What Solskjaer said about United’s penalty situation and Shaw/Maguire injuries

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 6 Scout Notes with analysis of Manchester United v Aston Villa.

MANCHESTER UNITED 0-1 ASTON VILLA

  • Goal: Kortney Hause (£4.4m)
  • Assist: Douglas Luiz (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Hause x3, Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m) x2, Tyrone Mings (£5.0m) x1, Luiz x1, Harry Maguire (£5.4m) x1

WHO IS ON PENALTIES AT UNITED?

FPL Gameweek 6 round-up: Saturday review, injuries and lessons learned

Bruno Fernandes (£11.9m) skied a stoppage-time penalty as Ronaldo watched on in Manchester United’s defeat to Aston Villa.

Naturally, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was plagued with questions on spot-kicks in his post-match press conference and didn’t give us a completely clear-cut answer on who will take them in future, although comments that Fernandes would “step forward again” could be construed as backing for the midfielder.

“The decision [on who will take penalties] is made before the game, yeah.

“No, [Aston Villa players’ behaviour prior to the spot-kick] didn’t get into Bruno’s head. He’s strong mentally and he’ll step forward again.

“Bruno has been excellent, he’s such a good penalty taker and today, you’d back him with your mortgage. He’ll step forward every day of the week, for the club and the team, sometimes it just doesn’t go your way.

“This is going to be the headline isn’t it? Bruno has been excellent and Cristiano is probably the one who has scored the most penalties in world football. So we’ve got great takers here.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Fernandes himself added:

“Nobody is more frustrated and disappointed than me for missing the penalty and the consequent defeat.

“I’ve always assumed my responsibilities and I’ve always embraced them under pressure in moments like this.

“Today, I failed. But I took a step forward and faced the challenge with the same ambition and responsibility as when, on the many other occasions, the ball ended up in the net.

“Criticism and contrasting opinions are a big part of football. I’ve learned to live with it, even using them to drive me on, and I consider it all a very important part of my commitment to never stop trying to improve and to become the best player I can possibly be, for me and the team.

“Today I once again took the responsibility given to me almost since I joined United and I will take it again without any fear or dread whenever called upon.

“The most important thing for me is to win together and I’ll always do everything I can to help my teammates and the club to be the best we can be.” – Bruno Fernandes

Even accounting for Saturday’s miss, Fernandes still holds a better penalty-taking record at club level: he has a 90.7% success rate after converting 39 of 43 spot-kicks, while Ronaldo has scored 85% of his efforts (125 from 147 penalties).

SHAW/MAGUIRE INJURY LATEST

What Solskjaer said about United's penalty situation and Shaw/Maguire injuries 3

Luke Shaw (£5.5m) and Harry Maguire (£5.4m) came off with injuries on Saturday but there was no clarity from their boss after full-time, with scans on the pair to follow.

“Sorry, I can’t give you any updates. We will have to use today and tomorrow and Monday or when we get the scans done and see how we are.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

We should get another update on the pair from Solskjaer on Tuesday, when the United head coach faces the media ahead of the Champions League clash with Villarreal.

UNITED PLAYERS – TIME TO SELL?

What Solskjaer said about United's penalty situation and Shaw/Maguire injuries

Four consecutive below-par performances in league and cup competitions, a favourable fixture swing for Chelsea, plus potential injuries to Shaw and Maguire means that United assets will be on the chopping block for many FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 7.

Five of the seven most-sold players of the upcoming Gameweek are on the Red Devils’ books, with Shaw leading the charge:

United’s fixtures also stiffen considerably over the next two months, leaving them bottom of our Season Ticker.

Shaw/Maguire are easy sells for the likes of Antonio Rudiger (£5.6m) or Ruben Dias (£6.1m), while even Mason Greenwood (£7.7m), who has offered excellent value so far, may be considered expendable given the number of cut-price midfielders doing the business elsewhere.

Ronaldo out for Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) won’t be as palatable for some, particularly as Everton and Leicester City have just three clean sheets combined in 2021/22.

But the form of United as a collective and Saturday’s result may have made the decision a little easier, with Ronaldo well shackled and starved of service, reduced to just one shot in the opposition box.

There were some eye-catching numbers posted by United assets on Saturday, with Greenwood racking up eight shots and Fernandes creating a remarkable ten chances, but the fact that those two players’ non-penalty expected goal involvements (xGI) were 0.51 and 0.72 respectively indicates that most of those opportunities weren’t clear cut.

Villa, indeed, had the more glaring chances despite United registering four times as many shots (28 v 7).

VILLA SOLID AGAIN – BACK THREE HERE TO STAY?

What Solskjaer said about United's penalty situation and Shaw/Maguire injuries 1

Villa have been impressive over their last three matches, even catching the eye in the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea.

That has coincided with a move to a 3-5-2, with the formation not only making the defence more robust but allowing Dean Smith to include both Danny Ings (£7.9m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.3m) in his starting XI without moving one of them wide.

Watkins, who has looked more threatening more than Ings over the last three, spurned two very presentable chances on Saturday, while Matt Targett (£4.8m) skied a Matthew Cash (£5.0m) cross from point-blank range – a chance that highlighted just how attractive those two FPL options could be if they are continually deployed at wing-back in a system that heightens the Villans’ prospects of clean sheets.

Since Cash took up that role in Gameweek 4, only one FPL defender has registered more penalty box touches.

“At times it was 4v4 at the back, we look at their players, (Paul) Pogba, (Cristiano) Ronaldo, Bruno and (Mason) Greenwood, and I thought they had smaller chances than we did.

“We blocked really well. When called upon, Emi (Martínez) has made good saves and we’ve had some good chances.

“Matt Targett missed one from the cross from Matty Cash and I think that chance just epitomised our bravery coming here and trying to get the win.” – Dean Smith

Kortney Hause (£4.4m), always a threat from set plays, was the match-winner on Saturday, although very likely wouldn’t have started had Axel Tuanzebe (£4.5m) not been ineligible.

Villa’s backline and Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m), a BPS magnet who collected bonus points to supplement his clean sheet for the second successive week, will be moving high up the FPL watchlist, although whether Smith sticks with a 3-5-2 in the easier fixtures ahead is another question – particularly with the likes of Emiliano Buendia (£6.4m) and especially Leon Bailey (£6.4m) to crowbar into the team. It goes without saying that Villa had looked more suspect at the back without a third centre-half and three across the midfield, so that has to be a consideration.

Further forward, Watkins is re-emerging onto the mid-price forward radar.

Despite facing Chelsea, Everton and United in his last three, he ranks comfortably among the top ten FPL forwards for shots in the box, penalty box touches and efforts on target since his return to the Villa line-up in Gameweek 4.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Maguire (Lindelof 66), Shaw (Dalot 34), McTominay (Cavani 81), Fred, Pogba, Fernandes, Greenwood, Ronaldo.

Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Hause, Mings, Targett, Ramsey (Archer 85), Luiz, McGinn, Ings (Buendia 77), Watkins.

How do you think, is it worth a -4 cost to bring Lukaku instead of Ronaldo.

Manchester United looks really poor for now (except against Leeds and Newcatle)

Id say Lukaku is the guy to get.. if he scores 2 (i think he will) and Rpnaldo scores 1 this weekend then the minus 4 doesnt matter.. but obvs this is one outcome, id say go for it though (after CL fixtures)

No. Of course Lukaku has the potential to outscore Ronaldo, but it could easily backfire.

I’d think about the opponent before doing the transfer. Southampton are no push over defensively at the moment having only conceded 1 goal in 3 games against difficult teams. Chelsea aren’t exactly putting up great attacking stats.

I've never remembered a season where so many ropey bandwagons for cheapies have been so successful, which has contributed to the high scores I think. Its still early days though.

Yes, I’ve not know a season like it. I’m averaging 70 pts too.

There is such a vacuum between the captain options and the budget options. It’s not helped that FPL have underpriced defenders, so it makes us question spending more than 6m elsewhere.

As a result, people can ride with 3 premiums and not make appreciable sacrifices elsewhere.

I'm guessing huge captain hauls are largely to blame

Mo and Ron have gone 36 24 and 26 as really highly owned C choices in half the game weeks so far. Don't need to add much to that for a really high average. Others may have hit Kaku and Bruno hauls too.

I'm not off to a particularly good start (310k) but am going to be on more points after 6 GW's than I was after 7GW's last season and the season before.

This season 409 points after 6 GW's with Sanchez to come.
      Last season 388 after 7 GW's
      Season before 409 after 7 GW's

Yeah, I'm averaging 71, so high scoring season so far.

The mad thing is, I've had 2 weeks where a player has got me -1, another 2 weeks where players have returned 0 points. And another 8 times in the 1st 6 weeks I've had 1 pointers. Which makes the 71 average all the crazier!

Same here and I missed that Bruno hattrick and haven't wildcardded. Others around me have equally good scores with completely different teams.

As a mini league runner it is making it rely fun. It's rubbish when one person takes the lead early and never gets caught up by the others.

Beginning to wonder if Shaw might not turn out to be one of those who's price is artificially preserved as happened last season with KdB iirc

He's already lost 20% of his ownership and is still hanging on. Also imagine that a really significant part of his ownership will already be dead teams who won't of course be losing him. Loads will have already given up and he was entirely generic week 1.

Tbf Im satisfied with the pts of both Sarr and Gray last 2 games. However they have always been for the short term.

WC draft. Fill the empty spaces

    Ramsdale 4.0
    TAA Cancelo Alonso xx xx
    Salah Raphina Sarr xx 4.5
    Lukaku Antonio xx

    A) Auba, Tomiyasu, Dier, 4.5 mid (4-3-3 and 5-3-2)

    B) Jesus, Rudiger, Tomiyasu, 4.5 mid (4-3-3 and 5-3-2)

    C) Jimenez/DCL, Saka, Christensen, Livra (switch between 3-4-3 and 4-3-3)

Option A: Another premium player in Auba who has a very nice run of fixtures and on pens. Auba can easily be downgraded to Jesus/DCL etc if he fails. Dier and Tomiyasu will rotate. The one not playing is cover for Alonso / Cancelo.

Option B: Rudiger gives me a solid defence and also a MCI attacker. Tomiyasu first on bench most week to cover for Alonso / Cancelo

Option C: Very strong bench, but benching headache every week. No City attacker, but plenty of cover for Cancelo/Alonso should they be rotated.

    Thoughts?

I don't know why you like Jesus more than Grealish or Foden.

The latter two are both cheaper and are mids as opposed to forwards. Just get cover for them.

I'd rather go Grealish - more nailed on, growing in his role in the team. I'd even rather go Foden. He's back now and his per 90 stats were great last season.

Will definetely have a look at Toney again (owned him up until my wc now) from gw8 and onwards. If the City mids starts to fire I can do Jesus + Sarr to Toney + Grealish in option B and DCL + Sarr to Toney + Grealish as well in option C

If on WC, Jesus is decent place holder for likes of Bamford. There are lot of cheap value picks to rotate in midfield and we have even 4.4 starting mid. So if we look at team structure, there is case for Jesus.

I think people need to have a think about Chelsea defence to be honest. Yes they have easy fixtures but they have conceded a lot of chances the last 3 games and one of those opponents was Aston Villa at home. They should have conceded more than they have. They also rotate defenders a lot. I feel like one defender is enough given the nice fixtures for other teams

Wilson back could almost improve him as there'd be someone to finish off the chances he creates. He returned in 2 of the 3 matches they started together. I wouldn't be put off Wilson being back at all if I was going ASM.

There are also some Duffy/Dunk owners that could hurt my rank.

A good idea to keep one mid priced mid for flexibility i think so its a big decision. Greenwoods numbers and even his bizarre performance this week make him a good sell i feel. Obviously Jota has the tough fixture this week and the returned threat from Firmino (esp this week). Greenwood out i reckon as you'd not be surprised at Jota coming off the bench to grab points. And the Scousers fixtures look better than the Mancs.

I would say Jota, as he's most likely to start on the bench. Greenwood will most likely start again this GW(might be his last GW as a starter though).

Anyone else scared to go without a City attacker from gw8? Or do we expect them to be so low owned that they don't possess any threats to our ranks? If the latter seems to be the case, then a city attacker could be a HUGE differential. Really want a City attacker but both Grealish and Jesus seems to be overpriced with so many budget options doing great

I don't think you're asking the question the right way.

Do you think a City midfielder will score big points and be worthy of a spot in your team for the value they offer?
Fixture run from GW8 is BUR bha CRY mun EVE

Issue is.. Which City attacker do you go with? Mahrez? Grealish? Torres? Kdb?

Besides Pep roulette all of them have issues as FPL assets.

      Mahrez very inconcistent.
Grealish not as good(FPL wise) as he was during his Villa time.
Torres.. Pep roulette deluxe and not that good in front of goal.
      Kdb injury prone.

The problem is that they are all individual assets. None affordable but Grealish seems to be ever present. So it's between Grealish and none for me. Jesus is possible short term place holder or punt.

I dunno could have some issues long term. People are crazy if they think Alonso won’t eventually rotate with chilwell. If Alonso starts against juve ths very good chance chilwell starts against Southampton. Ramsdale is not nailed and it will only take a bad game for him to be swapped with Leno. Sarr has looked good but against 2 of the worst defensive teams. They have Leeds next but after that wouldn’t expect him to score much. Having ASM and Antonio is risky. Both are injury prone and Antonio has Europa league as well

Not really sure what the low bottoms and ceilings thing is about, but thanks for your input. I don't think they are mediocre, though Mount's appeal includes nailedness (unlike Foden's), for me, so I'm just a little concerned that he's not essential to the Chelsea XI every week anymore. I have a bench to deal with City rotation already.

Chelsea away to Juve on weds, means he’ll play his best team surely? So no chance chilwell starts imo, possibly means alonso will get rested for their game with Southampton, which on paper you’d expect them to be less concerned with?

Agree with your points. Which one to bring in is tough

Rudiger the safe choice. Alonso if you have the bench to cover him.

That's why I went with Rudiger this week as I don't have bench cover. Might opt for Alonso on wildcard though.

'Best team' might include Chilwell as Alonso won't be trusted on defensive duty. We'll see.

Can see Chilwell starting vs Juve till 60 mins, and it is good then he starts vs southampton

    A) Cancelo/Dias, Ederson

In isolation A as I wouldnt be getting more than 1 city attacker but as a team setup I wouldn’t be sacrificing Trent for anyone.
Very much a case of each to their own
