Scoutcast: Is it time to shift FPL funds from midfield to defence?

Joe and Andy help Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers prepare for Gameweek 6.

After a mixed bag of results from their defenders and midfielders last week, Joe and Andy are looking to make some minor changes to their teams.

Fortunately, they are still in good shape from a Wildcard only the week before, which should make further tweaks to their squads easier. Well, that’s the plan.

For Andy his risk-taking midfield, which includes rotation-prone Ferran Torres (£7.1m) of Manchester City and misfiring Wolves man Adama Traore (£6.0m), could do with an autumn clean-up. He reveals the midfielders in his thoughts to replace them.

Meanwhile, Joe feels his defence could do with an upgrade, especially with another Chelsea asset.

Armed with a raft of data, this week’s episode finds out who are the best Blues at the back to bring in.

One of Manchester City’s rearguard would also help Joe’s team, he believes, as he looks to navigate the new few Gameweeks.

The pair also give their latest thoughts on whether to get Romelu Lukaku (£11.6m), Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7m) or both.

Elsewhere, they are keen to see who is facing the top flight’s latest whipping boys, Newcastle, Leeds and Norwich, when they frisk the next four fixtures.

Joe and Andy bring in the live chat gang into discussion for their insightful advice, and there’s teams, differentials and captaincy decisions to reveal.

In addition, Joe and Andy catch up on the Scoutcast’s management of a veteran Fantasy manager’s team, who has had to dip out of this campaign for mental health reasons. With a top 100 finish last season, the pressure is truly on to maintain his strong record.

Seb was unable to attend this week’s edition after he became a dad this week. Many congratulations to the Scoutcast presenter and his family.

Marcelo Darwin Bielsa talking about evolution of his injured players. Guess we gotta wait till Friday pressers to find out what kind of evolution took place. Hope we get some good news.

At what point do his training methods start getting questioned? The injuries at Leeds must result from how their players are being asked to train and play.

I heard that they have to whack eachother in the shins with mallets until one person gives in. Whoever loses has to wash Bielsa’s car.

Feels like a bit of a fudge between the short term (Benrahma, Sarr) and the longer term (Dias, who has very poor immediate fixtures).

I guess that's the issue with WCing two weeks prior to the big fixture swings.

So Benny and Sarr are short term picks? Interesting take, I ave to admit I wasnt sure on Sarr myself anyway so I was thinking Sarr > Gray instead

it all comes down to how attacking Sissoko will be in those two games, I've only watched Watford highlights so have no idea - he wasn't meant to be a starter for me really but those two fixtures are nice

    GW7 WC draft

    Ramsdale

    TAA - Alonso - Rudiger

    Salah - Grealish - Raphinha - Bailey

    Lukaku - Antonio - Bamford

Nice balance, would need to see the bench but I wouldnt be rushing to get Grealish into your team and leaving Ronaldo out, he is fixture proof and will score 30 goals this season.

If WC you need Salah, Luk, Ron and TAA. Build the rest of the team around them. They are your 3 captains every week and your mega scoring DEF

Ok the Final WC team is done, I am going to try leave it be now!! 0.5m ITB to fund (Shaw --> Cancelo OR Sarr/Benr --> Raph).

    Begovic (just this week)
    Rudiger TAA Shaw
    Gallagher Gray Salah(c) Sarr Benrahma
    Ronaldo Lukaku

    Ramsdale Livra Duffy Scarlett

It has very little flexibility with a 3mium but this is as close as it gets.

Got to hope that the midfield can keep up but you've got the best options around that price so it'll probably work.

Good team, just think mid is too punty and you're already planning transfers. I'd do:

      Shaw > Alonso
      Gallagher > Raph

    Schmeichel

    Shaw - TAA - livramento

    Benrahama - Bruno - Smithrowe - Salah - Jota

Honestly I see nothing wrong with Dier and Schmeichel. Good assets and a good run of games. The only thing about them is they arent template. As for ayling and ESR I hear ya. I still have the wc and I think am willing to keep it that way unless bamford is ruled out. That would push me to wc a week early.

I would just do Bamford to Antonio if you do not have him.

Ings does not have a bad run from GW6 to 13 and he has only blanked once.

I think Digne will not. But anyway, still have to wait for pressers to determine. I removed Digne to avoid further price drop

        Possibly

Long term could be confused though by Eze coming back in just as Palace fixtures turn. That will likely push him back a bit. He could also lose set pieces to Olise.

Still a good option though and would back him to return consistently

I watched Wolves vs Brentford. He should have hauled. Don’t know what’s happening with Wolves tbh, they’ve been extremely unlucky

For a stop gap option, I dont mind having him or Sarr. Wouldnt bother if you are looking for a long term solution.

Next two fixtures, I think he will haul although he could as well be a trap.

I don’t fancy Sarr... Think he has been lucky. Doesn’t pass my eye test. Norwich was an easy fixture

NEW are probably shambolic of same level and Leeds arent looking good, so I hope Sarr can get something out of those games, can move him out after that.

Yes Sarr could do well too. I’m a but stubborn because I still think Wolves are better than Watford.

I see Traoré bulldozing is way through Southampton’s defence this weekend, something City lacked & he has Newcastle at home next too. Wolves would work on their attack imo

Might just go against the crowd & get punished or swing my balls out & have a good laugh 🙂

he will bulldoze his way through, yes. But i am looking at his 'decent stats', all i see are big zeros in the goal and assist columns.
The guy can't hit a barn door. I'd rather someone with a fraction of his chances but a great finisher.

There are two main ways to play FPL.

      1. You have set and forget big hitters and then you rotate the cheap assets.
      2. You have set and forget cheap value picks and then you rotate the big hitters.

I always used to be a 1 player but I've been looking to change to become 2. More impact with the transfers.

If I were to go with a 1 strategy, I suppose I'd set and forget Ronaldo.

Chelsea will keep more clean sheets than Man U, and they'll keep each one as a team

This makes them a better team, because they balance defence well with attack, especially when facing other good teams. This also means they'll create fewer goal scoring opportunities than a team that doesn't focus so much on defending, even in the tough games: Man U

Where Lukaku would usually make this up is with assists. But his problem atm is that he doesn't have a potent goalscorer as a regular strike partner or on either wing. So he's down to goals and fewer assists than his excellent positioning should provide

This notches CR7 ahead by one rung, imo. It's slight. But it's there

In the tough game, easy game, average game: it's still all balls to CR7, the predator in the box. Outscore the opponent

    C. save WC for later

    TAA Shaw Reguilon* White Tsimikas

Gray or Townsend - the way Townsend easily sent Digne away from a free-kick vs Villa makes me think it would be him taking charge

Only marginal difficulty is the pecking order there once DCL is back.

12th Man will be more informed but I had thought that he was fighting Iwobi for one spot.

Do like him though if he does get regular starts. Even at Palace - before last season which was ran odd all round there - he was a regular 120-130 pointer.

hard to know for sure, there might be a pattern but no idea yet - Rudiger most nailed and then probably Azpi based on being able to play in two positions
