Mendy injury latest as Chelsea defence impresses again

We continue our Scout Notes of the weekend’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) matches with analysis of Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea.

For a briefer recap of all of Sunday’s action, check out our Scoreboard summary here.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 0-3 CHELSEA

  • Goals: Thiago Silva (£5.4m), N’Golo Kante (£4.9m), Antonio Rudiger (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Marcos Alonso (£5.7m), Mateo Kovacic (£5.1m), Timo Werner (£8.6m)
  • Bonus: Thiago Silva x3, Rudiger x2, Alonso x1

ANOTHER CLEAN SHEET FOR CHELSEA

Chelsea have made an impressive start to the season, collecting 13 points from their opening five matches. During that time, they have kept four clean sheets and are still yet to concede a goal from open play.

Against Spurs, Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.9m) replaced the injured Edouard Mendy (£6.0m) in goal, who was ruled out after taking a ‘huge hit’ against Zenit in midweek.

“Edou got a huge hit and we tried everything in the last days. He never felt fully comfortable in diving and getting another hit on it. Yesterday in training, we decided if a miracle doesn’t happen overnight then Kepa will play.” – Thomas Tuchel

At the back, Andreas Christensen (£5.0m) returned to the right of the Blues back-three, which meant a wing-back role for Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.0m). As a result, Reece James (£5.6m) was on the bench and has now started just 14 of Tuchel’s 24 Premier League matches in charge.

Despite the changes, Chelsea were difficult to break down, especially after the introduction of N’Golo Kante (£4.9m) for Mason Mount (£7.4m) at half-time, as they restricted their opponents to just two shots on target and 0.73 xG.

In addition to the clean sheet, centre-backs Thiago Silva (£5.4m) and Antonio Rudiger (£5.5m) both scored and registered huge hauls for their owners, with 15 and 14 FPL points respectively.

ALONSO STARTS AGAIN

FPL Gameweek 5 round-up: Sunday’s goals, assists, bonus and injuries 12

It’s now five consecutive starts for Marcos Alonso (£5.7m), with Ben Chilwell (£5.6m) still awaiting his first Premier League appearance of the season.

At Spurs, the Spaniard thrived and supplied the assist for Silva’s opener, as he ended the match with four shots in the box, 42 final-third touches and a massive 15 crosses, all game-leading totals.

Above: Defenders ranked by xGI 2021/22

Alonso looks far more than just a placeholder for Chilwell right now, though the latter will surely be handed his first start soon as Chelsea compete on a number of fronts.

“[Chilwell] came from a Champions League win and from 90 minutes and a strong performance [in the final] and had a good end of the season in general. Then it was individually for him a tough Euros because there were chances I think when he thought he could have played, and he did not. It was hard for him to totally relax and to get this personal disappointment, that he would never put out on the team, off his shoulders. And when he arrived here [for pre-season] I felt he was a bit mentally tired, a bit still worrying about the situation.

Marcos was here the whole pre-season, he did every single training session and he took this opportunity and was so, so great with such huge quality and attitude. So, Marcos was crucial for us from the first day in training and then he delivered in Chilly’s position. And these are our two specialists for the same position, so this is a tough competition for both of them. We had talks with Chilly about the situation. There are no further worries for Chilly, he has to be patient and keep on training.” – Thomas Tuchel on Ben Chilwell and Marcos Alonso

KOVACIC IN FOCUS

Mateo Kovacic (£5.1m) has now provided one goal, three assists and two bonus points so far this season. As a result, he ranks eighth amongst all midfielders for FPL points, but is his attacking output sustainable?

The Croatian international has been heavily involved in the final-third across the opening five Gameweeks. In fact, amongst all team-mates, only Alonso and Mount have registered more touches in that zone. However, he doesn’t get too far beyond that, with just six penalty area touches to date.

It’s also worth noting that his three assists have arrived from an xA total of 0.83, and with just four shots in the box, the likes of Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) and Conor Gallagher (£5.6m) probably remain better budget options.

At just £5.1m, we can’t really argue with the value Kovacic is offering right now, but despite that, the fact that he would take up a valuable third Chelsea spot may not be optimal, especially given the Blues’ fixture schedule from Gameweeks 7 to 11:

“I was absolutely not happy with the first 45 minutes. There were individual performances that were already great like from Kepa and Thiago Silva, and even more players were good, but in general we lacked energy and being more relentless in duels.

I had the feeling that we wanted to impress by pure skills but in a game like this in the Premier League, a derby away at Tottenham, it’s not only about skilful play. It’s also about aggression, winning duels and performing better as a team.

We lacked energy and we spoke clearly about it at half-time but the second half was a very good performance and a well-deserved win. It was a very good reaction so I’m absolutely happy with our performance in second half.” – Thomas Tuchel

SPURS STRUGGLES

After winning their opening three Premier League matches, it is now back-to-back 3-0 defeats for Spurs, who have scored just one goal from open play this season.

However, there were positives against Chelsea, as they were the better side in the opening 45 minutes and welcomed back Son Heung-min (£10.0m) from injury, having previously missed two games with a calf strain. The South Korean international was at the heart of Spurs’ early chances, though he did understandably tire as the match went on.

Following Gameweek 5, Spurs are seventh in the Premier League but rank near the bottom in various underlying numbers, with the caveat that they have already faced arguably the two best teams in Europe – Manchester City and Chelsea – so far.

    What to do with Toney?

    A: Hold
B: sell and bring back In GW10

You could hold if you have other problems, no reason why he couldn't score in 2 of those next 4 fixtures.
Before this GW it looked like a probable trade, but confidence is form.

My major problem this week is whether Raphinha is fit or not. Even if he misses just one GW, will want to keep him, so any way I could field 8 attackers(don't like to field more than 3 defenders unless absolutely necessary) is by selling Toney, as my other forwards are Antonio and Ronaldo. Should've mentioned, will probably WC in GW8.

Unless you can upgrade him to Antonio then yes get rid.

If you can only downgrade to Dennis then keep.

I would also not get rid if it meant -4. Better to have a 3rd playing striker than having to play a 4.5 mid.

Just realised I’ve been planning to wild card the wrong week. I’ve earmarked Chelsea players for the Southampton game onwards. I was thinking this was after the international break but it isn’t. Whoops.
So wild card during the IB or before Southampton?

Based on Tuchel's comments and his squad picks throughout this season, here's the list of nailed Chelsea players:

    Lukaku, Rudiger, Mendy

Everybody else has someone Tuchel considers good enough to play in their preferred position(s) in his 3-4-2-1 lineup. This has been obvious enough with the spinning tops everywhere, but one: Alonso v Chilwell

Chilwell has been on an extended mental break but is still considered top brass. Heck, the reason for his break so far is down to the effect of not getting enough time for England because of how good he (and Tuchel) thinks he is, as seen in the quote in this article

This is the reason Alonso is being overlooked. Not that Alonso is bad. Not that he won't get points. Not that Chilwell will start the very next game... But that nobody, not even Tuchel, knows when Chilwell will start

And that's gonna be an annoying sideways transfer to have to make, if you're getting Alonso by GW6/7 for a run that stretches until GW12 (late November), especially since Chilwell finally got some minutes in his legs last week

    1. OneArseneWenger32
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

agreed but alonso passes the eye test surely..so can see why guys with playing def bench risk getting him in..can easily get you a couple twenty pt weeks and i'm not exaggerating.

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 6 months ago

I know. I got Tsimikas. I got Jota

There are short term punts that are explosive as hell

But the timing of this Tuchel quote messed things up. He's telling us this now (well, last week), when Chilwell is finally getting some minutes. It's a transfer that might go tits up as early as GW9

And having your explosive 5.5 wingback rotate isn't as fun in real time as the logical big-picture view that made the decision to get Reece James, for instance

Again, I'm not saying he's a bad asset. He's been one of the best in the game for points per minute for ages now. Just that the timing has a huge potential to be annoying

If Tuchel had said Chilwell is now second choice, or even inferred it, that would have been a no-brainer. But he's clearly said it's been an extended break for mental health reasons. That leaves many possibilities open

Yes, there's the possibility that Tuchel will keep this break on for many more months. I can't predict that

One major improvement I have seen in Alonso is his defensive work, he looks better in that department as compared to previous years. This could be the main reason Tuchel is not willing to rotate him but sooner or later, it will happen.

Talk is cheap and managers love to talk. Tuchel's actions on the other demonstrates he has little faith in Chilwell.

I got James when I played my wc this week, if I had the opportunity again I would choose Alonso easily

Ziyech and CHO, along with Pulisic

Thing is, your competition doesn't have to be better than you for Tuchel to rotate. Just has to be good enough for that role to keep you on your toes

It's the most brutal roulette I've seen in the game. Heck, keeping the roulette active is the only reason Chalobah has started twice when there are four CBs preferred to him

How can Kante not be safe?

    a) Save FT (usually my preference unless something v.urgent), which would allow me to bring in more Chelsea following week.

What would you guys do with Torres and Grealish.

Was thinking hold Torres, due to price increases and sell Grealish for now

Help much appreciated chaps - 1FT and 0 ITB...

    Sanchez
    TAA, Shaw, Coady
    Salah, Greenwood, Jota, Gray
    Ronaldo, Antonio, Bamford

    (Steer, Livramento, White, Mendy)

Am considering the below to get 3 Chelsea in (including Lukaku) whilst keeping Ronaldo and Salah:

    GW6 - Jota -> Sarr/Raphinha
    GW7 - Bamford & Greenwood -> Lukaku (C) & Kovacic
    GW8 - Shaw -> Rudiger

    Cheers.

Thinking of using my 2FT to move Shaw and Toney to Rudiger and Saint Max. Question is, with 0.1m to spare, do I move now or wait til near deadline, as there are midweek games but risk being priced out?

As crazy as it may sound, I think a Chelsea clean sheet vs City is possibly more likely than a clean sheet for Utd against Villa. Somethings just telling me that Villa will get a goal which is why im tempted to move this week to dodge price changes

With that 0.1 you can afford to wait a day or two maybe more. Just monitor the likelihood of Rudiger & shaw price changes.

It's getting caught out with a Rudiger rise and Shaw drop that I'm concerned about, suddenly I'd be 0.1 short.

both will happen this week, no doubt. I think it's ok to move early for safety. surely those guys won't play carabao. I agree, i don't think united will keep it clean this week. The bookies are giving them a 44% chance of doing so (Chelsea given 32% chance in comparison)

A possible wildcard team for GW8.
      What do you think?

      Mendy
      TAA Cancelo Dias Rudiger
      Salah Grealish Raphinha

Bench: 4.0 gk, Livramento, two 4.5 mids

Too much in defence.. Downgrade one or two and get villa players probably mings/ings + i would be tempted by everton players from gw 8 onwards DCL or gray.

My take on Antonio vs Bamford:

As good as Antonio has been, his 3 hauls this season have been against
      - Newcastle (poor defence)
      - Leicester (were down to 10 men and were chasing the game)
      - Crystal palace (Below average defence)

After the Leeds fixtures, his next 6 fixtures are all (apart from Spurs) against teams in the best 6 for xG conceded this season

Meanwhile Bamford in his next 6 fixtures only faces teams in the bottom half for xG conceded this season (apart from Wolves)

In my opinion, Antonio still hasnt faced a challenging defence yet and its difficult to predict how he'll perform in these upcoming fixtures.

If you already have Bamford, dont revert the transfer imo.

Sure we’ll be seeing a few big at the back wildcard squads - I’m think this ..

      Sanchez, 4.0
      TAA, Dias, Cancelo, Alonso, Rudiger
      Salah, Benrahma, Sarr, Gray, Gilmour
      Ronaldo, Antonio, Pukki

Play 2 of Sarr, Gray, Pukki, Benrahma any one week - and they great cover for a defender blank.

I think it’s great. I don’t know if I’ll do it though. Maybe after this week?

      1. Dr. Rog
        • 14 Years

this doesnt look affordable at first glance but could be very good. there is a fair bit of money sitting on the bench however.
i'd be tempted to get another fodder to fund an upgrade to cover the 7-8mln slot in midfield.

        1. RogDog_jimmy
          • 3 Years
          2 years, 6 months ago

I can move Pukki down to a 4.5 and get
          Gray + 7.7
          Sarr + 7.3

Which lets me get in Raphinha really as there’s no one else I really fancy just yet. Could upgrade Sanchez to a 5.0 too.

I have pretty great TV - 102.0 right now (not taking into account sell value).

Ha. True true. Feel like I’d want at least 2 playing bench with that defense though - ideally 3.
Can easily see a couple benches at a time.
4.5 mids can do the job.

      3. RogDog_jimmy

        Ok slight edits.

        Schmeichel, Foster
        TAA, Dias, Cancelo, Alonso, Rudiger
        Salah, Benrahma, Sarr, Raphinha, Gilmour
        Ronaldo, Antonio, Street

        0.3 itb

Bench one of Benrahma, Sarr or Raphinha each week - but realistically I’ll assume one defender doesn’t play each week really.

Probably be wildcarding next week for the fixture swing…what to do this week? 1.0 ITB, 1 FT. Tempted by Raph - Gray for a week…
