FPL Hall of Fame: Tips and strategy from nine-time 10k finisher Finn Sollie

We hear from nine-time top 10k finisher Finn Sollie as we continue to champion those in our Hall of Fame roll of honour.

Here at Fantasy Football Scout, we are acknowledging the best of the best when it comes to Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

And so, every year, we will salute the top five managers in our prestigious Career Hall of Fame.

The managers who can break into the top five will be immortalised on our Hall of Fame page.

You can check your own position in the Hall of Fame by becoming a Fantasy Football Scout Member and joining either of our two FPL mini-leagues.

Our Live Hall of Fame, which is updated throughout the season, had its first refresh for 2021/22 over the September international break and you’ll be able to see all the correct new IDs attached to the managers in question.

Having previously heard from Hall of Fame number one Fábio Borges, we ask a few questions of Finn, who is third in the standings after an exceptional overall rank of 39th in 2021/22.

Hall of Fame Career #1-#5 2
HOW DO YOU GENERALLY APPROACH FPL? WHAT IS YOUR MAIN STRATEGY/STYLE?

Finn: I mainly play relatively boring/template FPL and try to avoid punts and unproven players.

I’ll try to watch quite a few games each week to scout potential transfers, but I’ll also listen to several stats-based podcasts and follow Twitter accounts that share a lot of useful and interesting information/statistics that influence my decision-making process.

I don’t plan too far ahead and will generally just try to transfer in good players who have relatively strong fixtures and who I think will get strong returns in the next 5-10 Gameweeks, and then adapt to injuries/suspensions/formational changes/’form’ after each Gameweek.

I don’t aim to take too many hits during a season, but I will probably take a few at the start to increase team value and correct my initial mistakes. Later, I will probably not be taking too many if I don’t have to due to injuries/suspensions.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST FPL MOMENT?

Finn: I don’t really have any single moments/Gameweeks that stand out, but finishing 39th last season was good!

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR SECURING A GOOD FINISH?

Finn: Buy players that you think will perform well over the next 5-10 Gameweeks, and be patient even if they don’t perform straight away.

Listen to content providers (podcast/Twitter) who do a lot of research and have some good historical finishes. They will save you a lot of time, and make sure that you have all the relevant information you need to make good decisions (stats/press conferences/fixture swings etc).

Don’t try to be smarter than everyone else. The template is popular for a reason.

Don’t take hits every week: around 10-12 hits per season should be more than enough.

WHAT STATS DO YOU PAY MOST ATTENTION TO? WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TOOL IN THE PREMIUM MEMBERS AREA?

Finn: I don’t really have a “go-to” stat, but obviously expected goals (xG) and expected assists (xA) will be important for attacking players, and expected goals conceded (xGC) when considering defences.

I do like to look at heatmaps, attempted shots/assists, and I pay attention to touches in the final third and the opposition’s penalty area.

In the Premium Members Area, I like to use the comparison tool when in doubt about a transfer decision, and I’ll probably look at more or less all the stats available when using this tool.

0.5 ITB for Marcal to Christensen in GW7 to give me a Chelsea triple up for The Run:

    Sanchez
    TAA Rudiger Marcal Livra
    Salah Raph Gallagher
    Ronaldo Lukaku Antonio

    Steele White Gilmour Mendy

    A) Is it set up ok with White on the bench? SC odds rate Arsenal better than Chelsea this week.
    B) Captain Ronaldo the right call?

In regards to 1. I like you have both Livra and white as well as a wolves defender. Wondering what swayed you toward starting Livra and Marcal and benching White? I currently have Livra and Semedo starting but not sure if it’ll be a better idea to bench Livra for White

There is a recent history of Spurs scoring well in NLD. I am an Arsenal supporter and I know we will concede. Livra plays a Wolves team that is finding it tough to score. The recent defensive performances of Southampton have been good. Livra also has better attacking potential than White.

Plan is to do a Gilmour/ White/ Livra rotation based on fixtures. I think at 4.5/ 4.4/ 4.0 they are great options. I would have to compromise elsewhere to upgrade any one of them which I am not willing to do.

You have the luxury of Torres on your bench!

In all honesty, I'd either ship out Torres and Digne and get a Chelsea defender and a different mid of your choice, or just hold.

If it was my team I would want a Chelsea defender and with no money in the bank I don't think you can get any apart from Christensen in one move hence why I'd either do it in two or not really bother.

I know not to look into it too much, but I’m surprised to see Ronaldo leading by so much in the captaincy poll. I expected it to be a little closer between him and Salah or even Antonio to get some more votes.

Yes granted, I don’t think Ronaldo is a bad pick, and I do think he should do well this week, I may even captain him. Just didn’t think I’d see the day that people would go against Salah against a promoted side. I guess maybe Brentford have done well so far though, but the extra point for a goal and CS is nice for Salah

There is a bit of recency bias in that Brentford looked very solid last week in defence.

Liverpool attacking returns can still be spread between Mané, Jota or Salah. United just seem to funnel all their attacks through Ronaldo now.

    2. Nomar

Ronnie is pretty much a perma cap. Fixture proof and will be main focal point in a free scoring team.

Brentford look like they are capable of frustrating Liverpool long enough to make the game close. United at home pretty much going to steamroller most clubs outside of the top 6.

I'm capping Ronny this week and not sure right now I'm going to sell him even when fixtures change. He's FPL gold and platinum rolled into one happy bundle of SIU'iness

How is United considered free-scoring? How many have they scored in their last 3 games? Compare that to Liverpool

I agree, even with Brentford's impressive defensive stats I figured a lot would still go for Salah, and a lot talked up Antonio last week but seems like most feel it's too risky.

    4. Cok3y5murf
      • 7 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

I think it's just because he's at home. If Salah was at home to Brentford, this would be a different-looking poll.

The home-away goal difference was high in the first 2 gameweeks but has evened out since. So it's not that big a factor now. Fixture wise, Antonio is clear

Jota has been a massive disappointment since I brought him in. I'm thinking he gets moved on new GW when they play MCI.

Who should be on my watch list as a mid-priced midfielder?

There doesn't seem to be any that are sticking out right now. Think it might be better to drop down and move the money into defense.

i'd just be weary, i feel you need a 7.5-8.5m price point in your team and Jota might be a hold until he becomes a problem. stat wise he is still good. Its team specific, if your on 3 premium then its less appealing to keep jota's price point.

      Jota will haul soon

Arsenal fans!! Is Ramsdale nailed? Is there a reason why Leno hasnt played? I dont rate Ramsdale at all so it amazes me a bit

Arteta inferred he picked him to counter the balls in the box from Burnley. Leno could be back in soon. It’s a risk for me.

We didn't spend £25m on a backup, I think it's just surprising how quickly he's seemingly overtaken Leno as number 1. I was hugely sceptical of the move but he's been excellent so far (small sample size), distribution, communication much better than Leno. Couple with the fact that Leno played with the b team last night seemingly points to Ramsdale being no.1.

All that said...Arteta did make some strange comments a couple of weeks ago about Leno just needing a break. I would be very surprised if he came back in on Sunday but I wouldn't rule it out completely. So if you do go with him make sure you have a playing no.2, or just stay away for a few more weeks until it's totally clear.

Sorry FFS but this is possibly the dullest article I’ve probably ever read.
    “What’s your strategy?”
“I don’t really have one. Just buy players you think will do well.”
I’m sure Finn is a great player of the game but there really isn’t a great deal of insight in that article.

    Two quick questions:

    A. Play Sanchez or Begovic?
    B. Play one of White, Livramento and Semedo

    Thanks!

Man going Torres Traore Jota and Greenwood on a 'loaded' MD with Salah on my WC has not paid off over the last 2 GWs.

The fact that the other options in that price range Benrahma Sarr Raphinha & Gray all have hit pretty decent scores makes it worse.

Anyway Torres out the gap, hoping for something from the other 3. Fine lines this FPL is.

Bielsa presser today so wait for that. Although Leeds can't defend so I'd be shipping regardless.

    Torres > Raph this week?

Have Bamford but are we assuming he will play?

      Depends on severity.

Could bench, could take a hit for Lukaku
