      - People can still buy him even when not playing.

      - That? well how the hell does any price change...?

      - How did White get a bonus yesterday?

He didn't have that great of a game. Made a few big mistakes but he did other things that score well on the BAP scoring.

      - How did TAAs price rise despite him not playing?

It rose the night before he was ruled out with illness.

      - How did Sarrs price shoot up whilst not being hugely close?

Price prediction sites aren't 100% accurate.

From his debut with Chelsea in August 2001 until December 2005, Lampard appeared in 164 straight matches — by far the most in the history of the league for an outfield player. That he did it as a box-to-box midfielder makes it even more impressive.

Lampard overcame nagging injuries, fought through minor illnesses and was important enough to the Blues to never be replaced for four straight years.

Kinda impressed how managers like mark and andy in some degree always get it right with their moves. Mark went for sarr and mbuemo and andy did benrahma>sarr. Its like they cant fail. On paper players like raphinha and gray should do aswell but they just dont.

Yeah "it's like they can't fail" is just a big old load of bollocks - It's the downside of there being absolutely no filter or fact-checking on here - there's an awful lot of misinformation that gets propagated

        GW1:
        - Mark: don't get Bruno because you won't want to sell him
        - Bruno: hold my beer (and a hattrick)

        GW3:
        - Mark: Lets sell Torres Mahrez Toney for hits
        - Torres, Toney, Mahrez: hold my beer (and 35 points)

        GW4:
        - Mark: Don't get Ronaldo he might not score as much at man utd
        - Ronaldo: Hold my beer (And a brace)

        ....

Oh yeah, Mark is one of the best FPL managers out there but the Ronaldo stuff was so wrong. Basically said hey, I'm not sure Ronaldo will score much because I own Lukaku and I'm not sure United will supply him enough, so he can handle the likes of Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles.

          1. Cok3y5murf

He didn't say that tbf. The main takeaways from that episode were that A, United would have to cross more than before and do not have great crossers, and B, Ronaldo is more of a flat-track bully than Lukaku. I thought it was a great episode. He definitely priced himself out of a Ronaldo move by going for Lukaku a bit early, but Lukaku has matched Ronaldo so far, so why would he care?

            1. @persecuted_by_mods
                2 years, 7 months ago

He did a weird thing where he acknowledged that when cavani plays they did cross to him and change how they played, and also again acknowledged that the crossing can come from Bruno and Pogba instead of the fullbacks but then kind of settled on they won't get him service, was a tad strange

But you're right Lukaku has matched and going off serie a if Lukaku gets Chelsea penalties no reason he won't outscored (fpl points) Ronaldo

              • Qaiss

                2 years, 7 months ago

Is Ronaldo more of a flat-track bully than Lukaku? Yep, so far they've matched one another but we'll see over the next two/three games. It just seemed pretty biased as he had gone for Lukaku early and said only 1-0 to United because he didn't have him.

                1. Cok3y5murf

Yeah, the 1-0 to United was definitely quite bizarre. I couldn't see it myself.

According to the data from last season in Serie A, Ronaldo was more of a flat-track bully than Lukaku. Not that Lukaku was fixture-proof but more so than Ronaldo. I do think Chelsea are close to fixture proof though and much better than United who imo are only the 4th best team and even behind Liverpool. They are relying on individual talents more right now.

Yet they are both doing worse than me. Lol.

        I don't follow Andy but

        - Mark sold Torres ahead of a 19-pointer.
        - Mbuemo has been a bad pick up to now.
        - Mark jumped prematurely on Lukaku. Doubt he would have done it had Ronaldo been coming to the league when he did it.

The difference is that on the whole he makes far more better decisions than bad ones.

Thinking of Sarr aswell, but GW8-16 Watford have LIV, EVE, SOU, ARS, MUN, LEI, CHE, MCI, BRE.
He might be able to score in some of those but they are not easy fixtures.

Newcastle are awful but gor what it's worth we have Schar and Fernández back on the bench Friday night. Dummet back in training. And Darlow had his first start the other night.

Defence is definitely going to improve going forward a bit I'm sure. Until the next injury crisis hits

I think it's more of a note on Sarr than investing in Newcastle defence.

We already saw how Darlow made a difference, even if many of the shots he faced were poor too.

I very rarely make early transfers but I pulled the trigger last night on Benrahma to Sarr. I have Antonio and I think that’s enough. Watford’s next two fixtures look to good to pass up.

Variance and bad luck has really hit me this week which I was kind of waiting for after a decent start to the season and in the space of a day my team has gone from being a team I'm happy with with no pressing issues to me feeling like I need to get rid of at least 4 players which is WC territory. Utterly sick to death of Jota. Getting no returns from the last 2 weeks is an absolute injustice. Mane misses 3 sitters from Jota's assists against Leeds and now Jota misses that chance yesterday which is up there amongst the worst misses I've ever seen. Unbelievable. His general performance yesterday was just woeful. He needs to get out of my team.

Not really anyone except Greenwood doing better for a similar price. He’s getting in the right places and will no doubt haul as soon as you drop him.

He is 7.5 million mid playing for one of the best attack in the league, and when he plays usually as a striker so oop, not going to start every game but Klopp will rotate all 4 of his strikers. JOTA is a bit wasteful, but he is also very clever and gets a lot of chances, so could really break your season if he has one of those says.
