Scoutcast: Is it time to shift FPL funds from midfield to defence?

Joe and Andy help Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers prepare for Gameweek 6.

After a mixed bag of results from their defenders and midfielders last week, Joe and Andy are looking to make some minor changes to their teams.

Fortunately, they are still in good shape from a Wildcard only the week before, which should make further tweaks to their squads easier. Well, that’s the plan.

For Andy his risk-taking midfield, which includes rotation-prone Ferran Torres (£7.1m) of Manchester City and misfiring Wolves man Adama Traore (£6.0m), could do with an autumn clean-up. He reveals the midfielders in his thoughts to replace them.

Meanwhile, Joe feels his defence could do with an upgrade, especially with another Chelsea asset.

Armed with a raft of data, this week’s episode finds out who are the best Blues at the back to bring in.

One of Manchester City’s rearguard would also help Joe’s team, he believes, as he looks to navigate the new few Gameweeks.

The pair also give their latest thoughts on whether to get Romelu Lukaku (£11.6m), Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7m) or both.

Elsewhere, they are keen to see who is facing the top flight’s latest whipping boys, Newcastle, Leeds and Norwich, when they frisk the next four fixtures.

Joe and Andy bring in the live chat gang into discussion for their insightful advice, and there’s teams, differentials and captaincy decisions to reveal.

In addition, Joe and Andy catch up on the Scoutcast’s management of a veteran Fantasy manager’s team, who has had to dip out of this campaign for mental health reasons. With a top 100 finish last season, the pressure is truly on to maintain his strong record.

Seb was unable to attend this week’s edition after he became a dad this week. Many congratulations to the Scoutcast presenter and his family.

I'd go Gallagher. Great time to buy him right now - right after a 3-0 loss so no one is thinking about him. He has the highest xGI of anyone at that price and is looking quite talismanic being on set pieces and playing at #10.

He looks very impressive as well. I spent a lot of time last night looking at stats and videos. The only doubt is his goalscoring history- look at his last few seasons and how many he scored

Tends to be from specific games.

Just go to match data, select the game, and then you can change the filters from average position to other things.

I'd say the members area is pretty useful here. It's autorenewal otherwise I might have not signed up this season. I've only looked at Sofascore this season as I had no idea they went into so much detail

You get all XG data on FBref too plus a player comparison tool with a rather more detailed analysis of passing stats.

Just about the only useful thing about members' area is if you're interested in big chances and making your own tables.

I'm considering a path where I don't buy any Chelsea until GW9 and save my WC. I think City in as a priority in GW8 looks the better play. They always beat Burnley by a hatful and I want in after the Liverpool game when their stock will be low and people are likely focused on Chelsea.

Plan is to save 2 FTs and do:
    GW8 - Grealish + Cancelo
    GW9 - Lukaku + Rudiger/Alonso (replacing both United players) -4

While Chelsea's good run technically starts in 7 with SOU bre NOR new BUR

It's really the last 3 that you really need him for. Ronaldo for EVE lei can probably keep pace vs SOU bre.

A -4 and a 2 week delay in picking up Chelsea saves me the WC and gives me:

    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo Rudiger
    Salah Raphinha Gallagher Grealish
    Lukaku Antonio Bamford

That's really close to the team I'd WC to in GW8 so unless my team falls foul of injuries (quite likely - thanks Leeds....), quarantine over IB (also possible), I can make it through with this plan. I'd save WC for 14 then to WC in triple United after their run of games and the return of Ronaldo.

    1. SADIO SANÉ
      • 8 Years

any combination of Chelsea defenders and Lukaku makes that switch to United in GW14 pretty easy without wildcard but that idea/team seems decent - what's the triple United anyway? Ronaldo, Shaw and ?

Greenwood or Rashford. Maybe DDG if the defense is strong. WC allows me max flexibility to choose.

I personally don't like Grealish pick for GW8. I would pick one CHE def for GW7, than saving FT for planned Grealish move.

Despite starting all games so far, Grealish has only 1G & 1A (both of them in 5-0 wins).

      1. Camzy

I actually think Grealish is one of the most undervalued picks in the game.

The concern was his minutes and he looks super nailed on, especially since Sterling looks a bit hopeless. He will need time to bed in, but the other thing that really made me hopeful was that when KdB came on at the weekend, he was taking up much better positions because he didn't have to drop deep to play make and could focus on getting in behind. Was also a big factor in the Leipzig game.

Two tough fixtures now, but he is one of my biggest priorities once GW8 comes around. I really like that he's under the radar. Hope he puts in more bright performances with no returns vs Chelsea and Liverpool.

I think Spurs is a no-go personally and Son's price is much more prohibitive than Grealish. You don't have to agree ofc, but that's just my take.

There are a few players who I think are undervalued at present:
Grealish and Gallagher being the biggest ones.

I would agree as well if I hadn't seen City's shape with KdB back. Once KdB plays, Grealish plays much more aggressively and nearer the goal - a better version of Sterling. We will see but I'm confident on Grealish emerging as the City attacking asset to own.

Agree that the best timing to transfer in Lukaku in place of Lukaku is GW 9. Ronaldo (Eve + Lei) can outscore/level Lukaku (Sou + Bre) in GW 7+8 .

The problem with targeting City players is naturally rotation and the spread of points. In 5 games this season with 11 goals scored, Grealish has only 1g 1a and no bonus points. He does seem to be pretty nailed so far, although injuries and failing to sign a striker has surely helped that, but I just don't know if I'd prefer to put put money (and transfers) into getting him even with those fixtures over just going straight for Chelsea assets that could equal or better his points for less and where it would save you another transfer. I'm even considering Foden with thinking along the same lines but the transfers in and out and then still possibly getting little return for an 8m player in a few games where City thrash opponents just feels like it's not worth the risk.

I'd put that down to needing time to get used to the system. If we're talking results based, he did very well vs Leipzig in the CL. I think his relatively poor FPL returns so far is a blessing to keep his ownership down.

My biggest concern with Grealish is minutes. And that doesn't seem to be a problem tbh. Sterling gone off the boil.

Also, Grealish fills a mid-price midfield bracket with no standouts at the moment. I'm betting that he will emerge as the one to own. I'd much rather go Grealish than Mount or Havertz.

That's true, I'm hoping myself Gallagher has a quiet weekend so I can avoid needing to deal with another price rise. I think he'll be fine for minutes, certainly didn't think he'd get so much before the season started with Pep's history of easing in new players but I guess his hand was forced a bit with the Kane saga ending unsatisfactorily for City and injuries, but Sterling has been on the periphery for a while anyway. At this stage I'm nearly considering holding onto Sarr for longer and just bulking up my defence in the time to come with the way mid options have gone.

But maybe you're right, with KDB and Foden back it adds to the minutes risk but also might give him more freedom as well as more scope for points. I think more than anything he just needs to learn to be more selfish in front of goal. Doesn't shoot anywhere near enough and he has the ability to play the perfect through ball or cross but plays safe too often. I feel like it might take the full season to get him into that really greedy and confident mindset that the likes of KDB or Mahrez have where they'll shoot or play a long pass in nearly any scenario if they think it's on because they know they can make it happen.

Hmm? City 5 Burnley 0. Isn't that the annual scoreline between them?

The thing is, City already beat 2 teams 5-0 and hardly anyone gained because we didn't know who to own.

    Any advice here appreciated

    Sanchez
    Shaw, Reguillon, Coufal, Semedo
    Bruno, Jota, Raphina, Benrahma
    Kane, Antonio

Steele, Dcl, Bissouma, Livramento 1ft 2.4 itb

Kane is a placeholder for Lukaku next gw. Im considering Dcl to Vardy for free. Is Salah too risky to go without for the next 2 considering he has city after Brentford? I’d be getting him for Bruno after. Thanks

Just having a look at WC options for next week…have most gone for 4-4-2 if keeping CR7 and Lukaku? I could get something like this, but struggling how to get a good 3-5-2:

    Sanchez, Foster
    TAA, Alonso, Semedo, White, Livra
    Gray, Salah, Sarr, Raph, Sissoko
    Ronaldo, Lukaku (Scarlett)

Popular pick is with 4 defenders 4-3-3 or 4-4-2

Marcelo Darwin Bielsa talking about evolution of his injured players. Guess we gotta wait till Friday pressers to find out what kind of evolution took place.

I'm amazed people are surprised when we don't get definitive answers on injuries from managers. if you were Bielsa would you rather moyes could plan for the game knowing bamford or raph were out? its happening more and more now where players are just suddenly not in match squads even though they were "on the training pitch" as Rafa told us DCL was. keeping it vague until the last minute suits them from a tactical standpoint. not great for FPL but we should be used to it by now.

9/10 will keep it vague, but Bielsa pretty much speaks the truth about the situation of his players tho, so he's an exception in that case.

yep but maybe he's changed because other than a rumour on twitter nobody knew about harrison for toon game and it appears Raphina was injured but risked.
