Early Gameweek 6 team news: Injury updates on Digne, Bamford and Firmino

The third round of the EFL Cup got underway on Tuesday evening and there were a number of key injury updates to note for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers ahead of Gameweek 6.

We’ll have our usual round-up of pre-match Premier League press conferences on Thursday and Friday but in the meantime, here’s what we have heard from managers up and down the country over the last 24 hours or so.

For a list of all the current fitness concerns affecting top-flight clubs, visit our Injuries and Bans tab.

PATRICK BAMFORD, LUKE AYLING

Patrick Bamford (£8.0m), Luke Ayling (£4.5m) and Raphinha (£6.5m) all picked up injuries or exacerbated existing problems in Gameweek 6 and missed out on Leeds United’s EFL Cup tie against Fulham on Tuesday.

“Bamford has an injury in his ankle and Ayling in his knee. [Their availability against West Ham] is subject to the evolution that they have.” – Marcelo Bielsa

There was no further word from the Leeds boss on Raphinha’s hip problem, however.

LUCAS DIGNE

Lucas Digne (£5.4m) and Andre Gomes (£4.9m) were both substituted with calf injuries on Tuesday night but Everton boss Rafael Benitez doesn’t seem too concerned about either player and suggested the withdrawals were of a more precautionary nature.

“A little problem with the calf, both. So we will see. I don’t expect they will be serious but, just in case, I think it was much better to be cautious with that.” – Rafael Benitez

Everton, of course, are set to be without the injured Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.1m), Seamus Coleman (£5.0m), Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) and Richarlison (£7.5m) for Gameweek 6 at the very least.

ROBERTO FIRMINO

Roberto Firmino (£8.8m) isn’t a well-owned FPL asset but his fitness status very much impacts the appeal and pitch-time of a more popular player, positional rival Diogo Jota (£7.7m).

The Brazilian is now back in training, although it remains to be seen if he is ready for the clash with Brentford after a month on the sidelines.

“Bobby [Firmino] trained yesterday, the first time, parts with the team, so it is not too far away when he will play again.” – Jurgen Klopp, speaking on Tuesday night

Naby Keita (£5.0m) was withdrawn in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Norwich on Tuesday, meanwhile, but Jurgen Klopp isn’t unduly worried about his midfielder.

EMILE SMITH ROWE/KIERAN TIERNEY

Both Emile Smith Rowe (£5.3m) and Kieran Tierney (£4.9m) seemed to be in discomfort when they left the field in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Burnley, with Mikel Arteta confirming the latter had been “cramping up”.

Neither player was listed in Arsenal’s medical bulletin on Tuesday, however, so it doesn’t appear as if either issue has amounted to anything.

We may get a clearer picture of this when the Gunners face Wimbledon on Wednesday.

EDOUARD MENDY

Edouard Mendy (£6.0m) faces a “race against time” to shake off a hip problem and be fit for Chelsea’s clash with Manchester City, according to his manager.

“Mendy cannot play [in the EFL Cup]. He has not been in training so far so we will try to do everything for Saturday, to reintegrate him tomorrow for individual training and hopefully Thursday’s team training, but not yet.

“I think Saturday is possible but it’s a race against pain and a race against time. So let’s see. I hope he will be back in team training on Thursday and if this goes well he can be ready for Saturday, but I don’t know right now.” – Thomas Tuchel

TARIQ LAMPTEY/YVES BISSOUMA

The 17.3%-owned Yves Bissouma (£4.6m) is a slight concern for next Monday’s M23 derby, while Tariq Lamptey (£4.4m) – who was on the bench in Gameweek 5 – should see pitch-time in Wednesday’s EFL Cup tie against Swansea.

“Yves [Bissouma] is recovering quite well, we’re hopeful that he will train at the back end of the week… and play against Crystal Palace.”

“[Tariq Lamptey] is in the squad, he will be in the 18 so there’s a good chance [he will face Swansea].” – Graham Potter

Potter went on to express caution about Lamptey’s playing comeback.

INJURY ROUND-UP

Marcus Rashford (£9.4m) isn’t likely to return until after the October international break but Alex Telles (£5.0m) and the lesser-spotted Phil Jones (unpriced) will be involved in Manchester United’s EFL Cup tie against West Ham on Wednesday night.

Lucas Moura (£6.5m) and Steven Bergwijn (£6.0m) will both miss Tottenham Hotspur’s trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers in midweek, meanwhile, with Nuno Espirito Santo characteristically uncertain over whether either player would feature in Gameweek 6.

Bench fodder favourite Josh Brownhill (£4.5m) has “got a chance” of featuring in Gameweek 6 despite a dead leg but ever-present Saints stopper Jack Stephens (£4.5m) will miss the next 10-12 weeks with a knee injury he picked up in the 0-0 with Manchester City on Saturday.

Ilkay Gundogan (£7.3m) also appears to have suffered an issue in that stalemate, as he joined a quartet of previously missing players on the sidelines for City’s 6-1 win over Wycombe on Tuesday.

Pep Guardiola commented on Phil Foden (£7.9m) and Kevin De Bruyne‘s (£11.9m) fitness after that midweek thrashing:

“Phil was injured for two months after the national team. Phil doesn’t need many games to get his rhythm because he lives for football 24 hours a day. He is sharp.

“Kevin needs time for a proper pre-season. He was injured in the Champions League final and for the national team. He needs his rhythm to be fit. That’s why it was so good for him to play 90 minutes today. Knowing he is not in the right condition. Now is the moment for Kevin to start to be ready.” – Pep Guardiola

wonder if they are counting Silva vs Liverpool, for example - he was on the bench and came on, but think that's because he returned late?

would like to see the cameo appearances too, pretty sure Silva has hardly any

Sorry to be that guy but I'm not sure this should be a hot topic when we don't know any assumptions this guy made.

      How is he determining available?

Its misleading data unless you're looking at fully fit and available.

I don't expect the results would be much different but the % might be closer. But we knew the overall result anyway.

In a similar position and I'm thinking just Ings to Antonio. If Torres doesn't play then Veltman can come in, potential clean sheet there imo. I'm probably more hit adverse than the average fpl player though.

I don't mind the odd hit, but not as big a fan if I'll be wildcarding soon. Also, just brought Torres in recently and would feel foolish shipping him out so soon even if it's the right thing to do

Yeah same. Brought in Torres for the blank and swapping him straight out feels hasty when I'm going to WC 7 or 8. Starting this week with Toney and Torres is bleak though ngl. Realistically they're probably getting 3 points combined. Ugh maybe take the hit lol.

I personally think Bamford will start, as will Trent even though they're both flagged.. I've already used my FT to do Traore > Gray, any suggestions here do I need to take a -4 to ship Torres to someone else or leave?

Hahah nah nothing to do with that, Bamford played the remainder of the match after picking up his injury so I doubt it's incredibly serious, he's been pictured at a charity event walking on it, not strapped up or anything so he's probably just had a rest last night in the Carabao Cup.

Trent was just unwell? Not Covid related so doesn't have to isolate or anything, would assume he would be okay after a week, but maybe not.. I'm still confident!

He starts but does he finish? The minutes toward the back end of last season read like this

          28 - 34 minutes
          29 - 76
          30 - 64
          31- 44
          32 - 90
          33 -90
          34 - 58
          35 - 78
          36 - 57
          37 - 90
          38 -45

Not a pretty picture. Also worth noting that he played injured in 29 (when he hauled)

      Torres for Benrahma
      Or Torres for Gallagher

Both are very taking midfielders and guaranteed good minutes.

Im just wondering why you have played your FT so early, is it to beat the price rise for Gray? Seems a bit gung-ho, if u don’t mind me saying so, in the light of your players potentially getting injured during the League Cup games

I’m interested in Grealish. He seems pretty settled in the City team, and with KDB back I’d like to see what his role is.
8.0m could be good value for a City mid playing every game just about.

Still seem to be teething issues with the attack at Chelsea since Lukaku arrived - not sure Havertz is part of the answer so I’d steer clear of him till me know more.

I’m hopeful of wanting Grealish from gw8 onwards.

Ron vs Antonio or both is eating me up

    a) Toney -> Antonio + 1m - means most likely have to play WC GW7
    b) Toney + Bruno -> Ronaldo + Sarr + 2m (-4) - can hold off WC till GW8
    c) Toney + Bruno + Scarlatt -> Ronaldo + Antonio + 4.6mid (-8) YOLO

    Dennis Ronaldo Antonio

    Steele Torres White Livra

I think people are going to be annoyed when they get the likes of Rudiger over Azpi/Alonso, despite the nailedness.

I may very well be wrong here and only time will tell, but people are fickle with bonus/attacking returns.

Alonso 50% of matches will most likely outscored Rudiger 75% of matches.

Hi people. I would appreciate any thoughts.
The question is, would it be unreasonable to ship out Bamford for Antonio when I just did the opposite before last week. I had him since the beginning and I sold him for 7.7. If I buy him back, it's a straight lost of 0.2. On the other hand, if Bamford is injured and unavailable for Saturday, then it's gets itchy.
I really don't wont to sit and watch Antonio having fun against the decimated Leeds. Hell, he can haul a double digit score if Leeds play their usual Kamikaze-like style of going forward and playing with a high press for all 90 minutes.
What do you think, is it worth it to get Antonio straight back in if Bamford is injured?

If Bamford is injured, and you don't bring him in, what else would you do? Have a sub come in or still trade? That will answer your question

      1. DIMITRIS
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 6 months ago

On the bench are the likes of Sissoko, Livramento and Williams. I guess they all score a 2 pointer unless something extraordinary happens. I regret getting rid of Antonio, but I chased the upside of Bamford hauling against Newcastle. It didn't play out well for me.
I'm leaning towards getting Antonio back in.

It’s hard but you should ignore last week and do what you think is best this week and going forward.

A free transfer to move Bamford to Antonio makes sense to me. Injury or not.

Cheers! Thanks for answering. I know I'll lose 0.2 but the transfer makes so much sense if Bam is injured or even if he's fit. I made the mistake last week while chasing the upside with Bam against New. It seems that I'll have to pay 0.2 for that mistake sadly.

I did the same & it hurts.

I’m taking the 0.2 hit and bringing Antonio back into the fold...too dangerous to be w/o him for the Leeds game imo.

with the sudden interest in City options, are people forgetting Gundo? He seems as likely as any of the mids (maybe outside KDB and Grealish) to hold position, and has dropped tastily in price. Yeah he hasn't done much yet, but we know he can.

I think he's injured. Nonetheless I don't think it's smart to get City options before this : CHE, PSG, LIV . Perhaps wait for GW8 and then re-asses. Plus, if anyone get's injured on international break than you'll have a clearer picture of who to get. Cheers!

Pls can you help me with my G5 team below, where l used my WC & have 0.0 itb.

I was frustrated to only get 44 pts, esp as I thought I’d easily double this. Life of a FPL player heh.

Everything that cud have gone wrong did, eg TAA & James didn’t play, Jota blanked again, Marçal gave away a pen, at the last min l switched my 1st bench sub from Livra to Williams & l captained Lukaku ( thinking he’d get a big haul). Thk in hindsight l was too greedy having CR7 & Rom # amateur !!

Any useful suggestions where can l improve my team.

    My GW 5 team:

    Sanchez
    TAA - James - Livra
    Salah (V) - Raph - Gray - Benrahma - Gallagher
    Lukaku (C) - Ronaldo-

Steer Marçal - Williams - Scarlett
    0.0 itb

    Options are:

    (A) Take out Lukaku, Scarlett & Jota for Dennis, Antonio & Benrahma = -8 pts

    (B) Take out Lukaku for Antonio only = w/o taking a pts hit

    (C) Take out Lukaku & Jota for Antonio & Benrahma = -4 pts

    (D) Do nothing ..(.but I’m aware that the Hammers take on Leeds this GW)

    Or any other suggestions.

    Thx

Yes l captained Lukaku (C) for GW 5

This week I’ll most probably captain CR7.

          Thank you for your thoughts.

Seems too tempting though not to bring in ANTONIO and BENRAHMA.

      Nope.
CR7’s got a weakened EVE at home and then a defensively weak and underperforming LEICESTER away.

Possibility of transferring him out for LUKAKU in GW9 onwards, when he faces LIV, tot & MCI.

IN GW 9 & 10 LUKAKU faces NORWICH at home and then NEWCASTLE away, which are far too good to ignore, esp. as you can only captain 1 at a time
