Jimenez ends goal drought as Arsenal claim convincing north London derby win

We begin our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 6 Scout Notes with analysis of Arsenal v Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton v Wolverhampton Wanderers.

For a summary of all seven of Saturday’s games, click here.

ARSENAL 3-1 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

  • Goals: Emile Smith Rowe (£5.3m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.9m), Bukayo Saka (£6.2m) | Son Heung-min (£10.0m)
  • Assists: Saka, Smith Rowe | Sergio Reguilon (£5.2m)
  • Bonus points: Saka x3, Smith Rowe x2, Aubameyang x1

ARSENAL ATTACK THRIVES

In a sensational first-half performance by Arsenal, Mikel Arteta’s side scored three goals with the impressive Emile Smith Rowe (£5.3m) and Bukayo Saka (£6.2m) causing Tottenham’s defence all sorts of problems.

The duo linked up well for the opener, and ended the game as the Gunners’ expected goal involvement (xGI) leaders, with 0.54 and 0.91 totals respectively.

Emile Smith Rowe (left) and Bukayo Saka’s (right) touch heatmaps v Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 6

With fixtures now easing for Arsenal (see below), the pair could become cheap options for our midfield set-ups, though it does perhaps feel like Saka’s spot in the starting XI is a little more secure, given that Smith Rowe only made the bench against Norwich City as recently as Gameweek 4, and was then replaced just after the hour mark the following week.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.9m) deserves a mention, too, having netted his second goal in three appearances.

Admittedly, it’s hard to find a place for the Gabon international in our frontlines right now, but it is worth noting that amongst all forwards, only Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7m) has accumulated more shots since Gameweek 4.

VALUE OPTIONS EMERGE AT THE BACK

Xhaka and Moura recalled as Ramsdale starts again

Another start for Aaron Ramsdale (£4.5m) means that he has now featured from the off in three consecutive Premier League games, conceding just one goal during that time.

As a result, he’s emerged as a value option in goal, who could realistically rival the likes of Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) and David Raya (£4.6m) for FPL points in the coming weeks.

At the back, Ben White (£4.4m) is a slightly cheaper alternative, but Kieran Tierney (£4.9m) remains the headline pick if your budget can stretch to it. The Scottish international was slightly more subdued in an attacking sense today, but has posted team-league totals for successful crosses and touches in the opponent’s half across the opening six matches.

Defensively, the Gunners have conceded just two big chances against Norwich City (h), Burnley (a) and Tottenham Hotspur (h), though the quality of opposition should of course be considered.

PROBLEMS AT SPURS

As a result of today’s loss, Spurs’ have now conceded nine goals in their last three Premier League games, while at the other end, they’ve scored just four all season.

The underlying numbers remain a real concern, too.

TotalRank v other Premier League sides

Shots conceded6718th
xG5.3819th
xGC10.9416th

Son Heung-min (£10.0m) was at least able to score a consolation goal today, which means that he has now netted three in five league appearances this term. However, given the above numbers, it’s hard to get too excited about any of their assets, despite a couple of reasonable looking fixtures – Aston Villa (h) and Newcastle United (a) – up next.

“We were not good enough and Arsenal did a good game. It’s always hard when you concede early in a game and we were not able to control the match. We didn’t start well and the first half was very bad.

Against Chelsea we played well in the first half, but today was the other way around. We were not able to execute it [game-plan] in the right way.

Credit to Arsenal because they were strong, aggressive and stronger. What I focus on is making the right decisions. We learn in every moment. We are trying to build. There are a lot of things wrong and there are a lot of things good.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tierney, Partey, Xhaka (Sambi Lokonga 82), Saka (Maitland-Niels 87), Odegaard, Smith Rowe (Tavares 88), Aubameyang

Spurs XI: Lloris, Tanganga (Royal 45), Sanchez, Dier, Reguilon, Hojbjerg, Alli (Skipp 45), Ndombele (Gil 70), Moura, Son, Kane

SOUTHAMPTON 0-1 WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS

  • Goals: Raul Jimenez (£7.5m)
  • Assists: Jose Sa (£5.0m)
  • Bonus points: Sa x3, Jimenez x2, Romain Saiss (£5.0m) x1

JIMENEZ ENDS LONG WAIT FOR GOAL

After 14 goal attempts without scoring before today’s game, Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) finally opened his account for the season and bagged his patient owners eight FPL points.

The Mexican had played every minute of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign since returning from the serious injury he sustained in November 2020, but was yet to find the back of the net.

However, that changed today, as he latched onto an excellent goal kick from Jose Sa (£5.0m) in the second-half, before coolly slotting the ball past Alex McCarthy (£4.5m).

Raul Jimenez’s xG shot map 2021/22

“I want to score every game, I knew the goal was coming, I was fighting for it, working for it and all the team deserve it. I was thinking ‘when will the goal come?’. It felt really good. Four of our five games have been incredible, we need to keep going like this. We did a really good job. The fans are always with us, supporting. It is really important for our team, to have them supporting and shouting.” – Raul Jimenez

SA SHINES

The biggest score of the day, however, was reserved for keeper Sa, who kept a clean sheet and made six saves, and as a result collected maximum bonus on his way to a huge 14-point haul for his small army of owners.

The Portuguese stopper has now kept back-to-back away clean sheets, and sits level in fourth with Edouard Mendy (£6.0m) in the goalkeeper standings, on 28 points.

At the back, it was another encouraging performance by Nelson Semedo (£4.9m), who forced McCarthy into an early save and rewarded his owners with a clean sheet.

TRAORE AND TRINCAO DROPPED

Brighton Burnley 5

Bruno Lage lined Wolves’ up in their usual 3-4-2-1 formation today, but switched personnel in the attacking midfield roles.

In response to their 2-0 loss at home to Brentford in Gameweek 5, Adama Traore (£6.0m) and Francisco Trincao (£5.9m) dropped out, with new signing Hee-chan Hwang (£5.5m) and Daniel Podence (£5.5m) coming into the starting XI.

Traore was finally introduced on 71 minutes, but touched the ball just eight times and failed to make an impact, while Trincao remained an unused substitute.

SOUTHAMPTON STRUGGLE, BUT LIVRAMENTO IMPRESSES AGAIN

Ahead of their Gameweek 8 fixture swing, Southampton failed to impress in their audition, though the performance of Tino Livramento (£4.2m) again stood out as he put in a lively display from the right of Ralph Hasenhüttl’s 4-2-2-2 formation.

The youngster ended the game with more final-third touches than any other player on the pitch (35), while he also created a couple of chances.

Tino Livramento’s touch heatmap v Wolverhampton Wanderers in Gameweek 6

Further forward, the Saints had their chances – registering 18 shots to Wolves’ five – but were unable to find the net for a third successive Premier League game, and lacked any real quality in the final-third.

As a result of the loss, it’s now six games without a win, as they remain one of five different Premier League teams (Norwich City, Burnley, Leeds United, Newcastle United) yet to register three points this season.

Southampton XI: McCarthy, Livramento, Bednarek, Salisu, Walker-Peters (Long 74), Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Elyounoussi, Redmond (Djenepo 64), A Armstrong, Adams (Broja 64)

Wolves XI: Sa, Kilman, Coady, Saiss, Semedo (Hoever 87), Moutinho, Dendoncker, Marcal, Hwang (Neves 88), Podence (Traore), Jimenez

Controversial based upon the numerous posts above but I'd say yes.

Captain option for the next 5 fixtures which are considerably better than Ronaldo s.

Possible recency bias after the City fixture this weekend influencing people?

I think Lukaku will be a popular Captain option over the next 5, so not owning & captaining could be a real rank killer.

Ronaldo historically is a flat track bully, so I'd expect Lukaku to outscore him over the next 5 by more than 4 points especially as a Captain.

I get Everton at home could be good for Ronaldo, but he blanked against Villa at home, so you could get the 4 points back in the first GW.

Forgot to add the price difference between Ronaldo & Lukaku has to be factored in. £0.9 to upgrade elsewhere could be significant.

Current WC draft. Pretty happy with the balance, only real question is whether Gallagher/Gray are better options than Benrahma at this point?

    Ramsdale Foster
    TAA Cancelo Alonso Rudiger Liv
    Salah Raph Sarr Benrahma ESR
    Lukaku Antonio Toney

Very similar to mine. Not a big fan of Toney, and double West Ham attack is a bit risky with their european commitment. Also not sold on ESR, but I guess you have the bench to cover if he doesnt start.

Looking good, could be benching headaches at times. I have a fairly similar setup on my WC, below. Tempted by Saka/ESR over Benrahma

      Ramsdale
      TAA | Alonso | Rudiger
      Salah | Raphinha | Sarr | Benrahma
      Lukaku | Antonio | Jimenez

I think you've got too much benching headache there. I'd suggest downgrading Benny to a 4.5 and move ESR to Saka - both looked good yesterday, but Saka looked better. Don't think you need the WHM double-up with Antonio. Even then you're going to want to play 4 def most weeks so someone will miss out.

    Sanchez (Foster)
    TAA Rudiger White Marcal (Livramento)
    Salah Jota Greenwood Benrahma (Brownhill)
    Lukaku Bamford Antonio

Already used my 2 FTs to bring in Lukaku/Rudiger from CR7/Amartey. Hopefully Bamford will be ok to play but can survive if he isn't this week.

Do you think I should wildcard next week? I feel like the team looks good. Only popular picks missing are Sarr and Raphina, but can just bring one of them in next week for Jota or Greenwood

Current WC draft, appreciate any advice and comment.

    Ramsdale Foster

    Trent Alonso Semedo Cancelo Livramento
Salah Raphinha Sarr Brownhill Douglas Luiz
    Auba Lukaku Antonio

Debating between Auba/Vardy, but both can be easily downgraded to DCL/Bamford once they're fit, or to Jimenez if he shows consistent return.
Midfield is a bit light but I am not a big fan of budget mf anyways. Could make a case for a Rudiger+Alonso double chelsea defence, but the 4 fullbacks at the back seem very attacking for me, not sure which one to drop for Rudiger and I am not a big fan of going 5 at the back.

    Thoughts??

I like that side a lot, would be somewhat similar to my WC team if I was to use it this week. Not very much between Auba and Vardy, I think Vardy better for long term but Auba may have slightly better fixtures to target now until one of the strikers you mentioned return to form and you look to make that switch, it may be well worth going with the Chelsea double up but I would keep Semedo this week because of the fixture and possible cash in bank to look to make the switch after the IB if needed

Slight double rotation risk of Alonso & Cancelo with Zinchenko back fit, but nice team mate.

Is Ramsdale 100% nailed? Foster definitely keeping his place? They both could be, I genuinely don't know. Just thought I'd highlight it mate.

    Are these transfer worth -4?

    Out: James, Jota & Bamford
    In: Rudi/Azpi, Saka & Jimenez

Frees up cash for Semedo ➡️ Cancelo in GW8 also.

If Bamford is fit will keep him or I could start Gray (mun) this week and bench Bamford but I'd want confirmation he's definitely back for GW8.

I'd say presuming Bamford is out then it's a good move to make, especially with the look toward Cancelo as well. Only thing I don't like is Jimenez who I am no wholly convinced by at the moment but seems it's slim pickings in that price range, also should Saka be nailed on? I remember last season he was rotated every so often but still he ticked along nicely so don't mind that move

      1. Karan14
        • 8 Years

Saka is pretty nailed on according to all Arsenal fans and looking at his mins recently. Last year he was rotated because of Europa.

Even if Bamford is not out I can get Cancelo because of those transfers.

In that case then yes I like that with Rudiger, I normally don't like Arsenal attackers but seems Saka may have gotten back into his groove and hard to say not at that price

Would like to but seems Grealish and Jesus are getting the most minutes for City at the moment in attack and the extra money could pave the way for another City/Chelsea defender. Although you're right Vardy is a great pick and won't mean rotation headaches

Age, CL, called up for Brazil & Christensen are all potential factors against Silva. Also carrying a knock prior to City game & that was the reason he was benched.

      Rudiger the most nailed.

Christensen "could" be nailed with Silva going to Brazil, James ankle injury, Azpi pushed to RWB but yet TBC.

Lack of creative mid really hampers lukakus output. I thought Tuckel is an attacking coach. Why does he have to field 5 defenders than again 3 cm/cdms. Just play havertz/ziyech regularly and save the headache of us

Guessing you didn't see the Louis van Gaal interview referring to Chelsea playing 3 at the back. He basically told the journalist he knows nothing about football & it isn't a defensive system.

3,5,2 used second half versus Spurs created plenty of chances.

City were excellent & looking at the next 5 fixtures I'm not sure we'll play with the extra MF & will revert back to 3,4,2,1 anyway.

Jota owners FYI Firmino did NOT get called up for Brazil. Apologies if old news, but thought I'd highlight it in case the motivation to keep him is because you think he's nailed for GW 8.

With Firmino back fit & City next up & assuming Jota goes on international duty with Brazil & then Man U away GW 9 I'm not sure he gets many points over the next 3 fixtures.

With all the MF options at a lower price point enabling you to upgrade elsewhere, he looks like an easy sell to me.

see who starts mid week at Porto, I think it will be Jota … with Firmino coming in on the weekend because he is more of a hard worker to close down the City attacking full back … personally I will sell Jota this week and get in Saka or Sarr before WC over the IB

    4. Carefree Crew
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

I've already sold Jota & Bamford to Lukaku & Luiz (Villa) for a hit so I'd say yes.
Obviously depends on your team & who you bring in, but over the next 3 games & likely resting / sub appearances of Jota & the opposition he's facing, I'd suggest you would get those 4 points back & if you went for someone cheaper than Jota, the extra funds would enable you to upgrade someone else next week.

    5. Carefree Crew

I agree with hot dogs for tea, historically Klopp starts Firmino against the top teams so City & Man U doesn't suggest Jota starts & the easier fixture is after the International break where Firmino had had a 2 week rest.

It's bordering on a no brainer for me.

Would you WC this or wait a week? Annoying to take Torres and Shaw price drops.

    Sanchez* - Steele
    TAA - Shaw* - White - Ayling* - Livramento
    Salah - Jota* - Torres* - Benrahma - Greenwood*
    Ronaldo - Antonio - Scarlett

Have FT, probably transferring Torres or Shaw out.

Team value dropping like a brick. I want Lukaku, Rudiger & Livramento for the next run. Would you roll FT?

Why wait on Digne / Shaw to Rudiger this week instead of rolling?

Ronaldo to Lukaku is another option.

Personally I'd use it this week, it's free, you know who you want.

Both Chelsea players likely to rise before next week so if team value is an issue I think it makes sense to do one this week.

I'd get a city defender, but you could wait a couple of weeks as well.

Walker at 5.5m looks decent value. He looks fairly nailed on at the moment too. Worth going for over Dias?

I'm looking at defense combinations on WC:
    Dias + ESR
    Walker + Saka

I think Walker + Saka is marginally better. Not sure ESR is as nailed as Saka.

Yeah it is hard to know for sure. I went with ESR due to the price difference compared to Saka. I wouldn't necessarily assume Saka is completely nailed as Pepe could potentially feature.

I think Cancelo could make anyone avoiding him really regret it from GW8 onwards - he is first port of call in the city defence (probably first port of call out of all defenders in the game bar Trent)

If going for a double up then yeah there might be a conversation to be had there around Dias vs. Walker...

But not many will double up with Trent around & Chelsea's fixture run
